I get it. I understand and agree with player protection laws. But there should be at least some contingencies to protect the clubs as well. Maybe there are and I'm not familiar.

I don't know for other countries, but in Serbia, when you're sick and absent from work, you don't get full salary, just 65%. But it can't go under minimal salary. So, if you're on minimal, you will get 100%. Why same rules wouldn't apply for baker and football player?

Very reasonable and most countries have similar laws. I agree it's absolutely insane that football players get more protection that the common folk. 

In the end, let's even forget about a change in salary payment requirements. There are still other ways to protect clubs. For example, if a player is unavailable for at least 50% of the season due to injury and is in the last year of contract,  the club should have the ability to initiate an extra year (at least) renewal just to protect its asset and it's own balance sheet. I understand we likely wouldnt want to automatically renew Florenzi for a year....but I'm thinking of other players and situations where we might. Example, imagine this happens to someone like Theo or Mike next summer. We'll be stuck with their salaries and then lose them for free. And there isnt a damn thing we can about it.

I don't have an opinion on him. Can't say I've seen him play a whole lot. Whatever I've seen from Tottenham has been little and haven't really been paying attention at their RB tbh.

Out his price, but seeing what today's prices are, I'm not sure 15m is a lot. For example, a nobody like Todibo going for 40m. I say a nobody because that dude failed at Barca, at Shalke, at Benfica...and all of a sudden a decent season or two at a Nice (without any appearences in CL or Europa League btw) means he is 40m?
So yea. I'm not that concerned with spending 15m on a RB, which I think we all agree is a position that needed a more than just Calabria. Kalulu's name has been thrown around, but in all honesty, he's looked atrocious in pre-season. So much so, that he barely featured in the last game against Barca. Everyone's game time has been increasing as the season is nearing, yet Kalulu's time on the field has been decreasing. It's an interesting trend.
So maybe Fonseca and the management decided that we can't rely on him and we finally need to bite the bullet for Emerson.

I always say that even if I've not seen enough of Emerson Royal, I've seen Calabria more than enough to be okay with having someone different on that right side. I don't believe it would take a lot to be an upgrade on Calabria, honestly. I don't even bring Kalulu into the equation here because, 1) he hasn't done enough in the last two seasons, 2) his injuries. Royal has the experience, has played in Spain and England and is a Brazilian international (for what it's worth).

We need to trust the management a bit on this.

I don't know how that works in Europe, but I believe that in North America, this is where insurance company comes in and pays? (most teams have players' contracts insured)

I will be honest. I am very disappointed.

But I was wrong before (many times!! ), so maybe I am hoping that he will prove me wrong again.

European players are insured too, I have no idea how much is paid but injured players don't get all salary from teams.

I would rather trust those who have seen Royal week in and week out. The Tottenham fans regard him as a joke and have a chant about him:

See, I'm not saying we are buying Cafu. But tell me the options please. Stay as we are with Calabria? Aren't you tired of that dead side for the past six years?? And please don't mention Kalulu, for the simple reasons I stated in my earlier post. And it's €15m for God's sake! Tell me where you can get someone with his experience, an international, for that price.

And fans can be wrong, you know? Same way management can be wrong about a player. So Spurs fans saying he's bad, well, yeah he's been their player, they've seen him play. But that doesn't automatically make him a terrible player. Club and playing conditions can affect players performances. We've seen that countless times. We've taken Chelsea "rejects" here and they've all been successful in varying degrees.

So, the verdict on Emerson Royal might be he's a "bad" footballer. Maybe, maybe not. But, for 15m, I'm willing to give him a chance and see how he does here. Bottom line, I've seen enough Calabria. I welcome this change and hope it works out.
