If by "those tactics" you mean talking a lot and provoking the opponent then you're wrong.
Starting from Portugal, through Spain and Italy, ending with ex-Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, all of us in the southern parts of Europe are good in provoking
But imo it's still better than the barbaric reactions you get from the northeners when they spit other people in CL finals, headbutt people in the finals and deliberetely step on other people's foot, trying to break their leg into pieces in World Cup quarterfinals.

Clean slate (or clear conscience) in other translation is the key word. If he plays a very different starting eleven against Romania, does it mean he act against his conscience? I don't think so. Their roles are needed at the next stage, and so do with other players who played the entire two matches.

So if he decides to rest them then it's his prerogative and everybody must respects it. It has nothing to do with repaying love whatsoever. So I wish good luck to Italy, but should they fail to qualify, then it's because of their own fault of not performing good enough.
