Sweeper is no longer in the game b/c the modern day CB is not the old tall slow and strong ones like it used to. Those the modern day CB is actually a hybird of CB and Sweeper of old. At least in the top levels of football.

I really hope that we can, as unlikely as it looks i would love to be the team that knocks off Borduex, Chelsea, and Real Madrid, just because of Gorcuff, Carlo, and Kaka. Doubt it will happen but that would be amazing

I think Gourcuff made the right choice of not coming back to Milan. And quite frankly, I don't think Galli ever wanted him to be back.
Carlo should have left after 2007.
As for Kaka, I think Berlu and Galli wanted to sell him to cash in.

I guess my biggest problem with Gourcuff leaving is that he is young and talented. That in itself doesnt bother me a ton, but he won Ligue 1 player of the year. another young talented Ligue 1 player, Benzma was sold for 40-45 mil. Gourcuff might not have been worth quite that but i think we could have easily made 10-15 mil more on his sale, which could have helped us quite a bit this transfer season.

If they have a great WC, their prices will go up.
Honostly I have a feeling that perhaps our slow mercato is actually down to the whole situation at Real Madrid.

They have a HUGE squad with alot of really good players in the same positions and they really do need to unload them. It's obvious that having superstars like Sneijder, Van Der Vaart, Huntelaar, Van Nistelrooy and maybe Higuain sitting on the bench will, first of all, create a really bad dressing room atmosphear and second of all obviously cost a hell of a lot in wages. Basicly Real Madrid NEED to sell most of these players this summer, and so far they've been just as bad at selling players that we have been buying players.

I think that if we come to the end of August, and Real Madrid still haven't found buyers for most of their players, then they'll definetly be willing to let their players go on loan deals, and cut-prices, and we all know that Galliani loves stuff like that.

And about the players, it is indeed a World Cup year which means that those players would be alot more interested in joining us than if it wouldn't, because even someone like Sneijder may face the bench for Holland if he goes a whole season without playing.

The sweeper role actually moved from behind the def to in front of it in the last few seasons.

If you watch alot of teams play, one CB will mark, and the other will cover. It's how Milan are playing with Nesta & Silva alot. Nesta covers, Silva marks mainly, but has switched a few times.

Whereas when Onyewu, Favalli, & Kaladze play the roles become see no play, hear no player, what's offside.

Agree on all. I just wish the last one we could of gotten players in the deal.

To be honest, even with Xabi, I still think Sneijder will choose to stay at Real.

VDV, Drenthe, RVN, Hunter and Gago/Diarra are the players that Real really want to offload. And I have a feeling RB will take VDV in the Xabi deal.
HUnter and Drenthe will most likely end up at Arsenal depending on the price.

Milan is not the only club that short of players. Heck, I bet that ManCity will also end up with a player or two from Real. I would not bet too much on Milan getting all the discount price players from Real. I will be happy with just one(not RVN).

i really hope this is true. right now im liking a 4-2-3-1 with our players. if we sell pirlo ( i hope we dont but it looks probable) and we buy Sneijder, Robben, and Drenthe come to Milan we could have-

---------Abs---------
-Zambro--Nesta--Silva--Drenthe
-----Gattuo--Flamini---
---Abate--Sneijder--Robben--
------Pato-----

that is actually a talented, solid lineup.
sell Dinho for all i care, he is lazy and he will hurt our season if we put our hopes in him. use the money from his sale and pirlo's to buy the Dutch player and maybe some talented backups that can contribute

The players and the game is completely different from the time of Sweeper to now.
Back then Sweeper was very important b/c CB were big, strong and slow. It was the job of the sweeper to cover spaces.
But now the game forced the CB to be quick, and strong. On top of that, CBs are usually push up to press.

I just think the game had changed alot. Look at the Dutch's TOTAL FOOTBALL, all top teams play like that now b/c the players are more athletic.

Just back reading posts. I can't believe alot of u here thinks Pizzarro is a good player and will do well for Milan.
Thats just show how terrible Milan is in getting quality players.

So, our new LB would be the only one in top level football who's worse defensively than Jankulovski! I'd rather give old Favallinho another go - almost.

So today's news so far has been:

- Chelsea's 7m + Pizarro offer for Pirlo (and Galliani saying that the offer is not good enough meaning that pirlo is leaving for sure)
- Dzeko officially renewing his contract (a day after they sign Martins?) and saying he wants to have a great season with them
- Riquelme is the latest name for the post-Pirlo era. I highly doubt this is true but Riquelme is not the same player any more, in the past year his performances have declined.

Personally I dont know who to wish for any more in the market...it's getting too late for many players. I guess I'd take Robben and Sneijder.

Another sad day of news in the transfer market IMO....30 days left in the market.

If Berlu wanst young players he should go for Veloso to replace Pirlo, De Silvestri to move Zambrotta to the LB and sign Huntelaar on loan. Its pretty logical to me because all these players have been on the Milan radar for long time
