With the new Serie A season around the corner, Goal.com looks at what clubs have been up to, and how they are shaping up for 38 rounds of action. In this part, we consider AC Milan, who go into this season with essentially the same squad from last season...

That AC Milan had a successful season last year, there are no questions about. However, just as certain is the fact that there were questions aplenty about this squad, questions which were pertinently raised when the Rossoneri stood exposed last season.

A fabulous Champions League triumph has sent ripples of joy through everyone connected with the club, but also glossed over some rather big deficiencies. Most Milan fans, while confident their veterans will come good again, have a worry deep down that injuries and fatigue could make for a very worrying season.

Pato came along, but will not be available until January. Then, after Carlo Ancelotti vehemently denying that any more signings were needed, Emerson has finally been drafted in to add much needed cover to the midfield.

However, the biggest concern remains, and that is the rather soft defence.

Why? AC Milan will play a total of 65 games during the season if they make it to the final of all the tournaments they are playing in, and a bare minimum of 55. Just how many of them will Paolo Maldini feature in? 25? The veteran skipper is unlikely to play two games a week when he makes his comeback, and there is a good chance that aches and niggles will cost him a few weekends too.

And what about Alessandro Nesta? Despite his international retirement, there is absolutely no guarantee of him being able to feature in anything more than 30-35 games. That makes 55-60, just about covering one of the two centre-half positions.

They have likes of Simic, Kaladze and Bonera for cover, but when you see the kind of defenders that moved this summer - Chivu and Milito to name but two - it is almost flabbergasting to grasp that the Rossoneri were never even in the market.

Assume that seven months from now, Milan are involved in two Champions League ties against Chelsea, punctuated by domestic clashes against Inter and Palermo. Crunch European games, make-or-break domestic ties - which of them would you rest Maldini and Nesta for?

Clearly, it's a problem. Yet for some reason, Milan still choose to worry about the number of strikers they have!

Many agree that the way Milan played in the Champions League was more than perfect; the 4-4-1-1 formation worked so well for them, and it helped them defeat Europe’s best teams and claim European glory. Given as they will probably play just the one in front of Kaka again, they already have options. Inzaghi is a great number two for Ronaldo, and Gilardino a number three of luxury.

If they have to worry about any position, they might as well worry about Kaka's substitutes, having missed the opportunity to ease Gourcuff into the first team last season. There are irreplaceable players in every team, but surely at a club as big as Milan, there has to be a back-up plan. Pato is great, but it is probably a little to early to expect him to replace Kaka.

It now seems more likely that Carlo will play two forwards, with Seedorf in a roaming role behind them, should the Brazilian playmaker pick up an injury. Not a bad solution, but Milan will hope that does not happen before a big game.

A pattern seems to be emerging: Milan will have to hope for too many things going their way. You always need some luck, but there are misfortunes you can plan for. Chelsea, Barcelona and Inter are some of the teams who have their backs covered. With a couple of "smart" signings, Milan could have been among them.

Milan have a fabulous team, but a squad that is not strong enough for a club of their stature. In far too many positions, the fans will have to pray they get lucky and avoid injuries. If they don't, questions will be asked of why the Rossoneri have been the quietest of the big clubs in the European transfer market. But if they do, this will be another glorious season.

Notwithstanding which way it goes, the fact remains that it is a risk they could have done without!

Look at their options at full-back: Oddo, Cafu, Jankulovski, Serginho, Kaladze. That is the way it is done! That is what you call depth, depth sufficient for five competitions. That is the way it needs to be all over the pitch. Andrea Barzagli and Fernando Meira are still very much available for around 12-15 million euros! Better late than never!

Rossoneri legend Ruud Gullit is reported to have personally recommended the free-scoring 24-year-old to his former employers, and Milan’s strong Dutch connection could give them the edge over fellow suitors Juventus and Real Madrid.



Huntelaar put his disappointment at being left out of the Netherlands squad on Friday behind him with a highly impressive four-goal haul during Ajax’s rout of De Graafschap on the weekend. He is said to be eager to stick it out in Amsterdam for another year before making the inevitable move to one of Europe’s top leagues, but there are signs that a big-money transfer within this August is a possibility.

Lijep tekst ali se dosta toga zasniva na onom "ako".. Ako ovo,ako ono. Real je pokriven na svim pozicijama - igračkim ali sumnjam da je trener dobar izbor. Man.Utd. je isto pokriven na svim pozicijama ali šta se događa...odjednom veliki broj ozljeda pa su sad u panici. Chelsea ima dosta veliki izbor ali isto ozljede. Jednostavno da kupimo Barzaglia,Baptistu,Modrića i Hunteelara...opet se mogu ozljedit pa da upadnemo u probleme. Može se dogodit da imamo sreće s ozljedama pa da se niko osim Ronalda kroz sezonu ne muči s ozljedama osim njega. Sve je to jedno veliko "ako". Milan ima svoju politiku koje se striktno drže...možde se nekome od nas ne sviđa...kako god - DONOSI REZULTATE.

mislim da je tekst ispravan, to sam i ja tvrdio kada sam govorio da je milan prosle sezone izgubio serie a vec u jedanaestom mjesecu kad je pol momcadi bilo ozljedeno...milan lab jest najbolji na svijetu, ali nije svemoguci pa da moze omoguciti igracima od 35 godina s potrosenim koljenima da odigraju 50 utakmica godisnje..i to je cinjenica, zato sam govorio da su nam potrebne kupovine, ne zbog gomilanja super zvijezda, nego zbog pokrivenosti pozicija
prosle smo sezone odigrali najbolje utakmice pred kraj sezone, od bayerna, preko manchestera i liverpoola, bas kada smo imali sve igrace na raspolaganju

Huntelar bi po meni bio vrh pojacanje!Bilo bi dobro kada bismo ga kupili.

Real potrosio 120 miliona na pojacanja ove sezone!Mislim po tom pitanju su CAREVI(iako sam siguran da nista nece osvojiti).Nije mi jasno kako mogu da potrose tolike pare kad kupuju na kredit!Ko je lud da ti da tolike pare,ipak su oni 'drzavni' klub!

Real je toliko smijesan klub, da bih mogao o tome esej napisat..

recimo, prosle sezone su kupili cannavara,emersona,diarru,reyesa,van nistelrooya,cassana,gagu,higuaina da bi posramljeni ispali od jadnog bayerna u ligi prvaka i nekako ajd osovjili to prvenstvo jer je barcelona uspjela bit jos jadnija od njih..

i sto mi je bilo najsmjesnije, uzeli su broj helgueri, covjeku koji je vec deset godina u klubu da bi ga dali diarri.

i onda ovo ljeto promijene trenera, dovedu
saviolu,pepea,metzeldera,drenthea,sneijdera, robbena,dudeka i sta ja znam koga jos da bi im sevilla zabila 5 golova na bernabeu

znam,ovo nema prevelike veze s milanom, ali me post kolege r-15 potako da nest napisem, jer mi je taj real zaista,poslije intera, najjadniji i najsmjesniji klub..o njima mogu uvijek nest napisat heeh

upravo to , jedan od razloga zasto volim milan dovlace mnogo igraca, prava familija

Mislim da milan za ovu sezonu treba da dovede jos
dva mladja igraca,i to odbranbene,jer nam je odbrana
stvarno mnogo stara...i da pitam da li neko zna da li
ce broj ''3''da se povuce iz upotrebe sledece sezone,jer sam cuo da ce paolov sin da ga nosi kad stase naravno....

upravo tako broj 3 je rezervisan za njegovog sina i uopste porodicu maldini a 6ica je davno "zaledjena" u cast velikom Baresiju

Moram sve ovo komentirati malo

Počnimo s Huntelaarom: To ne da je dobar igrač, to je FANTASTIČAN IGRAČ! Taj čovjek je 5 puta opasniji od Gilardina i jako nalkuje Pippu. Ima šut glavom i super je u 16-ercu, ali se i u igri solidno snalazi. Ima i dobar šut sa distance za razliku od Pippa i Gile. No, 110% sam siguran da je mercato za Milan gotov, osim ako je nešto baš jako pošlo po zlu sa Ronaldom pa su shvatilida ne mogu igrati sa 2 napadača pola sezone. Ali dolazak Huntelaara bi bio genijalan potez. Bio bi to početak novog Milana sa Kakom, Patom, Huntelaarom, Giliom...

Ovaj tekst sam pročitao i moram reći da se ne slažem jer se ovdje ne radi o manageru pa da se igrači skupljaju kao u igrici. Postoje ljudi koji su već dugo u klubu, određena hijerarhija unutar Milanella itd. Mi smo europski prvaci i jedino što smo trebali napraviti a nismo je jedan lijevi bek. Doveli smo Pata koji je ovdje da zamjeni Shevu, Pato je najbolji mladi napadač na svijetu, nije li to dobar potez?? Doveli smo Emersona koji ima 31 god i prošlo ljeto kada je otišao u Madrid bio je jedan od najboljih veznih na svijetu, on je još uvijek vrhunski igrač. Istina je da imamo puno starih igrača koji se lako ozljeđuju, i kao sto Goeff kaže ako nam se par igrača ozlijedi opet ćemo izgubiti scudetto do Božića. A ... jebiga, tak je to ... Treba bit zadovoljan i s ovim, imali smo dobre pripreme i dug odmor za razliku od prošle godine.

Real Madrid... CIRKUS! Nemojte se uopće obazirati na njih. Ovo će najvjerojatnije bit njihova postava za ovu sezonu:

TO je dobra ekipa, tu su još Metzelder, Marcelo, Gago, Raul, Saviola... Ali nisu jači od Milana. A i ta obrana ne može izdržat protiv našeg napada ili npr. Barce.

Od svih klubova sviojeta mislim da je jedino Brca ove sezone stvarno jača od Milana.

Dajte ljudi,svi mi volimo Milan ali moramo biti realni!Chelse,Real,Man utd,Barca,to su klubovi koji imaju jace sastave od nas.Ne mozete vi racunati da su Cafu,Serginho,Maldini.... oni isti igraci od pre 2-3 godine,da jesu onda bi ste bili u pravu,da je Barca samo jaca.Ovako moramo da se molimo da nam se igraci ne povrede da bi mogli da vezu 30-35 utakmica,mislim da ovako veliki klub kao sto je Milan to sebi ne bi smeo da dopusti.Razmislite malo,ako nam je prosle sezone u Decembru bilo povredjeno 6-oro igraca,mislite da ce ove sezone biti bolje?Ne,bice jos gore jer su ti igraci jos stariji.Sad ako pogledamo imamo mi sansi da sledaca sezona bude dobra:da Real ne uigra svoje 'zvezdice'(a verovatno nece jer im je trener katastrofa,u sustini taj tim bi mogli da uigraju samo Capelo i Lippy),da Mancester nastavi da igra ovako lose(sto se nece desiti jer imaju trenera koji vec 20 godina vodi taj klub.Sta mislite da ce se desiti kad se runi i tevez,ronaldo,nani i anderson uigraju.Ubijace sve redom.),da u Barci ne uspeju da upare svoju "fantasticnu cetvorku"(i to je tesko verovati jer je Rajkard odlican trener,mislim pogledajte Barsinu predproslu sezonu,titula u prvenstvu i liga sampiona!),da se u Chelsiu posvadjaju Murinho i Abramovic.E sad mi recite koje su nam sanse da sledeca sezona bude dobra,ako ne dovedemo napadaca i odbrambrenog igraca?Po mojoj proceni jedno 20-30%!
