Galliani Tells Ronaldo: Get Fit Or You're Off
Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani has issued a thinly-veiled warning to Ronaldo that if he doesn’t overcome his injury problems he will be leaving the club.

‘El Fenomeno’ is having a miserable time of things at the moment and has played just one time this season due to injury.



The latest problem occurred while warming up before the Champions League clash with Benfica.



This ruled him out of last week’s FIFA Club World Cup, and will also see him miss this Sunday’s Milan derby.



Ronaldo’s contract with the Rossoneri runs out in June, and there have been strong reports that he will not be offered a renewal unless he can prove his fitness.



"He will have to work hard to regain his place,” said Galliani.



“Next year we will have six attackers. There are already five, the sixth will be Ronaldo, if he is fit. If not him, then there'll be another."



Teenage wonderkid Alexandre Pato will be available to play for Milan from January onwards, following his summer move from Internacional.



The striker has not been eligible thus far as he was still under-18 when the transfer was completed in August.

Marco Materazzi has surprisingly declared his Inter side to be underdogs in Sunday’s Milan derby.

The pugnacious stopper is nearing full fitness after a long period suffering with an injury sustained during Italy’s friendly with Hungary in September.

Inter won both derbies during last term’s Scudetto procession, but Materazzi is adamant that they don’t approach the game as favourites.

“They are the favourites,” the ex-Everton man told Sky Sport Italia. “Milan are the champions of the world and we will have to be at our best.

“But both sides go into this game on level terms and taking on the best will be a big incentive for me.

“On a personal level, my fitness is good. A player like me can’t be 100 per cent physically. You just have to use the mentality, the drive and the passion to make up for it.”

Materazzi scored the winner in Inter’s dramatic 4-3 win last year and dedicated the goal to his son.

“It was special because my son had asked me for a goal and it’s tough for a defender to score in any game, let alone the derby,” he recalls.

“However, I think that it was fate. I hope that this year destiny has reserved me another important role in this game.”

Milan Look For New Start In Serie A

Last Sunday Milan became the first European side to lift the Club World Cup, the trophy that replaced the Intercontinental Cup on a permanent basis in 2005.
It was the culmination of a marvellous year for the Rossoneri on the international stage, and it was the only trophy that Carlo Ancelotti hadn’t yet won in his six years with Milan.
Following defeats in the 1993, 1994, and 2003 Intercontinental Cup finals, the Milan management set its main objective for this season to be the Japan-based trophy.
Mission accomplished, but at what cost? Although the players delivered in the two decisive games, beating Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds 1-0 in the semi-final and Boca Juniors 4-2 in the final, considering the relatively weak opposition perhaps the competition was given too much emphasis at the start of the season.
Vice-president Adriano Galliani and coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed shortly after the victory in Yokohama that they had asked the team explicitly during the summer training camp to focus their attention on this trophy, and that, perhaps, is a big reason why they have so far been so disappointing in Serie A.
Incredibly enough, they have yet to win a home game in the league this season, drawing with the likes of Parma, Catania and Torino, and losing to lowly Empilo in front of their own fans.

Although they have three games in hand, due to their involvement in the Club World Cup, they are currently 22 points off their opponents on Sunday and are in 12th place.
While Ancelotti probably won’t be all that upset about the team’s defeat on Thursday night in the Coppa Italia at home against Catania (1-2), against whom he fielded several youth team and second-string players, it was once again an ominous sign.
In any case, he will hope that the team can muster up enough concentration and motivation to beat “small clubs” like Catania in the remainder of the season.
Their chances to reach Inter at the top are very slim, as even with three victories in the matches they have to recover against Livorno, Reggina, and Atalanta, they could still be 13 points off the top if the nerazzurri don’t slip up. Still, there are many reasons for Milan to win this match.

According to the bookmakers, unbeaten Serie A leaders Inter are favorites for this match, and indeed lately they have looked unstoppable both in Italy and in the Champions League.
Last week’s easy 2-0 victory at Cagliari saw them extend their lead on top of the table to 7 points: considering the difference in quality with the squads of Roma and Juventus, a second (or third if you include the ‘assigned’ title of 2006 following the relegation of Juventus) consecutive Scudetto seems almost inevitable.
In the Champions League they have been equally impressive, and avenged their only defeat of the season away to Fenerbahce (1-0) with a 3-0 home win against the Turks that sent them to the next round as group winners. Their mental strength was also demonstrated in the home match against CSKA Moscow, where they went down 2-0 only to perform an awesome comeback to win 4-2, the fourth goal an absoute screamer by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Their two major purchases following last season’s Scudetto victory, Christian Chivu and David Suazo, both turned out to be on the money. The Romanian defender has barely set a foot wrong, and has showed great versatility when employed on a midfield role. Suazo had a difficult start, but he’s also been banging in the goals frequently lately, and is currently ahead of a giant like Hernan Crespo in the pecking order up front.
But also a less high-profile purchase, Chilean playmaker Luis Jimenez, has proven himself as a more than adequate replacement for Luis Figo in the number 10 role behind the strikers, scoring a few impressive goals as well.
With nine consecutive victories, Inter’s morale will be as high as Milan’s following their Club World Cup victory. Both teams will be in confident mood: the Rossoneri always tend to give their best in big matches, while Inter also know they have what it takes to beat Milan, after winning both of last season’s derbies.
Their motivation to win this match will be as high as the boys in red and black, as they want to maintain their 7-point lead over Roma, who entertain Sampdoria in what should be a straightforward match.
With both teams looking so strong and confident at the moment - albeit one more than the other - on paper this match has the potential to be one of the most interesting and spectacular derbies in recent times. Let’s just hope the players don’t succumb to a fear of losing, and that their will to win prevails to give us a match as eventful and entertaining as the 4-3 victory Inter recorded around a year ago.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter)

The Swede has been sensational for Inter ever since joining from Juventus after the Calciopoli scandal in 2006. He is a complete player and can do practically anything with the ball, and if he can guide Inter to some major international trophy in the near future, he seems sure to win the Golden Ball. Milan will keeping a close eye on him, after he scored against in both last season’s derbies, although with his unpredictability and immense skill it’s hard for any defence to guarantee they will contain him.

Kaká (Milan)

The Brazilian playmaker’s recent Golden Ball and Fifa World Player prizes were the rightful rewards after four seasons of great performances, especially in the Champions League, since coming to Italy in 2003. Finishing as top scorer in last season’s European season was also probably crucial for his Golden Ball win this year. Although perhaps not quite as unpredictable as Ibrahimovic, he is a frequent match winner in important games, and has a class and style of playing football that’s all his own.
PREDICTION

I have a feeling the teams will cancel each other out for most of the game as both have a very solid defence, even though Inter have more options up front. I'm afraid it will be an anticlimactic draw.
