I think everyone will agree that if we can get ourselves a starting (23 yr old) CB for 30mil, we'd all be all for it. I don't know if Tomori is that starting CB. I don't know anything about him. But he's coming on a (cheap) loan and we can determine this in June. At the very least, we get ourselves a cheap back up option to finish the season and we can re-evaluate our options in the summer with a bigger bank account.
I don't think spending 15-20 mil on Simakan or the likes would have been much more of a certainty. The only thing is that if it didn't work out..we'd be stuck and have a smaller bank account to re-evaluate our options in June.
The January market is always tricky and always based on "opportunities". I don't believe we didn't want to spend 15-20 on Simakan in August and yet miraculously decide to spend that in January. Imo, we missed out on "better" targets in the summer, there was a need for a CB in January, and Simakan was an opportunity as is Tomori. Not saying we haven't been following these guys. I'm sure they were on a list. But clearly we weren't dead set on getting them a few months ago.
I think this deal (loan + 25/30 mil option) works best for everyone involved at the moment. If things work out, Chelsea gets 30mil for a player that wasn't really part of their starting group....whereas we get a young starting CB for that same amount. We could argue that 30mil is too much. But that's right now. We wouldn't be doing much arguing in June if this guy turns out good for the next half of a season.
