I wish Abate would have been tried as a RB in pre-season, and while he has played as a wing-back before, I'm just nervous about him being in that position.

I hope Seedorf actually takes Pirlo's spot, because it's no question that Pirlo has masterful skills, but he has really lost what little physicality he had to begin with. That makes it easier to cut Pirlo off, and therefore the main source of ammunition to our forwards.

Seedorf, while no Flamini, can physically deal with things a lot better, and I think he would need less protection than Pirlo, which could open the door for Abate to start alongside Seedorf and Flamini.

I'm just worried that Abate might not turn out to be the right-sided Serginho, and we'll lose a very promising player. Honestly, he's impressed me a lot so far, and I really think he can become an integral part of the future of Milan.

I agree with samaldinho about the risk of ruining abate by playing him rb,but i think and hope he is good enough to be able to switch between rb and rm,i also think that its our best option.the annoying thing is that he performed so well in midfield in pre-season and id love to see once again the drive and the energy and skill that he brought to the team against juve.but the way the mercato went then this is milan these days.instead of solving problems by buying quality we have become a team that takes player from his best position and plays him in said problem area, therefore in a way decreasing both positions strength.but i guess thats what happens when you dont spend what is needed.i think abate can do well at rb,though id much rather see him in his midfield position.but he and flams on the right would be really really strong.

If we're stuck with these players, then we might as well make the most of them. Problem is we don't have a sufficiently strong starting 11. One of 2 purchases would have fixed the problem, but..

So, why doesnt Leo just try out different tactical solutions for different games. Some games we can play 4-2-3-1 with 2 DM's (Gattuso and Flamini) playing behind a trequartista/second striker and 2 widemen like so:

Huntelaar

Janku Pato Abate

Flamini Gattuso

And in some games we can play the Christmas tree with 2 AM's (Seedorf and R80)

Huntelaar/Pato

R80 Seedorf

Flamini Pirlo Gatusso

Might as well rotate the players and make the most with what we've got.

I don't see any risk with trying Abate as RB.

I like the fact that Kaladze seems resigned to playing LB. That's another option we have until January, I suppose.

I think the biggest worry for Leo now is what to do with Seedorf. He's better (imo) than our starters in all three midfield positions (Pirlo, DM, R80) but he doesn't seem to be in the plans. I hope we use him well and don't just ignore him.

My 11 would be:

------------------Storari
--------Nesta----------Thiago Silva
Abate-------------------------------Zambro
------------------Pirlo
-------Flamini
------------------------Seedorf
--------------Ronaldinho
--------Pato
----------------Huntelaar

The difference is that Abate and Zambro would push up far more than in previous games. It will make a huge difference. We shouldn't push through the middle, we don't have the power for that. We have to reach around our opponents.

So, Borriello is injured again, he has lower back pain, just perfect news. On another note, at least Huntelaar will get a chance to prove himself.

My preferred formation:

Storari
Abate Nesta Silva Zambrotta
Ambro Flamini Seedorf
Pirlo
Pato Hunter

Its worth trying Pirlo in this position after seeing his performance against Bulgaria. I would also like Flamini to be more defensive so that Pirlo would have some room for errors.

Well, I don't expect a beatufil game. We have to beat Livorno, receive three poionts and go ahead. We'll propably see Antonini and Huntelaar and I'm glad about it. Luca is really good defender and during our USA summer campaign he was our best fullback. The main problem with him is that he's 28 and has no experience in major competitions. And that's why Ancelotti and Leo prefer Janku, who's - imo - worse.

You know what would make that much much better? Beckham in place of Ambro. I miss that guy.

Meh, not to happy about Beckham after this, and all the other stuff about him lately. I say if he doesn't want to get back then it's his problem. He was mediocre at best last time around, only reason it was considered a succes was because no one was expecting anything from him.

Ofcourse an 'offensive' minded midfielder is a good thing, since we only have Pirlo and Seedorf, but Beckham hardly brings the amount of movement or the running capacity that we need. Why not start rebuilding the squad by bringing in someone like Hernanes instead, in the case that we're gonna bring in a midfielder? It'll probably cost a bit more, although Beckham won't play for free that's for sure, but in the long run it could be a better piece of business.

In any case, the midfield is the position where we're packed the most, even though most of them are DM's, still can't see him doing to much for us.

I think beckham did more than OK here! He was one of our better players. But I dont really want him back, we need to go for a younger player, not again a short term solution. our midfield is old enough already!

If recent reports are to be believed, that could well be the starting lineup.

I'd rather try something different personally. Something like...

-------------------Storari--------------------
Abate/Antonini--nesta--Thiago---------Zambro
------------Flamini---------Ambro------------
---Dinho/Seedorf----Pirlo---------------------
-----------------------------------Pato------
--------------------Huntelaar----------------

If Antonini plays, the I'd probably consider Abate where either Dinho or Seedorf are.

Good thought everyone.

Dev, me and you have long been advocates of pushing Pirlo closer to the opponents goal. But the other problem in Milan, like it's been said here times and times before, is the movement around him. But that's another discussion.

For this weekend I'd like to see him with more freedom and playing in front of Flamini - Ambrosini. Against Livorno we won't need too much cover in front of our goal, but only good tactical set up so we have numbers in the back whenever they choose to attack. Flamini-Ambro can cover well so Pirlo can move freely forward and be closer to the opponents' box. Put Dinho and Pato on the flanks to spread the Livorno defense and leave Klaas in the middle to be fed with balls. We will get our width from Dinho and Pato, since our fullbacks are useless.

So

----------------------Storari----------------

Antonini - Onyewu/Favalli - Thiago - Zambrota

-----------Flamini-----------Ambrosini--------

---------------------Pirlo--------------------

---Pato----------------------------Dinho----

----------------Huntelaar--------------------

I know this is taking Pato's shot somewhat away (Mrki), but the kid can be lethal with both legs. In any case.......right now our fullbacks offer nothing in terms of width, so everyone needs to make a sucrifice so we can see how this is going to work out. Dinho is not what he was and he wont burn players on the wing, but again, it'll give us width on that side and we'll se how it works out. At the end of the day....it's not like he'll be nailed to the touchline. He can still move in and get closer to Pirlo.

I choose Onyewu/Favalli over Nesta since we're going to have a CL game midweek that we'll need Nesta to play. And I choose Antonini instead of Janku.....................actually, I don't need to explain there.

So call this a 4-3-3, call it a 4-2-3-1, call it a 4-2-1-2-1. Call it whatever you want, but we need to spread out the play AND be dangerous at the same time. With Janku and Zambro we do spread out the play sometimes but we are never dangerous because they can't mange to do anything when in possesion.....or what they do manage to do is too few and far between. We can also use Pirlo closer to the goal, because we are wasting him by keeping him 5meters away from the CBs expecially against a team like Livorno. There is no need for that.

Hopefully we'll get back on track with a couple of wins this comming week so we can jumpstart our season again.
