you don't have to be best buddies... but you could just ignore each other, or eventually try to just get along and put all this behind...

rezag...what about avatars?

Let me point out that both avatars of mk18, (though not specifically for me) and rae (this in particular) can be considered offensive.

In fact, the sight of the confederate flag sickens me....but then maybe this is the point that rae is trying to make...(since I could care less about the Israeli flag being burnt, but a Jewish fan may have the direct opposite view point).

While I dont like prohibiting anything..some things at times have to have limits, and until the signature issue can be resolved (I like Jim_UK´s idea) then, I am afraid it would have to stay this way.

As for me asking to have rae change his avatar, at this point, I wont bother...if he wants to identify with a set of states that wanted, and were willing not only to form a new country, but also to fight and die for, the perpetuation of slavery, then thats on him, and his concience.

I'll agree somewhat to what you are saying Warro. These avatars draw a deal of emotions to which some folks if not all will be offended at them.

Again I'll agree... somewhat of course. Like you I dont like prohibiting things such as avatars. I think the epitome of tolerance happens when offensive symbols are brushed off by us and the individual's right of expression is protected for whatever he/she wants to believe in.

Again I'll agree, albeit... somewhat. Neither you or me have the pre-eminent right to say such a symbol has a certain meaning. To me and you Warro, the Stars and Bars may be a symbol to perpetuate racism/slavery and be deemed offensive. Is this an actual fact? There are many who display this symbol and are not in any way supportive of the legacy of slavery or racism. I think the avatar issue if offensive to some has nothing to do with the symbol itself. It has a lot to do with how people think about it and what that symbol means. Well any particular symbol means a whole lot of different things to any number of people. Why is the right of my or your sensibilties to such a symbol more important than the feeling of the one displaying that certain symbol? That would depend on assumptions. Dangerous assumptions and perhaps inaccurate assumptions of such a person. This bodes true to mk18's right to display whatever avatar he chooses to have. I may disagree emphatically with it, but what I think of mk18's avatar may be a totally different view of what he feels about it. Therefore I have no right to bully my view as correct and mk18's view as wrong. That can be discussed through thoughtful and respectful debate with the hope that there can be a consensus somewhere in between.

Lastly... Rae perhaps you should take the high road on this and change your avatar. mk was gentlemanly enough and did this by changing his. I sure hope mk's wasnt forcibly removed. If it was, perhaps we should be fair across the board about this avatar thing as Warro/Jaime and whoever has suggested. It can go either way... totally eliminate the avatars or be liberatarian about it. I'll trust in the Admins discretion regarding this.

Well, Doc, Rezag had alot fo good points he needed to get across. You'd think that eventually all parties would see that they place us all in difficult positions doing things like they have been doing.

You see, when we discovered years ago we could allow avatars we thought wow, that's cool, it'll let people do something fun here on the forums. Unfortunately, within about a year of adding avatars, people decided to use them for other purposes. We do not have to have avatars, that's something special we thought people would like to have. Now we're getting pushed into having to make some decisiomns. Do we take avatars away totally? Rez and I mentioned that to each other yesterday. It would be a shame to have to do so, same as it's a shame we decided to shut off signatures for a short time. I don't want to have to come across like some dictator, but these forums aren't a playground for people to abuse. So...we've got some decisions to make, but I also look at it as members have some thinking to do. It only takes a couple people....

It's not about who's been here longest Doc, if it was then all the people who joined in 1999 would be moderators.

Milano, mods are picked on recommendation and proving themselves as level-headed and fairly smart. Basically, people who have proven themselves as capable and reasonable people.

Despite Sant being here for a short time, he has managed to integrate well into the forums, been a regular poster and has made intelligent discussion, never losing control of his temper.

Doc, when people continually ASK to be made mods or when they make it clear very early in their posting here that that's their goal, that's not a good thing. It's not at all what I look for in a potential mod.

As for SANT, he has shown alot of the qualities we need in mods such as being level-headed, having a mature attitude, even some intangible things like simply being a good poster. People in this thread have been patting you on the back, telling you things....but this constant harping about it... it's not what you need to be doing.
