Goal.com Expert View: Aly Cissokho's Move To Milan
The Rossoneri are unlikely to be disappointed with Cissokho, according to the experts at Goal.com...
14 Jun 2009 14:45:58

Milan have snapped up dynamic Porto defender Aly Cissokho for €15 million. The player just spent six months at the Estadio do Dragao before the Rossoneri pounced. Our experts provide some comment here on the Milanese giants' newest acquisition.

Luis Mira, Goal.com's Portuguese expert, suggests that the former FC Gueugnon man has been making a positive impression since moving to Portugal a year ago.

"After some impressive displays for Vitória Setubal in which he was the club's best player, he opted to join FC Porto just one day after an eye-catching display against the Dragons for the League Cup. Porto had been in need of a left-back for some time and Cissokho filled that void perfectly," he claims.

"Cissokho imposed himself in Porto's starting XI right after his arrival but it was against Manchester United [in the Champions League quarter-finals] that he caught the eye of Europe's finest clubs."

Mira reveals that the France-born starlet is already an adept player and he believes the Rossoneri have made an excellent purchase.

"A strong left-back, Cissokho is calm when fulfilling his defensive duties, despite his young age, and has drawn admiring glances. However, his offensive attributes have also earned rave reviews. Such a complete profile is rare in a 21-year-old, but we will surely see more of this tireless player in the future."

Meanwhile, Alexandre Walraevens, Chief Editor of Goal.com France has been impressed by the rise of the defender, but insists it is deserved.

"He played very well for just six months [at Vitoria Setubal] and FC Porto decided to buy the man in the last winter transfer period for €300,000!

"Only one year ago he was relegated in third division in France, he has now signed a contract with AC Milan!"

It's the only way to improve the team: keep the former starters and use them as backups. If each time you buy a new starter, you sell the former one, it's pointless.
Exactly, there's no way Jankulovski should leave. He's still a competent full back, and he's excellent in the midfield. Right now him, Seedorf and Pirlo are the only ones that can play in the midfield who's not a 'DM', so I think it would be fair to say that we still need him.

Amen...100% agree...in fact I CLEARLY REMEMBER Galliani (and Ancelotti) saying a few months ago that we will buy a new left back so that Marek Jankulovski can permanently move into midfield next season. Expect Janku to be competing for a starting left midfield position in 2009/10. And before you criticize my post please see a few games where he plays there. He's quite awesome...

Not yet ...
Senegal want him in their national team but it seems he would prefer the French one.

Actually, Jankulovski is an average fullback because he can't defend ... but if Cissokho is our starter, then Jankulovski will be able to compete for a place in the midfield, and if Cissokho has an injury, Jankulovski can play some games again in this LB position.

This way, that will mean that in the worst case, our LB player will be the one we have had for the last 3-4 years, which means we improve this position as this former starter will be the backup.

If we sell Jankulovski, we will have the same problem as this year: if Cissokho is injured, Zambrotta will have to play on the left ... and like except Flamini, we have no decent backup for this RB position (Antonini for Serie A is ok, but I can't imagine him in CL, and if we use again Flamini there, that means there will be less competition in midfield).

So I'm happy if we do some signings of this kind, but I will wait the end of the mercato to be really happy (waiting to see if we sell some players or not, hoping we won't because for me, it would be a mistake, we really need a bench).

Actually reports are saying that Milan will pay Ł13m PLUS Ł1 per trophy Cissokho wins with us. Considering his young age, this guy could become really expensive. I have to tip my hat for Porto, they are truly incredible businessmen, selling their players for tons and tons of money and get new great ones for cheap.

With that being said, this guy really looks promising. For those who saw the Man Utd - Porto matches, Cissokho completely neutralized Ronaldo defensively, and from what I hear he's got speed and stamina to run forward a lot. Regardless he's young and we can improve his skills as long as the talent is there.

Galliani said it, we are buying young players to build a new great generation, and it's 100% the correct thing for the club. Maybe we won't win any titles the next few years, but if we can use the time to build a new young team, I'm sure we once again will dominate for years to come.

No comment on this guy because I've never seen him play before myself. I wish him all the best, and I hope he can defend because Janku is HORRIBLE in this regard. Signing a proper left back and pushing Janku into midfield is the right thing to do, let's just hope this guy is a proper left back.

Now just a CD, MF, AM, ST and we're good =)

More on Milan's newest player:

Quote:
Player Profile: Cissokho

Full name: Aly Cissokho
Position: Defender
Date of birth: 15 September 1987
Birthplace: Blois, France

Few players can match the meteoric rise to stardom of Aly Cissokho. In less than one calendar year the left-back progressed from playing for a modest French second division outfit to a stellar performance in front of over 70,000 fans at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-final. (Manchester United 2-2 FC Porto)

But taking a closer look at the attributes of the defender, perhaps we should not be so surprised at his rapid rise to the top. Cissokho’s surging runs down the left flank, superb crossing ability, strength in the tackle and ever-improving positional sense proves he has all the tools to become one of the world’s leading left-backs.

There is a considerable school of thought that argues the full-back has become the most important position in modern football. Cissokho’s impact on an FC Porto team struggling to move into top gear lends weight to that argument.

The player arrived at the Estadio do Dragao after just five months at Setubal in the January 2009 transfer window. Coach Jesualdo Ferreira had no hesitation in throwing the 21-year-old straight into the first team. The French-born defender showed some nerves in his first games, but quickly settled to become an undisputed starter, playing a key role as Porto went on a run of 13 victories and 2 draws in 15 league matches to claim the Portuguese championship.

Complete confidence

The unbounded confidence Ferreira showed in Cissokho had a galvanising effect on his performances, culminating in that memorable display at Old Trafford as FC Porto were unlucky to be denied victory at the reigning European champions. Not content to rest on his laurels, Cissokho continued to work hard, especially on the defensive side of his game, and looks ever more the finished article.

Little wonder, therefore, that a host of European clubs were soon linked with a summer swoop for the defender. While the heady pace of his career progression has taken most by surprise, the coach who gave Cissokho his debut in Portugal at Setubal, Dauto Faquira, says it is a natural consequence of his faultless attitude to the game:

“Cissokho always wants to learn more. He came from the lower leagues in France, but showed right from the off a hunger to learn. He put enormous effort into training, he wanted to develop, he made a big effort to learn Portuguese and absorb all the information transmitted to him. He’s a very ambitious and competitive youngster.”

I loved what I saw from this guy in the Champions League and I love him even more the more I read about him!

player ratings man utd - porto

Cissokho (8): An admirable showing from a virtual unknown. His athleticism was a joy to behold. His power and strength up and down the flank was immense and he did a good job of digging out a number of decent crosses. A real prospect.

and Porto - Man utd (0-1)

Cissokho 7.5 - The highly-rated left-back was strong as United started well, and positive as Porto started to make headway. Perhaps just edged on-off personal battle with Ronaldo, but left it a tad late to start really getting forward.

He is very fast and he is very good to attack, but he need learn a few more to defend. He come to Setubal from 2nd french division and Porto bought him in January. From there he learned much there. Has a great desire to learn really.

Its encouraging to see Milan spending money on a young promising player. Sounds like a lot of money for an unproven player. Lets hope he not another Ibrahim Ba.

Good luck!!

My father is HALF-ukranian! I am hardly Ukranian, and don't even look it lol. Anyway, call me Sal or Eric if it is too hard to copy and paste. I have no problem with that, everyone besides my family has difficulties.

And yes, Australia is home to many Europeans, including Poles. In fact outside of Italy, Australia has the most Italians. Same can be said about the Greeks. We are very multicultural!
