Mano Menezes said it very well in a interview I watched last Saturday when asked about the first(and very offensive) Brazilian team he put together against USA last month. A very offensive 4-2-3-1 where the DM's were Lucas and Ramires, and the Fb's Alves and André Santos. Keep in mind Menezes is a defensive minded coach and that alone let everyone(press/fans) curious about his new approach. Just to clarify, he isn't a catenaccio coach, but one gives high importance(and value) to a strong defense.

So, he talked about of how the amount of offensive talent(Milan?? ) he has on the hands as Brazil NT coach change his style, and clarify points about such a offensive minded team and how it could work. What he said a team need to do to play(and win) in that way, was:

1- Fast CB's to play a high defensive line(as Allegri did Sunday), plus with ability on the ball. They need to be able to pass and can't fail. Since the team press so high, the creation start on their feet. A thing Tiago did for us a lot against Lecce. Brazil has T. Silva, Alex, D. Luiz, Mario Fernandes and R. Toloi(maybe Sidnei) and Milan has Silva, Nesta and from what I saw, Sokratis. So, we can do it.

2- But for it works, needs a Midfield with pace, strength, high work rate and ability on the ball. Like he said, we cannot lose the ball on the mid. We need to keep possession and boss the game or we will lose. And one more time emphasized it: Quality to keep the ball and don't lose it easily committing a mistake because the D will be high and exposed. Here we are laking material, imo. A player like Rinno runs a lot, but will lose it too and in a dangerous area. Thank God the time of the Gilberto Silva's type of player for Brazil DM position is running out. I hope for us, too. If he put it together, Flamini could be one of the 2 DMs, but we still miss the other one.

3- The AMD and wide players need to have at least a very good work rate. We(Brazil) have Ganso and Giuliano(if called) Neymar and Robinho. all can do it. We have Ronnie, and here is where the balance is lost for us. But now we have Robinho.

Like Mano said, when you play like this, there will be times you will expose your CB's, so they need to be real good and fast. Like in the first 15 minutes against USA when they stole the ball in our side and almost score. But if you have the talent and compromised players, the reward is amazing!!

What Menenez said is interesting and clearly true, but I'm surprised he talks so much about physical aspects of the game and not at all about the mental. If a coach plays an attacking team that presses high, then the players he uses must be intelligent. They must know how to read the game, knowing when to press and how to control the space with their movement and positioning.

For me intelligence is to some extent the most important aspect of a good team, as without it no team can win. England in this year's world cup were a perfect example. The players are highly rated and some of them are considered world class. Capello is one of the most successful coaches in history and is an undoubted legend. Yet, the side which went to the world cup as one of the favourites failed miserably, and for me more than anything it was the players mental incapacity that failed. It was quite clear what Capello was trying to get from his team, playing a high pressing game and dominating opponents with the squads athleticism and aggressive mentality. Yet, because so many players failed to follow at times relatively simple instructions, they left far too many holes to exploit and never worked well as a group.

He did, it was a looong interview to ESPN Brazil, but since my post was too big, I just selected some parts of it related to new Milan offense.

Mano is a bright person, and a guy is a football junkie. He studies the game a lot. Journalists had a chance to lunch with him, said even in his dish he like the food to be organized as parts of a team But unlike most of these coaches that studies a lot, he has a open mind to the scheme of his teams and chose the ones that suit the players at disposal better.

One of the reasons he chose a Santos base, was the fact they showed early in Brazil this season(winning Paulista and Brazil's Cup) the intelligence to play this formation. He just sub André for Pato and it was practically the Santos offense. But with A LOT more quality at the back four.

Neymar, Robinho, Ganso have the intelligence and work rate to make it work for Brazil, but I can't see Ronaldinho doing what is need for this team...

Isn't that exactly what Borriello was, dead weight? I've been waiting for him to come good for years. It seems he only plays well for other teams. I was so happy when Milan brought him back and had high hopes for him, again, and, again, I was disappointed.

Rooting for Borriello is akin to a lactose intolerant person having cheese pizza as their favorite food and eating it a few times a week. You know it's going to suck, but you go for it anyway.

At least when Inzaghi retires, we can try out a younger forward as a backup. Paloschi, Zigoni, Verdi, etc... I'm more excited about that.

Things are pretty upbeat for AC Milan right about now.

An impressive 4-0 thrashing of newly-promoted Lecce on Sunday felt like a reawakening, not only because of the unstoppable attack and Ronaldinho's nimble display, but also because the glamor introduction of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at halftime.

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani outdid himself this week. After jetting off to Barcelona and returning with the Swede in the seat next to him, he also secured the signing of Robinho. To top it off, he managed to flog Kahka Kaladze's hefty wages off on Genoa.

All represent tremendous pieces of business.

Ibrahimovic comes on loan for free in the first year, like Galliani drove off the Lamborghini lot with a sweet new ride with no payments or interest for the first 12 months. The €24m Milan will pay next year is miniscule compared to the €46m (plus Samuel Eto'o) Barcelona forked over for him last summer.

Similarly, Robinho, who cost Manchester City €42.5, made the switch for a much more manageable fee of €18m plus bonuses.

Galliani wasted no time in announcing to the media that, with the "gifts" from owner Silvio Berlusconi, Milan would play "very bubbly, pure champagne football" and that Milan is once again among the elite clubs in Europe.

As seen by the Lecce game, new coach Massimiliano Allegri has the champagne soccer ready, but the champagne bottles to celebrate trophies isn't quite so close.



By signing two luxury players, Milan neglected more pressing positions, and Berlusconi and Galliani once again have let the coach down.

Going into the transfer window, Milan needed more bodies in midfield and a fullback. Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sokratis Papastathopoulos were weak nods in that direction, but not the answers.

Since the Rossoneri won the Champions League in 2007, Rino Gattuso has steadily declined, to the point where he can no longer be considered a viable option for anything more than a bit-part role. In his heyday, the snarling midfielder was worth two players, putting in one shift down the right flank and the other next to Andrea Pirlo in the center of the park, allowing Pirlo to meander about and connect play.

Though he hasn't left, Milan has failed to replace his presence. (Number of trophies won since 2007: zero.)

Pirlo's decrease in mobility, coupled with captain Massimo Ambrosini's exposure against clubs of the highest quality, leaves the midfield increasingly frail. Without an energetic option at rightback (centerback Daniele Bonera played there against Lecce, though Sokratis is another stay-at-home option), how the owners expect the ball to move from defense to attack against high-pressure systems is baffling.

Speaking of the ball, Milan will still be only allowed to play with one on the field at a time. Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Ibrahimovic all demand plenty of time with it at their feet, and the challenge for Allegri is to create a system which allows them all space to shine and compliment each other, instead of getting in the way.



Allegri faces a similar challenge Barcelona did in 2007 when the four superstars of Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Eto'o, and Lionel Messi vied for three open slots. Barca slumped int an off-year before selling Ronaldinho. Any system with the four of Ronaldinho, Robinho, Alexandre Pato, and Ibrahimovic would likely demand more defensive work than either Ronaldinho or Robinho have given at any point in their careers.

Then again, Inter won several scudetti with the rather transparent tactical plan of booting Ibrahimovic the ball and letting him win games by himself. Maybe Allegri's job isn't as hard as it looks.

Either way -- rampant success or abysmal failure -- it should be thrilling to watch. Pop open the champagne and pour yourself a glass.

Agree, he reminds me of Gila, fans always rooting for him, gave him a ton of playing time and he never delivered.
