Is Coentrao THAT good?
He played only 4 WC2010 matches in the very defensive Portugal team. Brazil were OK with a draw while both CI & NK didn't possess any great wingers. In knock-out match against Spain, Ramos dribbled pass him twice.
Benfica is the current champion of Portugese league, but their from in CL was awful and Coentrao didn't have any star performances.
Only Bayern pursued him some weeks after WC, but for now there are only some random rumors.

His game against Lyon was amazing but ... he played as a winger. Actually, with Benfica, he generally plays as a winger and not as a LB. It's a Portuguese Bale, or Bale is a Wallish (?) Coentrao, take it the way you want !! 
I think we should look for two LBs: a defensive minded one and an attacking minded one, using them depending on our opponent (and depending on the way they develop their game too of course). The problem of Antonini is that he isn't that good in defence (in the game against Tottenham, he didn't stop Lennon at all, letting him crossing each time he wanted to do so, and it wasn't a problem of pace) nor is he in attack (almost none of his crosses results with a goal) ...
If we consider Abate to be a starter for next season, we still need a backup for him. Then, Zambrotta could stay, he would be the 5th FB, able to play on both sides, so to help us if there are some injuries.
Of course, such a scenario means selling/releasing Antonini (rumours are that he could go to Juventus this summer, especially if Criscito comes), Oddo, Jankulovski and Didac Vila.
FB roster: LB, LB, Abate, RB, Zambrotta
That's 3 players to buy, that's probably too much for that to happen, but if it had to happen, it would be perfect, then, if we had to suffer a big injury crisis with our FBs, no need to have the likes of Oddo or Janku who are overpaid, just launch some youngster for some games !! Who knows, we could be surprised like we were with Merkel.

Coentrao - the winger, that's what I want to say. If he comes, he'll play LCM like Urby, not the needed LB.
We still don't know how Didac Vila plays, but since his arrival, Antonini's form has increased He plays like every match could be his last >>> Vila is a real threat, so he could be good. This young guy is very athletic, with enough tactical training, he can become what we expect.
The possibilty is still unknown, we could have a good set of Vila, Nini & Zam or still cry for a WC LB. I'm looking forward to some Vila's show.
we always had more than enough back ups for FB position in the last years. i hope will have enough back ups starting from next season.

Haven't you seen everyone writing coentrao a million times? And corrected you a thousand? Its not a big deal, but just wondering why you still say coentraro?
About him, I've also seen him play LB and do wonderfully well. Who says he did nothing in CL? He has a brace in group stages... And looked very very very good in europa league yesterday. Antonini is so useless defensively and offensively so he can be any worse.

Sorry, i didnt notice it. i said Coentraro cuz im in love, i feel over the moon, dont care about anything. Coentraro or Coentrao. it doesnt make difference for me. actually its Coentrão not Coentrao btw.
Lets say that im in love and im in a mood that i can write even my name wrong at this stage...

Coentrão just scored 3 goals last season and 10 assists. (in 45 games just 3 goals, he scores one goals each 15 games) His scoring rate is low. this is why if we sign him, we had better to use him at FB not at midfield.
if we lose Coentrão, What about Evra? he can leave United next season. maybe another name? Cissokho?

We've talked too much about Coentrão so I just tried to "play down" this player a bit. Good LBs are rare nowadays, that means the value becomes too high and not every team possesses or does all things to possess one.
The kind of player I want at LB is someone like Chiellini, athletic, good at defense and tough enough to take any challenge, own field or advance. Because our LCMs are technical & tactical players like Pirlo, Urby or Merkel, they need protection. So I prefer Criscito to Coentrão or Bale.
IMO, the utmost priority is a super ACM, we'll watch the progress of Vila until the end of this season to see how much we need a new & expensive LB.

Evra and Cissokho should be forgotten !!
Let's take a look in Italy and Portugal/South America (how do the Uruguayan LB perform ? In Porto I think ?) ... No other country is known to have good fullbacks, except Ramos in Spain but he is maybe a bit too dirty to play in our club for moment. Just imagine Sergio Ramos in our last game against Tottenham, we could have had a direct red card to Ramos who would have been added to the mad guy (Gattuso) and the crazy tackler (Flamini) !!
Actually, having Criscito could allow Abate to improve a lot on his right side ... Why ? What is the link ? Antonini is the weak part of our defence, by replacing him by Criscito, our left side would be very solid, and as he would tend to stay behind, in some moments, it could allow Abate to forget the defensive work as it would be like if we had 3 CB behind !! Abate would improve by pushing forward, and our team would be better overall as there would be one extra player moving.

Forget about coentrao,guys! look what happens in david luiz deal,we are no competition to clubs like chelsea,real madrid.hoping the emergence of didac vila has more sense.
Mexes is a great deal considering it's free base.I still like zapata,he is quite promising and won't cost insanely much.

Geo, Fucile always impressed me,who can play in both flanks, both defensively and offensively he was pretty good, he had a good WC, he was always good for Porto in CL or Euro Leaugue...
Dynamic, skilled with the ball, he can cross, he is agressive and fighter typee of FB.
By the way, how is Benoît Trémoulinas doing in France this season?
Gökhan Gönül, 26 years old, plays for Fenerbahce, he is pretty good RFB. Zico, former coach of Fenerbahce, compared him to Cafu most times, he is a complete FB, offensively he pushes really hard from right. (Fenerbahce's LFB is Andre Santos, Brazil NT starting LFB) Gönül was always one of the best players of Fenerbahce in the last years, he is consistent. Andre Santos defensively weak and slow. (He dribbles well, he shoots well, he pushes well) Thats all.
