I never got real clear on that cup-tied rule, but I think Amelia will be available for CL games as now the UEFA cup and CL are seen as two separate competitions ... not 100% sure though.
If he turns out to be cup tied, we would either get Abiatti back from his loan to Torino or could go for someone like Pagliuca.

I think Amelia is a great goalkeeper and it would be just great if we manage to get him.

I don't want Abiatti back simply cause I never feel comfortable with him in goal. He is not a long-term solution anyway which may be what we need at this point if this injury really voids the attempt at extending Dida's contract.

bring in amelia or frey (probably even better than the italian). both i think have a bright future and would strenghten us.

sorrentino or peruzzi as back up and we are fine in that department.

Two questions. How old is Sorrentino? Is Hildebraand still a good goalkeeper?

sorrentino is 27 years old ( born on 28.03.1979), 185 cm tall and till 2010 contracted to aek.

hildebrand is a ok - good keeper but like abbiati always good for a howler but he is by no means good enough to be our first choice keeper.

Dida should be available for the CL. Don't forget that those games are at the end of February which is actually 3 months away from now, so cup tied keepers are not a problem as Dida should be healthy untill then. So we should go for a short term replacement now and then get a long term solution in the summer if Dida doesn't stay.
Of course then with long term injuries it is always a question how the player will respond after the injury and in what kind of form he will return. I would go for Toldo. He would welcome first team football and I actually don't think that Inter would mind loaning him to us. It will be a solution for all three parties. I don't see any of the other clubs giving us their starting keepers on a loan, because they won't gain anything. Unless we make a bid for their starting GK, they won't loan their starters to us and getting a second string keeper from a small side is not like those are any better then Fiori and Kalac. The only team out there now that has a great GKthat is not starting is Inter. That's why I think Toldo may be a solution untill late February.

Hilberbrand is great,frey is great too,but i think both of them are first team at the club.

I think that we need to buy Amelia, cause we can calculate on him also as a striker

yes, you are right about this.
However, the UEFA CL regulations would still allow us to field Amelia because UEFA allows CL teams to add 3 new players to their team lists - of course the total # of players still has to be at most 25 - before the first knock-out stage (deadline for this is Feb 1, 2007).
The thing is that 1 of these 3 players could be a player who has played in UEFA club competitions for another club, provided that:
1) the player has NOT played for another club in the same competition and
2) the player has NOT played for another club, which is currently in the same competition.
Amelia would meet both these requirements and would be available for CL games. Sorentino, however, will not be elligible.

I was also reading article 15 of UEFA regulations, and until i got to point 15.18, it seemed like players who played in UEFA Cup won't be allowed to play in CL in later stages, but point 18 of the article explains it very well.
Amelia, and every other player who played in UEFA ( among them there are some very attractive possibile signings like Daniel Alves from Sevilla), will be allowed to play in Champions league in February !
