It's a lose lose situation. No matter how you look at it. Only after the fact it's easier to analyze and draw conclusions. People still talk about "we could have sold him for 100m". Yea right. NOBODY was going to pay that. PSG's bid was 16m + Areola. You kidding? If Paolo sold Dollar for 16m + Areola, people would have burned his house.
Best way is to form a team (by any means possible - cheap, free, young, old, expensive, whatever) that wins. That's what keeps people happy (for the most part at least). This is what the management has done. They have done as best as possible, within the circumstamces. Theirs is a "cheap" young winning team. This is what they succeeded with. So maybe it's best to keep going that way.
Sometimes I think, maybe it's better that we don't have these big EPL budgets. I mean, look what we did when Elliot first put a lot of money in the market. We went and burned it on Paqueta and Piatek. Higuain and Caldara. Zero plan, zero scouting, zero fire under our feet. Just "playing with dealer's money" and whatever is, will be.
It's just a bit more fun this way. And the victories taste sweeter!
The leadership team cannot do things because of what the fans want. If they do that, we'd be shelling out 500m euros every summer like we are PSG on steroids lol. I'd rather be a "selling club" than a broke club that's for sure.
I have never suggested anybody we let go for free would've been sold for 100m. But to lose them for absolutely nothing put a major financial strain on the club. Again, was Donna gonna be sold for 100m? No! But could we sell him for 40m if he had two years left on his deal? I think that's possible. That would've given us 40M more in the budget to improve the team areas of the team, whether it's signing someone more established or a few of the diamonds in the rough. It is called asset management, and it is part of running a professional sports team.
I totally agree we should try to build a team that wins. And the best way to guarantee more wins? Have good players! Best way to get good players? By having the money to acquire said players. Letting go of quality players for nothing lowers our chances of having the budget to acquire those nice players. Unless you think we are going to find 10 Kalulus in the market every year, it is a practice we need to stop doing. Notice that the other European powerhouses avoid letting their players walk for nothing unless they have to? There is a reason for that guys lol

But that's just it. we did not get those offers. The only mistake is not taking what was offered but it was never that simple.
In hindsight 16m plus Areola was a good deal because despite Areola being average, it's still 16m cash which is what Maignan cost.
Hakan didn't want to go to Turkey so that wasn't an issue.
Kessie had two suitors, one of which put in an offer that he refused. Barca were never going to give us $$$ for Kessie.
Romagnoli never had any interest from anyone. even on a free, he was only ever going to one club.
If we were harder on the players then Maybe Hakan may have taken the offer because it would have been Turkey or bench.
Kessie same. Spurs or bench.
While it's less than Ideal. I will add that it's part of the modern game. we've seen more players going on a free last season or two than ever before and it'll only get worse.
agents have too much power and players are risking everything to move for an extra few $$$.
Management need to come up with a strategy to manage that and use that same thing to our favor.

Mmm. Yeah, why not. Risking 4M is not a bad idea for a well scouted player.

Did we not get any offer because nobody wanted the players or because we had no intention to sell? It is so weird that these players all become hot commodity as soon as they are free agents but we somehow couldn't sell them at all when they were here. Put it this way, I have a hard time believing if we put Donna up for sale with two years left on his deal, nobody in Europe would come in with an offer of at least 20m. Kessie was still fetching offers from Tottenham this past January, when he only had half a season left on his deal. We absolutely could have at least sold those two for some money but we wanted to negotiate for their extensions instead. We gambled on it, and lost everything. All I am advocating is that we do not repeat the same mistakes again with the current batch of negotiations

Just look at Juve and Rabiot situation. Juve wanted to get rid of him but he refuse to leave because he didn't get paid enough. Players are not commodities that you can trade freely like some of you guys think. If its so easy then we would have sold Castellijo long ago.

That is a net 10m gain, whereas letting Donna go and sign Maignan was a net 16m loss. To be honest, I don't think Donna was actually that difficult to replace. He had a lot of good saves but was fairly error prone and clumsy with his feet. I am reasonably sure we could've found someone who is at least a decent replacement for him if we had the money and need for it.
We did not try to sell Kessie two years ago, dude. We were fully committed to negotiating him until we are all blue in the face and then wanted to sell him this past January but Kessie didn't want to leave cause he knew he was gonna get a big fat contract in free agency.

We were trying to sell Kessie in 2020 with a couple of English clubs interested but he didn't want to join them. He had 2 years remaining on his contract at that time, he is already determined to run down his contract since then. This is how players behave nowadays.

Rabiot has one year left on his deal so it's basically the same situation we dealt with. I am saying we should sell them with two years left on their deals, not wait till the last year and have these players dirt bag their way to free agency.
Is it just me or did that article you post literally say "Milan decided to not sell Kessie"? Again, it's not that he had no market, we just didn't want to sell. It's a totally different situation

That was the season we loan Tonali and according to many articles we did want to sell Kessie to the Premier league but he didn't want to leave. I thought everybody knew we were trying to sell Kessie in 2020 before he had a great season. He had a great season after that and we decide to extend with him. He then play us out.

Another player want to wait out his contract to make sure he get a bigger contract. This kind of players are everywhere now, just accept that and move on.
Im a little angry that we didnt go for Di Maria as a simple and cheap solution on the right wing. Look at his debut for Juve. He was stunning, and he is that kind of player you know will succeed. He earns 6 mill for a year loan at the first place. A fit Di Maria is world class despite his age. He is also a work horse, so he would fit Piolis demands.
But to late now.

That says it all.
more NDicka rumous popping up today.
Don’t forget, Hauge was sold to Milan 2 years ago…wait what will happen to Casadei two years later, he can be a big hit or he can either join Hauge in AA Gent…
Remember Pellegri, he was hyped as much as Casadei that time, where is he playing now? Torino…
