Milan are looking to Fernando Gago as a potential replacement for Andrea Pirlo, who could be moving to Chelsea this summer.

Despite claiming he is happy at San Siro, Pirlo made no secret that a switch to the Blues would be welcomed.

On the other hand, President Silvio Berlusconi has admitted that the club could be looking to cash in on one of their key players.

“I didn’t want him to leave, but then they showed me the budget,” said the Prime Minister.

At Via Turati they would fancy Real Madrid’s Gago to be the new playmaker in Leonardo’s formation.

‘El Pintita’ is an Argentine international, a similar type of player to Fernando Redondo – who wore the Rossoneri shirt in the past.

Los Merengues would like to keep him in Madrid but if the right offer, in the region of £12m, was to come in they would let him go.

The former Boca Juniors ace is also a communitarian – he holds an Italian passport since his mother is Italian.

Gago would fit the mold of the kind of players we seem to be targetting now and for £12 million i think it would be quite a good move. Though it does depend how much we would sell Pirlo for. I personally would let Gattuso move on too, i love the guy to pieces but if his heart isn't in it then there's no point keeping him. Let him have his dream of playing in England, that way the team can move on.

Flamini--Gago--Essien in midfield with Ambrosini and one other on the bench (Melo? Hamsik?), seems like a good core to me.

Gago would be a great addition... Essein is a great player... if we sell Pirlo we can also sell ambrosini and replace him with Melo... this would give us a new look milan... a total of 5 new players are needed...one forward... 3 midfielders 2 defenders...

Let's be honest. Pirlo has always been one of Ancelotti's "favourites". His role was created by Carlo and Carlo plays him whenever fit. Would he be used in the same way by Leo? Who knows? Would he accept being on the bench? With his ego, probably not. So if we are looking for a more traditional midfield with a traditional holding player (Gago, Alonso) and some defensive mids (Janku, Gattuso, Flamin, Ambro), then it might be best to sell Pirlo for good cash now and remodel our midfield. We won't be getting any more for him than we are now, so this might turn out to be a pretty smart move.

If Pirlo believes, dont allow yourself to believe we can pull off a player in Essien's class while he is still reasonably young.

Pirlo is going nowhere.How can we sell Pirlo he was the best midfielder in the world.
Maybe these last 2 years he wasn't in such a good form , but he's still the best for me.

According to folk's theory, Pirlo is slow. Thus sell.

Maybe not, but on the downside we'd be just as boring to watch as Inter and Chelsea. Of course winning is the most important, but still - playing three defensive midfielders (I know Essien isn't strictly a DM but he's not exactly Zidane, either) should be banned from the world of football .

If we play with three CMs, then two of those should be players in the mould of Gattuso, destructive ones, but the last one should be a creative force, like Pirlo.

Btw, I really hope next season (if he's still here) Pirlo won't be playing as a bloody sweeper, but more advanced - leaving Gattuso and Flamini to do the dirty work, while he can focus on starting the attacks.

If Pirlo stays i will be happy because he is still one of the best midfielders of the world and he will shine for us because Leo will give him the space to roam on the field unlike Carlo,Pirlo with space to play.....it cant get better,just look at his performances for Italy,Lippi gives him space and he plays very good.

But if he leaves its probably because Chelsea overpaid for him(30 million for Pirlo??)wich is a great deal for us and we will get a younger player in return to fill the gap so if he leaves i also will be happy.

A win-win situation.

Ancelotti didn't create that role for him. Mazzone did, in Brescia... Ancelotti has the merit of giving him the chance to become a unique player in that role.

Pirlo's ego? What do you base this on?
He's one of the lowest profile players I've ever seen (for a guy that talented and recognized).

I would not sell Pirlo, just to sell for peanuts, but for 30 mil I would sell him right now.

I second this considering Mgmt's recent decisions.

So, if Pirlo leaves, are we moving for Ba or Brocchi?

idk, pirlo may have been italy's best player at the confed cup and he looks like he is in form again

Pirlo is the only player besides Pato who can fill the Kaka void. I wouldn't sell him. But for 30m, my mind wanders..
