This Messi discussion seems pointless to me. Yes he struggles for Argentina, but the last time Argentina had a respectable coach in charge was probably Bielsa in 2002, who totally failed because his team lacked the discipline to be able to follow his tactical instructions. Right now Argentina want to play like Barca, but what Barca spent 10 years building Argentina are trying to build in a year. Not only that they are a complete mess from back to front, with no real ideas or team structure. I was highly critical of Brazil after the Venezuela match, but in comparison to Argentina, they're miles ahead as at least the players know what they are meant to do on the pitch.

Messi's (and Tevez, Lavezzi, Di Maria and others) performances for the national team are not because he's not as good as people say, but because he's a single player in a sea of chaos.

We need a luxury tax, ala NBA. For every dollar you spend over X amount, you need to spend another dollar in tax, all of which goes to every other team.

This is why American "franchise" ideals are better than "Association Football".

Barca generally have 7 players from their youth set-up in their starting XI. They have a small squad over half of whom came through their youth system. The reason the can afford to spend big on an individual player is the number of players that come through the system. But there is generally an anti-barca stance in this forum which I'm afriad is pure jealousy. Madrid spending £100m+ each summer is more of an issue. If it wasn't for spending big money and being allowed to do so then Milan wouldn't have had the team they did in the 90's.

I do think this is the case. Bale in no means should be put at 50M (strange, they refuse to pay 40M for Cesc!).

But what is over price? With the money in football at the top end it is difficult to say what is and what isn't. If Milan buy Neymar would people be complaining? Barca won't be paying 50 mil for Bale. The reason they won't pay a too much for Cesc is they had him as a youngeter so politically it would be dangerous to pay a huge amount for him.
