About our money for the next mercato, Allegri admitted that if there is an opportunity to buy a great player, Berlusconi will give us a gift ...

I hate how Milan always plays these games and we always say " Berlusconi may give us a gift"....

It's called RE-INVESTMENT in your aging squad... and it's needed..especially at LB, ACM, and soon enough, a replacement for Inzaghi... It's not a 'gift'...

It's the words of Allegri, and like you said, it's the game ...
Berlusconi, by investing in the team, needs to get affection, confidence, call it how you want, from the fans, he needs to be liked/loved because he's into politics, so he has to play with feelings. By using words like "investment", you don't play with feelings but with the brain, it's just logical. Logics vs feelings ... Feelings generally win in politics.

Anyway, a great player this winter is some kind of a gift as it's not something we really expect to happen (next summer, yes, this winter, no) ...

its some kind of a policy, you can't tell berlusconi "hey our squad is aging and we need 3 top players", you say "president, This X player is available and we would like him in milan, can you kindly get him as a x-mas gift for the fans". since berlusconi knows all about football and coaches and players, remember its his expensive toy, and we must be thankful for what he gives !!! with berlusconi you need to kiss a$$, its never what the team needs its what he feels like doing or buying!

I would disagree with the characterization that there is a lack of talent with Italian youth. I think the issue is less about the quality that Italian youth teams are producing, and more so to do with the fact that Italian clubs are actually preventing the immense talent that they do have from developing properly.

Both Italian clubs and the NT are in a tough position. A great generation of players are closing out their careers. Totti, Del Piero, Nesta, Cannavaro, Grosso, Gattuso, Camoranesi, etc. These players were pillars of their clubs team and the success of the NT. In order to continue to compete, clubs were willing to bring in foreigners to help transition these older players out. Many of the clubs did not allow for the youngsters to properly develop, or they would sell them off to smaller clubs after growing frustrated with them. Some of these players failed to live up to their potential, Gilardino is an example.

However, players like Cassano, Giovinco, Montolivo, are playing at clubs that they wouldn't be playing for if they were German or Spanish. The idea that Italian youth teams are not producing talent is not correct, the problem is that clubs are either mismanaging the talent or the fact that more and more Italian talent is being developed abroad.

Giuseppi Rossi, Macheda, Diego Contento, are but a few examples of players that came through because they were developed abroad.

I don't see the point of looking at a player like Coentrao, who would be worth 18+ million, for a LB, when I could spend much less than that on a player like Diego Contento, who I think has tremendous talent.

Furthermore, looking at players like Pirlo or Gattuso, they were not huge big names when they were brought into Milan. The club's treatment and development of players is a huge part of it, both positive and negative. For me, I prefer Milan's Italian backbone, even though I am not Italian.

Furthermore, I think that much of Italy's best talent is being wasted, whether it is Bonucci and Motta at Juve, Montolivo at Fiorentina, or Cassani at Palermo, these are very good players who could become top class if they were brought into the fold at bigger clubs.

Also, looking at Milan's current primavera crop, I have to say there are many impressive players there. Even the ones we have out on loan/co-ownership look good. Frankly, Paloschi and Astori alone would be great reinforcements for the team, and looking at the way Abate has played for us at RB, I'm inclined to really question the need to spend 18 million on Coentrao, regardless of how great he is. I mean, Abate did a hell of a job against Cristiano Ronaldo, if that doesn't say something, what will?

Painfully funny but true
Galliani must be one hell of a diplomat, all these years trying to balance the needs of the team, what the coaches want, and at the same time caressing our presiden't ego.

So do you guys think we should make a list the way kids do to Santa or resort to the old "papi" tactics

Either way, let's hope this time it's more for the greater good of the team. The chance of winning the serie A this year is simply too big to pass up.

But Coentrao is a LB, and we all know how crap our LBs are. The only Italian solution of this position is Diego Contento and I'm not sure whether Bayern would be willing to let him go, especially when their backline is considerably awful lately, and their position in the league is quite embarassing too.

There are two teams in Serie A that will never sell their players to Milan, Inter and Palermo.
SO unless the contracts of guys like Santon or Pastore expire or they leave for another club and then back to Milan. There is no way you can see those two and others from those teams playing for Milan.

6 months ago I would have agreed, but right now Thiago is making major progress. He's becoming the defensive leader we want and his positioning has improved a lot. Really, I can see him being the great defender of this generation.

Completely agree with almost all you have said there. Italy, bizarrely like Scotland, have players of the required level when in youth football but they are not developed properly by clubs. In Scotland this is also to do with culture but in Italy it is down to attitude and the system. There are no Italian Barcas, Arsenals or Ajaxs. France and Germany have both in the recent past had a look at their player development and facilities with great effect. Football will always be cyclical and Italy have ahad a great generation of players but unless they change tact, it may be a while til this returns. They're are very few great Italian players in their mid 20's but Milan and Italy should really be focussing on the teenagers and those in their early 20's.

My only disagreement would be about Abate. He's a squad player but nothing more. I must admit that I don't see every game but his positional sense is non-existant in almost every game I've seen and for a former winger his wing play is not great. Hopefully he can prove me wrong.

Diego Milito as long term replacement for Inzaghi would be a master buy. Our beloved Inzaghi was a famous Juventus player, so no harm in thinking about a famous Inter player.

It is very easy to understand the difference.

In an investment, the money has to come from fininvest, as Milan is a member of the Fininvest group, but by a Gift the money will come from Berlusconi's PERSONAL pocket.

Also note that the gifts from Berlusconi were always given as a donation, not loaned as other owners do.
