View Full Version : Do we need a new coach?
For many of us(me included) Carlito should have been sacked after losing to Liverpool but he survived (sadly) but after being disqualifaid in last 16 after 6 or 7 years and not wining Scudeto he will probably get fired in summer or sooner .
Who would you like to replacae him and why and if ther is someone who thinks Carlo should stay go and join Inter fan club.
I pray it will be the Italian genius LIppi(he didnt denie rumors for the first time) or the crayz portugues Mourinho(he sad he wishes to coach a team in Seria A )

If Carlo left after the Liverpool loss we never would have won the CL last year. Carlo needs to be able to choose what players he wants, and the winning will follow.

Logically speaking, Ancelotti should've been fired after two straight years of mental break down (losing to Deportivo and Liverpool), but for some reason he stayed around. Aside from the fact that he is a good coach, his stay also has a lot to do with the fact that he doesn't care about what the team does on the transfer market.
This guy is a complete pushover when it comes to dealing with the management. We sold Shevchenko in 2006, and spent the whole damn summer looking for a replacement only to find some guy named Ricardo Oliveira; all Ancelotti said about the was he thinks Oliveira is a good player. We have been using the same damn players for practically five years now without meaningful additions, but you don't never hear any complaints from Ancelotti or even demands from him. Any player that the management doesn't buy because of the price tag will automatically be labeled as "doesn't fit our playing style" by Ancelotti. Any crappy player the management does buy will automatically be called either "a great champion or a supreme young talent" by Ancelotti. He even take it as far as talking about star players just like the management to give the fans false hopes of us actually making some good signings. Where else can you find someone like this to be your coach? That's why Ancelotti has stayed this long and will continue to stay here for the time being. The management has lost interest in making this team great and they need a coach who is obedient to carry out their plans. A guy like Mourinho would've had a media tour about Berlusconi and Galliani's incompetence by now had he been coaching the last five years.
In the extremely unlikely even that Ancelotti does get fired, I would like to see Mourinho take over. The guy is a genius as a coach and knows how to handle his players. Furthermore, he won't just sit there and let the management do whatever the hell they want to do with the team. He will step it up and take the fight to the management if that's what has to be done.
Lippi would obviously be a pretty good choice as well, but I think Mourinho is a guy who can be here for the long term and build a dynasty.
Another coach I would be interested in is Prandelli of Fiorentina. This guy has an eye for talent and knows how to mentor young players. He would be great if we are going to start rebuilding with young players.

This is the kind of post i was expected to read. Why didn't you post that yesterday? If Carlo wasn't a good coach, you don't discover it today (especially because you say this was your idea since 2005).
On another note, the "italian genius" lost 3 CL finals out of 4. Still a great coach though, but nobody is perfect.
A guy like Mourinho would've had a media tour about Berlusconi and Galliani's incompetence by now had he been coaching the last five years.
:dontkn:
and this is why we stick with guys like Ancelotti who belong to Milan and guys like Mourinho...
Berlusconi and Galliani's incompetence???? My friend, it is because of those guys, and Braida, and Ramaccioni, and Meerseman, and others that you like this club in the first place!

I don't understand what you are trying to say. All I am saying is, Berlusconi and Galliani need to be pushed to make the right decisions. These two have been sitting there and doing nothing for years now and because of the lack of internal pressure on them to make good signings, they are not even trying to build a good team any more. A media tour might be a big harsh, but i that's what needs to be done then so be it. A guy like Ancelotti is a great coach but he is way too obedient to drag this team out of the gutter that the management has put it in.
Well one thing I don't want and I am pretty sure you will change your mind when it happens is a coach who is always feuding with management and gets himself fired and adds something to the team that is just as bad or arguably even worse than a losing streak...instability.
In any case IF its the management's fault a new coach won't change too much, I don't see how in a disagreement between Mourinho and Berlusconi you expect Mourinho to prevail.
This current edition of the team needs more viable depth/new personnel and a bit more variety, the sky is not falling.

are you saying that they purposely not sign good players so we'll lose? And just because a coach doesn't go public with his displeasures doesn't mean he is not trying to put pressure on them to sign players.
No disrespect to Carlo, but now he should go. Simply because he is not a type of manager who could win the league. This defeat wouldn't have hurt this much severe if ACM were involed in the Scudetto race. Now its only about getting into the CL next season, not even the Coppa Italia. Carlo will remain a legend but now is the time to bring Jose Mourinho.

I see your point. It is rather difficult for a coach to change the minds of the management. But the least the coach has to do is to give it a try. Stability is a great thing to have but as you can see from what happened to us the past few seasons, this current stability hasn't brought us anything good. The management feel very comfortable not doing their job. And they have no pressure put on them to do the right thing because the coach never says anything. I am not saying Mourinho should have a constant feut with Berlusconi but our coach needs to let his voices be heard rather than just sit there quietly and let management make one moronic decision after another.

They purposely didn't sign good players so they can make money off of this team. If you have any other explanations, I'd like to hear it. As far as voicing his displeasures is concerned, maybe you are right, maybe Ancelotti has done it privately, but as you can see, the results suck. Sometimes in life, drastic measures are necessary to get the job done. Whether he should have a public feud with the management or not is another issue. But Ancelotti has got to do a much better job motivating the management to do what needs to be done to help the team instead of making up phony plans just to get the fans to buy their tickets every summer.
Give me a new coach better than Carlo regarding Champions League if you have!

Ancelotti isn't the only reason the club has failed lately. It's a responsibility that all have to accept, from Carlo's inability to do better with what he has (which quite frankly isn't that bad), to the management's lack of reinforcing the squad in key areas, to the players not performing. Even fans have to take some responsibility seeing as they hounded the players last season and the start of this, which simply cannot help the team.
They purposely didn't sign good players so they can make money off of this team..
If they wanted to make money, then they really shouldn't be managing a football club, there are plenty of other much more lucrative industries. In fact, football is notorious for the losses patrons make spending on their clubs (Moratti knows this very well).
Give me a new coach better than Carlo regarding Champions League if you have!
Jose Mourinho. He is a sgood as Carlo if not better & as far as the league is concerned than Jose is miles ahead of Carlo.
Ancelotti not the only one to be blame.and put the idea to hire Mourinho on your pocket mate.if it has to be change the person should be Van Basten.or Klinsmann (well.. since he got the job already in Munich we shall forget about him).

i say bring on LIPPI!

I don't think a new coach will help. I believe the introduction of new hungry blood is needed and the management has to realize this. This side has won two European cups and half the players are world cup winners.
Like what happened when Rivaldo came in, the club was injected with a new spirit. It was hungry for success. I believe with Pato and Kaka, with the addition of players that can respond to Carletto's tactics (Ronaldinho on the left?) will be more apt than the sudden change of coach.
If new blood cannot respond to his calls, then there is a need to reassess the situation.
I think results may force us to remove Carlo, but I also think that he's such a nice guy to not make a fuss over trasnfers than Gayliani & berlu will keep him so they can continue to buy cheap nothing players to wear our beloved jersey.
It's hard to say if he is tactically inflexible as he lacks the players to do anything different.
:dontkn:
and this is why we stick with guys like Ancelotti who belong to Milan and guys like Mourinho...
Berlusconi and Galliani's incompetence???? My friend, it is because of those guys, and Braida, and Ramaccioni, and Meerseman, and others that you like this club in the first place!
Galliani has nothing to do with it. He's a bad politician and Berlusconi's stooge.
Donadoni is the obvious choice.
Guys Donadoni is much worse choice than Carlo. I think Carlo is great coach, and he's done what he could with that team. We have great players, but they are mainly all in ages, and they can play every single match. Nesta, Pirlo, Seedorf, Maldini, Kaka with his injury don't have replacements. Simic is way off the level, as well as Favalli is. In the middle there is only Gourcuff with some technical knowledge, but he's tactic appears to be really really bad. So we can not aspect him to play instead of Pirlo, neither Seedorf. Kaka can't be replaced, but when he's out of form, we don't have none who could play on the level. So he has to play and he plays bad.
So it's not Carletto's fault that we cant fight for scudetto, neither for CL. We can play a few good games in year, but not in that tempo. WC made it all much more complicated, and there was nothing he could do.
Well if he has to leave, there are only three choices in my opinion. Lippi (preferd), Rijkaard and Mourinho who would be the on we need on mercato season.
there's no point of sacking ancelotti if we stay with current squad. If he was given 2-3 good signing per season to overcome our aging and squad depth problem, I think he can do better than what he achieved so far.
Look at inter, they sign more good players than us each season. And how many trophy they lifted? (except for the given one)
Judging from the resource he have, and what he achieved, I think he's doing good, not great but good.
It's new players we need, not ancelotti replacement.
Or Rijkaard ... or anybody, wtf ?!
We loose a match and so we fire the coach, if we fire the coach and stay with all the same players, no need to sack him, it would be useless ...
So firstly, let's change some of the players, and then, if Ancelotti doesn't do another great year like he did since 2003 (don't forget: 2 CL, 1 Scudetto, 1 Italia Cup and some other minor trophies), so we should find a new coach.
Anyway, even if I want him to stay, I'm pretty sure that if Italy isn't European Champion, there will be a kind of trade between Milan and Italy: Donadoni to Milan for Ancelotti to national team ... Personnally, I don't see any other change that could happen appart of this one !!
Mourinho: great coach, speaks too in medias, it's not what we like in Milan ... and 0 CL with Chelsea whereas he had an enormous budget for transferts and used it each year !!
Lippi: perhaps the greatest coach on the market but there's something, i don't know what, doing that i don't want him to Milan, perhaps his years in Juventus ...
Trappatoni: Oups why did i quote this guy ?! lol
Rijkaard: great coach but he doesn't know how to manage conflicts
Van Basten: as far as I know, he always said these last weeks/months that he wouldn't come to Milan, and anyway, we don't know what he could do in a club, a bit like Donadoni
Tassoti: no charisma lol
Costa Curta: too young for Milan and no experience
Benitez: he doesn't have the profile and he is a "communautarist coach", i mean that he buys players from his country because he has money (in Liverpool) and did a kind of Spanish Liverpool or Latin Liverpool
Do we need a new coach? If yes who is the best...
I like Ancelotti, all I want is a cooperative management.
So, if Ancelotti says we need to buy Benzema, Berlusconi goes and buys Benzema...
I think Ancelotti is the best coach in the world at the moment. If he would like to leave the club for the national team of Italy i would pick Mourihno.
Mourinho with this stuff would not be able to achieve
The same for Lippi.
Donadoni is a legend but incapable as a coach.
Lippi won the World cup with Italy but for me regarding his sucess at clubs, he is a looser, he won only one CL with Juventus against the rubbish Ajax of that year in penalties. For league , Calciopoli is the proof while in Inter he totally failed.'
So Carlo and buy whoever players he wants. Except if he wants to leave then Mourihno..
For all of you who voted or who will vote, i put to have two options like me, i voted 1) for Ancelotti, 2) Mourihno if Ancelotti will decide to leave us...
To make myself clear the 2nd and the 3rd option is that you want Ancelotti to stay and if he doesn't want to stay the other coaches. In 4,5,6 you don't want Ancelotti, you want one of the coaches, in the 6th you can name other coach.. as a replacement.
For me to add on my statement,
I would love to see Van Basten as a coach but he is not good....

I think we need new players not new coach. Remember, Milan had palyed a great football before 2 years with the current players because they were much younger.
Now that they are all aged they can't run and they get tired easilly.
But remember also that if Mourinho comes to Milan then our team will have very very big changes! Mourinho will change it all in our team.
so let me get this straight..
We get a new coach and you expect Milan to win Serie A title, Coppa Italia AND CL? wtf you must be crazy...
its not the coach, its the age of the players(like many others stated..), we need more youth elements.
besides, Carlo will stay as Milan's coach for 08/09 Season ;)
so TBH, this thread is useless...

Why should Carlo go :dontkn: I mean he HAS made quite a few mistakes....that's for sure but so have all of the coaching top brass....Capello, Fergie, Lippi etc. One annoying thing about Carlo is that he is a bit of an eliteist. That is if you aren't THE BEST IN THE UNIVERSE, he may not pay much attention to you. This prevented him from keeping faith in Henry when he was at Juve and is preventing him from allowing Gourcuff to evolve into a superstar. It is also preventing him from giving very promising players in the primavera a fair chance. Di Gennaro, the Aubemyang brothers, Vogel, Dhorasoo, Darmian and Foggia come into either of the above categories. His 'disorder' is sometimes damaging because often those rated as the best begin to lack motivation when they see that their places are safe and no matter how good a player is he will lose form, get injured or be fatigued at some point or the other. His stubborn insistence of using Pirlo at all times is beginning to get annoying and predictable. Pirlo's obvious weaknesses can be exploited and many teams especially Arsenal have surely done their homework. Then he has put waaay too much faith in names...names such as Inzaghi, Gilardino, my beloved Ronaldo, even Seedorf and Kaka to an extent where other names such as Aubemyang, Gourcuff and Foggia might have well done the trick.
^ The above said, it is indeed a small, by comparison, price to pay for such a successful and dare I say resourceful manager. Think about the flaws of the other managers and you'll see my point.
Fergie: stubborn, tendancy to prematurely dispose of his stars, ruthless in selections, sticks to 4-4-2, arrogant, takes veeeeery long to rebuild, easily outfoxed defensively
Wenger: too much faith in youth, inconsistent (0-4 va ManU, 1-5 Tottenham, trophyless for the last three years)
Mourinho: defensive and boring, more arrogant than Fergie and will rather leave a team in the middle of a season than struggle with less than what he requires
Lippi: probably the most balanced of the bunch but none of his teams, Inter, Juve, Italy have ever impressed me MORE BORING THAN MOURINHO
Capello: will surely bring trophies but he'll piss us off by doing something ridiculous like benching Kaka, Nesta or Pato. He ALWAYS goes after the team's biggest star (e.g. ADP, Baggio, Ronaldo, Beckham, Totti, Cassano). Winning trophies will feel good for sure but it will be a bitter-sweet win without our darling players. Add this to the fact that I'd rather monitior the growth of my toenails every minute than watch Capello's team play :yuck:
Carlo is for me one of the few Italian coaches that has an attacking mentality. He makes us play beautiful football and our style of attacking through the centre. Bold, arrogant, beautiful :proud:
I know this Milan isn't playing beautiful football by a long stretch but just look at our loses: Rui, Rivaldo, Stam, Costacurta, Cafu(due to age), Crespo :( , Sheva :( :( , Tomasson (hated him b ut he was good and he'd probably be a starter in this team) Inzaghi (again due to age), Serginho(age), Madlini (age)
In comparison, look at what we have gotten :Gila, Olivera, Oddo, Janku, Bonera, Gourcuff, Emerson, Ronaldo, Pato
The losses FAR FAR outweigh the gains....in fact Only Ronaldo and Pato are worth mentioning. Add this to the fact that Ronaldo is more suited to the "losses" column rather than the gains because he's always out injured and we're pretty much screwed. But we weren't. We made the CL final in 05 and won it last year. No striker? No problem...Carlo converted Kaka into a striker and was so successful at it that Kaka won best striker and best player of the CL. Ancelotti defined Pirlo's role to perfection and got the best out of Seedorf in almost ANY position. He has recognised Paloschi's unmistakable talents and is gradually introducing him in. I love Carlo. He was one of us on the field and he is one of us on the Milan bench.
I prefer Spaletti over Carlo! This man is genious! I agree that changing coach won`t solve all our problems, we also need to buy some players! Carlo is a good caoch and I like him, but for now Mourinho or Spaletti seem to be better! Anyway we`ll see!

Still, with a budget more than 10 times smaller than Milan's he managed to create a team that regularly beats Ancelotti's team and that's improving year after year.

Coach is not our problem... we need trophy hungry players... and Admin should but out of player selection... not to say it should be autonomous... Carlo is a good coach and if most of his squad we not in wheel chairs or poisoned with age he could have done much better... not his fault for having a squad that only has two players (Kaka & Pato) that other top would want to buy... Look at it... its like we were this old Lada in F1 race... Who could have done better with this present squad? I think a systematic retooling of the squad and admin is needed... We are so wealthy and we wont buy top quality players to show our powers... not that we want to spend like Chelsea or Madrid...but we should not be competing with Serie B & C teams... and we talk about who we should sell...who wants them to buy... put them on Ebay and see the offers you get...less than a week's salary... i rest my case for now...
Ace is fine, all we need is a few good players (at least 5, maybe 6 and if possible 7or 8 new players) in this summer to strengthen the team. No coach can fix the problem if the team have 90 % players either injured, recovering from injury or over work or out of form.

Looks like Rijkaard will be free in the summer, hmmmm.
Rijkaard isn't a particularly great coach, I think he's overrated. Ten Caat was a massive influence at Barca during Rijkaard's successful years.

I really wonder what Ten Caat' role actually in Barca and Chelsea (now)? Like what are his tasks for example. Maybe anyone can explain it?
He seems to have big influence for Barca (couple years ago) and Chelsea (now).

Sorry I have a spelling mistake, it's Ten Cate, not Ten Caat (don't know how I made the mistake).
Anyway, his role was Assistant Manager, similar to Tassotti and Billy in Milan.
Is there a better coach than Carlo available? As long as he still has the motivation to coach Milan, Carlo is the best option.

Personally I think Lippi's better than Carlo and is available.
Quite frankly, as much as you have to admire his record, I dont like Lippi's style of play too much. His Juve teams won, but played boring football. Italy won the WC, through grit and Pirlo's creativity, but not through beautiful football. And besides, if he came to Milan, I think he would fail like he did at Inter. I think Lippi is only suited to Juve.
Carlo, on the other hand, has won by playing good football. Who else would have played with Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa, and Rivaldo in the same line-up? If he were to leave now to coach Italy after Euro I would understand, but whoever the new coach is has to play and win the Milan way, I dont want us turning into a boring, counter-attacking team, or a long ball Zaccheroni-esque team.

I don't think Lippi's a particularly dull coach (as far as how his teams play), as his Juve wasn't that boring (especially compared to Cappello's Juve) and his Italy were a pretty dynamic side that brought some new ideas into the game (such as pressing hard in front of the opposition defence with a player like Perotta).
Plus, Carlo was a far more boring coach before coming to Milan than Lippi. He was heavily criticised of being a defensive minded coach.
I've changed my mind, I guess we need a new one.
Carlo has looked out of ideas..
And I agree with you,ACM1983. No Rijkard, just hire Lippi.
why we need a new coach if the current one will always have his job eternally ? :tong: joking here. nothing's against Carletto. in fact i couldn't find the one who is better and avaiable to replace him now. few names dancing in my head. but i won't pick one of them to replace Carlo:
1. Moaningho: no kidding. Berlusconi will breake his swear as prime minister just to critizes Jose's statements everyday.
2. Lippi: i like him. brilliant but i always felt aslept when i saw Juve's game when he was the coach there. well.. except Holland-Italy semifinal in Euro 2000 which was defined thriller game (despite no goal before PK shot out and many PKs was given before the 90th minutes game was over to Holland but no one turned to be a goal :rollani: ).
3. Rijkaard: few season ago Barca was looked like slaped Madrid at their face when Madrid claimed themselves as Los Galacticos when Barca played a beautiful football and had everything those seasons, CL, La Liga title and more and man behind the scene of course Rijkaard :) genius without a doubt ! but now, with the likes of Messi, Ronaldinho, Bojan, Iniesta, Henry (:rollani: hate him), Puyol and co but trophyless for the last 2 season. that's proved that he ain't better than Ancelotti who gave us many trophies to celebrate each seasons.
4. MvB : simple. he wants to quits coaching after the end of Euro 2008. but great coach following his career as a great player. but still he needs a trophy to prove that. Ancelotti is better on this way.
5. Rafa Benitez: no.. no..no..at least Ancelotti had scudetto resume when Rafa's team just a witness for a Chelski, Arsenal, or MU's glory every season. no premiership title. no kidding as i am hunger for more scudetto here
6. Klinsi: taken because Mount Blanc Beckenbauer's pen already got his signature for next season :rollani: damn good. my 1st choice if only everything is possible.
7 and etc is nothing compare to Carlo :)

I don't think we need to replace Carlo yet, he's a good coach (who can infuriate sometimes).
As for Lippi, I'd take him if but he's very demanding, and the management probably won't be able to meet his requirements. He says he'll coach outside of Italy next anyway.
Another possibility is Donadoni. This guy for me is one of the most underrated coaches in the game. Though he’s not as experienced as Carlo, so far his resume is pretty impressive.
He started off managing at Lecco for a season. I’m not really sure how he did there if I’m honest. A season later he moved to Livorno, where in his first season he reached ninth in the league with them. Considering we’re talking about Livorno who have always been relegation battlers (and are now as well), it’s a very impressive achievement. In his second season at Livorno, he went one better and actually had them at sixth place at halfway through the season. Unfortunately, he was unfairly criticised by the chairman and ended up resigning. We all know what’s happened to Livorno since.
After Livorno, he saw Lippi win the World Cup with Italy and has taken over since. Initially, he was very heavily criticised after some embarrassing results. A 2-0 loss against Croatia in his first match (but this was without any of the World Cup winners and against what is a very strong Croatia side) started things off badly. This was followed by a 1-1 against Lithuania in the first qualifier for Euro 2008 and a 3-1 loss against France in humiliating fashion. What many struggle to realise is that there were many factors that affected Donadoni’s team at this point:
- He was new in this position and he was still trying to set up his team and put it together.
- He had to contend with the backlash of the Calciopoli verdicts.
- Players weren’t fully fit (sharp) yet, as the Italian season had barely begun.
- Some of the older players, namely Totti and Nesta were thinking of retiring. In Nesta’s case it wasn’t a problem, as he made his stance clear and stuck to his decision. Totti on the other hand made indecisive comments about retiring and eventually said he’d only want call ups for “important” matches. This semi-retirement is totally unacceptable imo and Donadoni forced Totti to make a decision to commit or retire fully, or rather he didn’t try to convince Totti to stay (Totti retired of course). This for me was a good move by Donadoni, who showed firmness when faced with players not committing.
- Many of the players were still going through a WC victory hangover.
Since the initial hiccups, Donadoni’s side has steadily improved and went on a fantastic run of something like 10 undefeated games. The side is more than capable of competing against some of the favourites of Euro 2008 (namely France and Spain) and Donadoni now has a number of options to choose from, as players have come forward in their career (e.g. Di Natale, Amauri and Borriello).
During the start of his tenure as Italy coach, many were calling for him to be sacked, saying he was making a mockery of Lippi’s great side. Now, many of the same people want him to sign a new contract (something he’s not done) to continue to build after Euro 2008. Throughout his time as Italy manager (good and bad times), he’s been slated heavily by the Italian press. Time and again he’s been questioned and put under immense pressure (more than pretty much any other International coach). Until now, he’s got on with the job at hand and has got a side that’s looking very strong.
Personally, I think with Spalletti and Prandelli he’s one of the leading figures of the next generation of Italian managers. Right now, if there was a manager I’d be looking to eventually bring in at Milan, it’d be him and I’m sure the Milan management have taken note of him too.

In Euro 2000, it wasnt lippi in azzurri but dino zoff as italian allenatore.
remember when berlusconi told something bad on his tactic during euro in Benelux even italy reached the final then lost against France ?

God.. how could i forgot that one?? yes.. Lippi is the one who brought that Copa De Monde to Italy. silly me :rollani: thx for the correction. and yes it was Zoff who lost his squad from France. and made France got double title alongside with Copa De Monde 2 years before. and against Holland i remember that Stam missing the penalty spot by sending the ball high to the roof. not to mention Maldini also missed the spot kick (he said he got confused on which foot he should use because he be able to use both). but again.. it was Zoff as the coach not Lippi :stress:
I dont think Donadoni has the right level of experience to coach a big club like Milan. The trend with national teams have now shifted to employing lesser experienced, but perhaps fresher coaches (Klinsmann comes to mind), but with a big football club, expected to win trophies and remain competitive, I think only an experienced, seasoned manager would do. I'd probably go for Rijkaard over Donadoni or MVB if given the choice.

Why Rijkaard? The guy's hardly the greatest coach around imo. I'd feel much safer with Donadoni at Milan than Rijkaard. Experience is important, but Donadoni has experience in Italy (Serie A and at national level), and his style of coaching is very well suited to the modern game. Tactically his teams have always been well balanced (something Rijkaard definitely can't attest to) and he's been successful through his short coaching career, to the point where he's done the unthinkable (look at his record with Livorno).
