Psychological impact of Istanbul confirmed

DE MICHELIS: 'Now Istanbul is an asset'
9/4/2005
MILAN - Milan's psychologist, Bruno De Michelis, explained how to overcome the Istanbul syndrome on the pages of Gazzetta dello Sport: 'Have you seen that t-shirt that they made in English with the Gazzetta title? Yes, Milan in a bad dream. I would like to make all forty of them wear it. That final loss was an episode that has become an asset. And that t-shirt apparently scratched what must become the overriding idea, which is to take that event with a sense of humor. I will go even farther to say that I am going to put that t-shirt under the jersey on the evening of the finals in Paris. Yes, because we will arrive there!'

That will be hilarious - if they wear that shirt under the jersey lol. and then win it and take it off and show everyone. the liverpool fans will be gutted

Milan have to use this moment to come back STRONGER and win both the CL and the scudetto. Heck, even the Coppa Italia! We have to have all three badges on our shirts next year. That will show all those people who made those stupid tshirts lol.

I hope the psychologist can do a good job and motivate the team more, starting against Siena, Milan can show there intentions for the season.

There is no question that there has been significant psychological damage to recover from, insofar as the players and coach are concerned with regard to Istanbul, and I am very happy the head shrink has made these confident statements.

The human brain is a strage organ however, and if a repeat were to reoccur in Paris, or the beginning of a collapse may be the better descriptor, then who knows what will happen? One thing I am confident of is that no one will know exactly how the team will react until the situation commences to resemble the fatal 6 minutes.

What concerns me more is that if we do reach the final, and go ahead, even by 2 goals say..and the losing team rallies to score, is that Carlo will be in "brain freeze" again, and not make immediate substitutions to rectify matters...if that is what it would take so to do..

Because psychology is so important, I maintain my belief that if the players on the pitch in Istabul had seen the bench warming up after the first goal (conceded), we may not have conceded 2 more...as the possibility of one of them coming off in a final would so motivate them to play their best, and change the coaches mind, that the other goals probably wouldnt have gone in...but again, thats just my opinion...

Add to that the impact that the potential for immediate subs would have had on Liverpool, seeing someone like...I dunno...Rui Costa...or pick a name anyone..coming off the bench, could possibly have them second guessing themselves, or performing other mental gymnastics, the end result being loss of concentration on getting back into the game...

Basically, putting the entire bench out there to warm up would have sent a message to Benetez and Liverpool, that ok, we are ready and prepared for this eventuallity, and in a few minutes, we are going to solve the problem.

I am not as confident of us reaching Paris as I was before the transfer window closed, what with our not purchasing an out and out defender, and Jankulovski´s recent injury in the WC Qualifier vs the Chech Rep, underscores the lack of quality cover we have in that area of the squad.

If we do get there, and we do take the lead, it is anyone´s guess what will happen for the remainder of the match...Stam for me, is the real guilty party for our not winning anything this term, as the mistakes made vs Juve, and the Gerrard header were both his mistakes, and I am anxious to see how he himself has recovered this term, and if he still tends to leave strikers too much space in the box.

Many will point out that the midfield wasnt doing their job...my response to that is this: The midfield dont mark strikers in the box, Central Defenders do...

But back to the mind, and the mind game the final (if we get there) will represent:

Ultimately, I feel that should we concede, Carlo has the responsibility to get us back on track, him first (via screaming and/or calm instructions to the captain from the touch line, immediate subs, or another smoke) then the team.

But then, thats just my few cents worth of opinion...

I have a question . . .

what happens if a team wins the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia is there an Supercup game? If so who plays in the game seeing as how the Supercup is a match between the Scudetto winner and the Coppa Italia winner?

As far as I know, the match is then played between the league winner and the runner-up in the cup.

We need a nutter of a psychologist like that. I like his attitude. If the team listens to this bugger seriously then next year this time we will be Campioni d'Europa!
