I would object your players' selections. Why did you crowd the midfield with players with the same characteristics? During Ancelotti era for instance, if We mimick Ancelotti here; The midfield was made of Pirlo, Seedorf, and Gattuso; players with very different characteristics allowing our play to be well covered and creative. Here, you put Bennacer and Tonali which is equal to two Pirlos; Any Reason? I would select one from Bennacer and Tonali as a Registra. Whereas, Kessie as an RCM would make sense to me as Gattuso played there and provided a particular addition to the midfield; an addition Kessie can also provide. Whereas, LCM needs a Seedorf alike player; someone We lack but still I can think of Hauge and Diaz, who need much work to be able to provide the needed skills.

Giampaolo won't even use Theo, Bennacer, Rebic. Pioli took over practically the same squad and did much better. Giampaolo does not even know how to change his team around when it's not working.

Nice idea. I just gave it as a hypothesis, not much thinking  Sagrin

He did not have Theo and Rebic. Bennacer still new.

I do not really want to defend him, but he surely had a not very promising squad.  Sagrin

I remember Boban was fired for signing Ibra  Icon_lol2  so the coach at that time was not well supported and Maldini & Boban did not have the required power.

I would switch tonali n benncer. I believe bennacer has the capability to develop to a seedorf like player. Plus he's too nervous in the regista position. Tonali would do better there
AC MILAN

He had Theo and Rebic. Not for the game in the link you posted, but they were acquired that summer. But he was too dumb to see potential. He insisted on using R.Rodriguez instead of Theo because "he knew the tactics". In reality, he preferred to pass the ball to death in our own half and had RR pass backwards in order to retain the ball rather then attempt to go forward. Theo takes risks, Giampaolo doesn't. He think possession is everything, even if it's in your own defensive 3rd.

Same thing for Bennacer. Yes, he was new and not the player he is now. But Giampaolo should have seen the potantial and work with Bennacer from day 1. Instead, he insisted on Biglia.

The squad wasn't exactly what it is now....but it wasn't much different either. All the starters now (apart from Ibra, Saele and Kjaer) were with the team back then. Tomori is another one, but he just came here this past winter. My point is that Pioli had in large the same squad to work with.

My bad, Theo was there. But Rebic came in winter in swapping deal with A.Silva.

Anyway, I don't try to protect the former coach. My point is "even him" can do better with the current squad, that a compliment for Maldini for his success in transfer and gaining trust & power.

Giampaolo is empty.
