We already have Gattuso, Flamini and Ambrosini. We don't need Essien especially if Pirlo goes. If we add Essien (and Pirlo goes), we will play then with Essien, Gattuso and Flamini. This is a more defensive midfield than Carlo's one. :D

But what is the point of that? Pirlo was never used to make tons of goals. He is also a player that not so interested to make goal but more passionate to serve other players. There were many occasions he choosed give other player (striker) to score than himself doing it even he had much more chance to make a goal.

What I am trying to say, we should (in my opinion) to be like Milan before, Milan with full of creativity in the midfield (in Carlo era's best time we had Pirlo, Seedorf and Rui Costa/Kaka as our creative/offensive midfielders), just like Barca this season.

That's why I choose Milan go for Hernanes (even this make Dzeko, Ade and other non-EU striker will be impossible for this season) and make a trio of midfield : Pirlo, Hernanes and Gattuso with Pirlo given the freedom to manage the game by himself WITHOUT worriying to defend so deeply like he did this year.

I think all of you are underplaying Essien offensively. He might not be as creative as Pirlo per se, but he is not Gattuso when it comes to offense. He got a great shot, can dribble himself out of trouble or create problem for other team, good passer and have a good read of the game.

There's no denying his talent and going forward he is a major threat (especially back in Lyon). However, my issue is that we've already got a similar player in Flamini, and what Pirlo offers isn't the same as what Essien brings. We'll lose depth by bringing in Essien, and more importantly how are we going to fit 3 world class DM's in the side?

He's a far, far better offensive threat than you think. I think Chelsea is woefully misapplying his talents. This guy would be a massive asset and he would add a lot to the squad.

Gago the new Pirlo Monday 22 June, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan are looking to Fernando Gago as a potential replacement for Andrea Pirlo, who could be moving to Chelsea this summer.

Despite claiming he is happy at San Siro, Pirlo made no secret that a switch to the Blues would be welcomed.

On the other hand, President Silvio Berlusconi has admitted that the club could be looking to cash in on one of their key players.

“I didn’t want him to leave, but then they showed me the budget,” said the Prime Minister.

At Via Turati they would fancy Real Madrid’s Gago to be the new playmaker in Leonardo’s formation.

‘El Pintita’ is an Argentine international, a similar type of player to Fernando Redondo – who wore the Rossoneri shirt in the past.

Los Merengues would like to keep him in Madrid but if the right offer, in the region of £12m, was to come in they would let him go.

The former Boca Juniors ace is also a communitarian – he holds an Italian passport since his mother is Italian.

---------------------------------------------

Gago would fit the mold of the kind of players we seem to be targetting now and for £12 million i think it would be quite a good move. Though it does depend how much we would sell Pirlo for. I personally would let Gattuso move on too, i love the guy to pieces but if his heart isn't in it then there's no point keeping him. Let him have his dream of playing in England, that way the team can move on.

Flamini--Gago--Essien in midfield with Ambrosini and one other on the bench (Melo? Hamsik?), seems like a good core to me.

Gago would be a great addition... Essein is a great player... if we sell Pirlo we can also sell ambrosini and replace him with Melo... this would give us a new look milan... a total of 5 new players are needed...one forward... 3 midfielders 2 defenders...

Let's be honest. Pirlo has always been one of Ancelotti's "favourites". His role was created by Carlo and Carlo plays him whenever fit. Would he be used in the same way by Leo? Who knows? Would he accept being on the bench? With his ego, probably not. So if we are looking for a more traditional midfield with a traditional holding player (Gago, Alonso) and some defensive mids (Janku, Gattuso, Flamin, Ambro), then it might be best to sell Pirlo for good cash now and remodel our midfield. We won't be getting any more for him than we are now, so this might turn out to be a pretty smart move.

Maybe not, but on the downside we'd be just as boring to watch as Inter and Chelsea. Of course winning is the most important, but still - playing three defensive midfielders (I know Essien isn't strictly a DM but he's not exactly Zidane, either) should be banned from the world of football :rr30:.

If we play with three CMs, then two of those should be players in the mould of Gattuso, destructive ones, but the last one should be a creative force, like Pirlo.

Btw, I really hope next season (if he's still here) Pirlo won't be playing as a bloody sweeper, but more advanced - leaving Gattuso and Flamini to do the dirty work, while he can focus on starting the attacks.

If Pirlo stays i will be happy because he is still one of the best midfielders of the world and he will shine for us because Leo will give him the space to roam on the field unlike Carlo,Pirlo with space to play.....it cant get better, just look at his performances for Italy,Lippi gives him space and he plays very good.

But if he leaves its probably because Chelsea overpaid for him(30 million for Pirlo??)wich is a great deal for us and we will get a younger player in return to fill the gap so if he leaves i also will be happy.

A win-win situation.

Pirlo is far from his best at this moment, but still a great player to have.

Ancelotti didn't create that role for him. Mazzone did, in Brescia... Ancelotti has the merit of giving him the chance to become a unique player in that role.

I think we should keep Pirlo. We can't change the whole team too quickly so I think we should now look to keep most of what we have left. Pirlo this past season hasn't been too bad either. I think the criticism is a little unwarranted and on the whole didn't perform too badly after returning from injury. In fact, I'd still argue he's been one of our more consistent performers.

For Italy, he's remained one of their best players and has only looked a little out of sorts during the confederations cup (where he was still one of the better players in the side), when the whole side looked mediocre.

At Milan, he was heavily restricted under Carlo for a few seasons now and I think with some changes in his position he can still be of great use for another season or two. There are others in the squad with high wages I'd much rather sell before selling Pirlo.

exactly my toughts... maybe if leo gives him more freedom in front of gattuso and flamini (De Rossi and Gattuso in Italia squad) he could perform very well.. we shouldn't change this team too quickly, but some changes are definitively needed...

as far as wages are concerned, they can live with it... i read on gazzetta that with current departures milan saved 54M€ only from salaries...

1) Point well taken. Pirlo is always a great player to have, but if a player of his characteristics is not in the new coach's plans, he himself doesn't mind leaving, AND we get a massive offer for him, then why not sell him? Everybody wins.

2) Yes Mazzone may have created that role for him, but Ancelotti perfected it. Tactically speaking, he developed into arguably the world's best deep lying playmaker under Ancelotti. His Italy call ups resulted from his performances for Milan, not Brescia. And the most important (for him) is that Ancelotti has undying faith in him and his ability. I have not seen one Milan game in the last 5 years where Pirlo was on the bench for any other reason other than injury or match fitness. He was played even when he played atrociously.

3) I have no proof that Pirlo has a big ego, but do you think he would accept sitting on the bench? He doesn't come across to me as the type of player who would do that. I am even willing to bet that if Leo benches Pirlo for half the season, he would ask for a transfer.

Selling Pirlo for 30m could make sense! I would miss the guy but since we've already been selling some of our best players (kaka-gourcuff) we could make it a real revolution by also selling pirlo. that amount of money for a 30yo is good business!! at least if we sign a young and good replacement. someone like hernanes for example.

20m isn't good enough IMHO, I'd rather keep Pirlo. Heck, Aly is ~15m and Dzenko is 30m+.

Probably a likely bluff, but a potential replacement Hernanes is supposedly 30m+ too. Gago would be cheaper but are any of these possible Pirlo replacements interested in Milan assuming they are affordable?

I realize Pirlo is nearing the wrong side of 30, but he's (again, IMHO) a world class player. 20m just doesn't cut it, even if he demands a transfer.

It's 20 million pounds for Pirlo, not euros. And that would be a great price for a player who is past 30, hasn't really been his best for the past couple of years and is certainly on the downside of his career. I would hate to see Pirlo go, personally, because of what he has done for Milan, but it would be smart to sell him now and buy a good, young playmaker to take his place.

if we lose pirlo, we will need a real cm playmaker... just 1 more hole we'll have a hard time filling. Seedorf can do it on occasion but he'll be 34 by end of season. Di Gennaro is thought to be converted to that role but it wont happen overnight. ideal situation would be keep pirlo for him to learn from. looks like we'll play a 4-3-3 w/ pirlo sitting a little infront of gattuso and ambrosini instead of behind.

If we change our playing style and depend more on wingers and attacking wingbacks, we may not need the deep lying playmaker. Flamini could step in for Pirlo with Gattuso and Janku in midfield, Pato and Dinho further up, and a strong targetman up front. It all depends on what formation Leo has in mind--Pirlo could be an amazing asset, but also a defensive liability if not used properly.

If we would sell Pirlo then we would just put in another hole in our sinking ship. Our creativity now lies in three players, Seedorf, Pirlo and Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho is a big questionmark as his party life seems to be still there and Seedorf have been one of our worst performers the last two years. Also with one or two injuries... Pirlo is our most safe creative players and just getting a replacement isn't easy.

also lets not forget:
We sold Kaka, no replacement, haven't used the money for him.
We sold Gourcuff, no replacement, haven't used the money for him.
Selling Pirlo and you think we will buy someone like Fabregas suddenly?

Isn't it really worrying that we sell off all creative genius players?
Also seems like Leon trust in Pirlo.

Forward and fullback is a given. Another creative midfielder would be nice. Instead of Seedorf or kicking our party boy I could accept. Not Maestro.

Central def is the position we need a new player in least. If we buy one we need to sell two CBs and we have problems selling even one. Our starting CB partnership is already clear and we have some decent backups. Kaladze is a disaster now and should not be close to playing ever again.

I agree with fullback and forward, Borriello doesn't have enough to play as a starter for me and our fullbacks are shameful. I also agree that Seedorf or Dinho would be better gotten rid of before Pirlo (at this point none of them should go unless we definitely get someone).

I agree and disagree about the CBs. We definitely need new CBs, as after Nesta and Thiago we look terrible (only Bonera provides any hope). However, you're right we need to sell before buying. Onyewu was a mistake for me and we should have sold Kaladze immediately this summer. I'd rather we never gotten Onyewu, sold Kaladze and spent a little to bring in Santacroce. Nesta's fitness is still an issue and Thiago's still a questionmark (he looks good, but has a tendency to drift out of position from what I've seen). For that reason we really need a player capable of filling their shoes and right now the best option is Bonera, which is hardly comforting.

Most probably Pirlo will go very soon for 18-20 million.

For this sum of money i think it is good to let him go, as this is the best time to do so.

I am more positive now that Milan will get the new players wanted by Leonardo.

I heard Berlusconi on the telephone on Milan Channel and assured the fans that Milan will be competitive and fight for the scudetto this season.
And buying our players as our new policy without spending enormous sums of money which he called it madness in such an economic crises.

its not the right timing to sell anyone anymore..we cannot afford to loose pirlo too(after kaka, paolo, becks, even gorky) we cannot sell 5 starters for eg and get 5 others, that would be amateur management..

we have some players that can contribute on many ways, and pirlo is one of them he has the epxerience to learn and help newcomers..

besides that he is one of our few quality players left, have you ever thought that if dinho or seedorf got injured then we'd have only one creative medfilder in our squad(dont tell me abate or di gennaro seriously)for who knows how many matches on a row..

for me, selling players(especcially starters, whoever they are, even seedorf/pirlo) is OFF the table..

we need 4 decent signings to compete for serie a..
we need 2 to stay in touch with ch.l. quality..
anything less or else is not good enough..

if we can be a solid LB (Bale, Grosso, etc), Hernandes, a striker for depth (Bendtner? hopefully on loan) and maybe a backup keeper that has talent and i think we will be in pretty good shape next year. then we can use Dzeko's buyout clause and we would be on our way to having a world class team again

I think we CAN afford to lose Pirlo. I have not seen a consistent, hard-working Pirlo since two years ago. I think we're better off selling him for good money, and building a new midfield unit with 2 strong DM's and a more "complete" midfielder player who can push up and attack as well as sit back and defend.

I agree with the above except that I would prefer 1 strong DM and two complete midfielders, otherwise our attack would be easily stifled, as it is currently.

I still think Pirlo is fundamental to our side, but if the right price comes in, we shouldn't be stubborn...... Hopefully a deal will see a new player come in a swap, bcs as we have seen beofre, MGT doesn't know how to properly invest money they recieve, and it ends up going towards a fancy piece of jewlery Berlu buys for one of his friend's daughter!

i'm watching the juve - real game... juve are such a good team and that's without diego/sissoko on the field... wow they really have an absolutely superb team.. i hope they have a good run in the CL cause really Italy needs to do well there... but I wonder where did they sh*t all that money from? again it leads me to think what the fk is goin on at Milan!

Fiat is going well. Owners pump in money. simple.

Also, Juventus never lose against Real Madrid. Like we never lose Lazio.

Sick of reading this stuff, but neither bale or grosso are solid players. grosso only does well for italy, and bale is horrendous. Stop mentioning them in connection with Milan please.

I still don't know why Carlo wants Pirlo so much. He's got so many top midfielders at his disposal in Chelsea---Lampard, Deco, Ballack, Essien, Mikel, etc..

And honestly, I think Pirlo will die in the premier league, with the pace and the strong tackles, he'll be running backwards rather than forwards. But hey, if CHelsea want to spend big on him, then so be it. I think we should sell him ASAP and buy Hernanes.

I think the only reason can only be that Pirlo's vision is better than any of these players. There has to be something that Pirlo can offer that none of these players can offer, otherwise Carlo won't be screaming for Pirlo.

But again, only if it fits with Carlo's tactics, just like why he wanted Drogba so badly when he was at Milan, rather than Huntelaar and the like.

If you look at all the game that Milan plays, other team also put a lot of pressure on Pirlo (because all teams know that he is so critical to Milan, presumably). Being slow and stuff is one thing: being able to hold the ball and control the tempo of the game is another. Carlo needed so much of ball possession in his game that having Pirlo, who has all the skills and techniques in the world, should fit his style extremely well.

That's, of course, my guess.

Pirlo 20m and pizarro(never know if we might need him) use 20m for huntelaar, some left over + what we've made for our kaka sale for fabiano, making sure we're safe no matter what with strikers then buy hernanes because of his unbelievably cheap price tag for the type of player he is and get a cb.

Wait, you think we should sell Pirlo and get THREE prima punta? If anything we need some seconda punta, not to have five prima punta in the team.

I think it will be good thing to sell Pirlo - but for the right price. 20 millions is a bargain. If we could sell Pirlo and buy Fabregas without further investment, then Galliani would finally do some phenomenal stuff. Pirlo is the best playmaker in the world still, but, let's face it, he didn't perform for Milan for almost two years. And he's 30 years old. Fabregas on the other hand is 22, he's eager to win, and with right players around him he'll be new Pirlo in two years, but with half Pirlo's wages. Buying Flamini as potential Gattuso's replacement was thinking in the right direction and now we should continue with that point. The next player we should think of, maybe in January or June of next year, is possibly Hernanes, on Seedorf's place. I'm sure he would cost us no more than 15 millions. With the younger striker we will (I hope) buy this month, that's midfield and attack strongly regenerated, without any player older than 25-26, except Ronaldinho (you need some experienced players too, right ) and possibly that striker, for no more than 40 millions. Hoping we would sell some players with big wages, unuseful ones, like Dida for example, the sum on a longer period would be 15-20 mills.

WOO HOO Pirlo is staying!!!

06-08-2009, 07:19
I think Pirlo staying is the easy choice - so we don't have to spend any money on 'big' signings. No doubt we'll still take some driftwood like Ledesma or someone else another team doesn't want.

It seems to me that Leonardo had his ideas of how the team should play and slowly he's being forced to play the 'old' way.

Even if Pirlo does stay, it honestly shouldn't stop us from getting some strong competition for his place. Does he really deserve a starting position? I'm not sure he does. Is he the future of the team? Surely we have to start thinking of a new strategy with the midfield because in both quality and ideas it's mediocre with few bright sparks.

Berlusconi had put Pirlo on the Transfer market because his wage is about 13 million Gross per year, and now he was convinced by Galliani and Leonardo that to remain competitive only Fabregas can replace him (35m), so Berlusconi now took him off the mercato as it is cheaper to keep Andrea.

For me it was better to sell Pirlo +15 million and get Fabregas, but I'm not in Berlusconi's pocket.

You have source for that (the bold part)? The last edition Milan players wages I read, Pirlo was not in the 50 highest salaries of football players for season 2008/09 (number 50 was 4,6 mil euros, I assume this is a nett salary).

The last wages from Pirlo I remember was 4 mil euros nett.

So, assuming Pirlo was a first-team and key player of Milan, 4 million is a normal wages (if we compare to other key players of big clubs, this is a cheap enough salary).

If the news can be trusted that Pirlo was valued so cheap, I choose the option we hold him in Milan but there must be a player that can compete with him (like Flamini last year compete with Gattuso) so that he can't just play like he wants but he also maintain his good-great form. This player should be also able to play beside Pirlo.

As Siregar and others allude to I am concerned about the number of games Pirlo can be effective. Fabregas to Milan is fantasy, we need a Pirlo type who is a backup player especially if the new system still requires his role to be as important.

Pirlo's net wage is 6 million. Infact Chelsea offered him the same money but a longer contract.
If it was 4 million it will still be in the new wage bracket system introduced lately by Berlusconi, and therefor would never end on the transfer list.

I read that Galliani reached an agreement with Wenger on a fee of 35 million and had the permission to talk to the player. This agreement needed only the approval of Berlusconi. This was on the Agenda during the meeting between Berlu, Galliani and Leonardo.

No Pirlo's wage is 6 million clean.

It has been reported various times by various publications, including Gazzetta. Dinho's is 6.5 million clean I think.

Milan

The bold part says that Pirlo will keep his 6 million salary at Milan.

Strange. I tried to google and found goal.com article (source (http://www.goal.com/en/news/8/main/2008/07/06/765190/calcio-debate-should-pirlo-be-paid-as-much-as-kaka)). Yes, we know how credible goal.com is. But anyway, it said that Pirlo wage is around 4 mil euros, just like his 2007/08 wage.

Seedorf can adequately fill his role if need be. I would also venture the idea of changing the midfield shape if Pirlo is out. Something like..

Abate---Rino---Flamini

Where Abate and Flamini have some freedom to move up. We saw a similar midfield against Boca with....

Rino----Pirlo----Abate

Bear in mind Rino can also play Pirlo's role at times.

No. He never played his "role". He played in his position which is another thing entirerly. It is not possible for this current Gattuso to play the same role as Pirlo. That role is getting the ball and delivering it to players in a good position and to control the tempo. Gattuso wins the ball and deliver the ball to anyone he can possibly reach.
