Milan History - Things you should know
In the middle of this chaos of worthless threads, most of them not related to our team, I want to bring you back to where we belong: ACM-1899
For those who are new fans of Milan, or simply too young to have heard of this before, I will use this thread (and hopefully some of you will add more info) to let you know interesting details of how this institution became what it is today: -Due to the commercial and political relevance of the city of Milano (capital of Lombardia), it became a point of access to the foreigners from the North, who wanted to access the rest of Italy (cities like Roma, Napoli, Firenze, etc.) This is how Football arrived towards the end of the 1800's. In 1898, in Torino, the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) was created to give structure to this new popular game. The first team in Milan was the Mediolanum* FC. Among the followers of the "new" sport were three young Englishmen: Kilpin, Allison, and Davies. On December 16th, 1899, they met at the Hotel Du Nord with two English business men: Edwards and Nathan, who would supply the financial support for the new club. That day, the Milan Cricket and Football Club was created, with Alfred Edwards as its first president.

* "Mediolanum" means "in the middle of the valley". This is the name the Celtics gave the city when they established it around 400 b.C. The current name is a derivation of the original.

Bravo, SANT. I will contribute more to this thread later, and possibly some old pics of Milan too.
I think this thread should be moved to Discussions and made a Sticky. |

- Why are Milan colors red and black?
When the team was founded, the original members took the red from the city flag (like the English flag) red cross over white background (like the right side of today's Milan emblem)... and following the English trend of the striped shirts, they used the black because it was intimidating and powerful... The red/black combination looked so dark and powerful that it didn't take long before the team was called: Il Diavolo (the devil)

- In 1981, Milan became the first team in the world to print the players name on the back of the jersey.

The AC Milan football club was estabilished on the 16th of December 1899, its parents being three Englishman, Kilpin, Allison and Davies. They came to the idea when they were at a pint of beer, and they proposed it to two bussinesmen, Edwards and Nathan, and to another person, Mr. Barnett. Edwards was to become the first club president ever of the new Milan Cricket and Football Club.
The club aimed to play cricket as much as they could and to promote the game of football, not so popular in those times. In the first board of directors was also Pierro Pirelli, one of the future presidents of the club and also one of its most important historical figures. The establishment of the club spread into the city and Milan started to gain more and more supporters. The new club registered with the IFF (Italian Football Federation) and, to take part in the championship, they needed a pitch for the home matches. The site was found: the place of today's central station, Trotter. There was an open countryside field at that time there. The opening match was played against another team from Milan named Mediolanum. The game was played on the 11th of March 1900 and Milan started its history with a great 3-0 win. The first team who played for AC Milan was: Hoode, Cignaghi, Torretta, Lees, Kilpin, Valerio, Dubini, Davies, Neville, Allison, Formenti. You can see here that three of them were the club establishers , Kilpin, Allison and Davies. Although the 3-0 win was a good score for their morale, the Devils first official match, who was played on 15 April 1900 against FC Torino, was lost with 3-0. The first captain in AC Milan's history was Herbert Kilpin, one of the founders and through the club's best players. In the early Milan days you needed to be a member of the club. The fees were 20 lira and 12 lira for the students. The punishment for the players who had forgotten to pay was the interdiction to train. The first title for AC Milan was won in their second year of activity, 1901. From acmilan-online.com |

Yes, and that first scudetto was won after defeating Juventus for the first time in the semifinal... beating Genoa in the final... that Milan team had
5 English 5 Italians 1 French 1 Greek 1 Swiss In 1908, the FIGC forbid the entrance of more foreign players into the Italian teams, but 3 big teams decided not to admit any players from outside Milano, or not Italians... those teams (Milan, Genoa, and Torino) were suspended from the competition. Some of the Milan members felt this policy wasn't right, and they left the club to form their own, where players from other nationalities were accepted... they created the Football Club Internazionale Milano... remarking Internazionale... now you know why...

yes, and the only meaning of their colors is:
Blue/Black: as opposite to the Red/Black that Milan was already recognized for... they weren't even creative enough to use Blue/White... Remember that in those days, Juventus was wearing pink...

Here is a pic of Milan's first championship in 1901. They defeated Genoa, who were the only club to win the Italian League prior to 1901.

-In 1921, Piero Pirelli (President of the team) aiming for bigger objectives for the club started the project of the new stadium... Ulisse Stacchini, the arquitech who built the Stazione Centrale (train station) was in charge of the project...
On October 6th, 1926 the Stadio San Siro opened its doors... It was called San Siro in honor of the Saint of a nearby church...
