Just noticed we don't have a thread for the next round.

We've got a young, technically good & fast team in Arsenal.

Let's not forget though we have beaten better teams in the last few years.

Will R99 be fit? Can Pato be our link for goals? Anyone care to predict an eleven based on tactics, technique, etc?

My eleven -
Dida, Oddo, Nesta, KK, Janku, Pirlo, Ambro, Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Inzaghi.

Subs: Kalac, Maldini, Bonera, Emerson, Serginho, Pato, Gila.

If Pato delivers in short time, i'd consider him for the starting place as well. Only God knows how much we need a bit of speed and unpredictablity upfront. But Pato in means we have to change the whole playing system.

Maybe a 4-3-1-2 ? Will we be able to play Arsenal this way and uncover the midfield ? The last time we played 4-3-1-2 we were playing disgracefully...the midfield wasn't protecting at all

it will be a tough, and entertaining match, but i doubt Arsenal will win :D

the starting 11 i predict,

Dida, Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, Janku, Pirlo, Gattusso/Ambro, Seedorf, Kaka, Pato, Gila, in a 4-3-1-2 , but it all depends on Jan transfer window, and the injuries ;)

Pato IMO wont play as a single striker...so as Gio indicates, Carlo will change tactics to accommodate him, if he is fit, he or R99 (if he is fit..LOL) should both feature, one or the other partnering Gila up front.

If Carlo does this, then we will play 4-3-1-2....or 4-1-2-1-2as follows

Oddo...Nesta..Kala....Janku
...............Pirlo...............
Rino...................Seedorf
...............Kaka.............
........Pato(R99)..Gila.......

I have big doubts that we can beat Arsenal...they have a wonderful team, with pace and youth, that I believe are currently playing some of the best football in Europe.

To beat them, we will have to contain not only Fabregas, but Hleb, Rosicky, and Van Persie (if fit)....a daunting task for our aging team...

Experience, and tactics, for me will decide this, though luck will also play a role...

Cant say I feel very optimistic about this clash...but lets see what Pato and R99´s possible return can do for us attack wise...as for me, the clincher for us may very well be whether or not we can outscore them.

Oh, and happy new year to all at MM, and their friends and families!!

We can take them on, they should be afraid of us!

Pirlo-rino-Ambro-AKka'-Seedorf-Pato will play and can control every midfield in the world when are fit.

Our problems will be our fullbacks that are underacheaving comparing to the quality Milan needs.

And maybe even Ronaldo will be ready and then, with Il Phenomeno in the team, you know the rest...

Also, Eboue and Toure will be in African cup, right??

We shouldn't focus too heavily on one player (ex. Fabregas) because Rosicky or Hleb are equally capable of creating chances for Eduardo or Adebayor.

The African Cup is from January 20 till February 10. I think Milan-Arsenal play later in February while the second leg is in March.

CL 1st knockout round will be play in 19 - 20 February 2008 for the 1st leg and the 2nd leg will be in 4-11 March 2008.so gunners will be full squad (if Eboue,Toure and Song aren't injured :D).and for the 1st leg Arsenal will be a host in Emirates Stadium in 20 Ferbuary 2008.

Until February, many things can happen. Hopefully Pato and the fresh new players (if any) can adapt well with the team. Even if it turns out the opposite I'm still confident that we can qualify to the next stage. When it comes to knock-out stage no team knows it better than Carletto

I tink 4-3-1-2 can be very helpful, a potential solution to our current embarrassing form at home. Milan has been very successful with 4-3-1-2 for the past few seasons with Gila/Inzaghi + Sheva/Ronaldo (e.g., the year when we won Serie A we scored like 8x goals). Hopefully it'll work out.

Key is whether Pato is really what he is portrayed. Let's hope so...

Agreed. I think the only reason we play with 4-3-2-1 is that because we are forced to do so, considering Pippo and Gila is similar in style. With Pato and Ronnie ( if he recovers 100%) we'll have many options up front. The UCL final is within reach, let alone the 4th spot in serie A

Well Arsenal will be a tough opponent they overcome their weakness and now Arsenal is the best young team in Europe, don’t forget they have very good manager. Ac Milan have to play well and should score at the Emirates Stadium if they wanna proceed. As in the champion League away goals give you a huge advantage, Milan should go with two striker, the thing they didn’t do so these days because of obvious problems. If you will play pato in knockout round, it will be huge ask and I don’t think young kid could cope the pressure of champions League. 4-4-2 formation will worth with diamond shape midfield.
Dida
Oddo...Nesta..Kala....Janku
...............Pirlo...............
Gattusso..............Seedorf
...............Kaka.............
...Ronaldo… Gila/Inzaghi….
But if Ronaldo not fit they will go to the 4-1-2-1 .

Jeff

you may be right that Pato may not be able to handle the pressure, but with the rest of the squad filled with experiences, Pato will be in a much better position than anyone else in the world to fit into the system and get ready for the big pressure. We'll see how it goes...

I think that the worst manager ever knows that Milan against arsenal should and will play with three DCM Rinho, AMBRO and Pirlo.... this is the only way to cover their strong midfield with Cesc,Hleb and Roicky.....as i dont think Ebue can create much trouble on the right flank.

On the other hand, the question will be weather to play 1-2 or 2-1 upfront.....i think that 1 -2 will be the best as I see Seedorf usless against the most physical and the youngest team in CL, Kaka and Pato can do harm on the counterattacks cuz I think its hard to have possession against arsenal as they are masters of that.

Kaka, Pato maybe even Sergio(speed, flair) can be key factors in our victory, Arsenal play wide and very attacking....and we are fairly good against these tactics,so I`m bit optimistic in our chances....

if we have fit and in form ROnaldo puls Pato and Kaka the Arsenal will have a very diffecult time in dealing with our counter attacks.

Hey guys, I think there's something we should start worrying about...

Arsenals Eduardo is starting to score goals for fun... We know they play really good football, but never seem to have a finisher (after Henry left)...

But they seemed to have found a new no.9, and Mr. Eduardo is starting to hit form at the worst possible time for us... I hope he slows down by mid Feb...

Giovanni

Aren't they peaking too early ?

Tony75
07-01-2008, 05:52
Eduardo is only scoring vs 2nd div teams though. Stop Fabregas & Van Persie we can win. Others can be matched by our midfield & our attacking potential has been upgraded with Pato. If R99 could get 4 games out of the way b4 then, it could make things alot more interesting.

Stezagud
07-01-2008, 12:27
Tony is right about Eduardo, he is scoring for fun in the league cup and FACup but probably wont even play against Milan, his only league goals came against Everton and were total gifts, he finished them well enough but as long as Nesta doesnt let an 80 yard hoof bounce over his head like Jagielka did Milan will be ok ;)

Fabregas and Van Persie are 2 threats but Adebeyor and Hleb will have to be stopped too. Rosicky is quite easily neutralised though, considering his reputation he always seems to be on the fringes of games.

Jeff
07-01-2008, 12:44
In Winning Eleven, my milan is always tortued by Hleb on the left (my friend loved using Arsenal for their speed).

So I played 4-3-2-1 and he has no space to run, also thanks to Milan players' great positioning....

Oh I miss Winning...

Aren't they peaking too early ? Thanks for your previous compliment Gio, always good to see ur posts as well...exams over?

I was on vacation for the majority of Dec, so I didnt really follow up with MM as I should have..but I am back at work now, so I will be posting more often.

As to them peaking too early...hmm...dont think so...Wenger is no dullard, and will be ensuring that his team continue to develop as the season goes on...

I saw their reserve team (with Toure and Sagna being the only usual starters) have some difficulty overcoming lesser opposition in the FA Cup on the weekend...and they managed to win, mostly because of their excellent passing game.

My point: They are developing that winning mentality, they can win ugly, as well as pretty...they have teenagers playing like veterans...

Time will tell though, if they have actually peaked before the correct time..but personally I dont think so...

This will be the most fearfull I have been in the UCL for a long time...including our loss to Barca (even if that game was stolen, and we should have won the away leg)...and if any team is capable of putting bundle of goals past us, its them.

For me, they are playing the best football in Europe at the moment...they will be difficult opponents, and only the possible impact that the ravages of the African Nations Cup could create, can make me feel confident of facing them (ie without Toure, et al) and us advancing.

Agree with you, Wenger is no idiot, if anyone knows how to manage and get the best out of his player, I believe Wenger is about the best there is...

Right now, I've got a bad feeling about this game... but i hope my feeling with change after the Napoli game (a.k.a Pato's performance)

Stezagud
07-01-2008, 13:51
Peaking too early will only cost them if they get a fixture pile up, in th later rounds of the CL that would be a big possibility as English teams still in all 4 competitions in March/April end up playing far too much (thats why the treble was such an achievement ;) )

In February though there wont be a fixture pile up, and Arsenal use their reserve side in the early rounds of the FA Cup and League Cup anyway so most of the players are quite well rested.

I have just 10 exams to take before discussing the final thesys. Most of them are not that big (200 pages) so i hope within one year i will finish them. Then i will have to work at my final thesys.

In Italy we have many problems with employment, so if something goes wrong after the University i can still pick up a few moneys and come over there in Jamaica to open a new "Bar Italia" with football shown all week long... :sun:
I'm sure other members such as Jim can be intested in the project :sun:

Based on the Napoli game, Pato and even an unfit Ronaldo did something to the team.
There was something different about Milan in that game, there was a hunger and energy in the team that I haven't seen for ages.

More importantly, I saw smiles on the players faces. They were enjoying themselves.
What more could we ask for from them?

Arsenal are stuggling in the EPL, drawn the last 2 or 3 games and the goals have dried up.

But there are still 4 weeks until the game and in football, anything can happen.
We hadn't scored more than 3 goals at home this season and then we score five at home in one game, who would've thought.

In my opinion, Arsenal will probably be harder than any other team we could face up until the final or even in the final, if we make it that far.

I think we are in for 2 fantastic games.

I just saw that v. Persie is injured, "for some weeks". Even if he does feature, he might not be at full strength. He hasn't played a lot this year, but obviously he is a pacy winger which could cause our defense some problems, so it could be a big loss for them.

hany.Egypt

And he's a free kick master as well which could harm us alot, no doubt it good news for Milan (difenetely I was going to feel sorry for him if it was a seriouse injury).

Persie has been out for over 3 months and it hasn't affected the team as much as I thought it would have. The main reason for this is Eduardo, the guy has a lethal left foot and very good pace. I can't remember the last game where he didn't score or assist at least one goal With a record of 11 goals in 14 appearances who would miss Persie? To me if Milan had to keep an eye on a player it would be Eduardo. Then again Adebayor has also improved this season and is excellent in the air, so the Milan defense will have to mark him really tight. The biggest problem for Milan is the formation - we all saw what they're capable of when Ka-Pa-Ro are on show but with this formation they can either play Gattuso or Ambro. If they decide to leave either one of them out then I feel it will open up the midfield which is exactly what Arsenal want.

The problem Arsenal have is freekicks as only Persie is the FK taker, however they have hired Beckham - the daddy of Fk takers and he's teaching them how to take them lol

jtelly
21-01-2008, 21:33
Eduardo has scored lots of goals against second-tier teams. I think Milan's defense can cope against him. Not to say that he isn't dangerous, but I'd be much more afraid of a full v. persie than Eduardo. I agree with you on Adebayor, I actually at one point thought of him as an option for Milan because he is HUGE, can control the ball and hold it up, let the play develop. I'm much more concerned about him. I think he could get Gattuso into card trouble quite quickly.

kawiki
21-01-2008, 22:53
I agree, adebayor has been developing much recently, but he doesn't have the ability to make a cracker shot (yet) unlike our forwards. But RvP can, that's why he's, when he's fit, is very dangerous.

IMO, the essence of their game is fluid passing with cesc, rosicky and hleb controlling the midfield. if we can put pressure on those three then we'll be able to atleast withheld their movement

The way I see it, the arsenal full back loves to overlap so much. So I hope we can exploit those area

jtelly
22-01-2008, 19:43
Yes, very good analysis Kawiki. I definitely agree that by shutting the midfield 3 down, we can disrupt their style of play.
one note on adebayor and his shot, did you see his goal in the carling cup today-yowza!

Second tier teams? maybe but he's pretty strong in the CL because it always takes longer to adjust to the PL, this is the reason he's had a big impactwith the National Team. You do have a point about Persie however I feel when he does return he wont be match fit and that's the reason most likely it will have to be Eduardo upfront with Adebayor (maybe introducing persie after half time?). Ade has improved a lot over the past year or so but Milan should be able to keep him under control as long as they mark him tight, the defense should also notice that he doesn't use his left foot as much so everything he brings it back on to his right foot.

Adebayor does have power as you mentioned when talking about the goal today, it was similiar to the goal he scored against them in the league which was another cracker. All in all tonight has been a game to forget for all Arsenal fans but credit due to Spurs as they kept on coming and good luck to them in the final.

mrki
26-01-2008, 09:29
I have some hopes in Ronaldo beying much fitter for that game then he is now and he is always dangerous even with 75 % fitness.

The thing that worries me isthat Oddo is horrible and we lack runs by Bonera to spread Pirlo's play. Also ,mMarek hasnt played for a while and who knows in which kind of a form he will be.

Pirlo-Rino-Ambro-Seedorf-KAka' can dominate any midfield, I only hope fullbacks and Dida can get their things together for Emirates stadion. In San Siro we never failed to win in knock out rounds of CL. In fact, Milan NEVER failed to qualify when the 2nd leg was in SS. Never in 50 years.

Mrki dude you got issues, everything you said has been more or less your opinion. To me whatever you said has been a joke and thats all, you should look up to the 'higher status' members at Milanmania and Jeff has clearly put you in your place.

You should learn to respect other fans like you want to be respected yourself, be it a 'great' 'good' or a 'small' club - a club is a club.

This game will still be a cracker, Milan haven't played this type of opposition before.

mrki
26-01-2008, 12:47
I also think what two of you said is a complete joke and it comes from defending an english club and lack of football reality ( read: results ). But lets stop at those last posts. I offer peace and a future to show how Arsenal and Milan will play those games. I dont want to put you " in your place"( as I am, to you, a man who knows noly word"history" and a lunatic from balkans who hates england sa one england poster insulted me here before) right now, as you said to me. You showed you are true "gentleman". Older posters simply dont care about posts like "arsenal is as big as Milan", but to me it hurts my eyes.

In te post above yours I said milan has some problems but if we can get it right we can dominate every team in Europe, which has been proven I think. Or you thhink it hasnt? It will be a cracker for sure, Im not doubting that.

I'm not trying to be harsh on you what so ever and in a kind way I don't understand your English one bit, not implying that mine is perfect.

You clearly don't like England and people from here as you think all we do is drink beer and throw abuse at everyone. Just to end this I agree with whatever you say, England has never won a World Cup and doesn't contain a club which has won the CL.

From now on lets just keep it strictly for the game.

Arsenal had another half decent game today and for me Adebayor was MOM, the upfront partnership is working excellent with Eduardo (theres me thinking Croatians were rubbish at football) this guy certainly knows how to dribble, shoot and pass.

we will end the discussio by me saying that this was taken out of context and this is not my oppinion. When I wrote this I was cinical towards a poster that said I only know hord "history" and behave like L'pool fans who talk the same thing all hte time. And dont be sarcastic in that bad tune as I didnt say the things above. I confessed what had been done, but I didnt confess Mialn and Arsenal are equal clubs. Assuming we have a full squad, will Ancelotti opt for the xmas tree with Inzaghi or Gila upfront in the away game? Or will he take the aggressive approach and play Ronaldo and Pato upfront?

Defensively, I reckon Bonera will play at right-back in both games in order to deal with Clichy and Rosicky on Arsenal's left side. Oddo will not be able to contain them imo.

Based on Kaladze's recent performances, I am worried about him against Arsenal.

Ivory Coast's Toure doubtful for quarter-final
TAKORADI, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Kolo Toure is doubtful for Ivory Coast's African Nations Cup quarter-final against Guinea because of the groin injury that forced him to miss Tuesday's group match, coach Gerard Gili said on Wednesday.
The Arsenal defender injured his groin last week in a 4-1 demolition of Benin and had to pull out of the Mali game, which the Elephants won 3-0 on Tuesday.
"Kolo is now back in the squad," Gili told a news conference at the team's hotel in Takoradi.
"He has trained with the others today but had specific exercises to do. We'll know better later this week if he is fit to play."
If he is not fit, Toure would be replaced by Benfica's Marc Zoro, who deputised against Mali.

ancelloti rarely play offensive. I think he likes to play defensively, first to dominate the midfield. So I think he will play the christmas formation, with gattuso and ambro to stop cesc, bonera to mark rosicky, maldini to mark hleb, although i would like to see maldini as central defender and kaladze as fullback.

for the solo striker, I think he will put pato in. but I doubt he can skin toure and gallas like inzaghi would...

but it would be interesting if we put offensive display with Ka Pa Ro upfront, ambro + gattuso + pirlo in midfield, oddo + janku as fullback and nesta + maldini in defence.

Let them score as many as they like as long as we can outscore them :5guitar:
afterall we're going to play at emirates first so away goal is crucial...

arsenal is a great team....veryy verry fast on the counter attack and adebayor we have to stop him ..and they have one thing that we miss...GOOD CROSSING....sagna and diaby push up alot giving their midfield more space to attack ....we better be ready to stop the crosses or adebayor will get on the end of em everytime..

Wenger has stated Kolo will be out for 7/8 days, so if Ivory Coast were to progress in to the Semi's then most definatly Kolo will be available unless there is a reoccurrence. Also it looks like Persie will be out for at least another 2/3 weeks which I think rules him out for the Milan game.

Can't believe Chelsea and Pool both get mickey mouse teams in the FA Cup, whilst both United and Arsenal have to play each other a few days before their CL games. Reason I say this be because if it was some minor team then both teams could play the reserve sides but in such a big game it will have to be at least half of the first team.

mrki

We had some luck there with the FA cup draw... Arsenal will most likely play full squad against United as FA cup in an important event in England.

I wish ronaldo can be fit for 60 min of good football, and also Marek and Oddo can come back to some form as Arsenal is extremly dangerous on the flanks with speed double passes on the flanks. Also, with Maldini looking ok even on the Lb, I dont see any reason why he, at this moment not injured and quite fit, cant play Cb alongside NEsta. Kaladze is in quite bad shape and Paolo could paly CB nicely as always. I hope this will be our team in Emirates.

I dont see Pippo being phisically ready for the game, aldough he started working well in Milanello. And Pato is too young for these games. With Ronaldo-KAka'-Seedorf- Pirlo we can create well. It would be a HUGR mistake just to defend against Arsenal.

How about this? -->

Kalac

Oddo - Nesta - Maldini - Jankulovski

Gattuso - Pirlo - Ambrosini

Seedorf - Kaka

Inzaghi

I doubt that even as defensive as Carlo is, that he will be stupid enough to try to go to Arsenal to defend.

Outscoring them for me, seems the best bet.

i am just waiting for this game... i have a lot of arsenal frenz and i am waiting to collect their money... Arsenal dont have the quality and experience to beat us over two legs... they play an open game which is best for our attackers... it will be a repeat of last years semi vs ManU.

I think Carlo will pack the midfield up in the first game, making a lot of possession and trying to keep Arsenal out of the game. He will try to snick a goal. I expect a match like the first Utd- Milan (2004-05).

At the San Siro, the music will be totally different. A Requiem for Arsenal will be sung as the Curva will roar his first chants, and the young, talented but less experienced Arsenal guys will find very hard to cope with the atmosphere down there. This game will be played more openly.

I do hope to attend the second game.

Gattuso Out Of Arsenal Clash

AC Milan have received a huge blow after Gennaro Gattuso was ruled out for around 50 days with injury, meaning that he will miss both legs of the Champions League tie with Arsenal.
Gattuso Out Of Arsenal Clash
zoom - galleria
Gattuso has picked up a serious muscle strain and has immediately been withdrawn from the Milan squad set to travel to Florence for this Sunday’s crucial trip to Fiorentina.

The 30-year-old hardman had struggled at times this season for form, but it seemed as though he was returning to something near his very best after an improved performance against Genoa last weekend, and a rampaging display in the midweek win at Reggina.
Gattuso will also miss the Serie A matches with Siena, Parma, Livorno, Palermo, Catania, Lazio and Empoli.

If estimates are correct he should return in time for the week 28 trip to the Stadio Olimpico to face Roma.

Most worrying for Milan will be his absence from the Champions League knockout tie with Arsenal. The first leg in London is on February 20, with the return on March 4.

Gattuso will also naturally be ruled out of Italy’s international friendly with Portugal in Zurich next week.

The ex-Rangers man is a notoriously fast healer and Milan fans will be hoping for a miraculous recovery in time for the super-clash with Arsenal.

Not sure how reliable the above source is but I'm upset at the fact that he's injured, I'm hoping he's fully fit for both legs because I want the full teams out.

The CL-squad for the rest of the season:

Dida, Kalac, Fiori.

Cafu, Maldini, Kaladze, Nesta, Simic, Jankulovski, Favalli, Bonera, Darmian, Oddo;

Emerson, Gattuso, Seedorf, Gourcuff, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Brocchi;

Inzaghi, Gilardino, Kakà, Ronaldo, Pato.

Paloschi has been added to the B-list.

Pato and Paloschi have been added, while Serginho and Willy Aubameyang have been removed.

Arsenal play an attacking open game at home, leaving considerable space behind the midfield. Toure-Gallas is a good partnership, but Flamini is not so great. I think we should use an attacking line-up in London, especially if Ronaldo is available. I don't think Arsenal could handle the movement and skill of Ka-Pa-Ro, whereas using only Pippo up front, Toure and Gallas should deal with him quite easily.

Giovanni
01-02-2008, 16:06
Ka-Pa-Ro would expose the midfield too much. Forget it. Carlo will play a wise match, esp in London, with the Christmas Tree upfront, and one lonely striker. I think this striker will be Pippo.

Rico

I think the tactic that will be applied for the match versus Arsenal will be sorta simular to the one that was used at Old Trafford that ended 3-2 for Man United.

KaPaRo will be exactly what Arsenal would want and I doubt Carlo shall take the risk.

On the other hand there's a chance Wenger could change the formation to 4-5-1 which leaves Ade up front on his own.

jawad
01-02-2008, 17:17
well, with gatusso out of the first leg, mb the second also, i'm afraid carlo would have to field emerson, i do believe brocchi is useless, but even so he is still considered as a better option than emerson, who i never witness doing much in games, at least brocchi is trying, anyway i think pato should be there, regardless of the pressure, we need someone quick next to kaka, to make a fuss up front, and if inzaghi is fit to play he should be there to use that fuss and kill them with his killer habbit, i do believe we can go though out of this from the experience factor, but we should not make mistakes, specially at london, because i believe they will be afraid of us more than we are afraid of them, but still any mistake could give them huge confidence that will kill us in spot.

Hoping for the best, FORZA MILAN.

Arsenal will also play 4-5-1, im sure. My only worry is that Emrson will be simplay too slow while Rino can catch ny Arsenal player and actually any player he wants... you know Rino :)

With Emerson, AMbro, Pirlo, Seedorf, inzaghi maybe we'll be to slow.

I really doubt this statement. :)

You know what I mean, if those players are on the pitch then on the defensive side Milan can't play both Rino and Ambro unless they drop Seedorf which is highly unlikely as he's immense, especially in Europe.

Any team that fails to contain the midfield will struggle no doubt.

Milan could play Kaparo with Ambro/Seedorf Pirlo Gattuso in San Siro especially if Milan needed to score to go through to the next round.

The biggest obstacle to see Kaparo against Arsenal is Ronaldo's fitness situation IMO.

I dont think so, Gila is not going to play that first leg. Carlo will never trust him with that.

I think the best ption is to play Brochi Pirlo Ambro.... I think brochi can compensate Rinhos absence boetter than Emerson, due to his speed and spirit,

Playing Ambro and Emerson against Cesc,Hleb and Rosicky is equal to suicide...

I under to circumstance want Gilardino in this match. Imagine this:

We're down 2-0. There is 10 minutes to go of the match. Gilardino gets a 100% chance and wastes it.

I would be frustratated beyond recognizion that Inzaghi wasn't there in the lineup instead to score the goal that might mean getting into the quarterfinals where it really snows.

IMHO. :)

:D

But think about it: Pato and Kaka both have 100% and they miss it in the first 80 minutes. Hey, it happened.

There is simply no reason to believe the myth that Gilardino misses 100% chance. As a matter of fact, Inzaghi missed these chances in the most horrible way too. I have no stats on who misses these '100%' chances, but I'm not sure if the argument against Gilardino that he always misses 100% chance is a valid one.

In fact, Pato has missed damn a lot of chances, but gosh he created most of them so you can't complain :)

What we can say about Gila's weakness is that he is not decisive in most games; he is slow; he can't dribble, but I still believe that he can score well.

And trust me: I support Gilardino not because he is handsome (as some people argue here), but because he has shown, both in Parma and in Milan, that he can score. (Don't get me started about why he is not considered a top scoring player in his first season at Milan. I have explained numerous time why he didn't get over 20 goals in his first season and score less than Shevchenko.)

Anyway, back to the topic... J

mrki

Dont want to argue Jeff, but there is no comparism between Pippo and Gila. Pipposcored some of the most decisive goals I've ever seen that someone scored for Milan. And not once but constantly. Somehow, when things get thight, Pippo comes in and scored, somehow...no one actually knows how :)

He misses also a lot, but Pippo is now 34, I have a feeling some of you have forgoten how Inzaghi played when he was 5 years youinger? he was 20 times better then Gila now! Faster, better ball control, better shot and was also in the right place just like he is now. I would puit my trust in Pippo against Arsenal is Ronaldo is not fit. If Roonia is fit for 60 min, play him at full tempo for one hour and then introduce Inzaghi, or both Pippo and PAto, as the result is suggesting. Pippo is the man for CL matches, somehow :)

I agree with you totally that Pippo are definitely more decisive and influential; but that doesn't excuse him (or anyone) by saying that you can then make a 100% missed chance.

You see my logic? If one is to complain that a striker misses a 100% chance, then we must say that that striker misses more 100% chance than the rest of the strikers. The fact that Inzaghi scores at the most decisive doesn't make me less susceptible to the fact that he misses 100% chance. For yet another example, you can say that Van Nistrolooy scores 8 goals and top scorer of CL the season before, but does it mean that he won't miss easy chances? No; just that he turns out to be the person who has managed to score that many goals, that year.

I share with Kaka's concern that the expectation on Pato is still too high. Granted, he scored two goals against Genoa and that's wonderful, but he in fact has so many easy chances that he didn't manage to score. Yet people are praising for Pato like crazy. There is no doubt about Pato's ability, but how our perception about Pato, Inzaghi, and Gilardino is distorted by chance event is completely awful and unjustified.

An example will be Gilardino's two decisive away goal against Udinese and recently Reggina. Yet we see no praise for Gilardino like the way people praise about Pato. Tell me: Is this justified?

I'm not putting a defense case here for Gilardino, as there is no need to. All I'm saying is that Milan fans are simply finding a scapegoat for Milan's awful performance in Serie A, and two players are blamed: Dida and Gilardino. This results in a self-serving bias in which Dida will only make more mistakes and Gilardino will continue to play like he doesn't know how to play football. This comes back to my point earlier that fans are equally repsonsible for Dida's and Gila's poor performance. It's a negative spiral that only makes the player play worse and worse.

Back to the point: if there are players who don't play well; criticize why he doesn't play well. If Milan lost and you want to find an individual to blame, that's simply ridiculous. More ridiculous, perhaps, is the fact that some Milan fans are distorting information in such a way that will suit their perceptions of the players.

So my stand for Gilardino and Dida? I still maintain that Dida is first class, that he should be preferred over Kalac. Though I must admit, if we can replace DIda with another high potential player, I would definitely go for it.

Gilardino is a kid who can score but without proper support he won't. He is no Shevchenko, Inzaghi or whatsoever; but if you play a 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2 I am a lot more optimsitic about his chances of scoring. Yet I maintain that he still needs to prove himself by DOING it. Being capable and actually dooing is different. He has proven his capability before, but now he needs to deliver.

Excellent game today and I can't tell who deserves the Man of the match award either Ade or Eduardo. Adebayor scored two easy goals and Eduardo scored a beautiful spectacular (honestly you should watch it.) These two are complimenting each other very well and have made the non-presence of van perise less felt.

The only worrying thing is that Adebayor never scores in Europe and at the same time Eduardo hasn't got much experience in Europe.

1. Pato is good. Chances only come your way if you create it. Pato definitely is everywhere and making it difficult for people to mark him. Pippo also. Gila lack this ability to create openings so he need to play with players who can. He did well when playing with ronaldo last season. I believe he can do the same with Pato.

2. Dida has made too many mistakes and Kalac has played too well recently. I will put Kalac in if nothing changes. How old already is Dida? Does he still need to be pampered and coaxed like a kid? If he make a mistake, he better learn how to buck up and not do it again, not making it game after game. He has become so unstable nowadays, it sadden me to see a keeper whom i consider the best in the world a few years back doing so poorly now.

MArek is also not injured anymore and I assume he'll take LB position, with Kaladze/Nesta or Paolo/ Nesta pairing in the middle.

Im also glad that Sagna in a RB and he will not play against Oddo but against Ambro and MArek, which is a relief :)

Gattuso is injured now, but Galliani today said he can be ready for next sunday already, and he'll be ready for Arsenal 100% as it looks now. We really need Rino, he can close every single player in the world, and we specially need him against Arsenal becouse of his speed in the tackles.

I agree about Marek. We canm play him only if he plays at least two games before Arsenal. Livorno and PArma for example. then he will be 100% ready becouse in Milanello you dont get called up for a game if you are not ready, no injury risks are ever taken in Milan.

If we play Maldini on the left we will have some serious problems down that side, my fingers are crossed for Marek to be ready. He was listed for Fiorentina, maybe he can even start against Siena, that would be nice.

And to an Arsenal fan: showe some respect towards european champions man... We never said it will be an easy game, its just that on one is a favorite against Milan in CL. It has been proven.

lol theres a difference between non-presence and non-existence.

Persie has been out since October and there's no Arsenal fan that would sell him to any team because he can be very influential. Persie is doubtful for the Milan game as Wenger has stated that he won't rush him back this time, just before the Milan game Arsenal play United and I do hope that Wenger doesn't get tempted in to playing him in that game.

Cescvanpersie dude chill, I understand that you're passionate about being a Gooner but that is no reason to show lack of respect to your opposition. I can assure you that Arsenal will always be the under dogs in this tie because Milan are monsters in Europe - no team comes close. Milan a team with only half the players would still be capable of beating any team in the world, you should understand that and don't ever underestimate them. Trust me, I've seen it all I saw Bhoys, Mancs and Scousers join last year and just as they came they went, so know what your dealing with here.

On the game I don't think Milan will rush Gattuso back in, IMO Gattuso won't be match fit for the first leg but should be ok for the second leg. I'm still in the grey over Pato as different sources say he'll be fit for Arsenal and others saying he won't. I hope both teams are fully fit because this is one game that will be crazy.

No,no...again me :9 We dont want a spectacular and crazy game with 1000 shots. We are Milan, we want a boring game with 3 corners form Arsenal and 2 from Milan. With post being hit by Adebayor and Milan winning it 0:1 after poor performance... then the whole Europe will see we are again in the game for CL trophy :D

Seriously, our main duty will be to slow the tempo and pass the time away. With Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka and Pippo/ Ronaldo / PAto create something as usual. If we start running like some EPL team we are lost. But Milan is smarter than that, we need to control the midfield and that is why Im certain Gattuso will be back. Kaka And Pato Available For Arsenal Game

Milan doctor Jean Pierre Meersseman has brought good news. He expressed his optimism over the recovery of both Riccardo Kaka and Alexandre Pato for the first leg of the Champions League game against Arsenal...

Meersseman spoke in particular about Pato, who had worried the Milan hierarchy particularly worried.

"Today he is much better," reassured the Rossoneri's doctor. "Until yesterday he was walking with the help of the crutches, but now he manages to walk without feeling pain.

"We are confident with regards to his recovery time," he continued. "Until yesterday we thought he would need two or three weeks, but now I believe that within two weeks he is going to be ready for the game against Arsenal."

Meersseman also spoke positively about the possibility that Kaka and Gattuso will make the London trip, lessening the Rossoneris' injury woes significantly.

It funny because on some days the banks, usually packed with distinctive people, get take by storm by a mob of ultras and dodgy people hungry to get a ticket. :sun:

I got pretty decent sits. Second green tier, section 230 --> http://www.acmilan.com/InfoPage.aspx?id=52423

20 € is a bargain for such a game.

The game is approaching fast.. It will be in 1 week from now. So far we got Pato/Gattuso/Kaka/Ronaldo struggling with injuries and a not-so fit Seedorf. Let's re-evaluate them in a week and hope for the best.

My only wish for this game is that we do not play Gilardino as he is the most useless of all our strikers in these big games. I say start with Pato and Pippo and bring on Ronaldo. I think we should go for two strikers at the London game but I'm pretty sure Ancelotti would rather go for the x-mas tree and play Pippo up front..That would be a shame as Pato's pace could do us so much good in a game like this. Ronaldo can come on for Pippo in the last 30 minutes.

Damn how I wish we had a fully fit Ronaldo as he would do wonders for us. If Ronaldo recovers and is more match fit I would start him over Pippo, but right now I wouldn't.

I know there's a couple of games before it, but here is what I would do on that day if everyone's injury is healed according to plan.

------------------------- KALAC -----------------------------

ODDO --------- NESTA ------------ MALDINI ----- JANKULOVSKI

GATTUSO ----------------- PIRLO ------------------- SEEDORF

------------------------ KAKA --------------------------------

------------- PATO ----------------------- RONALDO ----------

However it most likely that Ronaldo will not be match fit so I'll start Pippo and bring on Ronnie as a sub. Ambrosini can be an important weapon towards the end, and unfortunately we do not have our Serginho anymore. I just hope we keep Gila and Dida on the bench for this one.

Considering Carlo's personality, I assure you it's not gonna happen, Ambro or Emerson will start in London if Gattuso is fit or both of them if he is injured, Pato and Gourcuff, IMO could be very useful as well, but , once more, Carlo won't use them probably only Pato, any way I will be more than just happy with any formation so long as it can get the right result in London.

Good luck for Milan, we will be really in serious need for it, best wishes for all of Gattuso, Kaka and Pato hope they will be fit before the match and to Nesta whome I still don't know why he was subed last match? and for Kalac/Dida in stopping Arsenal, and for or Roanaldo to keep him self fit.
Forza Milan the champions of Europe.

I wish you can fulfill your dream the sooner possible. Good luck!
The first impression inside San Siro is a sense of alienation. You are in the place you've seen hundred of times on tv. Pictures can't give the idea of the full impact of the view. Especially on afternoon games, the colours are so vivid. They seem taken from a painting of Van Gogh.

If you have the chance to attend a CL game, the weirdest sensation is that the world is there, watching. People talks dozens of different languages, like a new Babel. It's weird, and it'd be poetry worthy material.

Hope i've given you a little appetizer.

San Siro actually looks a lot smaler once when you take your place at the stands somewhere. You have a feeling that there is now way 85 000 people can be there. But once you hear the curva sing... you get the point :)

I witnessed Milan - Inter ( 3:4 ), and the last 5 minutes were so loud I couldnt believe it. I was swearing in croatian and some italians were looking strangely at me :) Then we lost and the whole stadium ( as Milan was houst ) went: Milan, Milan! !! it was a magical night.

Now we will take Arsenal in the same enviroment and Pippo will make his magic :)

Well, impossible is nothing. :D

I know there are Inzaghi, Pato, Gila infront of him. But with Ronaldo's injury, Gila's poor play in CL, I think there is chance for him. Pato could play in London but maybe Carlo could be not so hurry to put Pato in that game. IMO Paloschi plays better than Gila lately, so maybe Palo has his chance in Emirates even for couple of minutes. Or as I said before, at least in San Siro.

It's just my dream and to dream is not a wrong thing. Even the chane is 1/1000000, it means my dream still has chance to happen. :D

Just let's wait both games, in London and Milan and the important thing is still that Milan qualify to the next round.

Lets Paloschi rest and play some other Serie A game. We have Pato, count on him and the Super Pippo.

Yeah, I absolutely agree with you but if we need a striker for CL, we can count Palo, IMO. :D

Nothing wrong with dreaming Sire, I agree. But I doubt Carlo is willing to risk playing the little one against Arsenal and he has said that the boys needs some growing up to do. Milan's experience will be the edge that can help us qualify over Arsenal's young and sprightly players. Pato is young too, but he has spent more time in top flight football than Paloschi and so has Gila.

But he's gotta start SOMEWHERE you'll say, and I agree with that too...but again, I say Carlo's not going to risk youth over experience (how many times have I said this now). Yoann is another I'd like to see against Arsenal, but we all know that's a bigger dream than the one your currently nurturing Sire.

Can't wait for so many things like:

- Maldinii leading and shouting at the players and how he always points and directs players and you can see that ever-so-shiny captain arms band...

- Nesta's CLASS of how he makes defending such a joy to watch.. he is like the Ronaldinho of defending!
-
Kaladze? Nah i can wait for that

- Oddo's beautiful tackles that he makes...he slides for like 5 metres, it looks so cool...

- LALALALALA ANDREA PIRLO LALALALALAL he is getting praise from every one recently.. after Zidane i haven't seen such a complete and perfect midfielder.. he is in phenomenal form, i wish he keeps it up.. let's hope he improves his freekicks for this game!!

- CLAARENCE CLAARENCE SEDORF SEEEDORF- becomes as good as any of the legends who played this beautiful game on these wonderful CL nights..the way he holds the ball and shields it, i dont see many players who are better than him in doing this.. he was even better than our Rui Costa in this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbZtU3ZNHrU

- Gila ? yea yea forza gila whatever

- i dont think words can describe this incredibly UNTALENTED player.. this guy has no skills what so ever yet he is the highest scorer of all time in European competitions.. he plays with heart and determination like other.. he score goals with every part of his body whether he intends to or not..... I attended the match too and i totally confirm what you've been told. That game is the best game i've been to. In Second Orange even grannies seemed on drugs that night.

PS. Pato will start from the bench, according to the latest i've heard.

15-02-2008, 17:13
Pato from the bench was expected. I expect Carlo to use same trick we used last year: play Inzaghi untill he runs out of fuel, for like 70 minutes. Pippo will play at 100% and move the best he can and then Pato will come on. Only thing that we need by then is to have a positive result, as then Pato will have the space he needs.

BUT - be carefull people, we need to keep our fingers crossed not to see Pippo starting the game at Parma tommowor as then it may be Gila who will start at London... aldough that would be jst too much. I mean ,we actually want to score :)
------------------------------------------------------

Rino-Ambro-Pirlo are in GREAT shape right now, especially seeing Pirlo play like this and Ambro improving his game attacking wise. Only concern in the kind of shape Seedorf will be in. We need Calrence from Munchen and from United games on wednesday. Toure, Gallas, Sagna and Clichy are not players Seedorf cant play againstm, aldough Sagna is extremly fdast player so I except Kaka' to play more on Clichy side to pass the player and Seedorf holding his position with Sagna and combining with Marek. We'll see, but I cant wait.

It will be one of those nights when you sit at your room aLONE and just scream at the TV :) And then the man who cant run fast, cant jump, cant head very well, cant dribble, cant shoot strong and is 34 scores becouse he is the smartest forward in the world and whole football europe that knows "everythin gabout attacking" says: how is that possible?? Well...brains my friends, brains. Pippo has the best positioning I've ever seen, and people are never gonna say this as they dont see it or they envy Milan and Pippo Inzaghi...

Bobby Pires..always a legend.

From a fan of both of Arsenal and Milan I can honestly say that Arsenal will get killed off. When the draw happened Arsenal were flying high and I felt they had a half chance of winning Milan but things have spiraled downhill. It's not only Arsenal but Milan have also been affected by injuries but with Milan most of not all of the team are experienced. If the player at Arsenal get injured, in come the youngster and they can't handle the pressure.

Everyone saw what Arsenal done yesterday without the fullbacks, these are the same fullbacks that will be out of the CL clash. For me Milan all the way.

Yeah both are out, Sagna has personal problems and Clichy through injury.

Not to add Rosicky, Van Persie etc to the list. I just hope it doesn't affect the league because I remember last season Arsenal went out of 3 competitions in 10 days. I couldn't care less about the CL, FA Cup or the league cup as long as they win the Premiership.

IMO Inzaghi should only be used in Europe and should not have featured against Parma.

against ManU, arsenal used both hoyte and armand traore instead of sagna and clichy at right and left flank respectively. i saw that hoyte as right fullback in many times was fooled by nani. ManU 2nd goal created by Nani after spitted hoyte out and freely cross to fletcher in central.
ManU 1st goal by Rooney's header also caused by miss anticipation from Hoyte

armand traore also played awful against ManU. ManU 4th goal by Fletcher free header from far post of Lehmann goal also becaused he was unmarked by traore

It means easier for both janku and oddo to attack from wing than when arsenal have their regular pairing fullback

Arsenal will get knocked back hard with both the full backs out, these are the players that create everything.

Eboue is one of the worst players ever to grace the Arsenal shirt and the quicker he leaves it would be better for the team, he's on a red but should be ok for the CL game as it doesn't affect it in Europe.

4-4-2? Yeah rosicky was in the line up with Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini, and Rosciky in the middle and Edu and Dudu upfront. To be honest Mrki the injury list wont stop at Bacary, Clichy, Persie and Rosicky - believe me there are more player who are out.

A player that has been lost all season is Gilberto Silva, if he plays Arsenal will play with 10 men.

against ManU, arsenal used both hoyte and armand traore instead of sagna and clichy at right and left flank respectively. i saw that hoyte as right fullback in many times was fooled by nani. ManU 2nd goal created by Nani after spitted hoyte out and freely cross to fletcher in central.

Not taking anything away from United as they taught Arsenal a lesson, but 3 of the goals were gifted by the full backs. Traore is a half decent player but you can't expect him to perform on the big stage (this is United we're talking about) - hoyte is just plain awful I don't even know what he was doing for most of the game.

It does depend on what team wenger puts out as he came out and said many times that he will concentrate on the PL and CL - but to me the CL is all but gone.

Eboue is one of the worst players ever to grace the Arsenal shirt and the quicker he leaves it would be better for the team, he's on a red but should be ok for the CL game as it doesn't affect it in Europe.

This season wenger always put eboue in right midfield. And IMO, he played worse than last season when wenger put him as right fullback. Last season (after Lauren Etama Mayer era as arsenal right fullback) Eboue played very good as right fullback.
But early this season Sagna amazingly rise up as the owner of right fullback. So fast, powerful and full calculated :D

Dont forget for Arsenal left midfielder Diaby. His long shot is great.
So far this season, Arsenal is another team along with Milan that i watched mostly

Bad news: Kalac dislocated a finger today in training and they'll be evaluating his condition over the next few days to see if he can play against Arsenal.

Carlo Ancelotti admits Alexandre Pato is a doubt to face Arsenal, while he explains how Nelson Dida managed to get injured on the bench.

Kaka made his comeback in the 0-0 draw with Parma this evening, but Clarence Seedorf and Pato did not make the trip and are at risk for the Champions League.

“Seedorf will be there, I am certain, but if we do recover Pato in time then it will have to be at the last minute,” said the Coach.

Arsenal were crushed 4-0 by Manchester United in the FA Cup today and Ancelotti was impressed.

“That is quite a surprising result, but also a lovely one for me. I hope it will be the same on Wednesday night.”

Zeljko Kalac’s fine form has earned him the gloves, but he would be there anyway as Dida sustained a freak injury at the Stadio Tardini.

“Dida’s back seized up and it is quite a serious problem.” The Brazilian was stretchered off at half-time after finding he couldn’t get up off the bench.

The 0-0 draw comes just days after a 1-1 result against little Livorno, dropping precious points in the race for a Champions League place.

“In the first half we struggled under Parma’s tempo, in the second played better and could have won it.

“We are in fourth place right now and have achieved our target of being in the top four when the Champions League kicked off again, even if Fiorentina have a game in hand.”

If the Viola pick up a point against Catania on Sunday, they’ll leave Milan in fifth.

Dida's injury was surrealistic. He injured himself while sitting on the bench. I've heard in Japan he injured himself while bent over to push the lifter's button. No jokes. He has some serious problem on his backside.

I am 100% sure this will be our line up

Lehmann

Sagna

Fabregas
Hleb
Rosicky

Eduardo
Adebayor

Mrki Wenger always uses Hleb, Rosicky, Fabregas and Flaminim. The only player he might not use is Eduardo but I feel Arsene knows to win the tie Arsenal will have to win at Ashburton Grove and play for a draw at the San Siro.

Arsenal got into the final a few years back playing defensive with a 451 formation, IMHO it all depends on the first tie if Arsenal get a win then they will play the 451 formation at the san siro with Ade upfront. If Arsenal draw or lose then it will definitely be a 442 at the san siro.

The strongest line up has always been Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy, Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini, Rosicky, Persie and Adebayor. However Eduardo has taken Persies place.

Agree. As many arsenal matches I've seen, both Clichy and Sagna are much better than Armand Traore & Hoyte.

Putting Traore and Hoyte against United was suicidal from the very start, IMO Wenger WILL start with Ade and Eduardo upfront. Eduardo didn't have an impact on the United game because he was used out of position, everytime he's been put on the win he looks lost.

Eduardo is an excellent player always improving with game after game, I think he might cause a few problems in Europe just like he done on the international level. Italian defense is very difficult to break down but remember what Eduardo done to italy?

No way Persie will be fit in time, as long as Persie is fit to play some part during the end of the season I'm happy.

I think the following line up is the most likeliest:

Almunia / Lehmann (Depending on fitness)

Clichy----------Gallas--Toure---------Sagna (Not sure about the fullbacks)

Hleb---------Flamini----Cesc--------Rosicky/Eboue

Ade -----Eduardo

I honestly can't see Arsene playing a 451

IMO, much easier for Milan to counter attack if wenger play with adebayor-edu (4-4-2) since 1st minute. There's space for Kaka to accelerate from the middle straight to infront of gallas & toure.

And personally, I hope wenger will play with both edu & adebayor while Milan will play patiently with 4-3-2-1 pattern looking for arsenal mistakes and absence in midfield

I highly doubt wenger will play 4 4 2, his no stupid he knows that is like a suicide against Milan, with only one defensive minded player(Flamini)you can not stop the best midfield in the world. U can stop kaka but not seedorf and pirlo.

And wenger knows that in 2005 he went all the way to final with 4 5 1, much more defensive tactics than ours. And he knows thats the tactics it wins CL.

Hey lets place a bet Cescvanpersie? I call for Wenger to play 4-5-1 and you call it 4-4-2. ok? Who ever wing wears opponents sign on his avatar untill the 2nd leg? :) You wear Pippo and I wear Fabregas.

I know Arsenal always plays 4-4-2 and that Rosicky and Hleb always play together, but this is not na"always" game. You are playing a team with possibly the stongest midfield in the world when are fit.

--------------pirlo---------------
-----gattuso------ambro----
-------kaka'-----seedorf----- and you would play 4-4-2? Then you would end like Bayern in Munchen... Wenger is a great coach, you'll play 4-5-1 :)

About Eduardo ( who was actually always, ALWAYS, caled Da Silva before english media called him Eduardo for popularity! ), we is a deadly scorer. pure no.9. I've seen like 1000 matches from him. He'll play for 80 min and you will say: we managed him well, and then he scores... When Wenger plays him as a left winger the game is usually over for him.

This year I've seen like 15 matches of Arsenal at least. Cro TV shows them, bosnian also. Im "afraid", I have to admit, they play super football. But we cant forget that we have super attacking power in this team ( pirlo, Seedorf, kaka', pippo ). We are CL winners and we can behave like that. It will be great, and fingers crossed Sagna stays home for this game( aldough his case is tragic). .

We have to play the 4-3-2-1 at the Emirates. Playing with two strikers from the start is asking Arsenal to dominate the game. Pippo to start and play 60-70 minutes and Pato (if fit) to come on for him and have his speed cause problems. Can't wait for Wednesday!!

ARSENAL-MILAN: I CONVOCATI ROSSONERI
18/02/2008

MILANELLO - Sono 23 i giocatori rossoneri convocati da Carlo Ancelotti per la trasferta londinese di mercoledì sera contro l'Arsenal:

PORTIERI: Kalac, Fiori, Offredi (30);

DIFENSORI: Cafu, Maldini, Nesta, Kaladze, Simic, Jankulovski, Favalli, Bonera, Oddo;

CENTROCAMPISTI: Emerson, Gattuso, Seedorf, Gourcuff, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Brocchi;

ATTACCANTI: Kakà, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Pato.

according to italian press gila gets the nod over inzaghi and pato. the brazilian is supposed to be out weapon for the second half, to terrorize the, then hopefully tired, arsenal defence.

papers favour this line-up at the moment:

Gilardino
Kaka - Seedorf
Ambrosini - Pirlo - Gattuso
Jankulovski/Maldini - Kaladze - Nesta - Bonera/Oddo
Kalac

the fullback positions seem to be unclear. maybe carlo will go for an asymetrical solution and start with maldini and oddo and bring on jankulovski and bonera somewhen in the second half.

we'll have to wait and see

i agree with you, playing Gila would be suicide. With Pippo you know that you alway have threat on opponent's goal, coz pippo needs only 1 of the arsenal defenders to be late for 1 second in trying to spring offside trap, to get 1 on 1 vs the keeper.

Because he holds the ball better and we don't want to get pushed into our half playing away. This confirms my idea that Carlo will play a conservative game, packing the midfield up and trying to get as much as we can. He wants us to take control and put Arsenal out of the game and momentum.

With Kalac injured, and Pato not 100%...I am very very very worried...the thing is, when I am worried about a UCL fixture, Milan usually win...at least with respect to the aggregate score.

The recent loss by the gunners vs Man U, will either:
a) Motivate them to up their game vs us, and overperform....or
b) Destabilise them mentally, so they underperform, and give us too much respect.

If a) is the case, then I hope we can hold them to one or two goals, while scoring a cruical away goal...

If b) then the win is as good as in the bag....

The key for me, will be Wenger´s formation and tactics...if he crowds the middle, then we will suffer, but if he goes for a 4-4-2 formation, and the attacking style that Arsenal are famous for, if our defense holds (and that is a BIG "IF") then we should have no trouble scoring on them on the counter....

I too am having problems concentrating on work due to this tie, and might have to take a sedative (heh heh heh) tonite, and tomorrow nite, to get some sleep.

I hope, as I am sure will be the case, that Arsenal try to attack with all guns blazing, so that Kaka will have the space he seriously needs in order to properly impact the game. Arsenal dont have one defender IMO who, one on one, can stop Kaka...

Lets hope the World Player of the year performs as we know he can, and that which ever forward plays, actually converts his chances...as we are sure to pay for missed chances.

I don't usually defend Gilardino these days because it's getting just tiring, but saying that Gila doesn't hold the ball better is not true.

If you pay close attention to Gilardino coming from the foward position and back to get the ball, more than 75% (and I mean it) that he is able to 'relay' (that's the word I will use to describe) the ball to Kaka (who is rushing forward) or get a foul (because someone fouls him). Often, he is also able to hold the ball with two or three players around him in the midfield. I'm not joking.

Ok, it's true that he lost the ball too or commit foul when trying to go for header. BUT, I have several evidence for my point:

1) Look at the number of times he is able to relay the ball to Kaka or other players by coming to midfield in the game against Parma. Inzaghi did not (and should not) do that.

2) Carlo Ancelotti also mentioned that sometimes he didn't play Gilardino is because there is no need for him to relay the ball.

3) He actually relayed the ball to Inzaghi too in Parma's game (remember that header to Inzaghi), but INzaghi had been simply wasteful in front of the goal in Serie A.

Pippo did not play in any way better than Gilardino. They both played horribly in terms of goal, but Pippo did better in getting into the position to shoot (but almost always missed), while Gilardino is better at relaying.

With Pato/R99/Sheva + Gila/Inzaghi the combination can be deadly. I still maintain this position and, unfortunately, it is seldom tested out.

I don't understand some of these personal hatred against Gilardino; and I am still quite pissed that people say that he didn't contribute when in the first season he scored more than 15 goals (with no penalty goal btw) and still got
bombed by some people here. As a matter of fact, Sheva that season had taken at least 7 penalties, thus surpassing Gilardinos' number of goals. Saying that Gilardino diddn't contribute to our success in Serie A that season is just insane.

How many times do I have to come across with this point, and how many times have people ever been able to rebuff the above argument?

Here are four more incidences when Gilardino were able to relay the ball:

1) In one game (I forgot which), he got the ball from a long throw from Dida/Kalac and relayed the ball, in midfield, to Kaka who was wide open (because the last defender went with Gilardino but did not intercepted the ball) with a 1vs1, only to be saved by the Gk.

2) Against Manchester United (2-0 up) and relayed the ball to Seedorf, who passed it to Kaka on the right, who shot but hit the defender and went out for a corner. It was a counter attack.

3) Pato's goal against Reggina (?): Gilardino came all the way back to midfield and 'relayed' the ball to Kaka, who got all the space in front, again because the defender tighly marked Gilardino but failed to intercept the ball, and Kaka passed it to Pato who scored.

5) Del Piero's second goal against Germany: Anyone?

Gilardino --> Kaka (1vs1) missed.
Nesta --> Gilardino --> Seedorf --> Kaka, missed.
Pirlo --> Gilardino --> Kaka --> Pato scored.
Cannovaro --> Totti --> Gilardino --> Del Piero scored.

Do I need more?

***

Having said, I expect to see a 4-3-2-1 on Wednesday. I don't ever see Ancelotti risking to play 4-3-1-2.

Gila on away matches is undoubtely useful, at least for a part of the match. I'm sure in the second half Carlo will uncover a few cards, putting inside Pato/ Inzaghi.

Gila will fight with their backline in the first half, and then Pato or Inzaghi will come and try to fool their offside trap.

I still claim its better to play Pippo from the start and then introduce Pato. The greatest strenght of our forvart Gila is to "rely" the ball!! what kind of a strenght is that?? Drogba, Toni , Trezeguet also can rely the ball...and some other things as well... I do not hate Gila on personal level, that is not even possible, but he wasnt up to task for Milan.

So what is our tactics, to hold the ball for Kaka' to run into spaces. Its not playstation! Pippo has experience and is deadly in important games, always. I would really like for Gila to prove me wrong and score or something, but I have a feeling we will see same old poor Gilardino ( who was again booed from the pitch against Livorno by whole San Siro ) and will not be dangerous at all due to lack of normal forward that can actually run or hit the ball normally.

Another thing: Gila can head well, better then Pippo. But Arsenal will not be defending like PArma in the second half or Reggina. Gila will have to play in wide areas and he simply sucks in there. just put Pippo, he always scores somehow, that is a good enough reason :)

Whatever happens, we need a goal by someone. Oddo maybe from one of his mis**** crosses. Maybe his jubilar 1000th wrongly hitten cross will end up in a goal!!! hahahahaha!!

And I'm not denying that; I'm simply saying that saying that Pippo played better than Gilardino in Serie A is plain ridiculous.

I do agree with you that Pippo will probably be more deadly against Arsenal than Gilardino, but who knows. Gilardino has already scored twice in CL this season; not that we expect him to be bombarding like Inzaghi, but he is surely picking up.

I do not understand your point about not defending like Parma and Reggina. If you mean that Arsenal is going to leave more spaces, then I agree that both Gilardino and Pippo will benefit.

Oddo putting crosses? If he has been more successful in his crosses I beg both Pippo and Gilardino will do much better in Serie A. Janku (adn recently Serginho) are poor too; just look at Maldini came in for less than 45mins and he already sent in two dangerous crosses.

Where did Oddo's cross go to? That's right, the corner post.

p.s.: it's 'relay', not 'rely'.

There are only two reasons:

1) Gilardino or Pippo or any of our forwards are at the wrong position every time trying to head home.

2) Lazio used to have three attackers in the boxes to get the crosses whereas now there are usually only one thus decreasing the chance of success.

3) Training scheme issue.

4) Oddo gets worse personally.

I think the 4th one is more likely, seeing that his crosses are either WAY WAY over or WAY WAY too short; then with our strikers almost always marked by two defenders: I don't see they can score.

Oddo in most cases misses whole 16 yard box and not to mention those great crosses that end up in 10 th row of curva! its like his leg is made of wood...the way he hitts it, with no feeling at all. Just swings his leg and - buuuum! There she goeeeessss!!!

His only good cross that came with some football feeling ended up with Ronaldo's career ending injurd... well, as funny as it is, its is also a sad one.

About Gila and space. If Arsenal leaves space, Gila still cant use it as he can play well only in the box. That is what I thought when I mentioned Reggina and PArma. Gila 320 m from goal is like me against Cannavaro...

Inzaghi is a very lucky guy, he also has the knowledge of beeing at the right place in the right time. I think these are the reasons why he scores so much in the important matches. Lets be real Inzaghi is a player that cant drible, cant run past the defenders, he is not a strong target man, his heading is not the best but the most important thing is that he always somehow scors.
Gila is not any better, basically just a cloned Inzaghi. Gila my have little bit better heading and my be stronger.

Having said this I think it really doesnt matter who starts, if we are going to play just one striker up front ( ofcourse not counting Seedorf and Kaka as fowards). I personally would start with Gila to give a little hosle to the Arsenal defence, then put in Pippo when they tire a little bit. I would not put in Pato (would risk him), I may put him in if the result was something like 3:0 and we really needed a goal.

As long as I've seen milan matches in UCL, Pippo was always brilliant when played since 1st minute. And for such important game like this, if Pato's not fit, I guess Carletto will choose him over Gila.

Yes, Gila could be a great sparring partner for both Toure and Gallas in Arsenal backline. But in this away match, clearly Carletto won't play pressing football and push forward since 1st minute.
I dare to bet you that Carletto will play with patient, zone marking, deep in backline, hold the ball longer when in posession then looking for sporadic counter attack.

Btw, if Pato's fit, I hope coach play him over Pippo and Gila :D

ARSENAL-MILAN: I CONVOCATI ROSSONERI
18/02/2008
MILANELLO - Sono 23 i giocatori rossoneri convocati da Carlo Ancelotti per la trasferta londinese di mercoledì sera contro l'Arsenal:
PORTIERI: Kalac, Fiori, Offredi (30);
DIFENSORI: Cafu, Maldini, Nesta, Kaladze, Simic, Jankulovski, Favalli, Bonera, Oddo;
CENTROCAMPISTI: Emerson, Gattuso, Seedorf, Gourcuff, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Brocchi;
ATTACCANTI: Kakà, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Pato.

hopefully.. hopefully... hopefully these players will starts:

--------------Kalac-----------------
--Oddo--Nesta--Maldini--Jankulovski--
---------------Pirlo-----------------
-------Gattuso------Max------------
---------Kaka------Seedorf----------
-------------Inzaghi-----------------

sure i want to see Pato in this game.. but Inzaghi better starts for his experiences in CL should be useful more than Pato.but if he hits the wall so enter Pato.such a big game like this not just ability but also history needed.seems like Wenger will plays 4-4-2.he doesn't dare to plays 4-5-1 (specially this is the game in Emirates ) which was gave him CL final against Barca back then :rollani:

I agree with your assesment, Peachtot, and I also agree that we can start Pato over Pippo or Gila if he is fit. However, notice also that Arsenal may be able to push a little bit further given that Pato is not a box-only person. With 2 strikers, however, Arsenal will have to be more careful with their backline.

Having said, I think you are right that a 4-3-2-1 is in place, with either Inzaghi or Gila starting from the first minute (and sub each other depending on who starts).

Ze wenger may be watching Kaka carefully, but I'll be putting my hopes at the feet of one Andrea Pirlo. When he clicks, everyone in midfield clicks. And wow, our CL lineup is identical to the one from last season. Old they may be, but a winning formula, that you can't deny.

A good team performance is enough for me. Can't wait till kick off!

cj21000. I guess you are in NYC, so what I would reccomend is go to espn360.com

If your cable provider carries it, it will say "Congratulations, ur provider carries espn360" right in the opening page of the website and you can use it for free. If this is the case just download the media player from the website and you can watch replays from the games not just in CL but also in Serie A.
I reccomend this for anyone that is in the US. It is exceptional quality video, it works great for me and they have some kind of a deal with SerieA.tv so they show Serie A and from what I can see, they show all of Milan's games because all of Milan's games have been on there since i found out about the program about a month ago.

Oh my god...Carlo has done it AGAIN... when I saw Pippo from the start in PArma I thought: " this is not good..."

in the super important CL game, away against Arsenal he will play Gila, who is completely useless forward and - SLOW. And he played Pippo at Parma who is a super forward for big games, who moves brilliantly. and a player that every defence hates to play against... HOW THE HELL DID ANCELOTTI COME UP WITH THAT IDEA??? And dont say: crosse.... as we dont cross at all!!! Im pi....ed off right now!

And Marek is now doing a special training in Milanello and now working with the group, so it could be MAldini on the left, wqhich is also bad solution... ahhh....again with super ideas from our coach...
I know that what I am going to say may cause a storm here and all of you will scream at my face, however, I will say it any way, Playing Gila and benching Pippo is a mistake, but not as terrible as playing Paolo as a LB and Kala as a CB, if Maldini play in London then he must be the CB and Kala be the LB other wise Arsenal will destroy us, Don't get me wrong I know that Maldini is still a great player and also my favourite player and will always be, but playing him on the left will be sucide exactly like asking Arsenal to open a street on Milan left side, So in my opinion it wont make any good for both Milan or Paolo.
Also I have to say that I am 100% sure that carlo will field all of Bonera Nesta Kala Paolo which is also another mistake because Oddo is much faster than Bonera even though he stills useless.

Gila spearheading our attack is a correct choice since we are playing in Emirates. Tactically, he is the one to hold on to the ball to get our mid involved. Pato will come in as a sub later on. that's for sure.

Greets,

It seems that Sagna and Almunia will play tomorrow, but there are still doubts about Clichy, and Rosicky will not play. I think the Arsenal team will be:

………... Adebayor
Hleb Fabregas Flamini Eboue
………… Gilberto
Clichy Gallas Toure Sagna
………... Almunia

Of course it is very possible that Arsené will opt for a 4-4-2 with Eduardo next to Adebayor, but my hunch is that Gilberto will start. Rosicky and van Persie being injured is a big blow to the team, but Sagna being available is a big plus. I think it will be a very cagey game and I don’t see there being many goals – no more than 1 goal per team, if that.

Looking forward to it anyway, I’m nervous, but it should be a fascinating game. Milan are a team that I love to watch play, but hopefully they’ll have an off day tomorrow!

c'mon 38 yrs old GK and never plays in such an important game in CL ? what a "LUCK" :rollani: but crossed my fingers that somehow he plays the outsanding performance and makes some fantastic saves!
-------------Fiori---------------
--Oddo--Nesta--Maldini--Janku--
------------Pirlo----------------
------Gattuso---Seedorf--------
-------------Kaka--------------
-------Pato-----Inzaghi--------

have to scores some goals in Emirates so it'll be benefit for Milan so i put 2 strikers hopefully both of them scores in this game :gonova:

as for Gunners:
since Wenger never likes 4-5-1 formation maybe this formation will plays by them:
4-2-3-1

-----------------Lehman-------------------
Sagna-----Toure-----Gallas-------Clichy----
----------Flamini-------Gilberto------------
Hleb-------------Cesc---------------Edu--
--------------Adebayor-------------------

simply looks like 4-5-1 but when attacking 4-2-3-1 is more likely.since awful performance by Eboue against MU i think Wenger will keep him out from the formation.

If KAKA, pirlo and seedorf all come forward at the same time, i expect milan to concede ATLEAST 6 goals.
Flamini is the kinda DM that doesn't sit back...instead he attacks the other players upfield in order to push them back, win the ball and distribute.

Pirlo doesn't go up anyway, and Kaka and Seedorf (and seedorf also defends, but not as well) always go up. I think your assessment may be inaccurate.

a 4-3-2-1 with the usual formation will be perfect against Arsenal, then a 4-3-2-1 again at San Siro in the first half, and introduce 4-3-1-2 only in the second half or 60minutes or so in the second league will be Mister Carlo's (usual) game plan.

Arsenal will try to control the ball, which they will do so successfully. They'll press Milan hard, and Milan usually do poor away.

But if somehow Milan has a top day and players are passing accurately, then Arsenal will have a more difficult day.

Its the Best side in the world, the most technical league, & Best players. Its not just Febragas, C.Ronaldo, Gerrard etc etc. We are talking about the VERY BEST here. Looks like the fullbacks are back for the game and Lehman will stick in goal. Eboue can replace Rosicky no problem, but please Arsene don't play Gilberto

I'm still unclear of the formation Wenger will play,

IMHO 451 - will be a safer way to take on Milan as this will pack the midfield and Kaka wouldn't have the room but scoring with this formation will be difficult, or
442 - this way it is more likely that Arsenal can score but at the same time is risky as Milan have a very dangerous midfield and more room.

I will still stick by my judgment and say Arsenal will play 442 at the Emirates and 451 at the SS.
