I think we have the best strikers in Italy, and arguably the best CBs and GK in italy. But our midfield is not even average and is bringing the whole team down. It's like buuilding a huge mansion with no foundation. Sure the house is going to look good, but the true value of the house will be nothing since it will sink at any moment.
It's still early and things can change (especially since Nocerino and Aqua haven't really had much time to establish chemistry with their new teammates), but we ALL knew that we needed serious investment in MF this summer and yet nothing happened. This is why we would have been better off swapping Casano or Pato for a quality MF. Who cares how much depth we have up front when we can't hold the ball in MF.
Excellent post & explanation. Overall, I think we all agree on this, but unfortunately nothing has been done about it. Switching Cassano for Hamsik + €15Million would have been a great deal. We wouldn't have spent that much and we would have improved greatly.

This has tons of energy and 3 real dynamic midfielders. Then you can rotate them with Nocerino, Gattuso, Ambro, Flamini, Merkel & El Shaaraway. I mean for me the first 4 possess all of the same qualities. They can be brought in to secure the win in the 2nd half or they can start for tactical reasons (more defensive).
Now I think Hamsik is out of our reach as he is more expensive if they do well at CL & make a run at Scudetto, and he will be apart of their long term plans. They don't seem to be a selling club. Hamsik & Boateng in the lineup together for me would be deadly (so much energy and movement), but for now we'll have to settle with a lineup in midfield that will be very difficult to achieve movement and creativity.

de rossi would also be a good option in pirlo's position...he, along with a dynamic young midfielder like hernanes is what we would need right now....as our main problem now is there is no link between a fearsome attack and a stable defence...i.e a dynamic & creative midfield....

Obviously some Inter Fans are very upset about the loss to Novara. I decided to browse the forums of Inter and I came across this post. It was actually an excellent post, and I couldn't help but draw parallels to our own problems in our team:

Changing the coach won't fix our problems. They're deeper then that. It starts at the head. We are 2 years removed from the Treble season. Both the players and Moratti need to let go. Mourinho is not coming back and he's not the only coach who's ever won a fucking trophy. Gasperini can go, but don't expect miracles.
Milito 30 > 32. Zanetti 36 > 38. Forlan 32 > Eto'o 30....etc.
Moratti is a fan and I'm sure he would love to see Inter succeed as much as the next man. But at this point he is hiding behind "bad" coaches. Like it or not there was a lot of truth in what Rafa said and he's not as evil or shit as we make him out to be. Same goes for Gasperini. I don't see this problem being fixed this season. Nor do I believe we will see them fixed by next season.
I mean no disrespect when I say this because I really do love our players, but we were never the best team in Europe. We had some world class players surrounded by work horses and we got the job done. We peaked at the right time and the stars aligned, hell some one has to win it every year. What this team is in need of is serious investment. However, with FFP be it an excuse or fact we will continue to have mediocre transfer campaigns. Thank god Inter invested in youth when it did because that may be our saving grace, but if your looking for Coutinho and Luc to be protagonists of our team by next year you probably also believe in Santa.
Other top teams, Man United for example, sheer off their old guard and keep those capable of still making a difference (Giggs). We have held onto our old guard far to long. I don't know why Italian teams in general have this attitude of "Oh (insert name) is class, he can make a difference till he's 40" Everybody remember that super forward who helped Schalke bend us over last year? His name was Raul and he was sold by Madrid because he was in the way of the clubs vision for the future. Drogba? Sorry buddy we just bought a 50 million pound striker . And don't think Lampard won't be next! Top teams do not hold on to Cordoba's, Stankovic's, and Chivu's. It's not personal it's business and last time I checked we were in the business of winning.
Moratti Inter's biggest fan? Yes, and this is also our biggest problem.
Guys, I absolutely don't see what's so special about Hamsik. And if we do swap Cassano + 15 m for Hamsik then we are incredibly stupid. I have watched Napoli many many times and I always got the impression that Hamsik is a good solid player, nothing more nothing less. I have never felt he has some WC level talent like Cassano does for example.
Don't let the last two games fool you. We had no attack, no midfield, everyone played like crap, so please don't blame Cassano. And he still made an assist in that game right?
Anyway, Hernanes, Ganso, Montolivo (free) are all welcome but Hamsik is just sinking into mediocrity imho.
Seriously, I have never seen a Napoli match where Hamsik was standing out as a WC player.
If he was that great, we wouldn't be the only team chasing him.

I wasn't trying to say Casano is the problem or that he's not world class. I'm just saying having so much depth at FW is useless when we have a crap MF. We can have 5 Messi's on our squad and we'd still not do well in CL since our MF is so horrendous. We need more balance - not the top heavy squad we carry now.
We should have spent money on above average/WC mids. But we obviously have no money. So we should have sold some surplus attackers to compensate for our lack of funds.

We have been having this problem for 3 years now, luckily it isn't that bad this year. Most of the veterans have already been replaced:
Inzaghi - Paloschi / Balotelli
Ambro - Montolivo?
Gattuso - Nocerino
Yepes - Mexes
Van Bommel - he can play for another year
Zambrotta - ??
Seedorf - this is the toughest one, Hernanes, Ganso or Sneijder would do... but any good player in this position costs a lot of money.

Giovanni Galli, our goalkeeper when Sacchi was in charge, has said he thinks Montolivo will go Inter according to Milannews.
Flame, I think it's of utmost importance we look to replace Ambro/Van Bommel as the central piece of our midfield. Both have desperately shown their age so far this season and they play a key role in our system.

Krasic and Conte have had a falling out pretty much since Conte returned to Juve. I gather Krasic also wasn't particularly hard working in training, which annoyed Conte.
