Rae..you can't like both teams!!!! :D Its like being a fan of Milan AND Inter or Milan AND Juve...

Personally I always had an affinity for Ottawa as I lived there a few years.

As for the Habs..they seeded 8th open up the series in Boston (seeded 1st) ..watch the Habs shock the hockey world and win like they did two years ago. Watch Jose Theodore show everyone why the Canadiens signed him to the "big bucks"!

Go Habs Go!

Rezag...I love your avatar buddy.

All I can say is GO HABS GO, Boston are definitely beatable and I heard a Nick Boynton interview and he had something to say about the Habs players that made me think the Bruins are a nervous team ;)

The city is getting into HABS MODE as usual...habs banners everywhere...

if only the city would get into Expos mode once in while!:(

Theo is not talking much which is usually a good sign..hopefully Kovalev explodes...coupled with Saku and Zednik playoff tear and the surprises like Ryder and Ribiero this team may surprise some.

Lombardia: Still a Rangers fan?...condolences ;) :tong:

Well, I like watching Hockey, although I do not follow it too much. My team is definitely the SJ Sharks, as they are my local SF Bay Area team, and I can go watch they as I wish. But from what I hear, they are $hitty this year, is this true?

I also have sympathy for Detroit

go for ottawa:) :)

Ottawa is way much better than toronto

Billy_Montreal
15-04-2004, 12:08
Agreed I lived in Ottawa (did a degree there) and have an affinity for the team. Actually Toronto for me is like Juventus of Hockey I just hate them. Their fans are arrogant despite the fact that the Maple Leafs have not won anything since 1967 (when they play us in Montreal we chant: 67...67...67...)
The Ottawa Toronto series is brutal. Both teams REALLY hate one another as the rivalry is bitter.
Montreal-Boston...wow..that rivalry is bad...I have friends who went to the last two games and said it was like a CURVA scene in Montreal. Boston fans getting yelled at cursed at..chanted at...

As for the game: Montreal lost that heartbreaker in overtime which stunned all of us: Even I how stopped watching hockey with passion years ago am back into...during the playoffs you can't help but be back into it....the city is goes nuts. Its like living in Milan and being oblivious to soccer.
Anyhow if anyone saw that last play of Kovalev getting slashed and then letting go of the puck only to hit his own team mate. I think Souray said best:
"Ok he got slashed...but its double overtime..the ref had just called a penalty..he was letting many things go .......
Do you stop playing?"

Lombardia...do you get to watch any games?

Yeap SAKU is a great player:D

is it hard to get tickets to NHL playoffs maches?

Reza
15-04-2004, 12:31
Saku is great

Depending on the team it is very difficult to get playoff tickets, Canadian teams especially

Theoren
15-04-2004, 12:35
That is what I expested.

are the tickets expensive?

Reza
15-04-2004, 12:42
Very expensive if you ask me and most of all in Torornto where they know they can charge anything and people will come (both regular season and playoffs)

XZeRo3003
15-04-2004, 12:58
YES! San Jose leads 3-1! Hey, I watch hockey on TV, but my friends say it's so much better when you're watching it live, front seats. Well, knowing that, I better get some tickets to a hockey game soon!

Awww crap, I just found out that they are playing today at home, I could have gone!!! OK, whatever. They can win the series by winning tomorrow, let's hope they win.

1967....1967...1967!
(Last time Leafs won the CUP!)

Dude the Leafs are like Inter: Every year the same story (This is the year! Go Leafs Go!) and boom! Now with Sundin's injury it does not look good.
Rezag is right the leafs tickets are a hot commodity because the fans are NUTS..they will shell out any amount for the tickets.
The Canadiens tickets right now can be picked up for about 130 dollars from "scalpers" (guys who sell outside on the street corner) which is about 100 Euros. I have friends who went and paid about that price for game 3. I may be going to game 6 Saturday night.

Lombardia: yes that was a terrible loss and that error...ughhh. Anyways they really bounced back and might actually force a game seven.

Game 4 was brutal...Kovalev is really good but his problem is that he has too much pride.
When he misses a shot he leans back as if to say "OH MY GOD" instead of chasing the loose puck. When he got slashed with the puck he let the puck loose in his own zone. That was NUTS!
Its the playoffs...penaltys are not called as often and Montreal was lucky enough to get one.
As Souray said "fine he got slashed...but why stop playing?"
Anyhow, last nights whipping shut the Bruins up ...
Watch the Habs win it in Seven only to lose against a far easier team :depress:
Nothing new....

Ribiero is the NHL's version of Pippo.

Wish you could see the scene in Montreal: Keep in mind this city is the MECCA of hockey regardless of What Toronto fans say: We have the most Cups the most legendary players and are the most critical fans.
Every second car has a Habs banner. Every business has a "Go Habs Go" banner and it is all anyone talks about in Playoff time.
I will be at the game tonight...my company has tickets and since I never went the whole year I got picked to go :D
Don't worry Lomba I have faith you will bring the Habs good luck.

Habs tie the series and on to GAME 7!

I was at the game tonight and lost my voice in the first 5 minutes. I can say that the atmosphere was ELECTRIC worthy of Curva mention. The crowd was on the Bruins backs the whole game chanting the goalie's name: RAY-CROFT to the point where he once slammed his stick after a goal.
I had not been to a hockey game in a while...this feeling in Montreal was long overdue.
Albert: Penguins are a team I always respected for our local boy "Super Mario" who in my opinion is closer to Gretzky than people think.
I too saw the Great one Live...when I was a kid and his early days with Edmonton and in the 93 play off finals when Montreal won the Cup.

Tonight is BIG Lombardia

It is all everyone is talking about. We know about the history well! Time to re-write it.
However! If you look at this series: Montreal lost two matches in over-time (2nd overtimes I believe) and they were only outplayed in the first. The third loss was a stupid give away ... in other words they outplayed the Bruins who capitalized on errors.
The Bruins realize that they never really outplayed Montreal: They are not as good as they think.

Prediction: 4-2 Montreal wins! :D

Ottawa forced game Seven yesterday..thank God ..Toronto fans are annoying and start chanting "CUP" after their first series win!

Toronto-Ottawa rivalry is also bitter albeit recent. I really hope Ottawa takes it. Its too bad Canadian teams are knocking one another out though..Vancouver-Calgary and To-Ottawa.

anyway about last nights game.
tb played well the habs didn't. lecavallier finally showed up.
i think the whole key to the series is khabibulin.if the habs can find a way past him i reckon they could do it, but tb aren't 1st seeds for nothing. its gonna be tough for the habs this series, but they can do it. go habs!

Heartbreaking loss...

One minute left in the game..Canadiens lead
3-2...the home crowd is going absolutely CRAZY and Koivu and Kovalev come close to securing it. They don't even give Tampa a chance to remove the goalie for the extra man.
20 seconds left..face off in Canadiens zone. Montreal wins it..but Perrault falls...Tampa picks it up and scores with 17 seconds left.
A few minutes into overtime Tampa rides on the momentum and scores.
DAMN SHAME.

The mindset (although wrong) is that if Montreal wins the next game they will be in the same situation they were against Boston ..down 3 games to 1 at game 4. However, this is not Boston .. this team is fast, talented with one of the best keepers right now.

GO HABS GO.

Tampa-Philly I will not predict because its VERY tough...Tampa is constantly under-rated and has one of the fastest and most talented teams. Philly as usual is all about BIG players and physical play. If they don't beat Khabi (keeper) fast they can forget about it...they also have to figure out a way to hold down LeCavalier and St. Louis...good luck!

San Jose is all the talk but I think the Flames are the first REAL team that will give them trouble...I don't think San Jose is physical enough to hold down Igilna and company.

calgary have done brilliantly in knocking out the 3 top seeded teams in their conference (vancouver(3), detoit(1) and san jose(2), and have played excepionally well, but tampa bay have been the best team in the playoffs this year, khabibulin can be unbeatable at times, and have st. louis and lecavallier who can win games all by theselves. calgary's hopes lay at the skates and stick of jerome igilna and martin gelinas, they need big peformances.

i want a game 7 which goes into overtime, and then decided by a penalty shot? has that ever ever ever happened in the history of the nhl??

For those interested in Hockey

The hockey world cup just ended, in the final Canada beat Finland 3-2 to win, other semifinalists were the US and Czech Republic.
On the NHL front, there was no resolution to the labour problems and the owners will officially lock out the players on Wednesday and most probably no NHL for a long while.

Unbelievable...a whole season gone
------

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=115107&hubName=nhl

From this moment on, the 2004-2005 NHL season will be marked with an asterisk and caption that reads "Season Cancelled."

A last-minute effort to put together a framework for a new collective bargaining agreement proved to be too little, too late on Wednesday as commissioner Gary Bettman officially called off the remainder of the 2004-2005 season.

"When I stood before you in September, I said NHL teams would not play again until our economic problems had been solved," Bettman said.

"As I stand before you today, it is my sad duty to announce that because that solution has not yet been attained, it no longer is practical to conduct even an abbreviated season. Accordingly, I have no choice but to announce the formal cancellation of play for 2004-05."

The NHL is planning for the 2005-06 season, and will pursue more labour talks but Bettman warned the league is going to have to look at a "completely different economic model and it is going to have to have linkage (between revenue and player salary costs)."

"The best deal that was on the table is now gone," he added.

Bettman had given the Players' Association until 11am et to accept the league's final offer, which featured a $42.5-million US salary cap. The union's counter-offer called for a $49-million salary cap. A publicized letter-writing campaign outlining the $6.5 million gap between both sides broke down late Tuesday night, prompting the league to send memos to its 30 teams saying the season would be cancelled.

"We weren't as close as people were speculating...We were still very far apart," Bettman said, noting that $6.5 million multiplied by 30 teams is close to $200 million.

The only other letter that came on Wednesday morning was a press release from the NHLPA saying it had scheduled its own news conference for 4pm et/1pm pt in Toronto.

"It's too bad...but at least we have an answer," Vancouver Canucks captain Markus Naslund told TSN. "It's too bad for us players that we can't be out there to perform but there's a bigger picture, too."

It's the first time a major professional league in North America has cancelled an entire season due to a work stoppage. A Stanley Cup champion has been crowned every year since 1893 with the exception of 1919, when the Finals were canceled after five games due to a flu epidemic.

The union was willing to play with a salary cap at $49 million, but that was rejected by Bettman.

"If every team spent to the $49 million level you have proposed, total player compensation would exceed what we spent last season and, assuming for discussion purposes, there was no damage to the game, our player compensation costs would exceed 75 percent of revenues," the commissioner wrote on Tuesday. "We cannot afford your proposal."

Goodenow fired back with a spirited letter, stating the union would not present any future offers.

"Your claim that the clubs 'cannot afford' our proposal is based on your hypothetical fear of what would happen 'if every team spent to the $49 million level the players have proposed,'" he wrote. "I am at a loss to understand how you suggest your offer earlier (Tuesday) represents a $75 million increase when it only impacts the spending of nine teams!"

Early Tuesday evening, Bettman made what he termed the NHL's "last effort" to resolve the lengthy labor dispute, raising the amount of the previous salary cap offer of $40 million in an attempt to reach a new CBA with the players.

In a letter to Goodenow, Bettman put forth a "take it or leave it" offer and requested a response prior to his news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"We are increasing our offer of (Monday) by increasing the maximum individual team cap to $44.7 million ($42.5 million in salary and $2.2 million in benefits)," Bettman wrote. "This offer is not an invitation to begin negotiations - it's too late for that. This is our last effort to make a deal that's fair to the players and one that the clubs (hopefully) can afford. We have no more flexibility and there is no time for further negotiation."

Goodenow responded with his own letter to Bettman in which he presented a deal that would institute a $49 million cap - $3 million lower than the union's previous offer - plus $2.2 million in benefits.

Goodenow's six-year proposal also called for a $25 million floor that each team could fall below twice during the term, a minimum player salary of $300,000, a scale of payroll taxes and a 55 percent player share of 2005 playoff revenue.

While Bettman's proposal called for a hard salary cap, Goodenow's plan allowed teams the opportunity to exceed the threshold by 10 percent - up to $53.9 million - twice during its duration, with a 150 percent tax as a penalty.

After months of haggling over the issue of a salary cap, both the NHL and union made unprecedented concessions late Monday night. The NHL removed the linkage of salaries to league revenues while presenting a proposal that included a $40 million cap to the union.

Doing something it vowed never to consider, the NHLPA in turn backed away from its hardline stance against a cap and made a counterproposal that featured a $52 million limit on team payrolls. The union's latest offering also included the 24 percent rollback on existing contracts it presented in December and more aggressive tax thresholds and tax rates on team payrolls.

Under Bettman's proposal, NHL teams would have to divide less than $45 million among 24 players and would not be able to exceed the threshold. By comparison, NBA teams have nearly $44 million to divide among 12-15 players and also enjoy exceptions which allow them to exceed the cap without penalty.

Bettman locked out NHL players at the start of the 1994-95 season, when the league's average salary was $572,000. It has more than tripled to $1.8 million.

The lockout reached its 154th day Wednesday. If an agreement was reached, Bettman said the league had in place a 28-game regular season followed by a playoff with 16 participants.

The work stoppage has been in effect since Sept. 15, when Bettman announced that the league would lock out its players following the expiration of the most recent agreement. He indicated that teams had lost $1.8 billion over the last 10 years, including $224 million in 2003-04. Bettman added that the owners needed "an enforceable, defined relationship between revenues and expenses," so that a team's ability to compete was not dependent upon its ability to pay.

Two-and-a-half months passed before the two sides agreed to meet in their first formal bargaining session since the lockout began. It was at that point that the players offered a 24-percent rollback in salaries as part of their proposal. Though Bettman said the union finally acknowledged the league's financial troubles, the offer was rejected by the league.

The two sides met again in January, this time in a much smaller setting without Bettman or Goodenow at the bargaining table. But after almost 10 hours of talks over two days, both sides continued to cite "philosophical differences."

On Jan. 27, the league put forth a framework for a proposal that included a team-by-team salary cap between $32-$42 million with no luxury tax and team payrolls linked to revenues at a rate of 54-percent. The NHLPA did not look favourably on the proposal.

With the deadline of the season being cancelled hanging over their heads, Bettman and Goodenow finally met again for two days in early February. Both sides reported no progress.

On Feb. 9, Bettman set a weekend deadline for getting a new deal in place or else the season would be cancelled, acknowledging for the first time that a formal announcement would take place rather than let the season fade away without recognition.

For those keeping count, 834 of the NHL's 1,230 games this season had already been wiped out by Wednesday.

"What we must do now is not about the present or the short-term needs of this season. Rather, it is about the future of our league and 30 teams," Bettman said.

NHL will come back next year, with or without the existing players. The franchises are worth too much to waste for the owners.

Players though that they could (right or wrong) intimidate owners by striking. Now that this card has been played and wasted, the owners (right or wrong) will control everything from now on. The players that want to play next year will agree to a deal.

I also think NHL will be played next season, already the players had moved to accept some sort of cap.
My opinion on it is the owners as the guys running the business would eventaully get most of they want but leave enough loopholes (with players understanding) to make it work for the richer teams so there will still be quite a few very highly paid players.

I really thought that if anyone could revive a fresh breath into the torn down talks, it would certainly have been Gretzky, and with Lemieux at his side, was there ever any doubt ? Apparently even The Great One was unable to save the season...it was over before it started. The players are paid millions to play a boys game, and yet still cannot act like the professionals they claim to be. As a Canadian I have always believed that 'our' players have always played simply for the love of the game. What has happened to that ? Where has the passion for the game gone ? I am very disappointed at the way this whole strike has been handled on both sides. They are acting like children....well I did say it's a 'boys game'

As ice-hockey fan I am very disappointed that NHL season is over even not started, but as basketball fan I would be pleased if NBA happen the same - simple reason - many players will come to Europe to play for our teams [maybe for mine too :D], while european ice-hockey is not what I like :p146:

I think the main problem with the NHL if you call it a problem is that it has surpassed basketball in rate of growth. Yes Basketball is probably a bigger sport right now but Hockey is the fastest growing one at the moment. With new camera technology and stuff the coverage has improved thousand fold. With growth comes growing pains.
I this moment in time I support the owners. I dont think players have the right to hold their team, league, season, and the whole sport for hostage. I can see where they might have been coming from, but I disapprove at the method they used against the owners.
Let's take it from the owners point of view, especially the now underdog teams. As a result of the rapid growth of the sport you now have hockey teams playing in cities that lay in a desert or a place where it doesnt even snow. Growth attracts a whole new breed of businessman different than that of the traditional hockey owner. That is why the most vunerable teams losing their franchise are some teams up north finding it very difficult to compete with the new money teams in the south. You hockey fans from Canada know what I'm talking aboot. It is scary to think that Calgary or Edmonton or any team from the North abandoning their city for promise on the other side. AND I think the owners overall saw this as a serious issue and therefore to make it a level playing field to protect small town clubs, they brought forward the issues of the salary cap and rights to set market prices for players under contract.
To no ones surprise the players Union as always obstructs anything and everything. I tend to think that it is not the players, but the Union and it's non-playing representatives, that are ruinig it for everyone.
Enough said I'll say more later to allow some response to what I have said.

I always said the players are incredible greedy, we even had players having individual protest to get higher wages. I have no idea how they can do that while under contract, but I don't know their regulations when it comes to that. Says something when one of the players doing that (Swede Daniel Alfredsson) is one of the head figures in NHLPA... As a fan I would not exactly feel for those greedy bastards.

But all is well in europe, hockey is hot now that we have our and some of your best players here. There have even been some canadians in my city watching our team. :)

Yup, players are too greedy, but mind that club administration is even more greedy. That money amount which is earned of TV broadcasts or money from comercial business is much bigger than that which is paid for players. So I do reckon that both sides are guilty for that, and both should approach the compromise.

Yes I would agree that the owners have some mea culpa in this affair too. But I think TV broadcasts brought in more money to the game so of course players should get more. But that's been done already. They want more than that. In any business that is operated the biggest expenditure for a company, sports teams included, is the cost of labor with attachments (health insurance, injury, liabilities etc.) Can you imagine if the bulk of your employees makes 6-7 figures in pay? Not to mention the others you employ running the offices, maintenance, down to the guy riding the Zamboni. That's a big overhead. Most owners believe it or not have the teams more as a creature comfort hobby than a money making franchise. It's usually a side thing that they use to complement their real business/aspirations.

Have you seen Lemieux quote? He said that he believed the owners where hiding money and was lying to the players... up until he became a owner himself and realised that there was no money at all, half if not more of the clubs are making huge losses. Of course they have to blame themself a bit, but when star players can go on strike to get higher wages then there is something wrong...

Well like I had written in an earlier post. These players no nothing about business. All they do is play the sport for Uber cash. For that I can partially forgive them. But when it comes down to the Union that represents their interests, these mothersf-kers are the guilty party. You have a panel of represntatives who are players in the NHL, but the guy pushing the issue is some lawyer or non-player in the sport. The guy probably never picked up a hockey stick before in his life. It is they who we really need to focus on.

NHL, NHLPA reach tentative CBA deal

Done Deal

TSN.ca Staff with CP files

7/13/2005 2:35:28 PM

And now for the words everyone has been waiting to hear: The deal is done!

The NHL and NHL Players' Association have finally reached an agreement (pending ratification) on a new six-year collective bargaining agreement that - if approved by the NHL board of governors next Thursday and the rank and file membership of the NHLPA next Tuesday - will officially end the stalemate on July 21.

The agreement, a complex document reportedly numbering more than 600 pages, came after the two sides staged marathon negotiating sessions for nine consecutive days. Since the 2004-05 NHL season was officially cancelled on Feb. 16, the league and union have met on 82 occasions, leading to an agreement that will revamp the way the entire professional hockey industry conducts its business.

The league went into this lockout, which started on Sept. 15, 2004, seeking cost certainty and believes it has achieved that with a new economic system from top to bottom.
Related Info

It is expected both the NHL and NHLPA will move to ratify the agreement within the next seven days, with a formal announcement on July 21. During that time, it is expected the new CBA will be distributed to all in the hockey industry so they can begin getting themselves up to speed on a myriad of new rules and regulations.

Among the most significant features are:

- a hard team-by-team salary cap with a payroll of range of $21 million to $39 million (in the first year), which includes all player costs (benefits, insurance etc).

- the league's total expenditure on player costs (salaries, bonuses, benefits and insurance) is not permitted to exceed 54 per cent of defined hockey-related revenue and the salary cap and payroll range will move up or down as revenues increase or decrease each year of the deal.

- a 24 per-cent salary rollback for any NHL player who has time remaining on an existing contract, keeping in mind that the players will receive none of the monies they were slated to earn in the lost season of 2004-05.

- liberalized free agency (including unrestricted status at 27 by year four of the deal), a more restrictive entry level system, totally revamped salary arbitration, improved pension benefits and a revenue-sharing plan.

- Age eligibility for unrestricted free agency at age 31 in 2005, 29 in 2006, 28 in 2007. In 2008, it's 27 or seven years of NHL tenure.

This agreement (pending ratification) will kick off the most bizarre and busiest off-season in NHL history after the league became the first major professional loop to lose an entire year to labour strife.

As tutorials are conducted to allow NHL owners, general managers, NHL players and player agents to understand the new economic order, plans are already in the works for the two ratification votes.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will be recommending acceptance of this agreement to the governors, so a simple majority of the league's 30-man ruling body will be enough to ratify it.

It's also expected the NHLPA's executive committee, led by president Trevor Linden, will be endorsing the deal, which means a simple majority of the NHLPA's more than 700 members will be enough to make it binding. For those players who cannot physically make it to the membership meeting, the vote will be conducted through the NHLPA's secure website, The Source.

"I don't think the deal that we're going to get would have been ratified last summer," said Sean Burke, a free agent like many of his brethren. "But I just think we've been worn down to the point where at this stage the deal would really have to be incredibly bad for the guys not to vote it in. At least that's the sense I'm getting."

Assuming both groups ratify, the NHL is expected to begin a brief transition period before the league fully re-opens for business.

But before teams and players start to concern themselves with the specifics of transition - such as the buying out of some players to allow teams to meet cap requirements or the attempted signing of 2003 and 2004 draft picks who would re-enter the 2005 entry draft if not signed - the league is expected to unveil significant changes to the game, on and off the ice.

Because no season was played in 2004-05, there is no order of selection for the 2005 entry draft, which is scheduled to take place as a scaled-down event in Ottawa's Westin Hotel on July 30. Usually, teams draft in inverse order of finish from the recently-concluded season, but this time there will be a weighted draft lottery (with the teams who have fared poorest over the last few years to get marginally better odds than those who fared well) to determine who gets the first overall pick and the right to pick young phenom Sidney Crosby. That lottery is scheduled to take place on July 21 when the NHL is expected to formally announce the new CBA.

When it comes to 2003 draft picks, like Philadelphia's highly-touted first-rounders Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, those players will be eligible for the 2003 rookie limit, with a 24% rollback, along with performance bonuses that can total $850,000. This gives those players incentive to sign with the team that drafted them in 2003 rather than re-enter the 2005 draft.

In addition to that major business, the NHL is also expected to unveil significant rule changes aimed at making the game more exciting and fan friendly, including shootouts to end tie games and the removal of the red line for the purpose of allowing two-line passes.

While the regular season will remain at 82 games long for each team, the format of that schedule may be altered.

Once the NHL's formal news conference is put to bed, along with the lottery and rule changes, the brief transition period should unfold in order to take care of the loose ends from the expired CBA. At some point, the NHL will declare itself open for business and NHL teams will be sorting through a huge pool of unrestricted free agents as many teams make themselves over from the ground up.

Whether it is the brave new world the NHL hopes, remains to be seen, but the level of activity and uncertainty will be higher than at any other time in league history.

For now, though, the only thing that matters in the short term is this: The deal (pending ratification) is done.

The lockout wiped out the entire 2004-05 season, including all 1,230 regular-season games, denying hockey fans a Stanley Cup champion for the first time since a flu epidemic cancelled the 1919 final. The NHL became the first major professional league in North America to loose a season from beginning to end because of labour strife.

Once Bettman announced the season cancelled Feb. 16, both sides returned to the negotiating table March 11 in the first of 44 meetings aimed at making sure the 2005-06 season wouldn't be delayed.

The two sides met every single week starting in early May and didn't let up until the end, cramming in long days in the final six weeks in an effort to finally get it done.

I really like the shootouts actually. The team that loses doesn't lose anything through a shootout and the winning team just gets an extra point. They are much less of a lottery in hockey than in soccer. Most of the time the goalie have a good chance to save the shots. The shootouts are really exciting and get the fans into the game as well. I had a chance to catch a few shootouts here in the AHL, and I'll tell you the stadium gets LOUD in shootouts. I am a huge fan of the shootouts especially with the prospect of the young speedy Habs making fools out of goalies this coming season.

I've been keeping a close eye on what they have been doing with the team, and I hate to say it but they are in for a good year, we have our staples...Theodore, Koivu, Zednick, Kovalev, Souray, Bonk...and we've added a few to mix it up.

Right now it looks like the Habs are in for a good season, but who knows what will happen in the "new" NHL. I still think that the Senators are still a little better than us but I think the new rule changes really favour faster and more skilled teams like the Canadiens. But definetly success hinges on the play of Theodore and I fully expect to see the Hart trophy winning goalie perform.

I found out today that my father and I have a ticket package to flyers games this year YEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHAWWWWWWW (and no most people from Philly don't say yeewhhaww)

Right now I am thinking that the Flyers, Bruins, sadly the Lightning, Devils, Penguins will be the class of the East . . . sad to see Toronto take its lumps in free agency even though I hated them I admired their playing style . . . the Hab's need to get good again too so they can keep their streak of winning one stanley cup every decade alive (that is impressive) I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE PUCK TO DROP!

hey guys..

since im living in montreal, everyone around has told me that i have to watch hockey, and im really looking forward to it..

although i need to know a few things:

does montreal have a good team compared to the others in our league? Are we the Milan of america? Do we have good history? How long is the game? I think its 20 mins for a third.. then a break(how long?) then another 20 mins then break then 20 mins.. if it ends up as a tie, there will always be over time, is that correct? how will it be decided in over time? Golden goal? or how many minutes will be given?

Who is our star player to look forward to? Our first game is Sep 18 vs Atlanta Thrashers.. pre-season friendly.. how expensive is a season-ticket? and a normal ticket? I heard i can get as cheap as 30 dollars, but are the seats good? I'd like to sit somewhere where i can be around the crazy fans and watch the game..

Historically Montreal are the best with the most championships, but the last time Montreal won the Stanley Cup was in 1993 and hasn't been the best team but certainly not the worst since then. Things are looking better since two or three years and there is progress with a young, exciting team.
The game is three 20 minute periods with 15 minute breaks, with a 5 min. overtime if there is a tie and starting this season a shootout if it remains tied after that.

Seats are pretty difficult to find but especially more so for saturday night games or games vs Toronto Maple Leafs...I really don't know how much a season ticket is these days but back in previous years there used to be a waiting list for one...been away from Montreal too long. Games are always crazy but obviously nothing like a football game and if you find single tickets I believe 30 or so is the cheapest...I used to attend games in mid 90s and I could get a 'bad' seat for 20 dollars.

Our current stars are captain and center Saku Koivu (he is Finnish), Alexei Kovalev (high scoring russian) and goalie Jose Theodore.

Go Habs Go

Hitman of course you have to be a Habs fan. I don't think any Montrealers would accept any less. One thing I can tell you about Montreal fans is unlike other fans they are NOT bandwagon supporters, in otherwords they are with them think and thin.
As Rez said we are the winniest tean in the NHL with an amazing 24 Stanley Cups and were home to some of the greatest hockey players to ever play the game. Patrick Roy, Henri Richard, Guy Lafleur, Jean Beliveau and Ken Dryden. Now we house Koivu, Kovalev, Zednick and Souray and of course Theodore....all of which are great in their own right. Oh yea if an opposing teams fan mentions the Riberio incident, well we don't even try to defend that one...lol I also like the fact that our team is about 45% Canadian born :5ok:
Our greatest rival is by far the Toronto Maple Leafs and trust me we HATE them ! Their supporsts will rival Inter's any day of the week.
As far as tickets go they go on sale this Saturday at 10 am and are very resonable. I believe the cheapest being $27.00. But Billy has said that if you go to Bell Centre just prior to a game you are able to get tickets outside the stadium. As far as where to go to watch with other Habs fans you'll have to check with Billy on that as well.
I hope you come to enjoy the game as much as we do here. If you have any other questions, I love to talk about hockey !!!
Oh yes and when we say Habs it's in Reference to Les Habitants...you'll see the "H" inside the large "C" on their logo
There is a preseason game on September 22nd against Toronto...but it prpbably won't be the A lines...best to wait for regular season.
If you want to check on things for yourself, www.canadiens.com is a great site.
ENJOY !!!

Hitman..I didn't know you are now a Montrealer. Yes, season tickets are expensive...thousands...some people buy in groups of 4 and split the costs and games....also gives you first choice for playoff tickets.
To be honest everyone in Montreal is a habs fan but not everyone follows passionately except when its playoff time ... then Montreal will become NUTS.
Even though I live (as you do) in what is probably the 'heart land' of hockey I still watch 3 times more soccer matches and coverage than Hockey. However, with the Canadiens and hockey one always knows what is going on even if you follow passively because its on the cover of newspapers and on literally every talk radio show and conversation in and around town.

However one day when we were playing outside, a mob of brats attacked my bro and took his cap from his head. I started to run after them but they threw the cap to each other so that I could not catch the one with it. We caught one guy but he told nothing. Me and my friends beat him a bit but he was still scilent. That is the end of that cap but a start of neverending love to Leafs by my bro.

The result was Leafs 4 - 3 Habs.
It wasn't aired on any channel except for Leafs tv however that will change October 5th once the regular season starts. Hockey night in Canada airs on probably about 8 stations...lol Yes we love our hockey ! As for the game tonight, we did really well since not only did our top players not play they didn't even dress. Our starting line up is Koivu, Kovalev and Zednik. Hockey differs from soccer in such that each team is not blessed with a Sheva, once in a while you get a Wayne or a Mario that comes along, but for the most part the strength in a team comes for the forward lines collectively. I personally do not hate any one particular player on the team however I think most Habs fans will agree that we are often embarrassed by the antics of Mike Ribeiro. Although I did read an article yesturday where Theodore was stated as saying that Mike has grown up a lot and is not the same player he was, hopefully meaning, he will more effectively be using his talents. As far as new signings, this year we have only added Mathieu Dandenault a strong and very LARGE defenceman.....lol He is a force in his own right. The age of our team.... well we are currently running a fairly young team, Kovalev I believe is our oldest player at 32 and that is not old at all by hockey standards. Oh and last but not least there aren't "songs" to speak of, just a lot of yelling and cheering and jumping up and down ....Enjoy !
Rae as far as your perspective in comparing Montreal to the likes of Inter and Juve, that is YOUR opinion and thusly cannot be disputed, however I don't agree with you at all. Montreal has heart, soul and a love of the sport that compares to few, Toronto on the other hand is a dirty, cheating team. THAT is my opinion......

 canadiens ain't Milan... they are juve/inter/roma etc. :5dito: :yuck: and Milan is Flames :firedev: RED DEVILS :de3:

No NHL team is Juve...Juve has a history of drug use (EPO scandal) and favortism (see their last 5 scudetto's). No team has such a bad reputation. Especially not Montreal who have always won with class.

As for Inter?? Being Inter implies buying up tons of talented players but having a team with no heart..how can Montreal be Inter when they barely buy big name stars..in fact they have not in a long time ... Koivu is our biggest name and he was drafted...before him was Patrick Roy..also drafted.

Basketball is more popular game in world, that's for sure. Just look at the situation in Europe - there are only Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Russia which find ice hocky more exciting than basketball. Plusing two north american states there are only 7 countries which enjoy that so much. Basketball has far more states in it's possession ;)

Moreover, as I am Lithuanian [you know that all people of Lithuania are crazy about Basketball] I prefer basketball, but I do not diminish the charm of ice hockey. I like it very much also :respect:

Let me tell you Chris....IF in fact the Flyers win the cup this year I will be there right with ya with freakin bells on I swear ! ....lol
It's NOT gonna happen ! But hang on to the dream Chris, hang on tight ! ;)

Hitmannq8 it's not that we don't have big name players, we do, but I guess that is where hockey differs from soccer. The lines are more effective than the individual players ie. Koivu, Kovalev and Zednick. The players really do depend on each other. We have a lot of great players, of course you have to remember that I am completely biased when speaking about the Habs.
Our coach is Claude Julien, he came to Montreal in January 2003 from the Hamilton Bulldogs, which is our farm team.
