If those players come cheap why not but if you have to dig deep then you have a problem.
Coz you are just buying a team on the worst possible way.

You asked for an example, Kompany had a longer contract with Hamburg and costed Manchester City 8 million, (10 depending on results) .
(He joined before the takeover so I doubt he got astronomically wages in comparisson with other EPL players).
I'm not saying that we should have got Kompany (but we could of used him) but you asked for an example.
My point is that there are young players available for just a small amount more.
(Allthough I think with signing on fee and wage Canna will cost about the same).
Kompany isn't as good as Canna was on his peak but neither is Canna at this moment.
Kompany can develop in a better player but Canna will only decline.
If we buy Canna will have the exact same problem we have now so we would have to fix it again next year
but we would be down 5 million. And Nesta will be another year older and Maldini will be gone.
If you buy a young player you can use him longer or sell him.
You could say that was during the summer but again Kompany was sold at the very end of the summer break.
Nesta's injury problems aren't new (he was left out our European squad for a reason).
Maldini's age and injury list are well known and Kaladze has always been the same.

So this problem isn't new and was very predictable.

Adding Canna to our squad could be a short term solution indeed.
But splashing 5 million on such an old player who's contract is expiring in 6 months is just a panic reaction.

I don't like to compare with other teams but since you asked for examples Van Nistelrooy is seriously injured,
so Real bought Huntelaar they could have bought Crespo to but they didn't.
If canavarro's performance don't suffer a major slide in next 2years which I think he will not, 5Mil will worth every cent of it.

We build a team in a mode combineing youth and experience, first team regular and professinalism sub like inzaghi who always be ready on the bench.Next year,if we have Tsilva, bonera, canavarro, healthy nesta or a new purchase like mexes and with kala on the left occationally,It's a perfect CD departement.Canavarro is not only a short term solution.

You have got to be kidding saying Cannavaro is more than a short term solution! You are falling back into the trap again. The only way he should be here is if Nesta retires. We need a commander in our defense. Bonera, Silva arent that.

I wish we can have mexes, terry, vidic,Tsilva on our 09-10 player list,Is that going to happen? If it really happens,I think carlo will be more headache than he is right now.

By the way,Did you read nefremo's post in page83

Canna has been average for Madrid and will not solve our problems. I hope to see youths like Darmian and Albertazzi given a chance. We should sign Zapata with t Silva, and bring back Abate to teach him how to play rb. Promote Strasser, and bring back Gourcuff & Di Gennaro in midfield, get Benzema & Paloschi up front, and get rid of the dead wood. We'd also need 2 new keepers. App we got Felipe from Brazil? 20 year old keeper from Santos. We'd need another imo.

We both agree we need a balance between youth and oldies.
But if you take a close look to our squad you can see we just don't do that at all!
We don't have any defender we use frequently that's under 28.

Thiago Silva is but we can't use him (yet, besides he is turning 25 imho he just makes the cut for my definition of a youn player).
Senderos is a youngster to but he's just on loan, so it's not really a steady base (yet).

Or do you rate Bonera, Kakladze, Antonini, Zambrotta as Jankulovski as our youngsters?

I want a good mix to of course but adding a 35 year old defender to our squad isn't the right way. We would just have the same problems we face today.

Let's face it year after year Canna will decline. We are all fixed on Maldini who played tremedous at the age of 37-38 but he's an exception, he struggled several years with his knee and got several very revolutionary surgery in Antwerp. Were even the doctors were stunned from the results but that isn't possible for every single player.

Besides Maldini had Nesta next him when Sandro was at his peak I hope that he will come back beter than ever but I'm affraid a full season with 45 games (league, europe)is just to much for him.

You say canna will be good for another 2 seasons well we would want him for an 18 month deal and if we part from him in the summer we would pay him a full year contract for six months. All that proves that he is nothing more than a short term solution.

If we get canna other's of our 'younger players' should definately leave since we simple have no youngsters as you point out isn't the right balance.

If he comes I will be cheering him on since he is one of my favorite players but I doubt he is the best investment for Milan. He is nothing more than a short term solution and a panic buy.

That's what I mean give the youngsters a chance! To keep our squad balanced. Allthough I wouldn't be that drastic
Yet...
Is that Felipe deal done? Does he has a EU pasport?

Signing old big name players is defeating the purpose of rebuilding... replacing old with old is not the way to go... and if you look at it our present squad has a very low resale value... except for Kaka we have no player in demand... i think we are not doing good as a business... the players we buy often remain with us after there usefullness has expired.... we dont sell our players when they are declining... i really hope to see some good smart signings preferably some loan signings for the short term.

We are linked with Bovo I really like him, he also has a very good shot, good free kick taker.

I'm only talking CD since the begining of this subject.CD is a position reqiure aged experience, 30-33 is a CD's golden time.I don't think a CD department of a champion contender including players I mentioned is too old. It's average is smaller than inter and juventus in fact.If mexes replace nesta next year,It will be at the same level compared with any other CL title contender.

I think we don't share a common sense of the interpretation of short term.my opinion is kind like this; since we are still in the scudetto race despite 9 piont minus,an immidiate reinforcement can be called short term solution.so canavarro is in deed a short term.but canavarro can really be part of our next 2 years rebuilding program with a role like pippo does in recent years, He definitely is more than a short term.

We need to recruit oldis, they keep the whole team function well. the problems is we don't buy enough young stella players to refresh our ageing lineup gradually,or we did it(like pato) but move too slow. if carlo get players he want(alex, adebayor, ribery,If I remember correctly)in recnt 2 years,Maybe we won't have this topic right now.

By the way, please remember the scudetto hope hasn't vanished yet, you'd better trust proven immediate help than nursing promising young CD at this mement.

Good post koeke.. I think people should stop assuming Mexes will be here next season. Roma's not a team that would be selling one of it's best players for no reason (although they did sell Chivu) and certainly not to us.
I doubt we'll be having Santacroce next season either so the best will be Nesta back and Agger partnering him. I think he's a very good player.
As for Cannavaro, dont think he's needed for more than a six month loan if he has to come at all. No need to buy him. He's not Maldini people should realise.
His age may not be a problem in Serie A but it'll be when he plays in the Champions League. He's sucked in it for Real for two seasons and that wont help our cause either.

Thiago Silva is a player that will have his place in first 11 of Milan. He has the quality to do that and he will show he has become a really powerfull defender. Also he can play as a RB for us since he has speed and technique.

It would be good to have Agger now, or any defender that has some class in him. Aldough my pick is Santacroce, not Agger or Mexes.

And Roma oftenly sells its best palyers ( someone said they dont ): Zebina, emerson, Mancini, Chivu... Aquilani is on the verge of his contract etc. But my wish for next year is still only one defender: Santacroce.

According to channel 4.....

The Diavoli are currently looking to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

Vice-President Adriano Galliani revealed they will be looking for a top-level left-back and according to Tuttomercatoweb Manuel Pasqual could be their first target.

Galliani also said that Marco Borriello will probably be out for most of January and it will be important for him to recover fitness.

Meanwhile, Benfica defender Kostas Katsouranis claimed the Lombardi are also interested in his services.

“Milan have been following me,” revealed the 29-year-old Greek international.

It has just occured to me that we have not yet been linked to Roberto Carlos.

Wouldnt that be a great back four?

R.Carlos Cannavaro Maldini Favalli

Pasqual is a good option, 26 is not bad.. another 10 years in him..
