But even the group that was called up they should have easily qualified. It's not a question of lack in talent or options. I agree on De Sciglio. But all coaches are the same. They are the most arrogant and stubborn individuals out there. There is zero reason De Sciglio should be called up and not Calabria. Yet, again, this isn't reason they didn't qualify.
I don't think radical changes from the core are necessary.
Reza, I agree on the young players comment. It's a 2 edged blade though. People argue that playing time under real pressure is necessary for development and I can see that. On the other hand, like you mentioned, Serie B is of extremely low level (just look at the teams that come up year after year) so how good does it actually do for a 18-20 year old to be playing there? Then again, at some point you gotta just stop just training and start playing as well.
Anyway, I'll say it again......i think Italy needs to find another coach. One with a bit different mentality. The talent is there. This group of players could have challenged for the WC. It may sound silly to say that after they were just beaten and embarrassed, but individually, they are as good as any other national team out there. Mancini failed to bring that individual quality together after the Euro. And he, like many stubborn coaches out there, REFUSED to change the style after it clearly didn't work for 6 months. Refused to change formation, style, tactics, personnel, everything.
Again....what was the point of playing a midfield of Verratti, Barella and Jorginho???? So that he could "dominate" the midfield???? Against a team that was going to GIVE you the midfield anyway!!?? Macedonia had no interest in winning midfield battles. They just wanted to plug the box. Where were the Italian runs into the box from the midfield?? Lol It was a joke. They had Verratti, Jorginho and Barella making 5 yard passes left and right for most of the game. You play that midfield against Spain or Germany or Brazil. Not against Macedonia. Pellegrini should have started because he is great in long shots and good at making runs into the box. Also, why not play with 2 CFs? Why insist on only 1 when it hasn't worked for 6 months. Against a team that was gonna sit deep.
I saw tactical issues. I saw mentality (from the coach) issues. Not an issue of talent or lack of development or options. This is why I'm saying reforms are not necessary. Of course. You always assess how you can improve your system and keep up. But like I said, I'm afraid these idiots will hurt the individual clubs again with knee-jerk reactions like always. Someone, somewhere within FIGS will use this as an excuse to push their own agenda. In the end, it'll be the individual clubs and Serie A that'll suffer.
