That rumor is pure BS. If there's any 'safe' players now, they will be Honda and Montolivo, for the exact reasons you mentioned. One sells shirts, the other is captain.

We can't hold on to players because of immage rights alone. If that was the case we should've never gotten rid of Ronaldinho and Beckham! If this is the only reason some of you want Hinda to stay then I disagree completely. Besides, how much commercial revenue does he actually bring? I can't see it as astronomical. What is it? 3,4,5mil a year? It's chunk change. And I'm sure he has retained quite a bit of those immage rights anyway and nets a pretty healthy profit himself. Sure we got a couple of sponsors in Japan because of him but these are minor.

For me, Honda is expendable. His performances on the field haven't proven otherwise. I wouldn't care if he stays as he can be useful...but if he is replaced by a more capable player then I'd go for it right away.

Nefremo, I posted a link in the financial thread- Our books aren't as clean as was thought earlier. Honda does bring in quite a lot of money (for a team in our state) and with Bee wanting to capture the Asian market his presence makes sense. Besides can you imagine the level of commercial and consumer Interest from Asia when we are actually doing well?

The commercial and consumer interest will blow up anyhow IF we do well. Honda or not! Winning and entertaining is the best way to market yourself. Players do help, but they are not everything. I can promise you that if Honda is replaced with someone of higher quality and we end up winning the league plus be a force in the CL next year.....our commercial revenue will grow a lot more then if we keep Honda and stay as we are. Not saying we can't win with Honda, but his performances on the field the last year and a half have been far from good, let alone impressive. I maintain, it's a mistake to keep a player JUST for commercial value.

To reiterate my stance though before it gets out of hand.....I'm not looking for us to get rid of Honda. He CAN be useful. But if there is an interested party with an offer on the table, while also the opportunity to replace him in the squad with a better player......I would do it right away.

Like I said, we are talking about figures that are not so high. Sure they help, but let's not joke around, 1.5 or 2 or 3 or 5 mil is not going to take us anywhere. You said that he brings "quite a lot of money", but according to the report you posted, this is not quite a lot of money. In the grand scheme of things, we need great players and a winning team a lot more then a marketing puppet that brings a couple of mil euros a year. So if there is the opportunity to move towards having a better team at the expense of Honda, then I'm all for it. Honda has been average here and the only thing giving me some confidence that he'll do better this year is the fact that he will be used in his preffered role. But if this doesn't work too, then I don't get what's the point of keeping him here.

I'm really confused on seeing the news. On the one hand, I see there might be a push to get Witsel, on the other, Galliani is apparently trying to persuade Silvio to sign a midfielder, as Silvio's not convinced and doesn't want to spend 10m, partly because the club's already got a full roster of midfielders and none want to leave.

From what I read, Berlu is not convinced to sign Soriano because he thinks Soriano is nothing but a rotational player in the midfield, and we already have enough of those. He seems to think Witsel is a player with superior quality and would be willing to invest in him to improve the quality of the team. I am sure you don't agree with that line of thinking lol, but that's what Berlu is going by. It's actually good news if you ask me that Berlu is interested in investing in quality instead of quantity. We might not agree with his evaluation of quality, but the strategy is at least on point. 

Read another rumor linking us to Illaramendi from Real Madrid. Solid signing if we can get him. All around midfielder who can play the ball and has defensive tenacity, and he won't cost a fortune to sign.

If Berlusconi truly is interested in quality, he should splash out some serious cash on Isco. Illaramendi should upgrade our midfield, but he won't be a huge deal. I remember Ancelotti not trusting him at all, and that has to mean something.
