To me there are only two really true Milan legends:

Franco Baresi

Paolo Maldini

San Franco and San Paolo are definitely two of Milan's biggest legends Nona, but to forget other players, such as Rivera for example, would be unfair. I guess it is understandable that some of those that never witnessed him in his 'Milan days' think less of him when compared to our last and current captain. I, for example, never saw him playing, but I have a very high opinion of him because I know of his accomplishments with Milan. He was a great player and a great captain.

Rivera -> Baresi -> Maldini .....three legendary captains

Surely right.
But still I think Baresi and Maldini the only true legends because, as far as I know, only those two played always and only for Milan.....or am I wrong ?

again and again...I do not understand why Alessandro Costacurta is so underestimated... why??? I do not say that you, my dear amigo, do that only... but it is a mass phenomenon... why always people see only Maldini? Why? This is the question, for which I desperatly need answer.

underestimate San Billy??? never! if you would know me well enough, you would know that for me there are three players that represent what being a Milan legend is all about, San Franco, San Paolo and San Billy.

I mentioned Rivera, and not Costacurta, in order to make a point. My point being that maybe we consider certain recent and current Milan players more "legendary" than past ones, simply because we never witnessed them playing (like Rivera, I never watched him playing), while on the other hand most of us witnessed Baresi and luckily we are still watching Maldini and Costacurta playing.

Billy played one season away from Milan, in 1986/87, when he played for Monza in Serie C1. But still, he has always been, and remains, a true Rossonero. He and Paolo hold the record of seven Serie A titles won...and besides, he will still be able to celebrate one more this season

Unless you consider the few game Gianni played for Alessandria at the age of 15, he started with Milan, and retired with Milan....he played (always for Milan) from 1960 to 1979, playing 501 Serie A games and scoring 124 goals

Strictly speaking, San Paolo and San Franco were the only two who played at Milan from the very beggining to the end (well, Maldini is still far from the finish line)....or I am wrong? someone please correct me if I am. Anyway, I still remember Berlu saying he felt like retiring too when Baresi announced his retirement ....what a great captain, just like to captain and vice-captain we have now.... San Franco, San Paolo and San Billy true Milan legends

yeah, Billy played that season away but it was not his fault, he was forced to do that -- he was loaned. Honesltly, I do not remember Baresi clarely.... only few matches watched while him playing... and feel I missed a lot....

I do admit that Baresi and Maldini are real leagends of MILAN, however Costacurta is esteemed most by myself.

San Billy IS a real Milan legend

After Rivera, Baresi, San Paolo and San Billy....who shall be our next legendary captain?? I absolutely don't mean any disrespect to any of our current captain candidates, but none can fully fill in for San Paolo/San Billy.....however, I am sure whoever is choosen will be a great captain as well. Anyway, San Paolo still has 10 more years ahead of him, so no need to think about that yet

So now is a serious problem -- we do not have a player who was playing for Milan his entire career. And I should say that it is a tendency. I bet we would never have true milanista as a captain in future if we continue our transfer politics. IMO AC Milan captain should be italian.

i partially agree. I think its essential that the captain speaks Italian fluently but that doesnt neccesarily mean an Italian would always be my choice. As long as the player is 100% commited and has the respect of his teammates then i would back them for the job.

An example could be Sheva, as far as i know he speaks good Italian now (?) and he certainly has the respect of the team. he would probably be my 4th choice at present (behind Maldini, Nesta and Gattuso) but if for some reason Carlo decided to give him the honour then i wouldnt be against it

I don't care about the captain's nationality...that shouldn't be an issue. Whoever deserves it the most and whoever can effectively guide the team could be our captain, regardless of where he is from.

But still, Italians or not, I don't see one player in the current squad who has the same influence, leadership, AND many other characteristics that made Baresi, and make Maldini and Costacurta, such great captains.

Rino, Sheva, Nesta, Ambro, etc, etc, have all certain characteristics that are very important in a captain, but none has them all as San Paolo and San Billy (or San Franco in his time).

Still, whoever is our next captain (although Maldini is far from the finish line ) will certainly be a great leader to the team, I am optimistic about that....it just won't be quite the same.

FORZA MILAN!!!

I think it can be many players but Gatusso is the right choice! I like this guy and he is leader after Maldini! Though Sheva can be good captain to! Anyway let`s talk about legends and not abt Captain!

Yep, Gattuso's also my choice for next captain. Everyone was saying it was Ambro, until he couldn't hold down a first team spot and was even on the verge of leaving once. Other conteders will be Rui, Sheva and Nesta and maybe Pirlo. But Rui might be leaving soon as well. This is of course after Maldini and Billy leave. But my choice's still Gattuso, and I'm sure he'll improve by that time.

Btw, it's alright to talk about our future captains here. Cuz they're all legends in the making .
