There was a goal from throw-in a few years back that nobody touched that was counted in england.

In professional football, someone (GK counts) MUST touch the ball from a throw in for a goal to count. Logic being...it's football....you can't score with your hand directly from a throw in. I'm 900% positive about this.

I can't say much as I didn't see the match, but a few things did hit me watching the highlights. In defence, I found Thiago made quite a few mistakes positionally that allowed Benfica in with chances at goals. He at times didn't push up with the defence to play offside when he should have and on the goal he should have been tighter to the attacker. I think Nesta will need to communicate with him a lot this year to get the best out of him.

In attack (well creative midfield) we will probably need a new player. I was hoping Di Gennaro would add something to our squad for the new season, but he's looking increasingly like he's not up to the task. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but it seems this way at this point.

Finally, I think Borriello looks more like our 4th choice forward for the new season. He's not playing too well at all and isn't looking likely to score much. I'm much more comfortable with Huntelaar and Pippo ahead of him with Pato as the second forward. Speaking of which, Pato should play off the left more imo, he seems to get the space he craves and has the chance to cut in more often when starting from the left (I'm not saying he should be a left winger).

I agree with the need of creative midfielder. We have Pirlo but we need one more cretive or offensive midfielder. Jankulovski can play as left CM but he shouldn't be first team player since he is more a winger than a centre-midfielder.

Uprfront we need a player who can play either behind two strikers or as wing forward (assuming Huntelaar/Pippo playing as the real striker and Pato as other wing forward) since I still don't believe in Dinho.

Guess its better to lose friendlies, than games that actually count, when the season starts...

However, its getting real tired, real fast, and must be demoralising to the group....

Let's hope that Leo is actually able to turn things around, as I doubt Huntelaar's addition can make that much of a difference....

Honestly, after watching the game, I don't think we need a creative midfielder. You could see the enormous difference that Ronaldinho injected into the team when he came on. The issue was that Janku was so invisible it was like Milan were playing with 10 men.

Borriello, on the other hand, was so ineffective, it was like playing a pick-up game, and there is that one player that always ruins the play when you pass it to him. But, you have no choice, so you pass it to him anyways, but it ruins the flow of your game and it limits your options, forcing you to defend more and more.

The reason why Barca was able to put such a flimsy midfield out (besides the fact it was La Liga) was because their forwards held onto possession and ran for every loose ball like mad men. Borriello, had he held up possession, or Di Gennaro, would have made a world of difference.

The real issue was that Abate, while he can be combative and tackle, is not a player designed for that, at all. Flamini should be taking that other spot, or Gattuso, because it's pretty clear that with two defensive midfielders, Pirlo and two attacking full backs, with Ronaldinho also there, we will be on song.

I think if Milan actually plays their real starting eleven, that being

You honestly would see a team that would wreak havoc on others. Hernanes might be a good reinforcement, and a LB would be critical. I think it's pretty clear that Seedorf would be Ronaldinho's sub, and I'm sure that the management is counting on Beckham returning in January as another midfield boost. Milan plays some really fluid football when Beckham and Pirlo are in the team, and I just can't explain in words how detrimental Borriello, Di Gennaro, and Janku were to a team performance that, without them, was very promising and should give us optimism.

Seedorf is very versatitle. He can slot in for Ronaldinho, or in the left midfield role, or even in central midfield--in the "Pirlo role".

All I think we need is a quality fast left back who can put in crosses for the Hunter to finish, then we'll have a complete team. As for Janku, I think the bench is best for him as for now, I think Favalli is playing better. Abate can hold down a role in midfield provided the other midfield player (gattuso, ambro, or flamini) run their socks off to cover for him.

Boriello has been pretty pathetic so far. He's been given the chance to shine and hold down a first team place, and it seems like he's intent on blowing it. With performances like this, he would be my 4th choice striker as well.

It's interesting, we do have players who are quite verstatile. I'm hoping Leonardo changes the formation every once in a while and give the opposition some surprises. Pato can play as a lone forward (no matter what he says), with R80 as the second forward and one of Seedorf or Pirlo as the trequartista. Like this:

yeah i'd definitely like to see this. Sure his frail frame would be nearer tougher defenders, but his passes wont have to travel as far, his short passes would be deadly, and maybe he will stop trying that dreadful long ball/pass/chip/fairy kick he tries 40 times a game!

The friendly at the end of this month, against Real Madrid, has been cancelled. It is posted on milan's official site. As much as I would have liked to see the match, it's good to alleviate fixture congestion at the beginning of the year.

The match vs Real Madrid was in between the Siena and Inter games, so I am glad it has been cancelled. We will need all the training and resting time we can get before the derby.
