LOL buddy I don't know what football you watch but the best defenders don't just kick the ball outside like mad men(or women). That's for mid-bottom table BPL teams...not Milan in Serie A. You seriously have to be kidding.

Agreed. Booting the ball up the pitch is like saying "we don't want the ball, you can have it," since very few of our players are good in the air. We need CB who can pass the ball around a bit. However, I don't think we should judge Senderos' technical skills by his performance on Sunday, as the team was under heavy pressure from Fiorentina. Getting the ball out of the box was the most important thing right then, but when we are dominating, we need him to pass the ball.

Like I said, I only watched him for 15mins during the last game. Quite franky, our defense were playing too fancy instead of just keeping thing simple. I never said Sanderous is a great defender but a good fit for Milan, since the other defenders play fancy football and he plays simple football.

The best defenders keep things simple. Paolo and 'Sandro are a testament to that. The only time they do anything fancy, is when they're being forced to. Good positioning and timing is really all they use, well... plus a good physique.

I'd rather call him.... inflexible, Kaladze started off as a Leftback, he just never adapted to the Centreback position properly, whereas Maldini, being the versatile Captain we all know, conformed to his spot perfectly (of course, playing in a back line with Baresi, Costacurta and Tassotti does help )

I think both Gabriel and Mystik have valid arguments. Mystik's correct in saying quality defenders will play the ball out rather than just boot it up. Gabriel's correct in that at times we overplay in defence when really we should clear the ball (it's up to defenders to use their common sense and decide which is necessary in the situation). Senderos played well against Fio, he positioned himself well and whilst he did clear the ball a couple of times, he did also pass the ball out at others.

Gbariel you are very very right, its very very irritating that Milan each time try to combine their way out of the pressure of in this case La Viola. Each time they failed and they lost the ball in a dangerous place, then Senderos came in and he just cleared it away so that Milan could regroup again and Viola had to start over again.

This is the right thing to do,if we could combine and counter our way to their half or goal then we should to that but we can't.We just pass the ball to Pirlo and then Pirlo passes the ball back or to somebody else and then BOOM Fiorentina took over. And that each time i was waiting that somebody in the field or Ancelotti would say:Kick the ****ING ball away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, it's the difference between very good defenders and great defenders: what they do after having stopped their opponent ...

A very good defender will, for some, shoot as strong as they can in the ball, others will try to dribble ... but their decisions don't depend on the situation, they always do that. A great defender will stop his opponent and then he will adapt to the situation, clearing the ball or dribbling one opponent or ...

Then, you have the difference between the best defenders and great defenders: you look at the way Maldini and Nesta played at their best ... and you compare to current great defenders.

My 2 cents on this issue.

One of the greatest defenders, Franz Beckenbauer was known to not only win the ball but also start a possibly move or a counterattack. It's what made him stand apart from all other defenders of his time. His vision and passing were immaculate and as close to perfection as any defender has ever had.

Maybe in the EPL, a player that simply clears the ball is good since their most of their game comprises of throwing long balls in hope of something happening rather than constructive build up play. Of course it's impossible to find a player that has both skills. Agger will be a good buy in that sense since he offers an option that most players these days don't.

I remember watching the last game that Pirlo, Beckham and Seedorf weren't creating space for their defenders to pass to.
Also Mrki mentioned in a post a few days back that our midfield was static which made it difficult for the defenders to not lose the ball. I guess that contributed a lot to the losing possesion thing.

I guess what clearing the ball here means physically intercept the ball in the box. Now Milan players rely too much on techniques on defense, though the problem is that in the limited space in the box, in many occasions, misunderstanding and defection happened, costed us most of the goals.

That's why Kaladze is not so solid a defender at all, yet precious for this team.

yes, because kaladze doesn't play central defender, he is naturally a LEFT MIDFIELD OR LEFT BACK, do u remember that in 2002/03 he played great as a left back... but then serginho came again into his best form, so he played, than jankulovski camed... and kaladze also had some injuries and that scandal about his brother,... and when kaladze finally got back, carlo suddenly put him into CB !? why the f*ck !? we can all see that he stinks in CB postion... but he has much accurate passes, and crossings than jankulovski, actually, he has great crosses and passes ! but u cannot use those abilities when u r playing a central defender, right ?

No people. Players like Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, CAFU, Stam, Billy, Baresi etc., are able to take OUT the ball. TO TAKE OUT the ball, not to just clean in out like players such as Bonera, Kaladze, Senderos.

Its a good and quality caracteristic for defender to play serious and concentrated football, but if you have players with technique that doesnt mean they'll risk things, that just means they will bring in more security to the players around them.

Cafu is the best example. The man won so many duels just by being patient and smart, with his brilliant technique he never just banged the ball up ( like Massimo Oddo or Marek oftenly). Same thing with Maldini and his solutions that control the game by slowing it down and playing amost as a playmaker when having the ball.

That can be seen in todays Milan in when you look at the difference between Oddo and Zambrotta passing under pressure. With Zambro we gained MUCH more security and calm down the right flank. The quality of football Zambrotta has in his HEAD is absolute class.

Now there's the possesion problem in todays Milan due to lack of Maldini's power of running ( so he doesnt risk going forward deep, and Nesta is not here ) and due to MArek's lack of pure technique, plus, midfielders ARE NOT MOVING WEL ENOUGH.

My losution is this: play Marek as a midfielder left to Pirlo, play Flamini on the right, and send Seedorf to the bench... for Boogna game Im talking. that will give us top class tempo. IF Pirlo if fit to play in high tempo for once!

EDIT:

I also agree, for us if Nesta can play ( they say he really could ) best solution is:
--Zambrotta-Nesta-Maldini-Kaladze--

MArek as LM or fit Seedorf.

Beckenbaur I hear often started a match as a striker to take the lead and then finished it as a defender to defend the league. That is what I call a complete footballer. Essien is capable of this also by the way.
