Phillipe Senderos - is he up to it?

He's got an excellent frame, an excellent size for a centre back, but in the games i've seen from him both at Arsenal and now at Milan, just doesn't use his weight and size to his advantage, doesn't appear overly strong aerially and has a track record of being bullied by strong centre halves. He's reasonably quick for his size, but overall his decision making and reading of the play let him down far too much for my liking for a player in such an important position at such a big club.
sure, he's only on loan, but hopefully he proves me wrong, I just dont think he has what it takes to make it as a world class CB?

he is slow and in many times got fooled by opponent in 1on1 chance. ability on area covering is his handycap. in arsenal he played better than in milan just cuz he covered with better center back partner and closed by 2 great physical full back.

i dont see that extending his loan contract to a permanent moved as a mass advantage for us next season. for next season with this current squad and someone new replacing carletto, logically our pairing center back will be bonera-thiago silva (assuming nesta injured). TO compete as serious contender in serie a & back for long UCL competition, we need at least one new great CB not the kind of senderos or kaladze or favalli. Alex from Chelsea would be 1 of good option. Yes there's the price milan have to pay, perhaps big money, but this is exactly the right place and time to spend money.

Simple answer: At Milan, NO

I can accept if you gave ineptitude label on kaladze performance nowadays or since last year. back few years ago while carlo put him as fullback, even chelsea so eager to chase on this guy

I'll join the party.......NO, he has not been up to it for us, and I don't think he will be in the future.

Maybe with a WC CB next to him he will be all right, but why should we settle for that. Why can't HE be the one that's making people around him look better. Players like that shouldn't be in Milan. So....ship him back over to Arsenal and lets look for a CB elsewhere.

I think it's unfair to judge players when they are called upon 1 time a month. Sports in general are not easy to play and even top athletes need to find their groove's, especially in football where form goes up and down like the stockmarket.

Fair enough and you are absolutely right (even though all here are pretty familiar with his performances in Arsenal as well). BUT.....

We paid 2 mil (i think) for this loan deal, and if we want to keep him we need to pay 8 mil more. Now, are you willing to gamble 8 mil (10 all together) on a player that's played 5 times this whole season and has been pretty much bad every time he's played?

It's not about judging Senderos fairly, but it's about the future of the club.....and I don't think we need Senderos to play week in week out to realize that he is not the player to be leading our defence back to glory. However, I guess he might be all right as a back up as we will be losing Maldini and Favalli, while there is still no word on Nesta.

Unfortunately he doesn't appear to be what we want atm, though as nef says, he hasn't played too much. I sort of knew from his games with Arsenal he wasn't of high quality, though I wouldn't be surprised if we end up keeping him as 'he's part of the family', its cheap, etc.

i haven't been impressed with any of his play this year. he appears to be very fit, but he plays sloppy

Not even close...at times he's like a top being spun around. That isn't something that is going to be able to be taught or coached. He'd do well to go back to England where he can outmuscle people, not stay in Italy where his positional sense and lack of defensive thinking put him in compromising situations.
