Milanmania's MVP for 2008-2009 season.

Just an idea I had lying on my bed, after every game of the 2008-2009 season, the users should list their top 3 performers of the match. We could have something like 3 points for 1st place, 2 points for second, 1 point for third and maybe half a point for honorable mentions. Then we can average the points to see which player placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each match. Then at halfway through the season we can total the points and determine the User's MVP for the first half of the season. We could do the same for the second half of the season then find the overall MVP.

It'll help solve arguments when people say: Player X had an average season. We can always go back to the votes and see if that was actually the case (in our opinion of course)

Just an idea I had...anybody interested ? Or maybe suggestions to make it better? The only problem is getting to see every match in good quality as rating from a stream might be a little difficult.

I think it's a good idea... maybe this could replace the "predictions" thread since there was no way to really follow up on the answers...

let's just define how to assign points... considering not all players play the same amount of games/ or time per game, but their contribution should also be considered... let's say, for example Pippo... maybe he will play 20 out of 38 matches, but what if he scores 5 really important goals (like those in Atens, or Yokohama)...

Reza, can we have a voting system for this on top of the "last page" of the thread for everyone to click on once?

Great idea

The only problem I can see with it is, as you said, people voting based on a crappy stream or without even watching the match at all, basing their vote solely on match reports, or even worse, popularity (e.g. Kaka getting 1st place regardless of performance).

Other than that I really like the idea, there's still a lot of time before the season starts to perfect the system.

Sant: Maybe important games like those against Juve, Inter, Roma should count double considering the pressure of a high level match ? As well as matches from the quarterfinal of the Uefa Cup and onwards (if we make it that far of course).

Vadim: I know that's a major problem but I think I ran into a site that usually has full matches for download. Like you said though, there's time to perfect it.

Thats a nice idea. I will look into a voting system, not sure I'll find one that can do the job but I will look. An alternative is to add a poll to a match thread after game is over.

I was thinking of a voting system as well but there are times when it's so difficult to decide. e.g. When two players perform so well (or when everybody does badly) that a top 3 might be better. Also if a player comes second consistently, he might rack up enough points to be overall MVP rather than a player who gets MVP once or twice but isn't consistent.

e.g. Let's say Pirlo plays extremely well and gets 6 MvP selections out of say...15 games but lands out of the top 3 for the rest of the 15 games. Nesta on the other hand gets 3 MvP in those 15 games but places 2nd or 3rd for the rest of the games. On a voting system that just picks one player, Pirlo would be seen to be performing better than Nesta (6 votes to Nesta's 2). However a system that takes into account 2nd and 3rd place finishes will credit Nesta's consistency and he might come out on top of Pirlo at the end.

I'm having a problem figuring out how we'd collect all the user's votes and determine the man of the match and the runner ups. The idea I had in mind from the first post was to assign points to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Then when each user submits his players, I'd add up the points and divide by the total number of users to find an average. Then the players with the top 3 scores would be MvP and runners up accordingly.

Setting up a poll that allows three selections would automatically average it out over time wouldn't it?

According to the rule mystik has mentioned (3 points for 1st place, 2 points for second, 1 point for third), i think it wouldn't be that way rezag. It's more like 3 different polls, not 1 poll with 3 selection isn't it ?

I know absolutely nothing about computer programming and that kind of stuff so I really have no idea.

I don't think a poll with three selections would work though, because I'm not sure if there would be a way to distinguish who was 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

I'm not sure if 3 polls will really work out because when people see that their first choice didn't win the first poll, they'll probably just vote for the same player again.

I don't even really think Reza has to go through the trouble of setting up a poll. I could easily calculate manually then post the results a couple days later (depending on the workload at school...etc) This will prevent people giving their favourite player an advantage by voting for him as first second and third.

Yeah I can do the number crunching, that's not a problem at all. Just wanted to see what problems the system would have. The one concerning watching the match on a crappy stream is a serious problem....

I was thinking that when you have a top 3 chosen then the player who is in most top 3s will automatically get a higher ranking. Over one game and over the season most presences in the top 3 will be a good indication of the MVP.

But you are right, more important than how its done and numbers calculated is the actual voting.

^^ Do you mean that after each game, each user would vote for 3 people and then the top 3 would be determined from the number of votes each player receives? I guess it could work...but with the points system we could double the points for big matches like Sant suggested. There's plenty time to figure out the perfect way to work it out,

I mean that people would select their best 3 players for a particular match. Then I'd assign the top three points (3, 2, and 1 pt respectively). Then I'd total and find an average to take into account everybody's opinion. The player with the highest average would be Man of the Match. Then I'd do the same for each of the matches. At the halfway mark in December, I could use the results of all the matches up to December to find out who was our "main man" till then.
