View Full Version : Fiorentina vc Ac milan (Game comment)
Milan travel to the Stadio Artemio Franchi looking for their ninth consecutive League win, but they will have to stop in-form Fiorentina striker Luca Toni in the process. Milan, two points behind leaders Juventus, will approach the match with no shortage of confidence having defeated the front-runners in Week 10 and mauled Udinese 5-1 in Week 11.
Fiorentina will prove a serious test for Ancelotti’s men. The Viola have won their last four games, beating Ascoli 2-0 in Week 11, and in Toni possess the most prolific striker in Europe. Toni, allegedly a target for Bayern Munich, scored for the Azzurri against Holland last weekend and Milan will have to be at their best to stop the giant marksman adding to his staggering tally of 13 Serie A goals this season.
The hosts have a painful history against Milan. It was at the hands of the Rossoneri that Fiorentina suffered their record home defeat in 1992, losing 7-3. The Viola fared little better last season and will be eager to avenge their 6-0 and 2-1 defeats.
After a fairytale start to the season, the next three weeks will be a true test of Fiorentina’s progress as Cesare Prandelli’s men must face Milan, Roma and Juventus. The Fiorentina Coach will be able to call on a strong side for the challenge. Guilherme Do Prado, Christian Maggio and Alessandro Gamberini are still sidelined, but Marco Donadel returns from suspension to face his former club and there are no new injuries.
Carlo Ancelotti receives a boost with the news that Andriy Shevchenko is available for his first game since the Week 8 clash with Palermo. He will most likely link up with Alberto Gilardino who will be looking to put one over his ex-boss at Parma. Only Cafu is unavailable after international duty. Given the embarrassment of striking riches, Christian Vieri may find himself in the stands once more.
Fiorentina (probable): Frey; Ujfalusi, Di Loreto, Dainelli; Pasqual, Brocchi, Donadel, Fiore, Montolivo, Jorgensen; Toni
Milan (probable): Dida; Stam, Maldini, Nesta; Serginho, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Kakà; Gilardino, Shevchenko

In a match as high-profile (2nd n 3rd place) as these, we do not have the luxury for Vieri to keep missing the pots. Hence pairing Shev n Gila is the best option up front. The rest of the line up is quite standard, a 90% sure-win formation :D . Lets hope there is no "however" cases.

Cafu misses the game?? Again???

Think Cafu has a knock.....
For this game, I think that if we can maintain our level of intensity and concentration at the levels where they were for Juve and Udinese, then no team on earth is our equal, and another thrashing is in store for Fiorentina.
Confidence for me, therefore is at an all time high, but again, this is definatively subject to the starting line up fielded by Carlito, and obviously, the resulting performance of the individuals, and the team as a whole.
The Viola are a strong team, no doubt about that, and will be anxious for revenge for the previous season´s tennis score in the San Siro. That being said, they can be defeated.
I expect Serghino to start, along with Kaka, Sheva, Gila, Gattuso, Seedorf, Pirlo, Nesta, San Paolo, Stam and of course the Brazilian wall, Dida. I look for attacks up the left flank, with Stam forming a defensive 3 man back line, when il concorde makes his sonic boom creating runs up the wing.
The international break will have served to offer rest for San Paolo, Seedorf, Rui Costa, and others who no longer feature for their national teams, so we can field a team that has important members rested, and roaring and ready to go. I sincerely hope that Rui is given a run in this game, and I think this is something that Carlo may very well do, depending of course on how the match is turning out for us.
We should win this match, and with Juve playing away to Roma, this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of a possible slip up by the Zebras.
A loss by them, and a victory for us, gives us a morale boosting one point lead in the standings, something that will surely bring some well deserved gloom to Turin.
No predictions, other than a comprehensive victory, and one I hope, will further demonstrate that Milan, is the best football team in the Universe.
FORZA MILAN!!!
As I had said at the beginning of the season... Fiorentina is the team to watch as how they play against Milan, Juve and Inter, it will determine who wins the scudetto. I still dub them the King Maker of the scudetto. Let's hope we arent the casualty in this game. At this moment I will have to respect Fiorentina as a legitimate contender for the title too. I think Inter will have to wait next century again.

I think that Fiorentina are given a bit too much respect and attention by media and fans than they deserve. Don't get me wrong I am far from saying that we shouldn't take them seriously but it seems to me that they install a bit too much respect, not to say fear, among fans and such.
Let's face it they have 3-4 very good players but that's about it. So far they have had only one serious test vs Inter and Inter dominated them all over the field and made that game look like Milan vs Udinese. Well, I guess with players like Brocchi in your starting 11 you could expect to beat Ascoli, Lecce, etc but even an out of form team like Inter would prove just too good for you.
Of course they still have a chance of stealing points from us but mostly due to two reasons, IMO:
1) the support oftheir home crowd will give them wings and they could outdo themselves but above all
2) we have a very, very important CL game in the middle of the week, so Milan players might not be completely focused on this one

Fiore will demand concentration, this is the key on this match... Seedorf sometimes in the past has lacked this but right now he just knows that this is not the team for a dropoff...although very impressive if in-form and fired up, becomes a natural leader that inspires while raising other's stamina... but definetly the King of stamina is Rino and this is the characteristic I like him most... beyond his technical shortfalls he's the one that allows Pirlo a flaring game... giving him some extra space so he makes the right decisions... But Fiore will try to go straight to this one our jugular... Rino is the one to interrup that into happening... how??? first of all we must never play their game... whenever we find ourselves playing against their characterisc rythm, pace, etc... furiously but still compacted and choreographed cut them right there.. do never go into defending everyone desperatly by themselves they'd crack our minds.. instead we need to establish our rythm imposing our own domination early on, and whenever they try to break our defense start with an overlapping defense from way back under Rino's command... Pirlo focused and absorbing power from the defensive fiery of Gattusso while receiving creative support and attacking attitude from Seedorf... if this Mid sticks to plan... Then the magic of GILA-SHEVA will crush any hopes Fiore had... a now flying but very soon a free-dive crashing per una Viola che vola...

I think the one who's gonna be more inspiring for this game than any our other guys... is gonna be SHEVA... I believe he's the most eager to do something special in this match... cuz he's lost most of these recent spectacular displays of performance... where we have had looot of fuuunnn and he wants to keep that going more than anyone else... I hope and truly feel he's going to surprise us tomorrow...
Watch out this is not a game for Vieri ok?!... just a little bit of Pippo in case!... Sheva wants to impress us (if teamwork allows him) and Gila is totally fired up and ready to take Capocannonieri from Toni... Pippo is playing spectacularly, not a hint of egoism, setting up others right when needed but we must better take special care for him... ;)
And our defense!... Didn't we stop the Zibra?... and his combo?... isn't Maldini and Nesta the top of the class?... but... but... but Stam???... don't worry he's got the DEVIL inside... :dumpf: And what about our Milan's private Concord?!... HE is so on fire that I hope he doesn't explote on takeoff... like it happened to the last one ;)... but if it happens, instead try to dive, crash and explote on Fiore...:5ok:

Ancelotti confident in Florence

Carlo Ancelotti has analysed Fiorentina’s new structure, but warns that Milan want to recapture the top of the table.
“The Viola are the surprise side of the tournament so far and will play with real enthusiasm,” explained Ancelotti ahead of Sunday’s showdown at the Stadio Franchi.
“They have changed radically from last season with a new Coach and players. I think this will be a very important match for them, not only as a challenge for second place, but also to see how they measure up to Milan.”
Only three points separate these teams and both are on winning streaks – four on the trot for Fiorentina, eight for Milan – so something has to give on Sunday afternoon. It’s believed Cesare Prandelli will change his tactics for this tie, leaving Luca Toni upfront as sole striker supported by Martin Jorgensen and Riccardo Montolivo.
“Fiorentina have a very linear squad structure,” insisted Ancelotti. “They rely heavily on Toni’s quality, have a solid defence and midfield with attacking wingers. It’s a classic 4-4-2. Toni is having the kind of form at the moment where everything he touches turns to gold and I can see Montolivo coming in to give them extra midfield support.”
The Rossoneri realise they are torn between winning this crunch match in the Scudetto race and preparing for their crucial Champions League trip to Fenerbahce on Wednesday.
“The squad is doing well both physically and psychologically, so we want to continue our winning streak. The fact that Juventus face a difficult test at Roma and could slip up, allowing us to recapture the top of the table, is an important motivation.”
Ancelotti also hit back at Billy Costacurta, who suggested this week that players inevitably stop listening to their Coach after four or five years.
“It is true that a tactician must be creative to keep his side motivated, but the players need to work at it as well. We have to live this sport on a daily basis and I can assure you that the squad is on my wavelength.”
Andriy Shevchenko, Christian Vieri and Marcos Cafu are in the squad travelling to Florence, but Swiss international Johan Vogel remains at home.
Milan squad: Dida, Fiori, Kalac; Cafu, Jankulovski, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Simic, Stam; Gattuso, Kaka, Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf, Serginho; Inzaghi, Gilardino, Shevchenko

There's a real dilemma here... Fiorentina will demand all from us as well as the next CL turkish side will... The thing is not much about the result today (;)) as it is on the quality and progression of our own trademark style...
On this game in particular we should not lose concentration or slack even for a nanosecond, do not think on anything else (not even CL) except to cut Fiore as soon as possible while remaining a coherent and cohesive overlapping defense... this teamwork holds the real key... we gain more group concentration while defending because we usually have more ideas on how to protect ourselves as a cohesive work unit... then we must translate that gained concentration and emboldment into encasing them with our incesant attacks... the thing is to never enter into panic mode, if they happen to ocasionally tear our defense appart do not panic... we must gain posture and concentration defending as a teamwork!!!... and from there start to impose our rythm with the finality to exhaust them with relentless attacks... and if it happens that we allow then some rythm is only to give oxygen and space to the whole game but regroup and start back again in front of Dida...
In reality this is the trademark style Milan it's trying to improve on... continuation to nurture this quality to finally ingrain it in our squad through good performances is more important to concentrate on implementing, than to desperately and irracionally going for a bulked result!!!... Calm, patience and a lot of defending to settle down the playing field... then lot of goals will naturally flow our way... and a hell of a warning shout to these misbehaving Turks!!! :firedev: :5dito: :yuck:

MILAN DRAW LEVEL!!! Serginho crosses the ball from the left and Gilardino loses his markers to move across and glance the ball past a helpless Frey. 1-1, a great start to the game.

we are doing well, gilardino looks good , so does seedorf. Serginho is running down the flank and that is where most of the game is going on. Viola looks dangerous from counter attacks, we need to score soon in the second half so we can relax and just finish the game off. Sheva doesnt look so good, pirlo also. Nesta plays brilliantly, but our defence on fiorentina goal was HORRIBLE!! SIMPLY HORRIBLE!!! now....lets score another one.... more crosses needed from free spaces, its hard through the middle.

The goal for Viola came after a free kick from the right, the ball went over the diffence and Toni, of all people left uncovered, jumped out behind our defence to leave little chance for Dida with a precise, low header in the opposite corner.
Seedorf had a 35m screemer go very close to Frei's goal with the keeper completely stationary - great shot by the Dutchman.
Gila scored our goal by slightly touching a Serginho cross that was so well placed that Gila couldn't have missed even if he wanted to.

bad defensive error by Nesta, I think, who couldn't clear a simple ball and it slipped into the feet of Jorgensen. 2-1 Viola in the very first attack of the 2nd half. Our minds are definitely not onto this game - lack of concentration cost us 2 goals so far and we are behind.

when the team plays like that with or without Janku it's all the same. I guess the plan was to do our best in the 1st half and then lay back and defend for the second. Winning today was not on the agenda.
Gila scored a goal but it was disallowed for him pulling the defender - pretty dubious, IMO. I doubt this would have been disallowed if it was Juve :rollani:
We robbed ourselves from the sounds of it
Fiorentina-Milan 85' The Milan players are furious...Gilardino pushed his marker out of the way and headed the ball home from Costa's flighted cross. Good decision from the officials and Costa is quite rightly booked for his argueing.
Fiorentina-Milan 86' Rare corner for Fiorentina...TONI with his 15th goal of the season. Maldini's clearance wasn't good enough and as the ball is headed back into the box Toni pounces to nod the ball home before Dida can get ot it. 3-1 Fiorentina and that's surely game over now!
game (almost) over. ah, no luck today :\

Sorry to be so prophetic about this. Like I said... the team to watch this year is Fiorentina. No doubt they just put a dent in our title success. Now we have to even hope to go through to the Knockout stage of the CL. And lastly give some credit to Fiorentina. The turn-around from last year has been astonishing. So we took a hit in the standing table and now are even with the Viola on points at 28 and also pretty darn even on goal differential. Actually I think it is exact. Then we bring the sh!thead cousins of ours back in the race.
Cafu injured, and Nesta lucky not to concede a penalty!!
Fiorentina-Milan 90'+4 Cafu is holding his groin, he's in real trouble. That will be a massive blow for Milan if their influential right-back is lost to injury at this stage of teh season.
Fiorentina-Milan 90'+2 Pasquala again gives the Milan defence nightmares with another great delivery...Nesta handles the ball surely that's a penalty!!!! NO the ref's lost his glasses and waved play on.
was there an offside with the third goal for Viola?
So we took a hit in the standing table and now are even with the Viola on points at 28 and also pretty darn even on goal differential. Actually I think it is exact.
We are ahead by 1.
The scudetto is now out of our hands though.

Prandelli had us sussed before the game even started. Everyone knows that this Milan side holds the ball up for long periods of the game, but there are times where we allow the other team far too many shots on goal. Honestly, I am sick of seeing Dida make diving saves from long distance shots that shouldnt even be allowed to be taken. When was the last time he had to to nothing. well put but I also think that we lost today simply because winning was not our goal for this game. It was obvious that the players were simply absent from today's game - no concentration, not desire to win, not even a trace of alertness, just follow the flow of the game and whatever happens.
There is so much to be played for in the Serie A ... it's just too early. As for the CL, it's all gonna be decided in the next two games and that's where our head were today, not in Florence.
Viola are a good side but that's about it, they can't measure up to Inter or Juve, let alone Milan. Today, we would have lost to most teams in Serie A, even to the Udinese we saw at SS 2 weeks ago.

our defence is ok, our midfield plays like little girls!!! Pirlo, kaka CANT DEFEND!!!! Other teams are shooting at our goal whenever they want, there is no pressing at all! Im so mad i cant even write about this tipe of football. SLOOOOW passing, poor crossing, or no crossing at all. Everything goes through the middle, Carlo has no admiration from players, no power in his tactics, no concrete actions worked on in training. Nothing! every goal we score is just a brilliant move from our genious players like kaka, sheva, serginho, gila,. No simple goals at all! WHAT ARE WE DOING AT TRAINING?? pirlo needs 5min to pass the ball, seedorf was ok in the first half, horrible in the second! Costacurta was 100% right, Carlo has no real respect ( fear-respect ), and that means no real discipline in our game, It clear. Why isn't Jankulovski playing at all? Last time I saw him play he was damn great. Things arn't really going great for Milan at the moment but the team needs to hold on tight. I think Costacurta's comments shouldn't have been said to the media even though what he said is somewhat true. I think this has created tension in the locker room. Also I think Stam will leave at the end of this season as well as Ancelloti (depending on his CL performance) We are in real need of a RB at the moment. I'd be damn happy if we land Hitzfield and Ballack in the summer.

I hate them a lot... but I admire CAPELLO A LOT TOO!!!
Capello is great, but tends to make mistakes in key matches. Especially against milan.
Let's not forget that Juve will play Fiorentina in 2 weeks and we'll see what they will do there, however I think that Juve could have drawn a game like this while we lost. The differnece between us is that they close a match in 15 minutes while we don't... we help them to get in the match again. The 1st goal was a disgrace, how can you leave Toni alone????
the situation in the first fiorentina goal shoves how " well " organized and tacticaly prepared our defence is.... and about apello's picture...that is how realcoach must act in maches! just like that!

Seconded.
What we kind of lack this season is playing like we played Juve few weeks ago,i.e. don`t waste any chances, scoring early, keep the match under control, and defend if there`s nothing else left to do.I know it`s tough and that our players are under huge pressure, not to mention how difficult it is to play Viola at home, but if we could beat them last season twice,i see no reason why we couldn`t have done it this time as well,it would be too much to say that it`s only because they have got Toni and we don`t,since we are a far more `complete` and skillful team(and we`ve got Sheva,Gila,Kaka` and Pippo in the same team!).I think that in the first half we dominated even though it was so silly to let Toni score like that, and what happened in the second half i just can`t explain.I really hope this won`t affect our performance in Istanbul and that we will soon be back as our old selves.
Forza Milan!
Gila scored a regular goal at 2-1, but unfortunately the goal was not convalidated because the linesman "saw" a foul. I'm sure that if there was a juve player in place of Gila the goal would be good.
carlo says we played well.... what more can I say.... if he thinks we did well, we can always play like this and simple take place no.2 and be relaxed. This sucks tottaly, why cant he just once say : " we played badly, we need improvement, i did something wrong....".

Our problem is complacency always happens... and we are much better after we lose so we stop feeling like rock stars for a sec and mind the reality of the situation we're in... if we took a deficit in playing this way to somehow capitalize next Wed in Turkia... then we should play them exactly as we played JUVE!... I agree, in the second half we totally sucked from organizational and motivational point of view. IMO we had our minds on Istanbul and played this game just because we had to, just went through the motions.
Still, I believe we could have stolen away a draw with that disallowed Gila effort 5 min from end. It was a very dubious situation as the ref didn't signal for anything but the linesman, who was much farther away than the ref, "saw" a foul on Di Loreto. I can't say 100% that Gila didn't do anything wrong but I am even farther from believeing that the goal was correctly disallowed. One thing I am absolutely sure though - it that was Juve playing the Viola, the goal would have stood.
Anyway, we have a much more important game to play and I am sure we will see a very, very different Milan on Wednesday. The Serie A is still way too young, far from the decisive stages, unlike the CL.

Today was a terribly played game by Milan. No intensity, none of the fire we showed against Juve and Udinese, like against PSV. Our midfield was non existant when Fiorentina was counterattacking. Our defence was snoozing on the goals. Please explain to me how Toni could be left so wide open on a free kick? It was simply embarrassing. On the second goal we totally lost focus and pretty well let Fiorentina come at us. All that was needed was a simple clearance. Pirlo and Nesta both slipped when they had the chance to clear it. The final goal was the same story failing to clear on a set piece. It's a recurring theme now. It seems as if we don't know how to deal with the ball when it comes in off free kicks and corners.
Gilardino played well. He hardly touched the ball on the way in but it was good to get away from his mark. IMHO there was no foul on his second goal he did well to put it away. We also had a pretty clear penalty denied as Brocchi blocked the ball with his arm in front of the goal.
Shevchenko was a non-factor for most of the game. He did however contribute with a shot that went over by a little bit. Also him and Gila worked a great one two at the top of the box but he put his shot wide with Ujfalusi bothering him. Kaka' was much to selfish and always looking for fouls instead of making the simple pass. Not one of his best performances for Milan.
If Milan don't go to Istanbul with more intensity and look for a win I am sad to say that this season could well be over soon.
u guys should stop complaining... carlo shouldnt be hanged... it was obvious we didnt lose because we were tactically outpowered... the players didnt seem to want to move, what should carlo give them steroids?!? they were lazy... blame them and not carlo, carlo cant force them to play perfect passes during the game, he can teach them during training on how to improve on it and obviously we perfected it from the previous games weve seen, the players just couldnt pass the ball right, we seemed out of determination, and theres nothing to do but look to work harder next match.

The defender dont defend well but our stricker play well. And the important things is now a win in Turkey. the season is still long way.We still have hope even it might be slim with Juve strong with 5 point lead.See in EPL where chelsea also can also lose and draw to lower class team. This might happen to Juve as well. The important thing is to recover the winning mental for champion league......ForZa MiLan

Many people here are so pessimistic, but I don't really understand why to be honest. We won 8 games in a row, and ok...now we lost against Fiorentina. But I think losing against the Viola is not a shame! This team is really strong!
Now we have 28 points out of 36! This is really not bad at all! And we don't have to look to Juve, Milan only needs to concentrate on their own games! And if Juve keeps winning, well, then they really deserve to be the champion of Italy! We must be honest with that!
But I think that also Juve will have a bad moment during this season. After all there is still a long way to go!

we did not play that bad, gila and sheva partnership is looking more interesting every time they play.. sheva wasnt good today but he had one good shot.. i think the main reason we lost today was not because of the referee.. true that linesman didnt see a handball as brocchi's and saw a very wierd foul that is much harder to see.. but still, we are the ones to blame for letting them go ahead twice..
Nesta should not be blamed because it is the best game he played the season, he was marvellous, he did make a mistake for their 2nd goal and made a penalty that was also waved off at the end, but still he was great..
the main reason i believe was Ancelotti, his formation was not good, he was talking about using the rotation system and all that to rest his players and in particular in this month because they have 9 games in 27 days, and still keeps using the same starting eleven! I mean, we could have at least seen Jankulovski at some point in the game, but he put Rui Costa for Seedorf??? I was like wtf??? And Pirlo was dead-tired, Rui should have taken his place not Seedorfs..
And his substitutions were all not good, especially the one for changing the formation to a 4-3-3.. i mean, we have never tried this except once before, and it was vs PSV, and we lost.. this summer all we did was try the 3 man defence to use it more often and we still didnt use it once.. today, it was Ancelotti's fault..
i hope he will select a better, FRESH, team for Istanbul... Pirlo is always influential in big games, but I dont know why, I feel we might - and should - see Vogel. I really hope we do not see Vieri vs Istanbul, it will be just like throwing the Champions league trophy in the trash..

Yes, as I have mentioned earlier Fiorentina played better today but I am not surprised. Minor blips like this one happen to every team. I mean look at Chelsea, they lost to Betis...Plus, Fiorentina has been remarkably good lately, so I think they deserve some credirt as well. It's not only because we didn't play good, but also because we were facing a VERY GOOD OPPONENT.In English I have a lot of respect for Fiorentina.
Now all we have to do is move on and start focusing onto the Fenerbahce game, since there is no tolerance for any points dropped at this point...
P.S. I wish Haroon had been around, he could have given us good ratings for every single player :)
There have been a mixed feeling about the game vs The Viola and I can respect both sides of perspective.
What brings a little ire from me is the few that are asking the coach to go. I say careful for what you hope for because to ask him to go is to hope that Milan do not to bad, but to do absolutely horrible. A little d@mn respect from some of you by at least understanding the difficulties in coaching a big team like ours, isnt asking for much. Would you be hoping that Milan takes an early exit out of the CL??? Would you be hoping for Milan to finish not in the top 4 places but mid table??? Would you be hoping for us to sink into the darkness of mediocrity??? This is what it takes for some of you guys to get what you want and have Coach Carlo go. THIS Milan Fan isnt willing to have it that way. Besides those who have asked for his head on a platter have yet to think of a possible and even more so realistic subsitute for him if he should go. So if you think this loss vs Fiorentina was bad, let just wait to see what will happen by mid season so that some of you brats get what you want... that is.... sack Carlo. Hopefully then you few have been weened of the baby pacifier.
Fvckin result... so disappionting so undeserved... referee was a tragedy. If not his mistakes we would have won... especially when Brocchi saved goal with a hand. It was horrible mistake. We have lost our eagerness when such things happened for some time... our guys lost faith that they can change anything in that game... we created so much in first half and we even managed to equalize but first minute of second half crossed our hopes... but then guys didnot surrender... they faught... but ref was main person last night.
But we have to admit that all three goals were caused by our defenders - San Paolo, Sandro and Sergi. Sad but true. If not these mistakes Toni would have stay dry that night.
What a shame :(

Fiorentina 3, Milan 1
Sunday November 11, 2005
5 points behind Juve, and 3rd in the league. This IMO, a possible result of imbecilic defending, the galactico disease spreading to Milan, Carlo really losing the plot, in another high pressure match, arrogance rearing its ugly head, or indeed as is more likely the case, the fatal combination of all four.
The Viola side that was dominated by Inter a few weeks ago was nowhere to be found in Florence on Sunday, as Milan allowed, via careless defending, 3 goals, and while managing to reply with an equalizer, at 1-1, failed to find the back of the net again in response to a resurgent Fiorentina´s two goals.
Satellite problems made me miss the first goal, but replays showed that our failure to maintain concentration on set plays was the genesis of that goal. Now if at this point in the season we are still incapable in defending these forms of attack, then we can really look forward to another “almost” season, like the one previous.
Our equalizer came from an excellent cross from Serghino, culminating in a glancing header from Gila. Sheva, showing that he really wasn’t match fit, then squandered two successive chances.
So, we went in tied at the half, but a late flurry of chances for the Rosseneri toward half time made me feel that we could turn things around in the second half. That is, until a turn over from a slightly below par Clarence not five minutes into said second half, culminated in a suicidal missed clearance from Nesta, which gifted Fiorentina their second.
Carlo loses the plot:
That second goal is what precipitated the changes that IMO contributed to us losing the game.
Rui Costa should not have replaced Seedorf. Seedorf should have stayed on the pitch, but Sheva should have come off for Rui, and as for Cafu to replace Stam, when Luca Toni was, especially during set plays, creating havoc in our penalty area, smacked either of arrogance, poor reading of the game, or the galactico disease.
Why arrogance? Carlo to me may have been a little arrogant in deciding that going to an all out attacking formation wouldn’t be punished, with a nice amount of time remaining on the clock.
Poor reading of the game? Luca Toni obviously needed someone to out-muscle him in the air, and not allow him space on the ground. And while Nesta and Maldini played well, Stam in the CB position would have firmed us up some more...
Galactico disease? Could it be that Maldini, and Sheva, are untouchables? Yes, Maldini is the captain, but hey, he can be sacrificed if need be….and IMO, he should have come off, allowing Stam into the CB role, and Cafu given his usual RB slot. Sheva was having an off day, and not being match fit, he was no where near his usual brilliant self, and while he is a player capable of turning a game in a heartbeat, I doubt that, even given 180 minutes, he would have done so in this particular game. Sheva should have been replaced by Rui Costa, with Kaka and Gila playing at the top, or even keeping Rui on the bench, and playing Pippo with Gila, Kaka remaining in his usual role, just behind the forward pairing.
But Pippo comes on for Kaka, and this for me signaled the beginning of the end. Kaka was (as most of our players were), a bit off form, but should have stayed on, as he was, at times looking dangerous.
My changes would have been as follows:
Sheva would have been the first replacement, putting on Pippo. Maldini would be the next change, being replaced by Stam in the middle, and Cafu on the pitch, in his ususal RB position.
Then, depending on what was going on, a third change, bringing on Rui for Pirlo.
Further to that, the long ball strategy that we seem to employ whenever Gilardino is playing only serves to give the opposition the ball that much more quickly. I would insist on one wing attacks, alternating between Cafu surging up one flank, and Serghino up the other, with instructions for one to play a CB role when his partner from the opposite flank took off on an overlap.
For the first time this season, with 15 minutes to go in a game, Milan looked defeated. The body language from coach to players said: “Ok, we lost this one; let’s get home to Milan as soon as possible, to prepare for a potential nightmare trip to Istanbul, and another high pressure game.
Carlo has demanded a public apology from Billy, which I think he deserves, given that he is the coach, and until Galliani or Berlu makes the announcement, he remains the coach, and Costacurta should either demand the management position, or apologize and then shut the #$%@ up! I wonder how much of Billy’s rant contributed to the mental state of the players, and Carlo´s hesitation to make changes I am more used to him making? We played with three strikers for crying out loud!
This loss should not be forgotten, but the tapes studied over and over, and the players practice set piece defending over and over, until they get it right. We are Milan for goodness sakes, not some run of the mill team whose players can’t concentrate for the few seconds it takes to take a free kick.
So the training regimen needs adjusting. Carlo needs to realize that there are no galacticos, and he is not yet in Madrid, so yes, he can take off Sheva and Maldini for technical reasons for the former and tactical reasons for the latter. He also needs to realize that he can change his strategy midway through a game, and not keep his pre-determined subs, irrespective of what is taking place on the pitch.
Now, more than ever, the knives are sharpening, and should he get us kicked out of Europe with another poor managerial 90minutes vs Fenerbache…we may well be in the January window looking for more than defensive cover…we may be looking for a new manager as well.
While this may be the knee-jerk reaction of Berlu and Co, as long as we still have a chance in the Serie A, I wouldn’t fire Carlo, but I sure as hell would be looking high and low for a replacement for the 06/07 season.
ya I bet Ancelotti must be arrogant again lol. 無聊.

Come on now Jeff...I know u arent reading my posts again! Sheesh, after all the back and forth we went through? And yes, Carlo was a little arrogant to field 3 strikers, and idiotic to keep Sheva on the pitch when his performance was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay below his usual norm.
Indeed, Milan3869, Sheva and Gila, when "clicking" are a huge threat, and I would love for their chemistry to get a good chance so "meshing".
While we didnt win the match, we had greater posession, yet, due to a combination of the factors in my previous post, and the refs decisions, (which I ignored), cost us the game.
However, in retrospect, I do think that the ref had a poor game, though honestly he could have given them a penalty for Nesta´s hand ball in the box.
Now its on to Istanbul, with a bad result haunting us.
And for those asking for a player by player review..it hurts too much for me to do this, sorry. :moan: :sigh:

mrki....listen bro, I understand your angst...I empathise with you 100%, but yet, I think that he doesnt deserve a sacking just now.
We are not Madrid, who sacks more coaches than the law should allow. We are Milan, and after a run of 8 wins, the time was ripe for a fall, especially when we have a do or die match in Istanbul in a few days time.
Carlo made some mistakes in Florence, but the team as a whole underperformed. How much of an influence did Billy "Verbal Diahorrea" Costacurta have on the mental state of the locker room? Did the international break just come at a bad time for us?
There are many reasons, including the ones in my first post, that could be to blame for this defeat, but, unless we bribe refs a la Juve, there will be a few more before the season is out...and I say, lets keep Carlo, until he proves he no longer can take us where we need to go...Silverware City!

Carlo is a young coach still in progression... this meaning that he'll become great and amass success if he keeps consistently improving... we can see how he's sometimes extraordinarily great and sometimes not so... to reach Capello's greatness Carlo just have to learn consistency... but he can, he's make Milan play at 115%... at full capacity plus the reserve... with spectacular beauty a class above Juve inclusive... so HE CAN!!!... there's just only one little detail and that is... consistency!!!...

I feel like some of you guys are being a little too harsh on Carlo. I mean come on, Nesta literally f***ed up at the 2nd Fiorentina goal, Maldini likewise at either the 1st or the 2nd. Plus Sheva took the day off and Gila's 2nd goal was ruled out by the ref. And this list goes on and on. I don't think it was all Carletto's fault. He might not be the best coach in the whole wide world but sacking our coach would end up in disastrous consequences for the team.
yes, i agree, it would be pretty bad to sack Carlo now, but i want him to leave at the end of the season, he is a young coach but he cant work on his skills by ruining milan's matches. he simply made too many just horrible tactics that every person that knows football can see. Motivation is also a big problem. Yes, refs did damage us, but that is the job of our managment, and aldough we could even win in Florence, we didnt play good. One thing worries me....Pirlo. He was awesome 1,5 year ago..... dribling, passing, fighting, marking, but to be fair - he is not any more. He needs to work harded, or something else, but we have pretty big problem at that position. On second Fio goal their player took a shot from 22-25 m, all alone! unmarked! and that happens all the time. Pirlo doesnt do his job properly, i love this guy playing for milan, but he sucks lately. He did play few great games, but few. Some are saying the internationals made us loose that game....seedorf,rui,sheva,pippo,serginho,maldini,stam were all at Milanello. Im really dissapointed. Im not saying we should sack Carlo now, no. Im just pointing out we do have some actually serious problems with our games and the refs, lets hope Berlusconi can do it all by himself, like things always are at Milanello.

Dont know the source, I got it via email from a friend, but it pretty much sums our position up:
The simple fact of Milan's defeat, or better yet Fiorentina's win, again does not portray correctly the afternoon's proceedings. After Alberto Gilardino equalised Fiorentina's opening goal by Luca Toni, Milan had the home side pinned in their own half until the interval, and it looked as though the combination of their superior ball playing skills and Fiorentina's notoriously suspect defence would tilt the balance in favour of the visitors, who were after all gunning for their ninth Serie A win in a row.
As in the game in Roma the previous evening, a goal close to half-time settled matters. Barely 35 seconds of the second-half had gone when Pasqual's less than perfect, knee high cross was sliced by Milan defender Alessandro Nesta to Martin Jorgensen on the far post, and the Dane placed it inside Dida's right hand post for Fiorentina's lead.
The rest of the game again saw the home side, who had decided to use top scorer Toni as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1, on the back foot with a limited amount of possession, but Milan could not break their resistance. In a last effort Filippo Inzaghi replaced Kaka, and Gilardino's disallowed goal 5 minutes from time may have been a controversial point of argument since, but his push on defender Di Loreto before heading home falls into the category of actions that may or may not be called for a foul and would generate controversy either way.
The result, which meant Fiorentina joined Milan in second place only a few months after avoiding relegation on the last day of last season, seems to have opened old wounds for Carlo Ancelotti's side. Despite improved offensive power, which has scored 27 goals in 12 matches, Milan keep having trouble defending set pieces, as proved by Toni's opening goal, for which he ghosted in on the weak side of Milan's backline. Serginho failed in his assignment to cover that area in the zone marking system employed by the Rossoneri, plus Nesta made a mistake for the second goal - although he may have been blinded by the strong setting sun.
Granted, a study of the endless string of goals Milan have conceded from free kicks and corner kicks showed midfielders and forwards were at fault more than defenders in covering spaces and opponents, but Milan's destiny is now tied more to their ability to overcome those frequent lapses than to their skills at playing opponents off the park, as they're perfectly capable of doing and, to some extent, did last Sunday.
Whether you count Fiorentina among the serious title contenders or not (their absence from the European scene means they can rest their thin squad during the week), Milan are still the number one chasers behind Juventus, but their chances of a relaxed few days before the Serie A resumes next weekend are nil.
In fact, the focus is now on Wednesday's crucial Champions League tie at Fenerbahce, where the Rossoneri will face a kaleidoscope of trouble. Swiss midfielder Johann Vogel has apparently been reminded by some of the perils of playing in Istanbul just one week after the World Cup playoffs fracas, Jaap Stam (suspended) and Cafu (injured) are missing and Maldini's weak knees will thus have to undergo another 90 minutes.
A result in Istanbul and a win against Schalke 04 a fortnight later would help avoid a disastrous first-round exit, but the clubs' need to stay alive in the Champions League and avoid losing more ground to Juve in the race for the Scudetto mean Milan are already going through a couple of weeks that may define their season.
Can we go to man marking then, as opposed to zonal marking? The zone thing seems to not be working.

PPL where do you think we lose our games?!... in formations?!... in the lack of in-form players?!...due to too old guys?!... by the power of pacey teams?!...on set pieces?!... at zone marking?!... on the Transfer policy?!... In the lack of proper training?!... lack of motivation?!... WHERE?!?!... can somebody tell me where?!?!... well... we lose the games IN OUR HEADS first and foremost... than in the actual physical and technical fight itself... we start thinking that we are gonna lose at some point and then we get all bottled up!!!... the pressure is extremely high and our psychology is tricky... and is a disease that can only be cured... WINNING!!!... there's no shrink in the world that could ever help us... we are the special case!!! ;)

we lose our games mostly on stupid defensive mistakes....also we tend to mess up on set pieces. either our defence dont communicate or nobody does their assignment!! toni's first goal was just awful....he was wide open....you think that someone with his presence and his ability to score would be heavily marked, by nesta or something. nobody saw him, and im finding hard to believe that they forgot about him!
we need to start playing better in set pieces and prevent those costly mistakes in defence!!
forza milan!!
