I completely disagree with this.
Gattuso and Pippo weren't tactically poor or less inteligent then others. They just didn't have the technical ability (talent if you will) like others so they made up for it with other things like grit, hard work, and passion.
Do you put Simeone and Conte in a different bracket then? They were also players that relied on physical attributes more then anything else. In fact, very similar to the things you mentioned about Pippo and Rino. As a matter of fact, even though more technical then Gattuso, Simeone was nothing more for Veron than what Gattuso was for Pirlo. Look at him now. Same with Conte. Again, different players, but by no means geniouses.
I for one am impressed with what I saw today. In 5 days under Gattuso we looked more like a team then 5 months under Montella. Yes, some of Montella's concepts are there and that helped as Rino didn't start from scratch...but I think he did an exceptional job in transforming a slow moving pedestrian passing side into one with grit, directness and speed (ball movement).
It's early to judge him, but there were some very encouraging signs out there today.
