I'm not quite understanding what you mean. Your 1st sentence had me agreeing, but then I got lost and I'm confused.

I think comparing Romagnoli to Costasurta (in terms of status, not quality) is actually accurate. But then you said Romagnoli is the best defender we have, yet Billy was NEVER the best defender we had. 

It's an interesting thought, comparing Billy and Romagnoli. As I said, in status, that could be great. Billy was never considered "the top" in Milan. There were always better defenders then him. But he did a job, a solid job, and he did it well. He complimented the others around him but was never considered "the most important" in the backline. 

Similarly, I think Romagnoli can play the same role. He is not world class and it looks like he won't be. (Billy actually would be considered world class by today's standards...but back then there were legends of defending playing...some in the same line up as him). But if we were to get a world class CB, then Romagnoli can be the Billy next to him. Doing a solid job and complimenting. 

Having said that..I agree with Hitman and others. To make him the 3rd highest paid player in the squad only to be "a complimentary player as I said", is not the wisest decision.

Strasbourg is reportedly asking for 30M for Simakan, a player that we had agreed on a contract with in the summer mercato. I think if we're serious on getting him (I've only watched him a couple of times, and he seems to be quite versatile, able to play CB, RB, DM), we could wait to see if Strasbourg remains relegation threatened this season.

I think we should go for a experienced defender someone who is in between 25-28 age group not old and not too young defender. Someone like Matthias Ginter would suffix, his contract is expiring in 2022,.we should surely buy him next summer for cheap. Other alternatives should be Denayer, Izzo.

If we target an experienced CB, we should aim player who can compete with Kjaer or Romagnoli or even a better one since our goal is CL. I am afraid your suggestions won't fit to our expectation. I only can see we go for a young talented CB who has some experience, not a youngster without few competitive games played. A player who has potential to grow to be a great CB. We won't buy a top experienced CB I think.
