View Full Version : Libertadores 2006
Well Libertadores Cup is now on querter finals stage, there are 3 argentinian teams, 2 brazilian, and 1 from Ecuator, Paraguay and Mexico. I leave you here the draw and i will update the results. By the way, second legs of QF matches are going to be played after the World Cup, so we'll have to wait to see who is going to be the champion for a little while.
I also leave you a poll, for you to vote who do you think the champion will be.
My candidate: Velez. It has been the strongest team in Argentina for the last 2 years, they are untill now undefeated in the cup, and got a record of 5 victories on a row in group stage. Most of their players come from from their young squads wich in this years have become the best in Argentina.
Well, i leave you to vote and inform about this tournament.

Sad question. We arent playing it because of our bad campaigne in the 04/05 season :( . And River got in the last minute, because Racing lost the last 2 matches, and they played the previous round to get in.
But we''ll be back next year, and show who is the boss in America, hahah.
Anyway, instead we entertained ourselves winning everything else this season, but even though i miss the Libertadores nights, i have awsome memories :proud: .

Where are The Strongest
The Strongest didnt make it through the group fase, they where in group 3, together with Goias (Brazil)(1st, 11pts, 3w, 2d, 1l), Newell's (Argentina)(8 pts, 2w, 2d, 2l, 0 gd) and Unión Española (Chile) (3rd, 8 pts, 2w, 2d, 2l, -2 gd). They finished in last place with 6 pts, 2w, and 4l.
Anyway, i think they never got through further than round of 16 in Libertadores.
The Strongest (ironicaly) isnt one of the strongest teams in America, and its the second in Bolivia, behind Bolivar.
Well, here are the results of first legs of quarter finals, remember 2nd legs will be played after the world cup.
(in all cases home team is named first)
_River 2 (Daniel Montenegro, Erensto Farías)
Libertad 2 (Carlos Bonet x 2)
_LDU Quito 2 (Agustín Delgado, Ariel Graziani)
Internacional 1 (Jorge Wagner)
_Chivas 0
Velez 0
_ Estudiantes 1 (Agustín Alayes)
San Pablo 0
Sao Paulo will beat Estudiantes at the Morumbi. Their team was sold during the WC and we lost the first game out of bad luck.
We have a strong defence an awesome defencive midfield but lack a playmaker, since Danilo that was playing some World Class football last year isn't in good form. Also we have one of the best goalie in the world, better than Dida in my opinion, losing to Bufon and a few others ( really few).
Argentinian teams have no chance in this Libertadores. It will be Sao Paulo or Chivas...

ive voted river plate .. since quiet honestly i only know ( properly ) them and sao paulo i think it ll be them 2 in the final and river plate eventually winning it
We beat River twice last year 2x0 in Brazil and 3x2 at Monumental . And our team is quite the same...
River is already out, lost 3x1 the second match at paraguay...
And we (Sao Paulo) won yesterday and qualified to the semi finals!
Velez is out, there is no more teams from Argentina...
We can still have a brazilian final, like last year.
Semi Finals are:
Libertad (Paraguay) x Internacional (Brazil)
Chivas (Mexico) x São Paulo (Brazil)
My god, it was disgusting how Rogerio Ceni walked like a meter in the penalty he stoped. That was really stealing. Estudiantes boys effort should have had another reward. They where this close of leting you out, if you go far you should know you got there with a cheat.
This sounds interesting...so, when is the final?
I dont know, i dont care anymore, ask the brazilian.
All i know, is that on september 7 and 14, Boca-San Pablo for the Recopa.

The referee made mistakes against us all match, and because of a penalty people (and with that I mean crying-babies argentinians :p ) say he robed Estudiantes? And their keeper walked in the previous penalty too!
Sorry, but it seems we'll have the second brazilian final in two years. At least three years ago the rules didn't allow this to happen, maybe AFA shold start puting pressure in Conmebol for this rule come back...
And be sure we don't care for Recopa, we have our national league (wich we are first) and, I hope, the FIFA WC in the end of the year to worry about.

Today and tommorrow are the second legs from semi-final. Next week and the other are the finals (wednesday)
oh thanks flubio....unfortunately, libertadores is not shown on local TV here..
By the way does anyone know where i can stream the games or listen to them at least.
Well, I can't give you that answer unfortunately. What I can say its in Brazil it is shown by local TV ( Globo) and in the Latin America Fox has the rights of transmission.
Oh, São Paulo won 3-0 yesterday and it is in the final!! The game was quite good. Chivas was dangerous in the start and got a penalty in the 26th of he first half, wich Rogerio Ceni saved! Then the team wake up and scored two goals still in the first half and the fans started teasing Chivas saying (oh my poor english vocabulary) olé after each pass and drible São Paulo completed!
Then in the beggining of second half we scored again and buried the game! They still got a red card and we had some more chances, but that was it. Now we expect our adversary for next week match.
at least Chivas was able to defeat Sao Paulo in Morumbi after how many years? 16-17? of not losing a Copa Libertadores game at home?
it was all decided in penalty kicks... Rogerio Ceni scored his in the first leg, and Ramon Morales didn't do it yesterday, so well deserved for Sao Paulo... after that moment there was only one team on the pitch...
let's not forget Sao Paulo is the Libertadores and Intercontinental champion, and lost important players after last season... like Cicinho and Amoroso

19 years!
They beat us twice in the groups phase. They have a quite good team, with 6-7 players in the Mexico National Squad.
You're right, the penalty kicks were really decisive, but also São Paulo played both games better so deserved the two victories.
And São Paulo are WORLD champions ( cause the intercontinental cup turned world last year, with teams from Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and Australia too) :p283: :P
yes, actually the game in Guadalajara was pretty even... maybe Chivas had created more chances, but as often, not scored the goal, and Rogerio Ceni did a great job taking the PK... the second game was also even, and Chivas did very well until they missed the PK, as said, after that, it was all Sao Paulo...
Mexican teams, for some reason, are making it every single year to semifinals or finals, even the NT in Copa America, but are still missing that 1 little thing that makes good teams into Champions...
that little thing that makes teams like Sao Paulo or Boca Juniors get the win even the day don't play well...
We'll have the second brazilian final in two years! At least something our country to be proud in football after the WC fiasco!
This time goals away doesn't count... Tommorrow I'll leave 3 am to Morumbi ( the biggest private stadium of the world, for those who don't know) to buy my ticket!
Very anxious.
