VDV and Sneijder would be nice, lets add Johnny Heitinga to that list, and we'll have another Dutch Trio again. They worked well in Ajax together, why not Milan? ![]() |

So..it seems we're just like Real Madrid but only on a minor scale...sniffing the global market and buying the products we want and need

So, Galliani says Milan isn't interested in Cassano and bitches about the tax system (Isn't Berlusconi the Prime Minister? Can't he do something to get tax exceptions for footballers?).

If I had a nickel for every time Berlu or Galliani moaned and groaned about Italy's tax system, I'd own Fort Knox.
Notice that no other Serie A team brings this up to the media ad nauseam as they do? |

Sir Alex Ferguson managed to remind the player last summer of the contract he had to honour, the manager's visit to the player in Lisbon doing the job in the end. But there are only so many times that such powers of persuasion can come to bear and there are two decisive factors in United's decision to relent on this occasion: the club's debts of around £700m and the fact that the player has not been the force he was when sweeping all before him and scoring 41 goals in 2007/8.

That's the same thing almost everyone here said 1 month ago about Kaka! The bottom line is, if Pato cannot be convinced to stay and demands a transfer, they'll sell him. It's not liklely, but it's in Pato's hands, not Milan mgmt. They've boxed themselves into a corner now. |

Well in that case everybody who is a 'star' can transfer to Real (and the (at most) handful of other teams who can spend) Real's roster will have 60 players
![]() Even if the management are that out of it even transfers out has a limit ![]()

I think of him as the George Steinbrenner of La Liga.
![]() Regarding Pato, I think it's very unlikely that he'll be leaving this summer, but to be perfectly honest if Chelsea were really willing to pay 45 million pounds for him I think I would do it. That's more than 75% of what Madrid paid for Kaka and well more than half what they're paying for Ronaldo. That's an incredible sum for a 19-year-old who isn't yet a complete player -- no matter how enormously talented he might be. That said, I can't imagine that Chelsea would pay that much for him. Even when they were being criticized for all their spending, they weren't spending more than about 20 million pounds on players. And since they were burned on the Sheva deal, Chelsea seems to be trying to live more within their means anyway. Sure, Abramovich could sign a check and think nothing more of it -- but so could Silvio. I think Real Madrid (obviously) and possibly Manchester City will be the clubs most willing to pay outrageous sums. Other clubs are going to take the economy into consideration, at least to some extent.

This is true and that has certainly made him even more hesitant. I'm sure he would be willing to go the extra mile if there were a great player who became available that the brain trust thought was absolutely necessary, but he didn't become as rich as he is by being stupid. All the clubs should be a little more mindful in these times. Even Real Madrid -- and I know they think they have an unprecedented cash cow going -- could find themselves walking a tightrope because of all the money they're throwing around if the economy in Spain continues to get worse.

And that's the frustrating thing with Berlusconi's reluctance to buy players: If he invested properly he could earn money, both by the team winning trophies and by raising Milan's profile in general (again shirt sales etc. etc.). But our dear "sugar daddy" is more concerned about counting his pennies. |
