Stam

Do u guys think that we shud sell stam in the summer or keep him? stam is old and has made a lot of blunders this season. I am sure that if we decided to sell him this summer we cud make a lot of money from it and we cud use that money to land a young talented defensmen like chivu. We cant even consider stam a maldini replacement because they r probably going to retire in the same year. I wud love this defense next year:
cafu(oddo) nesta(sum1 from youth team) CHIVU(maldini) Janku(serginho)

out: costacurta, kaladze, simic, stam, pancaro
in: chivu, janku, oddo, one of the defenders that played for us in palermo game

Maybe getting rid of Stam will be a good move if we can bring in someone of the quality of Chivu. The problem is getting any money for him, because he won't have a very high market value at his age, and I doubt he would want to leave to go to a smaller club.

As for getting rid of Billy Costacurta, that would be a crazy move. The guy loves Milan, is a legend and is highly respected in the dressing room. We should keep him and eventually get him as a coach, to work alongside Baresi and Maldini when he eventually retires. These guys understand the passion of the fans, and they should stay at the club to teach the youngsters.

Yeah, I agree - the people in Somalia are also starving because of Stam.
Seriously, I mean how people could so easily pinpoint the problem for Milan losing on the scudetto and the CL and say it was that player and not a whole GALLORE of other factors.
I agree that he made some mistakes but he is a Milan-quality defender and I am sure he will stay for at least one more season with us. Give him some time guys and stop whining like ... biatch-slapped whores.

Stam!!??

The guy has been a rock for us so much this season and in crucial games. Yes its not been his best season, but he is still an outstanding defender to say the least.

NO, we shouldn't get rid of him

Stam is no doubt a world class player and is up to Milan's standard. The problem is wiht his coming our back line becomes somehow less stable.

The best combination for me is Nesta+Maldini, their playing style compliment each other very well, if we look at the past two season. Nesta+Stam can work too but not as good as N+M one. But Stam+Maldini doesn't work too well since their playing style don't complement each other too well. Stam is strong in direct intervention but bad in positioning. Maldini's strength is positioning and reading the game.

I don't see Stam is to be put on bench by Ancelotti, af all it was he who wanted Stam. We just renewed the contract with Stam for one year so don't think any sale of him either.

Just hope he will become more fitted in the backline with one season playing with us under his belt.

that would be stupid...

give stam time to settle... and still he had amazing displays for us this season... the game vs barca in the san siro tops the list... he may have looked uncertain but hes still new and u dont gel with a team just like that... we all know what hes made of and the board didnt sign him just because of his name they know we need him, next season the defence should look stronger, we would be used to each other better and with a winning mentality i doubt we would end up trophyless like this season

w cant blame our trphyless season on him, everyone makes mistakes, nesta looked horrible vs depor yet we know hes quality... this season was lost due to lack of determination

I can kind of agree with what you're saying, but if determination is why we didn't win things this season, then they attitude of the players must be in question surely? If thats the case, then who is not determined enough to win things with Milan?

Though I do fault Stam for many of this season´s losses (at the risk of being called a biatch slapped whore by zlatanov), I think he deserves a little more time, say till mid season next term, to properly mesh with Nesta, so there is more non verbal communication in the box, and hopefully prevent repeat goals of the like of those in the Juve, PSV and Liverpool matches.

His positional sense is terrible at times, and for players to score from the positions in the aformentioned matches, when we have not one, but two centre halves in the frame, is criminal.

I mean really, a free header in the box from open play, not once, not twice, but three times in three games?

And zlatanov, dont even start with me on this, as I know I am totally correct in this critique...and remember I didnt suggest that we sell him off right away...I think he deserves a little more time, but not a lot, and we need a youngster or two (some one say Coloccini?)to start integrating into the backline.

Don't worry - I am not gonna come after you . The fact that you suggested keeping Stam saved your arse, at least for now
As for Colo, forget about him for he was sold pemanently to Depor plus I guess we need someone like Alex and Chivu, although the latter seems to be a bit slow at times, with class yet young in age. See, the problem with finding a young defender is that the market has always been very poor as far as young and capable central defenders go. There are a lot of names floating around - Mexes, Kompany, Perea but they are all big IFs with lots of potential but nothing too concrete about them yet. Right now Chivu looks like our best bet for a young and proven defender, while Alex is another one but he is owned by Chelski so he is more or less untouchable right now.
Samuel also isn't way too old - 27, I think - and would be a great choice (although not exactly a lightning fast defender) for our central defence in the next 4-5 years but he is now with Real and I am not sure they will let him go despite the awful first season he had with them.
Furthermore, we must not forget the fact that Juve is also a team famous with paying a lot of attention on defensive solidity and their defence is aging as well. They will be a formidable rival on the young-defenders market and have been often linked with possible moves for Chivu and Samuel.

I didn't see this thread and I started another one. Basically, that's what I thought about Stam: He is useful, but he should not take the place of Maldini in a 4-man backline.

I am not talking about who was at fault, Dida or Stam, for Gerrard's first goal against us (the most destructive one, you all know what an opening goal by the captain could do to the whole team's morale. ). I am trying to look at this in a bigger picture. How should we use Stam, and what's the best way to use him?

In my opinion, Stam should be a backup for Maldini. The Nesta-Maldini duo should be maintained for another 3 years. Stam is too big a name to put on the bench, so it is a problem, so our captain had to move out to the left, where he was still good, but our central defense was weakened. The chemistry between Nesta and Maldini is unparalleled. We should not break them up.

So if we will maintain a four-man backline, Stam should be a backup. Our captain is not becoming any younger, so this "young" Stam will be very useful. And I am not regretting this 10M investment on him. Without him, maybe we weren't this far after all.

But, in another thread, I proposed this lineup:

--------------------gilardino--------
-----------sheva-------------------
------------------kaka-------------
------------------------------------
janku----------pirlo-----------cafu--
--------------gattuso---------------
------------------------------------
----------maldini--stam-------------
--------------nesta-----------------
--------------dida------------------

The main change will be:
1) the utilization of two wings and 3-man defense;
2)freeing Pirlo from too much defense responsibility but not pushed too much forward so that we can maximize his vision in playmaking and protected by Gattuso.

I doubt that Ancelotti will even think of a 3-man defense, but it seems to me the best way to maximize our team's potentials.

What do you think?
