pirlo was good, but if you give great players that much space you're going to pay for it.

ambrosini & jankulovski were very good i thought, as was inzaghi for his movement

Ridiculous to concede such a sloppy goal...man...and we looked so good at times...I really cant wait for R99 to return though...this way, even when we concede, we will be so far in front, it would only be semantics.

Not unhappy though ultimately....we were going to go to sleep at some point...better in added time with a cushion than any other...wish we wouldnt shut off though...and we shouldnt, not with the wealth of experience we have...but again, we concede on a set piece...and we cannot blame Dida there...he was faultless in that goal.

Good...no GREAT game by Pirlo, Kaka had his moments, as did Seedorf.

Pippo....good goal, but should have had a hattrick at the very least.

Glad for the 3 points though.

what's gilardino got to do with it? What a pathetic attempt at trying to have a go at a player.

6 yards out and only the keeper to beat, he should have scored. All he had to do was put it either side of him not straight at him.
I know i should'n brought him up again, but i tried to display what u didnt understand - if it wasnt for pippo it may not even be a chance. And talking about where to shoot when a shot alone was hardly performed is just nonsense.

Get it, you saying he should't miss and i thinking he did great to get a shot on goal where many would just look stupid.

We should've be more clinical upfront and killed the match, nevertheless it's a deserved win. And after a humiliating performance against Siena last weekend, we showed glimpses of our true potentiality tonight. Good night everyone, FORZA MILAN

yes it should have been offside ... anyways, Milan wins by 2-1 and more importantly after a pretty good display ... we weren't flauless but apart from Liveropool, who is? :zany:

P.S. I bet Liverpool would love to play Darby C. in every game of the CL ;)

pirlo was off the hook today...
all in all great game and intensity by all, except for the usuall momentary ineptness at defending crosses... and a couple hospital balls rino played to pirlo.

Not a bad performance, just inconsistent. We started well (though thanks to Benficas negative play) but took a while to get going in the 2nd half.

Dida - 6. A couple of good saves, wasn't tested too much. Poor punch before their goal but (most) can't blame him too much.
Oddo - 7. Good running and some good crosses.
Nesta - 7. Pretty solid.
Kala - 6. Didn't always do what was expected, few errors let in their players.
Janku - 7. Same as Oddo, not as effective though.
Pirlo - 8. Was allowed to run the game, fortunate goal to be honest, nice assist for Pipppo.
Ambro - 6. Guilty of a couple poor crosses and missed chances.
Kaka - 6. Not one of his best nights to be fair, didn't do too much.
Seedorf - 7. Good link up play, helped carve out lots of chances.
Gattuso - 6. Fairly quiet, soldiered on.
Pippo - 7. Always waiting, took his goal well, but should have a had more.

Subs - 6. Gila not very active, Emerson helped control the midfield, Bonera did ok - not a bad cross to Kaka.

Not to take anything away from the team, but we were lucky not to concede from Benfica in the first half - and that annoying (which I just knew was coming), ridiculous late goal didn't make us pay.

But Forza Milan anyhoo, I'm not one to moan that much.

This was really a Classical Ancelotti's Milan as we all know it very well. We didnt push too hard as its important to win our next serie a game as well...

Too bad yoan wasnt introduced instead of Emerson, but he wasnt even on the bench for some reason. And I feel sorry for Pippo's misses as he could have scored at least one more goal and come just one behind Gerd Muller who has 62 in european cups. Now our Pippo has 60!! 3 more and he is the best european scorer of all times!!!

Also, in the end of the match we saw officially the most defensive side every to play in an Champions league match. It looked like this:
-----------------dida--------------------
----bonera--nesa---kaladze--jankulovski---
-----------------pirlo------------
-----gattuso---------ambrosini------
-----------emerson------------
----------------------kaka'---------
--------------gilardino--------

Another record broken!!!! :grinser: 3 centre backs and four defensive midfielders! I bet Real Madrid cant match that! :zany:

In the end I want to say that we really miss some pace and a player to play alongside Kaka', but that is not anything new. I hope Ronaldo and Pato can help us with this.

Wont go in what you have to do to score, it sounds easy but we all know it isnt.

These would be my rankings

Dida - 6 - not much to do still looks shaky on set pieces
Oddo - 7. Great first half, slowed in the second
Nesta - 6. Solid didnt have any special tackles to make
Kala - 5. Poor , lost his man several times does not look in good form
Janku - 7 a lot of runs although inconsistent crosses, worked hard
Pirlo - 8. Ran the midfield and assist to pirlo was amazing.
Kaka - 6. looked out of sorts somewhat, played well just not up to his usual high standard
Seedorf - 6. didnt do much a few nice passes.
Gattuso - 6. ran hard as usual
Pippo - 8 Usually not a fan of this man! but had a very good game, good goal and great runs

why's everyone having a go at Gilardino? He's not done anything wrong yet!

Exactly. This is the kind of attitudes that some have been endorsing over here, and I completely don't understand the logic behind. (I'm pointing at certain individuals). True, he has been really poor so far since last season and didn't do much (e.g., not scoring important goals). But other than that he hasn't done much wrong either.

People just start picking up like him like he is never a good player and he should be sold RIGHT NOW. Why don't we just ask Galliani to make a phone call to Sheffield Wednesday and offer them FREE OF CHARGE. Then at least Sheffield Wednesday can save themselves from relegation or something.

Here is how some of us are so biased here: "We should give more chances to Gourcuff", "he is such a great player with potential" but to be honest against Siena he sucked, too. He didn't create any special chances; dribbled past one player and sent in a cross that none Inzaghi or Gilardino could got to. Yet people say, "I think he is just great" etc.

This kind of attitude is getting worse and worse; and I bet people will keep talking about this even if he scored. I don't know how we can be so biased against him. He played bad, ok, but people are so used to finding him as a scapegoat these days that posts about him have been ridiculously of low qualities lately.

Am I getting emotional? I guess so; Am I getting irrational? Hell no.

I'll try to bring out the positives..........I think we played a great 1st half. It's true Benfica had their chances but they are a great side and you can't possibly expect to totally shut them down although some of their opportunities came from our own sloppyness. The second half was more calm, and we tried to keep the ball. I actually expected that from Anelotti because he wanted to play it safe. The more you play at pace and push forward the more room you leave behind you..........and the more time you take to build the play the safer you are. That's what Ancelotti did in the second half and it worked out good. We won the game which is the most important thing.

Mrki, I have to agree that that was possibly the most defensive side to ever feature in the CL. :grinser:

Oh, and also this, Kaka' is completely out of shape, and as much as this formation is doing a great job, I would still want to see him with two forwards in front of him. KAka' is a central attacking midfielder, not a supporting striker. Right now he lacks pace and power, aguess he hasnt reached his full fitness level yet. Same goas to Nesta and Kaladze who dont look fit for me.

Oddo, my compliments!!!!

the ball went thru another benfica player before it reached Nuno Gomes, who was not offside, himself ... that other player however was offside, I believe, and I think he even touched the ball before it reached Nuno Gomes.
Even if he didn't touch the ball, it should still have been offside as he was right there in the center of things and was "active" in that situation.

seriously though, JM is redefining the meaning of the phrase 'beautiful football" :grinser:

Trust me guys, this goal Benfica scored hurts me more than it hurts all of you together :(

Still, i wouldn't call offside for that. That player didn't touch the ball and even though he was involved with his presence, i'd still call it a passive offside.
But again...WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY does it always happens to me ?

Couldnt watch todays games, as I wont be able to watch the evening games in the month of Ramadhan, looks like we got a good result (Ive seen the quick highlights and it was a pretty silly goal to concede towards the end). But still we had a pretty decent game and what a fk from Pirlo - out of this world.

I dont see the difference between Chelsea from last year and this year - same boring style year after year. Theres only one team that plays beautiful football in the PL. Should be a cracker tomorrow.

ACMILAN1983

Pleasing result today and the performance wasn't bad at all either. Benfica had their chances and probably deserved a goal, but we deserved a few more too, so the result is definately fair.

I ended up missing much of the first half but later caught up and we looked aggressive and hungry. The players worked hard with chances created all match. Pirlo's freekick was magnificent and so was Pippo's volley, from another Pirlo assist. However, Benfica were a little unfortunate not to score, but as I said above, we deserved a few more too.

The second half wasn't as fast as the first and we controlled play more, looking to hold what we had and not overcommit giving Benfica a chance back into the match. Other than the goal, which was offside anyway, they produced very little. We did well imo, as we still managed to create numerous chances.

Players...

Dida - a lot better than at Siena, but he still looked a little shaky, especially on backpasses.
Oddo - good game, pushed forward well and was dangerous
Nesta - Solid as usual, no complaints
Kala - Pretty shaky, never looked totally confident tonight
Janku - Excellent all game, great timed runs, excellent crossing and solid in defence
Rino - Not his best game, but not bad.
Pirlo - Outstanding, he really is at his best lately
Ambro - An unsung hero in our side, always tough tackling, very solid and a good option going forward
Seedorf - Much better than Saturday, he looked much more up for it today
Kaka - Though not his best (he didn't look fully recovered), he provides moments of magic and is always a threat
Pippo - Great game, and displayed something Gila could learn from, as rather than waiting for the ball to reach him when put into the box he attacks it every time, always looking to get in ahead of defender.
Emerson - Interesting to see him pushed forward a little, did well after coming on
Bonera - Was solid and actually did well when he got forward, putting in one really great cross
Gila - He did well after coming on. His ability to drop deep to support midfielders and to hold the ball was good for that point of the match.

The key factors that I had problems with on Saturday were not to be seen today. The players played with a good determination and were professional. The pace of our play was much better and our swift attacks resulted in a great deal of threatening play in wide areas, as Benfica never had time to regroup. Though we would never be able to play at that same pace against Siena, it would have been nice to have seen it controlled and worked like we did in the second half (where we'd play in unpredictable bursts).

I loved to see Emerson come on today. With Ambro, Gattuso and Emo we had a wall in midfield which Benfica did nothing against. Fantastic to see the game closed off like that.

A quick word on being pleased to see Sheva score tonight. Lately in England I feel bad for the guy as he's treated as rubbish and Mourinho clearly has issues with him.

Final word however, I save for Rui Costa. The man has had a fantastic career and his time at Milan was important for the side, especially in 2002/03 where he was a key factor in our CL success. A staunt professional who's always been loved by many will finally hang up his boots at the end of this season and it's wonderful that we got to see him at the San Siro one last time. I was proud of the way the fans showed respect to him when he left the field and at the end of the match and am glad he will know how much he has meant to us.

FORZA MILAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

happy to read you because I can't undestand this unreasonable love for the french youngster: he has to build himself yet and first he must earn confidence of the team (and of the coach), so we can't risk at all: do you really think Carletto is stupid? Sure, his time will come, but now it's not an obbligation to give him a place in the start 11 if he plays like in Siena where Gorky should have show all his talent, because he should know that he is playing in AC Milan where is hard to earn and deserve a place.

I loved to see Emerson come on today. With Ambro, Gattuso and Emo we had a wall in midfield

I was always indifferent towards Pirlo inclusion in the line up when he joined Milan. I did not see this guys true worth. 4 or some years later I was truly blind. In my opinion I can forcefully proclaim there is no player on this earth, pro or amateur who plays the deep lying creative role the way Andrea does. Simply nobody. This guy is a true genius, if people didn't see his value in Germany last year, well ......they have time to catch up.
Historically, there are maybe 2 players who maybe mentioned in the same light as Andrea. Falcao ( for those of you older than the fall of the Berlin wall) and Fernando Redondo at his peak in Madrid.
The unique aspect about Pirlo's functionality is that even if various teams attempted to employ Milan's strategy(of deep lying creator), I don't think they would pull it off. Today's club teams are obsessed with the "Makelele role", even though it is effective, it lacks the beauty and romanticism of what Pirlo brings to this game we love.

Great win Ragazzi

Perhaps; but I'm not comparing them. I'm comparing with the way people responded and how vastly different we saw things. In all honesty, I haven't seen Gourcuff earning a place in the team either. His ball-holding skill is amazing though, and so might be helpful in the last few minutes or so (e.g., against Bayern Munich) in holding up the ball. Other than that, I haven't seen him created any chance for our strikers.

This was a great game....congrats to all the team, shame Yoan wasnt there,30 min of the game would have been great for his confidence.

What can I say about Pirlo, read my signature. It says it all.

But I dont think that Pirlo was the difference today, nor Kaka not Pippo.
I think that ODDO and JANKU were the ones that gave us this victory today. For the first time both of them played as they are supposed to play. They reminded us(at least me) why they were bought in the first place.Their pace, driblings and fine crosses made the difference. For the firs time Oddos crosses were finding Pippo or smb else.

Our game since Cafu arrived is depended a lot on thee fullbacks, Tonight when I was watching our FB play,I recalled the days when CAFU and PAncaro were doing some serious damage to other teams, that year we won the Scudetto. they both combined had 20 + assist that season.

I really hope they continue like this in the future, Both Oddo and janku are very important for the xmass formation, cuz most of Pirlos passes end up wide on the flanks, and if we can not make use of them than we can not expect great results

About gorky

The player got all the tools to be compared to zidane except that his offensive skills is bit behind. But such skills comes with age and games, I remember zidane's years in france and first year in juven,It's good but by no means great and silky. he just flourished ,erupted ,elevated by level out of nowhere in his second year at serieA.So gorky kind of player worth a wait.

Besides, Even he can not fully developed his potential. He is still a decent sub in this position.he can hold the ball, dish out good passes once in a while;he's been physical,a more defensive existence than seedorf;he reads the game well, blend in our system seamlessly. Right now,he won't be a weak link in our formation at least.

So I say he worth a wait, even a long wait. Give him time at siena, give him time at udinese, palemo. even give him time at milan derby if when we are 3 days after a CL game.

And for the FIRST TIME I saw Oddo from Lazio playing for Milan! He was concentrated enough, and played really a great game. Nothing to say, we didnt play at 100% but we did enough. Gattuzso and Ambrro were not pushing enough at times, but that wasnt necessary. Now Celtic...

Yeah, i know he suckd. He is french, he is young, he is unused of serie a (how many matches has he played, how many started?), he is unused of his changing position. If he underperforms till summer 2009 he will be far out from milan, maybe even before. Thats what happens with players that are not good enough for milan.

Whats the excuse for gila? He works hard? Well, he doesnt do what he should yet we still rely heavily on him. And it goes on for quite some time now. Nevermind, dont wanna even talk about gila anymore, he is lucky we have injured ronaldo and old inzaghi, he will play more games till january. Then he will get a chance to prove himself with pato (these 2 could be our future!) or he will warm the bench and exit the club in summer, righty so and maybe even just a bit too late.

Though Milan could have scored more, and should not have conceded that last minute goal by Nuno Gomes, I have to say that I am satisfied with our performance, and believe that this win was absolutely essential in order for our players to regain their morale, as well as starting the UCL in style. For the UCL group phase, one game won, five more to go... Let's hope our boys can keep this up both in the UCL and Serie A.... FORZA MILAN!!!

I agree with you. Falcao was one of the best play makers I saw but, if I well remember, both he and Redondo hadn't the long precise Pirlo pass.
According to me, for his precision in the long kick, I can compare Pirlo only with - today I'm politically correct because i saw a great AC Milan yesterday night (ok, we should have score more) - Luisito Suarez Gianni Rivera and Michel Platini.

Now Celtic...

not to take anything away from Oddo but the Benfica player in charge of marking him was some inexperienced 18yr old, you could tell

I have to say that our Andrea Pirlo is playing, right now, like one of the best players in the world. Actually, maybe, the best (who's playing better than he is?). Just because he is not that flashy and doesn't get any media hype, shouldn't blind people to that fact.

Barcelona on the other hand .... WOOOOOOOOOOOOW
Poor finishing aside, this was perfect in any sense. Only Milan destroying Manchester at SS comes close to the dominance Barcelona had tonight.
It was a pleasure watching Dinho-Henry-Deco-Messi-Xavi creating chances. It was a pleasure watching Zambrotta-Abidal ( best full backs in the world, without any doubts) and the defense did also great.
This could have easily been a 7:0 win for Barcelona.
I think Barca is atm the only team that can create a chance whenever they want.

I have a solution for Inter:

Give Recoba a raise at Torino.

Then buy 6 more midfielders.

Then get Guido Rossi to work his magic and increase the second round to 17 teams.

Then trade Zanetti for Zaccardo (like R. Carlos for Pistone).

Finally, sell us Adriano.

Lyon's performance did help them a lot, but they were brilliant, you can't say they weren't (i don't know how can anyone say they weren't amazing tonight)
It's true that a great team can hurt them but it will take 101% to beat them this year in CL.
Just look at their team and the way they play (forget some minor league matches. Milan also play horrible sometimes in serie A ) .
I guess we watch the game differently because i think Dinho was perfect tonight (he wasn't substituted because he was bad, far from that). He and Abidal were raping Lyon's right back. Dinho let Messi to be the star of the night and he was only creating space for the others..... but he did it brilliantly. And he still did show magic once or twice (that pass to Messi... class).

They are #1 favorites, together with Milan. Of course, this is CL, a bad day and they're out, but with Barca you really don't know where does the danger comes from. Henry up-front with Messi and Dinho on the sides ( helped by Zambrotta and Abidal on the flanks and Deco and Xavi from the middle) can always create at least 5 100% chances, i'm sure about that.
Defensively..... i don't know why did Warro say they've shown weaknesses tonight when Lyon couldn't create a single chance. Zambrotta and Abidal deserved 10.00 , while Milito and Marquez ( don't forget Puyol and Thuram) , with Toure as a DMC stopped all attempts Lyon to get close to Valdez.

This team is better than the team that won CL in 2006. They have 4 new players in starting XI and they still need a little more time to gel (especially Henry). And when they do that..... i pitty their opponents.
Don't like them at all but it was amazing what i've seen from them tonight.

P.S : And since i'm right and they really were great , i have to conclude that all the ones who say they aren't something special are only afraid of them
:D

As much as I want Milan to win the champions league, I do hope the team that we meet in the final be chelsea. Just like it was mentioned earlier, Barcelona looks unstoppable, but we can take them. I truly believe in teams peaking early in this competition, so I believe its good we did not go out there last night and score four or five goals: we will build up to great things. Im just worried with the curse of the back to back winner, because no one has done it in so long........

the last team to do it was Milan who had Paolo Maldini has a promising youngster :) so he knows what it takes. I think we can but I think we need more depth in January. Oddo was so important to our CL win, imagine we had Cafu for the knock out phases! I think we can make a couple of key signings come January, I dont think we will keep a 100% record or anything close to it until winter. Unfortunately, we are playing really bad in Serie A and I expect the same next weekend, but lets just hope for the three points.

About Barca, yes they are too strong and they are almost perfect, paradoxically(sp?) that is IMO why they will not win :) Milan need to be off the favourites list for us to win, that is when we perform best. I say lets lose the next 2 games in CL for us to come back in rage in the knock-out phases :D

Nothing, nothing is better than this AC Milan side when our backs are against the wall. When we are favourites however, that is a different situation and it could go both ways.

I got the first half but couldnt make it for the second - was a great game just pure attacking football.

Tony I dont think Barca are a team to fear, they can and will be beaten by a team with European pedigree (Milan, Liverpool etc) as they look vulnerable sometimes. But you could say after after Milan and Arsenal if I wanted a team to win it would probably be Barca for the simple reason that I want one player to end up with a CL before he hangs up his boots.

I think that barca will fall sooner or later, no doubts. Maybe not in group stages, but later in knockouts. If some tactical team takes them up they will fall apart - they can still win, but they will struggle alot (another thing is i think Rijkaard cannot react properly). They can create 5 100% chances but with henry and messi upfront they can miss 10 of that. Fearsome attack, but organized teams can punish them more that they can swallow.

They did play great, kudos to them... still i agree with Hitmann on that one.

Defensively they have got some flaws, and big teams in the UCL can take advantage of it. On the other hand , though, they have got an offensive line which I'm afraid to say, is by far the best in the world(for this season, that is). They have got such immense firepower that they could flatten a small country like Liechtenstein.
Let's see how far they will go this year. As some people suggest, Lyon did give them too much space, but I don't think that factor can overshadow their outstanding performance last night.

Barcelona didn't play great. Certainly not brilliant. I expect much more of a team to say that they played brilliant. Only Messi did great. And there was one good teammove with the goal of Messi. But that is their strongest asset of course: they can create a goal chance at any time and they don't have one or two players to create goalchances at their own, like most of the teams, but 4-5 players.
They also have become stronger in defence: Abidal and Milito really have made the defence better and it looks like Zambrotta has find his good form.
And last but not least, Barcelona has bought Touré Yaya. They allready call him the missing link in Barcelona and that really sais it all. He is somewhat the Pirlo of Barcelona, off course his crossing isn't as good as Pirlos at all, but he combines defence with offence and really every player of Barcelona on the field with eachother like the best.

OT , but just look at comments on forza inter prior to the Fener game :D

I think Uefa should start putting teams on merit in CL, and not restrict the big leagues to have only 4 teams in the CL. That way, we will have teams like Atletico Madrid, Villareal, Fiorentina and Palermo in the CL, rather than crappy teams like Febrenache(or however the hell, they spell it) which no one gives a **** about.
What a boring start to CL.

Don't be jealous that your team means nothing in the world of football. You will face European giant who will teach you a lot so at the end it will be beneficial for you. You still can fight for 3rd place and gain another European experience in UEFA Cup.

Exactly what I was trying to say, they have some faults and a big European team will expose these faults just like Liverpool did last year. They had a decent game but to say they are one of the favourites after just the one game is rubbish, first goal was an own goal and the third goal was scored off a rebound.

They have the best firepower on paper, but look at them struggling in the Liga - trust me it will carry over on to the Europ scene. Im not saying they cant win the competition but it all depends on when they face a 'real' team, it could be in the early stages of KO, or QF or maybe the SF but when they do face them they will need change their system which Rijkaard aint good at.

Zambrotta and Abidal best full back without a doubt?you are joking or something like this, they played vs players defensively weak, both of Grosso and Clerc is awful in defensive part of the game even though they are well on attack,Oddo,Maicon and Daniel Alves are much better than Zambrotta, maybe you dont watch Oddo lately, also considering he was a key factor for our last champions campaign,Barcelona played vs a team,Lyon their key players are injured,Cris,Fred,Coupet and however they sold half of their team this summer, the central pair is Bodmer and the other guy,one is slow and the another one is losing his place and his man.

Honestly i fear more from english teams this year than Barcelona or Real Madrid, dont forget we are still number 1 fave to win this coupe again,we won it without strikers,When we had Pato and Ronaldo together in attack,we will be the team to beat.

PS:Lahm is the best LB in the world without a doubt, abidal is good, solid in defense, thats all.

Barca was great yesterday. Are they THE favorites to win the CL?? I don't think so as I put them on the same level with the other top clubs.
Also, we need to stop thinking of Lyon as a European superpower as they are not that anymore. The were a superpower in the past few years but their team has slowly started to fade. There is no more Essien,no Diarra, no Malouda, no Abidal, no Tiago....and they didn't have Fred nor Cris yesterday. I think when all teams play their peak in only one game. Barcelona is the best, not only prensent time, even in last 20 years(maybe ever, due to the fast pace of modern soccer). They got the whole package to be in this position. unmatchable talent level, great team coordination, perfect 2-4 man group attack innovation, suffocating intensity of ball pressure upfront. and they easily take over the game under their rythm, that's the most impressive part, the ultimate index of your capacity.

I shall emphasise it's only IMO. Luck(and all factors unpredictable) always prevail in football.

ForeverMilan

I'm talking about a single squad, the maxium capacity exhibited only in one game(not concern it's ability to maintain that level in a large spend of time). The current group of Barca players is the best football history ever existed(my opinion only, objections welcome).Since timetravel doesn't exist, there is no way to prove it.I think they are a better team than Capello's 58 no-lose milan.

However we are the most successful club in last 20 years, no doubt about that.
