Solskjaer raises hopes of return

Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he hoped to return next season following a career-threatening injury to his right knee.
The 31-year-old Norway international had surgery in Sweden in August to transplant cartilage into the joint.

"I'm in no doubt that I'll play again," Solskjaer told Aftenposten Daily.

"The problem will be the speed but we're talking about eight months' time. It's going as it should with the knee. I'm slavishly following a programme."

Solskjaer last played for United as a late substitute in May's FA Cup final win over Millwall.

His contract with United runs out in 2006, by which time he will have been at the Premier League club for 10 years.

It would be good to see Ole back in action. I have never seen anyone as clinical as him in front of goal (and that includes Ruud). Its like he is always in the right place at the right time. :)

Points dropped again. We're making it very very difficult for ourselves. We should have scored more.

I remember seeing a video in which he helped the training of Utds youth team. Ole was demonstrating how to volley and he simply said "you do it like this" at this point the other trainer started floating crosses over and he smashed all of them in, right foot, left foot, the keeper didnt stand a chance :D then the camera panned round to show the kids he was teaching, who were all stood silently in awe :proud:

Its all the more annoying because at times in the first half we tore them to shreds. The game should have been over as a contest by half time and we end up letting them have a point  we are'nt gonna get many better chances to catch the leaders....

He is a fine keeper. I read that he has finally grown tired of Newcastles calamatous defending, saying it is harming his reputation. I think the main problem he will have in securing a move is that he signed a new contract not too long ago so the newcastle board will probably price him out of the market.

Not the best way to teach kids though. ;) To perform so flawlessly, and then ask the kids to repeat that (which I'm sure they must have tried to do).

But he is brilliant, isn't he? I bet if he were playing in defence and a cross was floated into the penalty area, you'd still find Ole there looking to score. Its just his natural instinct.

Its all the more annoying because at times in the first half we tore them to shreds.

But we switched off in the second. We're trying too hard to be Juve (which is not a very good thing to do).

I have read somewhere that Shay Given is disappionted and wants to leave NUFC.... we may take him IMO.... cuz he is one of my most beloved goalkeepers...

He is a very good goalkeeper, but prone to the "one howler per month" syndrome. I don't know if that is because of the shaky defence in front of him or not. He is quite short too to be a commanding goalkeeper (like Barthez, who was a fantastic stopper but never inspired confidence).

yeah.. WTF it was.. I woke up 3 a.m. to see the match then only 1 point we could grab. :depress: We dropped points just 3 mins from time!!

seemed like we played as 11 players, not as 1 team. Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Scholes have pushed themselves too hard just to pass over defenders.. then eventually they lost the ball..

anyhow, Bouba Diop's goal was amazing.. in-swinging longshots are always unpredictable, Carrolls just couldn't reach the ball..

btw, have you guys read this?

Sir Alex: We'll get Milan

Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Manchester United are destined to meet Milan in the next phase of the UEFA Champions League.

The United boss has given his views ahead of Friday's draw for the knockout stages in Nyon and believes The Red Devils are long overdue a pairing with last season's Serie A scudetto winners.

The two clubs last met in Europe in 1969 and former Old Trafford favourite Jaap Stam has already indicated that he would love to return to his old stamping ground.

"We've played Monaco, Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen twice," Ferguson told United's official website.

"We've played against Juventus so many times.

"The only team that we haven't met is AC Milan, but I think fate will probably throw them our way.

"I have that feeling."

United finished second in their qualifying group behind Lyon, after surrendering their advantage over the French champions by slumping to a 3-0 hiding at the hands of Fenerbahce when Ferguson fielded a shadow side.

Consequently, United will face one of five teams in February and March - Milan, Juventus, Internazionale, Monaco or Leverkusen.

Not the best way to teach kids though. To perform so flawlessly, and then ask the kids to repeat that (which I'm sure they must have tried to do).

Maybe its not the best way to go about it, but the alternative was Diego Forlan and we definately dont want our future stars learning his habits :D

seemed like we played as 11 players, not as 1 team. Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Scholes have pushed themselves too hard just to pass over defenders.. then eventually they lost the ball..

yeah, there were too many heroes out there  in fact there is a rumour that after the game Alan Smith started shouting at Ronaldo going for glory instead of making a simple pass (the chance in the 2nd half when he could have given Smith a tap-in...) Ronaldo started arguing back and things got bad, with Ronaldo storming out shouting stuff in Portuguese  If its true then this is certainly not good for team spirit but Fergie will sort it out :D

I don't think I'll watch the matches if United do draw Milan.

But the way Milan fans are thinking is ridiculous. From the way United play, its like they're ideally suited to play a team like Milan. United would have a much better chance of going through of they drew Milan compared to if they drew a Spanish team.

United don't mind when teams defend deep (which Milan do). They are used to it. They have enough decent midfielders to win a midfield battle. They have a good defence. And they have Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

And they have enough nutters to mess up the skilfull play of Seedorf, Pirlo and Kaka.

I reckon United have as much chance of winning it as Milan.

And what the hell can Gilberto do? Unless thay actually develop an expansive passing game and not just chase long balls down with 'pacey' players, they'll struggle.
It was not patchy form. They have been found out. Against teams who defend deep, Arsenal cannot score.

Really good matchups early in the CL this year and ofcourse this one's the biggest (bigger than Juve-Real imo ;) ) I think Milan matchup very well in pretty much every position against ManU, just have to watch out the against the wide play of Ronaldo. Barca may be all the bollocks right now, but I don't think they'll make it past Mourinho's dire Chelsea.

Chelsea have a better balance to their side, if they played 10 times i'd back Chelsea to win 6. Barca have the "moment of magic" factor which could get them past anyside though, that tie is going to be close

Utd are used to playing 5 across midfield so to play a side that isnt aiming to draw 0 - 0 will be a welcome change :D

This game could hinge on Rooney and Kaka. positionally Rooney is very awkward to stop unless you commit a player solely to the task. Pirlo isnt really the type who could/should do it so Gattuso may have to, which will leave gaps elsewhere....likewise Utd dont really have a player who can stop Kaka now, Keane hasnt got the legs to do that sort of work anymore, which could lead to Phil Neville doing another of his hatchet jobs :dielaugh:

I think Milan will edge it though, home advantage in the 2nd leg will make a big difference if they manage to keep Utd out at Old Trafford.

On attack, Cesc would be better than Gilberto any day, taking into account only their skills. But Gilberto's football experience and more importantly his experience on Arsenal are more valuable to the team. I can assure you Arsenal's problem is not on attack. They DID go through a patch, and while it is tough for them to attack against teams that defend deep, Arsenal's offense is by FAR the best in the league, if I'm not mistaken they have at least 10 more goals than their nearest rivals. The fact of the matter is that Gilberto and Vieira were having a GREAT understanding, and they were just plugging the middle of the midfield, rarely did the opponent attack them comfortably through the middle. Nonetheless, this affected the entire team when they played defence.

Arsenal's problem is CLEARLY on defense, there's no question about that. That's why we need Gilberto, we can sacrifise Cesc's offense for Gilberto's defense.

AND YAY!!!! WHAT A PREDICTION NATASA!!! MILAN - MANU!!!!!! YOU GUYS ARE SO DEAD!!!!!

If we do indeed get Stam back, you're CL season is over in February; I would put 50 US dollars on it.

did you read about Wenger targetting Ledley King? he is a very good centre back (Englands 5th best IMO) but the price quoted is £20m  Maybe the plan would be to shift Toure to play alongside Vieira, i think he was a midfielder originally so it wouldnt be to hard to change back.

no no no lol. I'm not biased against England or anything. I'm kinda biased againt british football in particular. As a kid I didn't used to watch much European football, but for some reason I just hated the british football. There was something about the british football that would turn my guts, I don't know what exactly. Anyways, I've almost rehabilitated from that problem, except it's kinda hard for me to accept that an English player is good unless I actually watch them. ie, Scholsey. I used to hate his guts for some reason, until I realized how great of a player he is for Man U. Now I guess I could say that I uhhhh......I uh...... KINDA.... like him....... *gulp*. Yeah but most of those goals came before the massacre at Old Trafford. Three, Four, Five in each match before that, even while their defence was leaking at least a goal per game. Then they dried up and even the odd goal scored by the opposition which didn't seem like a big deal before became a threat in every match.

Yes, they did not have a Plan B, that is, what to do when teams defend deep. They were scoring for fun with all those long balls and crosses along the ground on the counter attack.

For people who don't remember, United abandoned that style of play back in 1995 because they wanted to crack Europe (where most teams defend deep).

Anyway, great attacking performance against Palace. Reminded me of the United of old (not too old though). Ronney looked a bit off colour in the first half. Fletch was brilliant. Giggsy turned back the years a few times during the match :)

But two bad goals given away. Hope we fix that.
And hope Ruud makes a speedy recovery.

We scored 5 without trying too hard, and we did it without Ruud :D

It seemed to me that their is a greater fluency to our play without Ronaldo on the pitch as Fletcher fits into Utds style better. Most of the attacking players were quite happy to shift the ball around with only 1 or 2 touches and with Scholes, Rooney, Giggs and Smith all switching between attack and midfield it was simply too much for Palace to handle  Ronaldo certainly provides a different dimension to the attack but i hope he saw yesterday how it is easier to dismantle a team through passing and movement than through stepovers :D

Ruud should be back in a month and Saha soon after so by the time the Milan game arrives we should have our full strikeforce available :)

obviously it was only Palace, and Emerson Boyce is no Nesta :D but its always good to score 5 goals ;)

Scholes is well and truely back in business. When on this form he is like a magnet, wherever the ball is he is available and he is extemely hard to contain. As for Giggs, i just hope they delay offering his contract extension until the end of the season as he seems to be playing brilliantly now that he has to prove himself again :)

yeah, id agree that on present form Milan are the better side, but gradually the pieces are coming together for Utd. I said on here a few weeks ago about how good it would be if all Utds attackers hit form at the same time and now that Giggs and Scholes seem to be playing with confidence again it is possible that it could happen :D a lot can happen in 2 months though...

Brilliant. United always pull out super performances when they have a tough run of games. You don't even need to think back to '99. Cantona issues Man Utd job hint -from MEN

Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona would consider returning to the club as manager one day.

But the Frenchman, who made 191 United appearances, would not come back if he felt he could not be creative.

"I will not return in the near future," he told MUTV. "If I come back I will need to be involved in football for two or three years because things change.

"I do not want to be a manager like everybody else, playing the same system. I want to create something."

Cantona says that he would like to follow in the footsteps of Johan Cruyff, who was an innovative coach when he led Barcelona to European Cup glory in 1992.

"I remember the 1970s with Ajax and after that Cruyff as a manager at Barcelona," Cantona added. "It was a new system.

"It is like in music - when you are a rock star and create something new."

The 38-year-old also stated that he is against American tycoon Malcolm Glazer's attempt to take over the club.

"I am against this kind of thing because I am like a child - I am a dreamer. I don't want these kind of people to come here," he said.

"If it is not Manchester United, if it is not a club where he can earn so much money, do you think he would love to come?"

Meanwhile, Cantona is at the centre of a storm after using an obscenity on MUTV on Sunday.

Cantona was appearing on a show where supporters quiz guests and it was broadcast at 5.30pm.

yeah, any silverware would be welcome and the FA Cup is still worth winning. I think the league is closer than it appears on paper, 2 months ago Arsenal were "unbeatable" and easily favourites, now Chelsea are going strong. The simple truth is that in 10 years no one will care who was top in December, its who's top in May that counts and theres still a lot of points to play for

I have watched him play for Bayern a few times. Although from those performances it is difficult to tell how he'd do in England. Bayern's play is much slower and methodical.

Also, most of their forward passing goes through Ballack, so Hargreaves doesn't seem that involved at times.

i think whoever it is that replaces Keane has to have the ability to drive the team, to motivate them when things are going bad. Unfortunately players with that ability tend to be highly valued, Gattuso, Vieira, Gerrard etc are all near unatainable.

There are cheaper options available but i just dont see that inspirational edge to Hargreaves?

yeah, Gerrard is the ideal replacement and Fergie has said as much, but Liverpool and Utd generally dont do business with each other. That said, Leeds liked to class themselves as Utds equals and we still stole Cantona, Rio and Smith from them, a few more bad years for the scousers and maybe they'l become our feeder club too ;)

i see a keano in smithy?as far as character goes. I think once hes more settled into the club he will become just as influential as keane ..since hes already well on his way.

yeah, he certainly has the same edge to his game and the rate he has accumulated red cards in his career is second to none :) i think Fergie is definately trying to reintroduce that competitive hunger, Heinze (who i've heard rumours that said he could switch positions and be our next Keane? ) as well as Smith and Rooney. Its like he's thinking "if we cant have Keane, we'll at least have lots of mini-keano's" :D

And there is still half a season to go in the League. I, as a fan, am always optimistic about our chances.

exactly, its far too early to write us off, if titles were one in December then Newcastle wouldnt have an empty trophy cabinet.....

The FA Cup is big because of its history and prestige being the oldest trophy in football. However saying that it is the third most important trophy for an English club after the Premiership and UCL. No club would be dumb enough to prefer the FA Cup over the EPL or UCL titles.

I would rather see them win it rather than the league, just because ive only had that feeling once and id like to feel it again, if we get knocked out by A.C Milan I wont see it as the end of the world, both are strong sides and theres no shame from being knocked out by ac milan. Woman ... this is a Milan forum! :D You should convert to a Milan fan through and through for the tolerance and hospitality of Milan Mania alone! :) A Milan forum that allows freedom of speech and welcomes people to speak their mind to the limit wishing that Milan loses against Utd. by United fans who support Milan as well is unique! No offence. Just kidding :) The United fans here are some of my favourite posters including Rapierist who called me a muppet!! LOL :D :beach:

Not really. Considering how similar Milan might seem to United to fans of other clubs.
Both have similar club colours (something that made me like both clubs instantly), both clubs have won most of their trophies playing attractive, attacking football (and have absolutely boring defensive arch-rivals in Juve and Liverpool), both have this weird tendency to self-destruct suddenly only to astonish with crazy comebacks during matches. The whole devil-mascot thing (although Fred the Red is a 90's marketing disgrace and should be banned).

The only thing I don't like about Milan is Silvio Berlusconi. And for people who say that I have to like him because he is "our President" and has invested a lot of money into the club, well, he still remains a corrupt greedy ***.

Well, you guys support Man U, and there's not much I can to about that. But here's a simple question (or two).

If Milan played Man U RIGHT NOW, who do you really think would win?

and

Who do you think WILL win this game?

Clearly if you support Man U, there's not much I can do about that, I'm not going to insult you (although I am tempted), but at least I'd like to know if you Mancs still have ome common sense

As for my answer, Man U would get their a$$es WHOOPED if they played right now.

And for the Feburary fixture, Milan's gonna win it.

Why don't you Man U supporters just side with Milan on this one? I mean, you're gonna lose. When Barca played Milan, I sided with Barca, but at least Barca won one of the matches, Man U's gonna get trashed here. Come on guys, be one of us , just for now...

Wow... It's a little hard for me to beleive that you'd preffer League over UCL, I mean, the difference is clear cut. In league you're really competing against Chelsea, Arsenal, maybe Liverpool, and maybe in this case Everton. You play against Everybody, but as far as the title is concerned, you're only competing against 3, maybe four teams. In UCL you're competing against the supposed 16 best teams of Europe. Here you're competing against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and MANY more. By winning you're claiming the spot as the BEST team in Europe! How can you say you'd rather win league?

Come on guys, be one of us , just for now...

We are always one of you. We are Milan supporters. But we also love Manchester United. And right now, since you are hell-bent on trashing one of our beloved clubs, we have got to stand up and defend United. We'd do the same if we were posting at a United forum where everybody wanted to write off Milan's chances.

Not that I am saying that one team will paste the other. In fact, I won't even be watching the matches. Whoever wins, I'll hope they can continue on the path to glory.

And no, United will not get pasted even if the match were held now. Whoever wins, would win by the narrowest of margins, I think.

How can you say you'd rather win league?

Even as a Milan supporter, I value a victrious Scudetto campaign more than a victorious CL campaign.

The League provides excitement throughout the year.
The competition, though among just a few teams at the top, still provides more excitement than the Champions League (which provides two matches a month, i.e., if you're lucky, for about five months or so).

A League win is more emotionally satisfying. It just feels more hard-fought, over the course of about eight months, with trips all around the country. Brilliant performances mixed with off-days, and the fact that you always have a chance right up until the finish of the season provided you are close enough.
A loss does not necessarily kill your chances of winning the title off (like in knock-out tournaments).

Look at it this way. Winning the Champions League gives you prestige. Winning the League gives you pride.

We'd rather be proud of ourselves than seek respect from others.

I think they applied to host the 2006 Champions League final (not sure if they got it) so i guess it should be finished some time next season, though there was some sort of delay with raising the massive arch...from what i've seen it looks really good and has some of the best facilities in the world

On a personal level I believe that nothing is more gratifying for me than seeing the Milan captain lift the UCL trophy in the sky! It is probably the most satisfying football moment for a football fan. I've felt both emotions of the Scudetto and the UCL and the UCL easily tops it for me. That is just my personal take on it. :)

I must say i see both points of view, as Utds win over Bayern was probably the single victory i enjoyed most in all my years as a fan, but im not sure if that was because of the trophy it won or the circumstances of the win (2 last minute goals !!  )

That said, there is always a slight element of doubt. In 99 Utd were unbeaten and did actually play many of the best teams in Europe but in many years its possible to get to the final without having to beat the best teams. In the league there are no excuses, everyone plays everyone else and the result is just about as conclusive as can be obtained :D

If i HAD to choose one over the other i'd probably pick the CL, but only because i've seen Utd lift 8 titles and only 1 European Cup, i'd much rather they just won both instead ;)

this is the great worry, as when he is gone who else will be able to walk onto the pitch and immediately take control :dontkn:

Its games like yesterday that show how much he is worth to us still, Villa had started the 2nd half well and its no coincidence that their threat dissapeared when he arrived. Im not sure if he is physically capable of starting every match anymore though, at 33 (and with the injuries he has collected over the years) it is probably too much to ask him to start 4 games in 9 or 10 days.

And no money for the transfer window, unavailability/lack of similar transfer targets and no capable players from the youth team to at least attempt to fill his shoes makes it an even more depressing scenario.

Its true that he cannot start every match anymore. Makes you feel how lucky we were to land Keano after Robbo had reached a similar stage.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although, I must mention that Rio did try to wade into midfield every time he had the ball and tried to get some passing going. Of course, the ball was passed straight back to Mickey Silvestre who duly launched a difficult-to-control 50 yard ball into Alan Smith each time.

If they played now Utd would find it tough without Ruud and Saha (who's pace can trouble anyone) but in Utds favour would be the fact that Giggs, Scholes and Keane are all on form now and Ronaldo's holiday break means he will be rejuvenated too. That midfield can pose any team problems and with Smiths aggresion, Rooneys guile and a solid defence that has conceded a goal only once every 2 games since Rio returned....Milan would have plenty to think about.

Its true that he cannot start every match anymore. Makes you feel how lucky we were to land Keano after Robbo had reached a similar stage.

Manchester United ARE a legendary club. So why the hell are they in fourth place??? *cough* THEY SUCK *cough*

Barcelona haven't gotten a trophy in like ten years. But they are lead La Liga with 9 points.

When I sided with Barcelona, it was because i didn't think Milan was better. And I hope you haven't forgotten that Barcelona beat milan 2-1 in the away leg. I truly beleived that they were very even.

In the case, I truly believe Milan is WAY better. I don't see how one could even say man U has a chance, if they played right now. And some Mancs just don't accept that, which gets on my nerves. Because clearly Man U has been going through a very ugly patch of bad form. Yes, the match will be in Febrary, plenty of time for improvement for both teams, but lemme repeat, people don't find Milan supperior RIGHT NOW

And stop talking about history and legend. If being a legendary team meant that you were a great team, Man U wouldn't be stuck in fourth place

of course it doesn't. History is a very valuable part of a team. But just because a team such as Manchester United and Real Madrid has a great history doesn't mean that they are a great team right now. History is history. It's in the past. I'm not pissed off because you guys support Manchester United. If that's all you did, I wouldn't complain. but rating them so highly with such a sore squad just because their History is great makes no sense. It's like if Real Madrid bought terrible players, and I said omg, I think Real Madrid is definitely as good as Man U. See, one can't do that. First step for me would be to admit I have a **** squad. Second would be to admit that we have heart, and that's what will help us rise to the top.

Do it like most clubs in the world do it. Do what Everton's doing right now.
If History dominated football we'd have ****ed up leagues. It's a every team's heart that makes football leagues what they are, exciting.

Man U has been missing that heart for a long time now.

It's like if Real Madrid bought terrible players, and I said omg, I think Real Madrid is definitely as good as Man U. See, one can't do that. First step for me would be to admit I have a **** squad. Second would be to admit that we have heart, and that's what will help us rise to the top.

First of all.........what makes you think that United have a rubbish squad? Just because they are (finally, after all these years) third in the league at New Years time?

If you remember, this same squad has clawed back from being written off many times (yes, the old guard may be ageing but they are still some of the best footballers in the world).

They have got themselves back into some kind of contention with being just 9 points adrift from being something like 14 points adrift just two months ago.

They have wrecked the confidence and exposed the one-dimensional game-plan of the "bestest ever team in the world ever!!!" Arsenal, which led them to drop a bucketload of points.

Its a team built on, in addition to football skills, hard-work and passion.
How many squads can you point out with similar attributes?

Even the Milan team only has Gattuso and Costacurta who are always ready for a scrappy game, if needed. Even the great Maldini relies more on skill than hard-work.

Barca? Don't even mention them. For a club who is seriously in debt, they act like they can buy all the players in the world. Their fans are so stupid, even when they knew they were dangerously in debt, voted for a fellow to be made Prseident who made promises about signing the most expensive players in the world for Barca.

Sir Alex Ferguson would never have a player playing in his squad who isn't fully committed to playing for the team.
While Ronaldinho and Deco stand about scratching their nuts when the opposing team is on a counter attack, Rooney, Smith and Ruud track back all the way to help out their defence.

That is what a fan likes to see. Not expensive buys. But players who play like they care.

And in a fan's eyes that squad is much more capable of winning something for the club than a bunch of overpaid superstars.

That is why we are so confident that United will not be easy for Milan to play against.

I hope that satisfies your curiosity as to why Manchester United fans like and believe in their team so much.

By the way, decent performance against Boro today.
We've changed our playing style much after McLaren left. His knowledge of our secrets cannot hurt us now :D

Keano, Rio and Giggsy had a super game.
Heinze was a hurricane that blew everybody away.

A bit disappointed about Chelsea scraping past Liverpool with all three points.

I DON'T think Milan has a rubbish squad; you purposely overlooked my post, didn't you?

Dinho I can accept, he's a nut scratcher, but every other player drops back to help on Def., including Deco and Eto'o. There are other reasons (strategic) for which Dinho can stay up as much as he wants, but we're way beyond my original point and I'm tired of this argument.

Overpaid Superstars? THE BEST overpaid superstars!
With the exception of Larsson.

Laporta has done an great job getting rid of the debt Barcelona had, WHILE being able to change the sorry a$$ team Barcelona started with. And I'll never EVER forget Laporta's first signing, Rafael Marquez (what's that about overpaid superstars??? :D). And don't you dare talk bad about Rafa, or I'll shred you to pieces.

And I'm tired of arguing with you, I see you've got a decent idea of what you're talking about, I want to probe the rest of the Mancs who can't accept that Milan is better :D :D . And even you might not think so, but I see it crystal clear: Milan is better than Manchester United.

Scousers: People on Merseyside are called Scousers (derived from some kind of a "delicacy??" from that area, Lobscouse). They need not necessarily support Liverpool FC.
Its like people fom Manchester being called Mancunians. No, wait. The equivalent for that would be Liverpudlians.
Anyway, Scouser is not supposed to be a derogatory term.

Bin-dippers: Well, I don't know if it is true, but the city of Liverpool has the reputation of housing a large number of poor/not so well-to-do/involved in shady businesses/unemployed Scousers.
I agree it is a bit unfair to call them the bin-dippers, but the football team from Liverpool FC does deserve that title, if only for proclaiming that they are "BACK" every season, and having to make do with trophies like the league cup, or their "Infamous Treble" that makes United's Treble look like a massive underachievement.
i.e. they are willing to rummage through the metaphorical bins of football in their search for glory.

You may see it "crystal clear" but i doubt the players and management in Milan see it as clearly as you. Utd may be 3rd (not 4th !!!) but are the form side in the league (as backed up by both opinion and stats), are unbeaten since October and are steadily gaining momentum :D with the exception of the Fulham game (where they equalised with a last minute 35 yard wonder strike) Utd have won every game since early November

Wow... you're making some VERY raw assumptions here, and you're not thinking it through, either. I've been accused this before, and I simply won't put up with being called a glory hunter. First of all, Argo is from Indonesia and you are from Latvia or something (I forget), so you two WEREN'T glory hunters when you decided to supprt two of the most successful clubs in the world? I'm sure you did it knowing they'd win a lot in the future.

As for me, I've always hated Real Madrid and Manchester United, even before I started watching European football. And when I DID start watching European football, I decided to stick with my favorite Nationalitiy, the italians. I'll tell you I was VERY close to siding with Nedved and Zambrotta, until Maldini, Shevchenko, Pirlo, Nesta, Inzaghi and Rivaldo made me change my mind. It just happened that the best team at that time was Italian, cuz I'd always been a fan of the italian national team and club teams.

Barcelona I liked cuz they weren't Real Madrid, they had Saviola and Riquelme and they had some good dutchies. But I'd never forget Laporta's first signing, that signing made me love them forever.

And Arsenal, Because of Henry, and because I needed to support a team that wasn't Manchester United, a team that could beat Manchester United rather.

Anyways, my point... I supported Barcelona when they were dwelling low in the table, as for Arsenal, Manchester United was definitely the better team by that time. So it ISN'T weird that I support the best teams right now, it's mostly coincidence. Now if you'll allow me to clean of these stains, I'll gladly do it...

City have a (small) chance tonight as Arsenal are without Campbell. Anelka and Wright-Phillips both have reasons to put in good performances against the gooners. With a bit of luck they might pull off a shock..

As for Utd, this is probably the wrong time to face Spurs as they are playing as well as they have in years. Hopefully they will stick to their instinct for attacking football and leave a few gaps for our midfielders to exploit

Manchester United have always played attacking, attractive and entertaining football. Even during their worst years, they never strayed from the path.

Even when Liverpool were winning everything in sight, they were playing dull, defensive, possession passing football and scoring from the big fellow/little fellow combination using long balls.
Even during those dark days, United had the biggest attendances at their ground. They have been, for a long time, the best supported club in England, and now the world.

United provide football entertainment.

United teams have always had some of the finest wingers. Perhaps the best players to show off a side's attacking intent.
Right from Best, Coppell, Hill, Sharpe, Kanchelskis to Ryan Giggs and now Christiano Ronaldo.

To sum it up, Hector Cuper will never be allowed to even apply for a manager's job at Old Trafford. :)

Perhaps. But then those fans are fickle, and go away as soon as the team starts losing a few matches, sayin things like the team is past it and all. But the fans who actually support the club stick with them, definitely in good times, but especially in the bad.

Maybe since Italian football gives much more prominence to defensive play, Italian fans don't mind a super-defensive minded team like Juve.

We also lost Giggsy to injury yesterday (which is feared to be long-term) and Scholesy looked :dazed: in the second half(due to the Christmas programme). So basically, we had lost creativity. Ronaldo and Fletch still leave a lot to be desired in that area.

Well I didn't see too much defensive work from Mendes, so it's kinda funny you'd compare him to a DM, a natural CB...

we seem to have changed slightly towards them though, the teams of the 90s would start at a high tempo and try and get an early goal, now we start as if were building up to something but so often fizzle out. We used to get 5 or 6 goals maybe half a dozen times a season

Giggsy should be a fortnight according to Fergie, so he could be back flying by the Milan game :D Scholes definately needs a rest and this FA Cup game is the perfect time to do it.

The teams of the 90s had a crazy self-belief, the kind I have never seen in any other teams. They always believed that they would win, no matter what. I just don't see the same kind of belief now. Of course, Keano, Giggsy, Nevilles et al, believe that but no longer have the legs to make sure that the result reflects their belief.

Now if we don't score in the first half, it is a worrying situation for us.

Maybe we are moving in the right direction with our new arrivals, but whether they can be moulded into one of those teams remains to be seen.

True, it frustrates the hell out of me to see us do these ponderous European style build ups against teams with 2 set defensive lines  The old team would often start slowly but by about 15mins into the game were at full tempo and would keep at it until the end of the first half, by which time we were often 1 or 2 up. We have enough attacking players to do this still and hopefully Rooney and Ronaldo will learn there new roles.

Rooney certainly seems to enjoy the freedom he is given but as he has only been playing in the first team for a few months it seems he is still learning about his teammates. The constantly changing strikeforce isnt helping here but not much can be done to avoid these injuries....If we get everyone fit and consistantly in the side im sure he will really blossom for us.

Ronaldo is slightly more worrying as he has been with us for 18 months or so. He is still young and his potential is undeniable but he has to learn that football is a team game...

I also read that Ruud should definitely(i.e. Man Utd are confident) be back for the Champions League ties.

seems that way  I think Fergie will continue bluffing and double bluffing about Ruuds fitness right up until the kick off :D

Hopefully.........
Ronaldo is heading on the Denilson path by the way, too many tricks. Since he hasn't developed his passing game yet, I think it would be better to stick Fletch or Rooney(now that he is back) on the right and bench Ronaldo. I mean, its not like he has been a serious threat; and for a long time now. We could use him in games against sides that are particularly in bad form.

If we get everyone fit and consistantly in the side im sure he (Rooney) will really blossom for us.

I think Rooney will. He has been getting into goal-scoring positions, even when he has been playing on the wing or deep behind the main striker, which is the primary job of a striker.

Ronaldo has been disappointing. Defenders double up on him nowadays, and he can't do anything about it because he dwells on the ball for too long. So either he is fouled or dispossessed. Things for him to sort out on the training ground.

It won't be anything new to Carletto though. All Italian managers do that. Remember the pasta comment? :D

its well worth considering. Fletcher has been brought up the Utd way and he slots into the first team well. If he gets stronger (which he should as he is still young) then he could be a fantastic midfielder for Utd. Rooney hasnt been at Utd long but he has shown he is ready to work for the team, which when added to his talent makes him well worth his place.

It does seem that way :(

I remember doing training as a kid and the manager would pause the game after every bad decision and ask the player at fault "why did you do that? " if they did the same with Ronaldo a 90 minute match would probably last a few days

Also, it was good to see one of our old boys destroy Barcelona last weekend :dielaugh: Diego Forlan scored 2 in a 3 - 0 win, putting him 3rd beihnd Etoo and Ronaldo on the scorers list

I did like Forlan, he wasnt a Premiership player but he always tried hard for us, and those 2 goals against Liverpool were priceless :D

He has admitted though that he hasn't been playing very well of late and is trying on the training pitch to get his game right. I don't think too many continenetal players would have done that. So maybe his mental maturity at least is heading in the right direction. :D

:wow: Third in the scorers' list??

That is nice to hear. Yes, I liked him too when he was at Old Trafford. He always tried and kept running, we never heard him moan.

In addition to those goals against the Scouse, :D there was the late goal against Chelsea too. Created by Veron  and scored by Forlan. A real collector's item that. :D
And the time when he couldn't get his shirt on, but still made a good tackle and won the ball.
Yes, its good to see that things are going well for him. Can't say that about too many players after they left Old Trafford. Except for Karel Poborsky and this season, Jaap Stam.

Sounds promising :D

I've heard that in training he is massively improved in terms of vision and team play. Its only when he plays in front of large crowds that he starts doing unneccesary tricks, i suppose he suffers from "performing seal syndrome" if that is the case then as times passes and he becomes used to the environment he should improve

Liverpool vs. Man. United PLC should be a very good game. Morientes in his debut should spur the Pool side but the absence of Alonso will define the match. If Pool can cover his absence through Hamann or someone else stepping up to have a great game then it could go Pool's way or else United will fight out a win but only just.

Morientes might do well, in the unlikely event that Baros passes to him :D

Hopefully Fergie will play a physical game as Liverpools attacking players (with the exception of Gerrard) cant cope in those conditions. It worked for at Old Trafford and it worked for Watford, who despite their obvious limitations managed to cause Liverpool plenty of problems through commitment alone :D

because juve and inter are italian and in CL that would mean:

1) it improves the image of italian football
2) It improves the italian rating in CL
3) It makes italy have a better record and be better then other countries. id rather have italy be the best in europe than anyone else. 1 team cant make the whole country good no matter how good it is :rone:

The only other team I could possible stand to see win anything is Newcastle United . . . . why because they wore the black and white stripes before those duesche bags at Juve did, and Newcastle beer isn't that bad in fact it is pretty good, F Manchester United, F Arsenal, and F Chelsea . . . . Roger Waters, and the Beatles were fans of Liverpool so I don't have any feelings about them.

One question where did these feelings for two teams come from . . . . how can you like a great team like Milan . . . . but then root for Manchester United? F'ING PICK ONE OR THE OTHER!

That is my opinion and that is how it is done in Philadelphia we like our teams and we hate everyone else . . . except if a team is playing the Dallas Cowboys, NY Giants, DC Redskins in football, and NY Rangers, NJ Devils in hockey and NY Yankees in baseball
