I'm really surprised there wasn't a thread like this already.. but post the formation you'd most like to see AC Milan play only using CURRENT players. This isn't any fantasy starting 11 thread. Thanks :) I'll start it off.

---------------------Inzaghi------------------
---------------------------Gilardino-------------

------------Gourcuff--------------Kaka----------

--------------------Pirlo--Gattuso--------------

---Jankulovski-----------------------Brocchi-----

----------------Kaladze-----Nesta--------------

------------------------Dida------------------

Of course.. I would have preferred a different choice of strikers.. but options are limited at the moment ;)

I will list starters, and the 3 preferred substitutions...

---------------------Inzaghi (Borriello)------------------
---------------------------Gilardino-------------

------------Seedorf (Gourcuff)--------------Kaka----------

--------------------Pirlo--Gattuso--------------

---Maldini (Jankulovsky)-----------------------Cafu-----

I've never actually seen Boriello play.. so I don't really know his style.

SANT
24-07-2006, 22:29
he was a great prospect when under21... 2002-2003 was supposed to be when his year, when he established a position in Serie A... Gilardino did it with Parma, Borriello got a few chances with Milan but never acomplished what was expected... he jumped from team to team on loan, and finally towards the end of last season he showed some good things with Treviso...

hopefully this can be his year, if he is not loaned out again...

What type of striker is he though.. the Torres or the Inzaghi ?

SANT
24-07-2006, 22:41
hard to say... comparing him to either of those would be still too much... maybe none of them... physically, he's more like Torres, tall and strong... but more a number 9, like Pippo... if he could just be as agressive as Pippo is, he could improve a lot... he's got the skills to put the ball in, just sometimes he gets lost...you don't realize he's still playing...

hmm, vaguely I'd go with something like...

---------------------Gila-------------------

---------Kaka------------------------------

----------------------------Seedorf--------

-----------Ambro----Pirlo----Rino-----------

--Kala/Serginho--Maldini/Kala--Nesta--Cafu--

--------------------Dida--------------------

Kaka and Seedorf with freedom to roam and support Gila whilst Rino or Ambro protect Pirlo who is given freedom to move more.

This would probably change in given circumstances and based on how players are performing and tbh I do think we'll get the odd player (Buffon maybe?) who'd get in ahead of others.

Oh and in defensive situations either Seedorf or Kaka (more likely Seedorf, hence he's placed deeper) should drop back to make 2 lines of 4 in midfield and defence.

This team is a very strong side, but HAS to add some extra players. Gourcuff is simply too young, while Maldini , Cafu and Serginho are too old , aldough they always surprise all of us. With anouther forvard to rotate with pippo and gila, a player like Ze Roberto, and right back ( Oddo ), we have enough quality to win scudetto back. And then next year, Milan will shine with Silvio's help.

Seedorf is our #10, you guys really think he will not be starting? (well Rui Costa didnt start so you guys have a point :P)

I would favour this line up because i play it in winning eleven:

--------------------------- DIDA ----------------------------

------------ KALADZE(WEAK PT) - NESTA - MALDINI -----

--SEEDORF----GATTUSO-------PIRLO-----SERGINHO(janku)

----------------GOURCUFF----------KAKA-------------------

-----------------------GILARDINO---------------------------

But ofcourse knowing Ancelotti, he would never change formation and never play with a 3man defence so this is what we WILL see:

--------------------------- DIDA ----------------------------

---CAFU----- MALDINI ------- NESTA ----- JANKULOVSKI(serginho)

--------------------------- PIRLO ---------------------------

-----------GATTUSO--------------------SEEDORF----------

-----------------------KAKA (GOURCUFF)-------------------

----------------GILARDINO---------INZAGHI----------------

Gila + Inzaghi playing together is not a good idea at all, especially in big games. I honestly would rather gamble on Gourcuff rather than playing those 2 strikers. Hopefully we get a good striker so we dont have to worry about that.

I also am worried about Kaladze because I am certain he is not good enough. Its true that he plays his heart out but still he's not good enough for Milan i'm afraid. I think we will be getting some1 like Lugano,Barzagli,Gallas,Chivu. Also Costacurta can not be relied on. Cafu had a devastating WC, we need a RB even more than a striker. Daniel Alves?

Indeed, it was a shame that he didn't develop into a big star, hardly a regular in a middle level Serie A team like Empoli. He used to be as big a prospect as Gilardino, if not bigger. :(

What type of striker is he though.. the Torres or the Inzaghi ?

I remember in Milan official website, he was described to be like both Inzaghi and Vieri, superb positioning and strong too. I have failed to see the confidence in him in the very few games he played for us. Guess he was in a vicious circle.. :broken:

I would change the formation. Move Gattuso to central mid to provide cover for Pirlo, then put somebody like Foggia or Gourcuff in the right mid position and play with one striker. It should look something like this:

------------------Dida------------------

--Cafu-----Nesta-------Maldini------Sergio (Janku)

-------Gattuso---------Pirlo-----------------

Gourcuff(Foggia)--------Seedorf-------------

-------------Kaka---------------

If we don't make any transfers, I'd probably go with this formation:

---Dida---

Simic-----Nesta-----Kaladze-------Serginho

Gattuso-----Pirlo----Seedorf

-----Kaka-----

Gilardino---Borriello
_______________________________________________________________

With a few transfers:

------Dida------

Miguel-------Nesta-------Kaladze------Cole

Gattuso-----Pirlo-----Seedorf

-----Kaka-----

Giardino/Pippo-------Crespo/RVN

In the middle of the defense, I must admit I've been very impressed with the performance of Kaladze. Maldini, as much as I wish he could play until 80, I don't think he's capable of playing 90 minutes for an entire year and play CL football on top of that. Also, the same goes for Costacurta.
I think at the end of the upcoming campaign, we'll probably lose Maldini, Cafu, Costacurta, and Serginho because of old age :moan:

Costacurta should have retired this summer, Maldini will probably retire next summer ( i hope he stops at the right time rather than playing on and on and only being involved in a couple of games) and Cafu will go next summer unless used in a deal.

Serginho will be ok for another couple of years he's only 34 i think.

he looked very good for someone thats not played football in while.

he even managed to turn cygan (ok, hes not that good a defender but still hes alot younger than van basten) by chipping the ball over his head with his right foot and then volleying it towards goal with his left...very impressive marco :delol:

Kaka, Gourcuff,

Pirlo
Cafu, Seedorf, Gattruso, Foggia

further subs: Kalac, Costacurta, Favalli, Amoroso

i fear milan will sign another striker so inzaghi will have to sit on the bench and youngsters i would like to feature heavily as gourcuff, foggia and boriello will either be loaned out or rot on the bench

I believe that this is true, whether it will be his official shirt number is another matter though.

From what I've seen of this guy since I first heard of him, it seems it was a VERY smart move, and not only that, he may well be the next youngster to oust a seasoned star in our side (a la Kaka).

Everything about him really does feel like Zidane, his touch, movement, strength and control.

Honestly, I suspect we got a few names to come in yet this summer, but right now Gourcuff is certainly one I'd be keeping my eye on closely.

--------------------------- Dida ----------------------------

---Bonera----- Kaladze ------- Nesta ----- Jankulvolski

--------------------------- Pirlo ---------------------------

-----------Gattuso--------------------Seedorf----------

----------------------- Kaka -------------------

----------------Gilardino---------Inzaghi----------------

Main Subs:
Maldini - When healthy, anywhere in defense. If he regains his
form, he moves back into starting lineup. Probably pushing Jank out,
and moving Kaladze over to LB.
Cafu - RB
Favalli - LB, maybe CB 3rd string. Allows Maldini to play CB and Jank to sub Seedorf
Ambro,Vogel - Backup to Pirlo, Gattuso
Brocchi - Backup to RB,DM
Gourcuff - Kaka's backup, but also maybe Seedorfs backup if Jank is at LB

Other comments (just for the heck of it)
I'd rather replace Dida with Buffon/Amelia
Would have loved to see Zambrotta here, but alas

Still need another TOP foward to slide in to the rotation. Boriello can fill in as 4th striker until he establishes himself. But not as 3rd yet, not at Milan.

Still looking for a young defender to sub/learn/grow.

:wallbang: WHY! WHY! WHY! why didnt milan buy Grosso and Zaccardo!? WHY!?

Because inter already bought Grosso and he is not really young.

Zaccardo is the biggest piece of sh*t i have seen in the italian team. Do i need to mention more?

zlatanov
15-08-2006, 12:40
Actually, I think they both are simply not good enough for anything more than bench players at Milan, in fact in Zaccardo's case, even that would be pushing it, big time at that.
Grosso had exactly two moments of, some call it brilliance, I see it as some sort of divine intervention, that made him look like a much better player than he really is, IMO - one is the goal vs Germany, the other one is that PK he got for Italy vs Australia (which many would argue was more of a disgrace/cheating than brilliance).
Without these two moments, his WC perfomance could be described as average at the very best because, while he did make some nice runs down the left wing, he got caught time and again out of position at the back and even when he was there, his defending was quite questionable.
Add to all this the fact that he's 30 yo, what you get is exactly the type of player Inter would go for.

This seems like a good squad but seems more comparable to teams like Roma and Liverpool rather than Chelsea and Barcelona. Our midfield is very good and we have a solid central defense, but we need a striker. I'm not to keen of Cafu and Serginho either.

4-3-2-1
This is the best formation in modern football. But you must have solid defence, hard-working defensive midfield, creative attacking midfield and profilic scorer. AC Milan have them.
Ancelotti use this tactic very often, despite his remarks of playing 4-4-2. For this formation to function properly, we need improvment in full-back positions. Cafu is fantastic, but old. Left flank is volatile and fragile. And Kaka' need some help.

Rando
01-09-2006, 05:13
i think formation 4-2-3-1 is the best!
on 4-3-2-1 formation, the striker is too isolated.

mrki
01-09-2006, 06:11
our first team is good, but we lost Vogel, Ambro( for a lkong time) and an important player like Foggia that can change the tempo of the game and work on the flank. So my formation is....
-------------------------dida---------------------------
--cafu------nesta-----------kaladze--jankulovski
--------------------------pirlo--------------
----------gattuso------------seedorf........
-------------------kaka'---------
----------pippo--------oliveira----------

Of course, that will not happen as Carlo will never give Marek some real chance. One game is not enough for him to come back as his old self. He needs 5 games in a row and some freedom and confidence to be a LB we want him to. Gila could be on the bench simply becouse Pippo us too damn good!! And we need Oliveira to work as a winger at times.

Subs: Bonera, Simic, Maldini, Serginho, Gourcuff...and so on...... pretty weak bench.

zlatanov
01-09-2006, 06:25
there seems to be a chance, albeit a very slim one, that Ambro might be available for the NT's two games for Euro 2008. True, most probably he will be left home but I am guessing that his injury isn't as serious as previously feared.

dejan.s

4-2-3-1 leaves a big gap between the defence and AM's. This formation in four rows is very deep and striker is not far from AM's. This two guys behind will have a tough job transferring the ball. Plus, it's proven successful with Pirlo, Gatusso and Seedorf in 4-3-2-1. Now with Oliveira there is a partner for Kaka'.
And ACM will win every time when full backs provide the attack with enough balls from flanks. That’s this team weakness. Cafu is fantastic, but old for 90 minutes, sunday-wednesday. On the left side, Serginho fails in defence, Kaladze don't make enough successful crosses, Maldini is too old for coming in good shape after recovery, Jankulovsky don't get a chance to play. And, on the other hand, management fails this summer to sign good full backs (Grosso, Zambrotta, Oddo...)

Rando
02-09-2006, 17:48
i dont understand why 4-2-3-1 will cause big gap and difficulty transferring the ball. thats your opinion i respect it.
for me 4-2-3-1 formation is the best for milan for this season based on the type of the players we have.
4-3-2-1 will cause difficulty in creating scoring opportunities and we dont have to respect opponents that much to put 4 backline + 3 DM, also it is an insult for the 4 backline to have 3 DM in front of them.

I think the 4-3-1-2 is the best formation at the moment considering the players we have. They are all accustomed to it and once the 3 midfielders do their job both defensively and offensively.. we'll be unstoppable. Also our left & right side midfielders must also be ready to cover for our fullbacks who run up the width of the pitch.

Tony Soprano
05-09-2006, 21:17
Yes. playing 1 striker and benching 2 quality strikers doesn't seem like a good solution. If you don't want the striker to be isolated, pair him with another striker which we do. As for Kaka, I think he'll be getting plenty of help from Gourcuff. Also with our current formation, I wonder which striker will be benched between Gila, Oli, and Pippo.

Mystik
05-09-2006, 21:36

Maldini is great, probably one of the best Milan ever produced, but I doubt he'll be able to perform at the top level any much longer. If he's healthy this year, their is no way in hell Ancelotti will leave him on the bench. The only problem I see in playing Maldini is that It'll probaly push Kaladze on the Left side or Ancelotti will opt to start Serginho on the left. I really enjoyed seeing Kaladze flourish this year at the CB position alongside Nesta. He was by far the most solid and consistent defender we had this year and it would be a shame to leave him out of the 11 or simply push him to another position just to accomodate a player who'll probably finish playing this year.

nononono....what people fail to understand is that Carlo still didnt learn the lesson. and that lesson is that he needs to play with one striker, three DM, Maldini - Kaladze - Nesta - Bonera in the back and Pirlo and Kaka behind the striker.

I mean, to play Seedorf and Massimo and Gattuso is too offensive, we need to replace Seedorf with a DM... then and only then can we play for real.

No need to play possession football, give the ball to the other team!!! They'll have no use for it if we can take it from them in any given moment. Carlo needs to teach the back 7 that as soon as they get the ball they should try to pass it to one of the striker-Pirlo-Kaka or just give it to the other team :)

I dont agree, we must forget 2 DM,as we know milan draw against lille 0-0.And the reason is 2DM.last season is the example ambro was injured so milan just use pirlofor DM,and the reasult is milan made so manygoal last season

I was actually serious about this!
Who could penetrate such a shield?? They'd only have to press the opponent, take the ball and *try* to pass it forward. One time out of many it could work and that could be enough. It might even be fun for the players.

Don't be so grim people, all is not black. Even if Carlo plays Ambro and Rino, Kaka, Pirlo and two strikers the only thing that needs to be done is to ensure the two strikers moove enough. That is really *the only* thing that needs to be done. Kaka and Pirlo are a sufficient creative force to beat any team out there, it's just they cant do it if our strikers are static.

Another thing is playing Seedorf as no.10 player (in a Rui Costa role) and Kaka and a single striker. That cold work if Seedorf can play that role. I for one believe in Clarence!

these tactics should be used depending on oponents, IMO. It's a waste of talent to just say that Ambro and Rino must never play together as in certain cases - whether because of the oponent or resting players or both - it would benefit the team if they are played together.
Against Lille, given the pacey players they have and their tactics - lots of wingplay - the best way to control was to use a X-tree like vs ManU (Lille are very similar to ManU's style of play).
We shouldn't forget however that Gourcuff was injured and that's what probably changed Carlo's plans. With Gorky available, I think he would have played Seedorf instead of Ambro and Gorky next to Kaka in support of Gila.
So, let's not be too quick critisizing the coach because his plans were altered by things like Gourcuff's injury that are well beyond Carlo to prevent.

It might just not be about holding possesion, but what you do with it that counts..anyway, if we are using Pirlo to pass the ball up forward and him being pressed is a problem, there are two possible solutions that I can see atm:
1) put Seedorf @ LM and send long passes to him from defense and have him play 'a Pirlo' -- this could be used well in the XMass Tree.
2) put Janku on LM and have him pair up with Kaladze to try to run with the ball out of defence, and if need be, give the ball *back* to Pirlo who should be open (they have to try and stop the two dont they?) -- this is not very x mass tree.
The thing is, with both of theese, we would need a defensive LB (Maldini or Favalli) to provide cover if a pass goes wrong or a run is stopped (a dangerous place to loose the ball). Both would give Pirlo a lot more space and both would let us play with Cafu on the right (altho I would preffer Bonera). In the end it would depend on how good a defender is Maldini nowdays or is FAvalli capable enough. We could always go SErginho there -- that would be all offensive (with Cafu) but might be a bit too much for Kaka to handle. (all that left sided mooving). Hehe -- had we signed Zambrotta ... Carlo would have more options today for LB .

That's dependant on how great at tackling/tracking back and other defensive midfield duties the other players are. Unfortunately Kaka, Pirlo and particularly Seedorf aren't the best at this. So i think a player more capable of defensive duties is what is needed, but not necessarily an out and out defensive midfielder.

Besides which, i would like to see us play 4-3-3 for a run of games to see if it's a formation which could work for us. I think it would help the midfield more, but it could place more pressure on already fragile strikers.

CAFU ---- NESTA ---- MALDINI ---- MAREK

---- BROCCHI --- PIRLO --- SEEDORF -----

---- KAKA --- INZAGHI --- OLIVEIRA -----

Gattuso would obviously fill in Brocchi's place when he comes back. Gourcuff can deputise for Seedorf and Serginho can play in both the left-back and left-forward role when he returns. Gilardino and Oliviera can replace Inzaghi in the middle depending on other players availability.

I mentioned in the Holland v England thread that i think the 4-3-3 formation would help our midfield and in particular Seedorf alot. He would be covered by 2 players instead of one on the left wing and in defensive situations (ie when we're without the ball) the wide players can drop back a touch to make a 4-5-1 formation, making it harder for the opposition to pass through us. An important part of this formation would be for a midfielder and the wide players to get in the box so as not to leave just the front man in there by himself. If a cross comes in from the right (Kaka), then the left sided player (Oliveira) has to make sure he comes into the box to follow up the cross and vice versa. Obviously the left and right sided players can swap when they need to.

it's definitely worth a try but at the moment i would leave pirlo and nesta out of the team and play

seedorf - brocchi - gourcuff

in the middle.

both italians are far from their best and should be rested for some time (2 - 3 weeks or so). something like inter did with adriano.

What I think is needed at this moment is to get Pirlo in form again. Then, push him further up the field and give him freedom like he had in Italy.
To do this we need someone in Pirlo's place who can pass the ball good and take care of it. At the same time he needs to be better at defending then Pirlo. At this time, the best thing we are looking at is Brocchi, but he has to fill in for Gattuso. If that wasn't the case, I would gladly put Brocchi in Pirlo's place and Pirlo in Seedorf's leaving Seedorf on the bench.
Untill then though, I think trying out

-------------Brocchi--------
---Pirlo----------------Seedorf/Gourcuff

can prove to be good. Pirlo can be fatal if given the freedom to go further up the field just like he was in Italy.

Playing a 4-1-1-2-2

It would be one of the two defensive midfielders, definitely. Two of Gattuso/Ambro/Emerson would be sacrificed so we can play with two strikers. If it were up to me I would have Ambro and Gattuso out there all the time because our team is soooooooo balanced that way. Even though I'd love to see Pato and Ronaldo up front, I think Milan will play better with the X-mas tree.

Ancelotti did mention he is going to try that after the break. Check acmilan.com

"I think that after the break we shall see in many games the Milan with two strikers. Seedorf wants to play behind the attackers since always, but in the first years he sacrificed himself. We could also change the tactic, we could also play with two attackers and two forwards. It's difficult to choose, but it's always better to choose and to make a mistake, rather than not having the possibility of choice."

Gila on the bench. Inzaghi upfront with Pato (when available), or Ronaldo (when fit), or Kaka (if both are unavailable).

Clarence should do the playmaking as I believe he's better suited in that role, with Ambrosini/Gattuso and Pirlo as our defensive mids. Oddo on the right (no other option), Jankulovski on the left, Kaladze and Nesta in the center of defense.

This formation will NEVER BE USED by Ancelotti although I think it could work:

DIDA

BONERA NESTA KALADZE

GATTUSO PIRLO AMBROSINI

SEEDORF KAKA

RONALDO PATO

Bonera is more defensive than Oddo and so is Kaladze compared to Janku. Gattuso and Ambro are additional protection in the back and on top of all that we would still manage to play with 2 strikers and Seedorf and Kaka behind them!! An attacking force of Seedorf, Kaka, Ronaldo and Pato asssisted with the fluid passes of Pirlo and the ability of Gattuso and Ambrosini to close down opponents midfields would create the most unstopable team out their in my opinion. Again, this formation will NEVER be used but it sure would be nice.

I think, if we want to use 4-3-1-2 again, we should find young Seedorf who could play well both offensively and defensively. Plus we have also to find a great fullback. I miss the time we had young Seedorf and Khaladze on left side of our formation.

I’ve been recently thinking and about our problems, thinking mostly of ways to try and help reduce our problems to try and claim the CL spot and also to try and get more from the players, especially key figures currently not producing. Along with this, I’ve also been looking to see how we can build on what we currently have for next season, considering we can’t buy a new team and have to look to build around what’s currently available.

That said, most will agree we have some great players to build a new team around, with Nesta, Pirlo, Kaka and Pato looking like the spine of the side for a few years yet.

Moving back to the present, most will agree we’re currently in serious trouble and something needs to be done in our last push for 4th spot. Currently, few players are performing, and most know the issues of our play this season (slow, predictable, lacking cohesion and organisation, playing extremely deep, lack of width and quality service for front men). The first aspect to change is attitude and morale, which simply couldn’t be worse. We need to work harder for our wins at home and we need to look to gain confidence. This is easier said than done, as unless the team can get a couple of results at home, it’s not likely to change quickly. My hope is with some changes in the side, this may improve.

Now onto on field problems, and clearly there are some issues. In wide areas, the problems with wing backs couldn’t be worse. Never mind most of our fullbacks playing awfully 90% of the time; our two starting wingbacks are now injured, as are their backups. This means that for the rest of the season, we have to rely on guys like Bonera, Simic, Favalli and Maldini, meaning we simply won’t get much width when attacking if we continue as we are. Therefore, we must look alternative ways to get width.

The next issue is in midfield, which quite frankly is all over the place. Gattuso’s presence is rarely felt, he’s struggling with the technical side of his game and simply seems out of sorts. Ambro often has been going forward to try and help, and it has worked to some effect, but defensively he’s almost no where to be seen of late. Then there’s Pirlo who seems to be unable to cope of late, probably physically tired, but even moreso mentally drained. In this area, I would think some organization is needed to make sure we don’t get run over so easily. More importantly, we need to try and lift the spirits of the midfielders.

In attack, there’s too much relying on Pato, he needs more support. Him, and others, like Kaka, have had to drop far too deep through this season to pick up the ball to try and make things happen. This reduces effectiveness and numbers further up the field (let’s not forget we already play too deep as it is). These guys need the support from behind to try and make the difference. The other factor that’s a problem is we’re too narrow still, and the middle of the park getting congested (making defending against us easier).

So, if in Carlo’s shoes, I would look to try and change things around, as we simply aren’t functioning. A change would at least mix things up a little, giving the players something new to work on, rather than keeping focus on the current rut. A start would be to address the wide areas.

Considering our lack of wide options, I’d look to try and allow Maldini and others focus more on defending than attacking. This means we need to get width further up the field, and in mind I think Kaka (who will finally return) and Pato are important. These guys have to look to get wide regularly imo, looking to spread the play better across the field, rather than clumping together in the middle of the field. If successful, there will be less pressure on the fullbacks to be bombing forward through matches.

Moving onto midfield, I think a reshuffle is needed, to try and freshen the players minds, but utilise their best qualities. For a start, I would try and put less pressure on Rino and Ambro to go forward (maybe one attacks during an attack). Therefore, I would look to get them to perform their roles as defensive midfielders. Pirlo on the other hand I would look to push forward, as currently he plays very deep (he starts attacks when in line with defence). To some degree, I would like to see him playing a role closer to his old playmaking role than the deep lying playmaker role. I would give him freedom in this role, as he’s probably our most intelligent player, and thus won’t simply run around like a headless chicken. His role would be important for another reason, as now I’d want him to press opponents higher up the field than where he does now. This change would hopefully see the midfield being used in their most natural roles, also giving them a mental lift when playing.

These changes would hopefully remove some of our current obstacles (at least width and playing too deep), with the team looking something like this:

------------------------Kalac-----------------------
Bonera---Maldini-----Kaladze-----Favalli--
--------------Rino---------Ambro----------------
----------------------Pirlo--------------------------
-------Kaka--------------------------Pato--------
-----------------------Gila/Palo-------------------

Pirlo is really the key in this system, as his positional play on field is paramount. He cannot allow himself to drop too deep, doing so will almost certainly result with use playing too deep as we do now. The movement between Pirlo, Kaka and Pato is also of huge importance, as they would be important in opening spaces for the front man. Pressing higher up will also hopefully allow us to catch opponents before they reorganise, naturally quickening our play.

For next season, I would consider building on this, with new fullbacks offering greater options as an attacking threat, a couple of new midfielders (Flamini and someone else ideally) to offer options in the team and a target man (Gomez ideally). With Flamini in, we could look to give more rest to Rino and Ambro (or they may even go to the bench), and we could even look to give Kaka the playmaking role that Pirlo has and let Pirlo go into DM. However, this then depends on the other new midfielder, who would have good attacking qualities and can play wider (Quaresma type player?), leaving some thing like this:

------------------newGK--------------------
FB------Nesta------------CB--------FB--
------------Flamini----Pirlo----------------
----------------------Kaka-------------------
-------Quaresma---------------Pato------
--------------------Gomez-------------------

*Note: not mentioned the personnel in defence other than Nesta, as no one else is assured of a spot.

I feel a refresh is needed, this isn’t a revolution of the team or system, but rather varying of what we currently have. With some minor but important changes, I’m confident we have the chance to be very strong.

In terms of mercato, ideally I would like to see 1 GK, 2 FB, 1 CB, 2MD and 1FW of which at least three are new starters (GK, FB and FW).

Edit: Sorry for the long post

All formations are essentially variations of each other, but i talked about switching to a 4-2-3-1 system earlier in the season. I think that or a fluid 4-3-3 is the way to go. The 4-3-3 would be a big step though because Kaka wouldn't have his central position and ideally the central player in midfield should be a Gattuso/Makelele type of player and not Pirlo.

I'm going to anger alot of people now, but if we did have a 4-2-3-1 formation, i would not initially put Pato wide left, i would look for us to secure a proper left-sided player like Ribery or Ronaldinho and have Pato & Boriello on the bench. I just think the young Brazilian has alot to learn about when to dribble and when to pass, plus coming on as a sub would take alot of the pressure off of him.

So take your set-up and add these players

---------------------Frey-----------------------------------
Eboue------Nesta---------------CB-----------Vargas--
-----------Flamini---------------Pirlo-----------------------
----------------------Kaka--------------------------------
---Quaresma---------------------------Ronaldinho------
----------------------Gomez--------------------------

Bench: Kalac/Dida, Bonera, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Di Gennaro/Abate?, Pato, Boriello

I don't think this is too unrealistic now since Ronaldinho's price could be just £12 million.

I think the 4-3-1-2 works perfectly well in my opinion. It's a system that the players know and have played for many years. Unless we buy some natural wingers, we're not going to be able to utilise many more radically different systems.
