yeah ok but why are chelsea 'so successful'??? ... dont they play with 1 man upfront??
i think the best formation than should be taken is our current one, it can only be spoilt by incredibly fast football or by have an off form midfielder its a bit risky because u need to have a player like gattuso to always be there covering and u have to have a player like pirlo that can supply from impossible positions and that can rarely be found. what made us soo successful recently is that we ALWAYS controlled the game, in these last 3 seasons the only loss that we really deserved to lose was vs depor and it was because they exhausted us with a performance that can be played once in a million years... we controlled the tempo of the match and we played it simple and easy passing and thats the best way to destroy the opposition, to make them play your game. we also had a very strong defence, that when we were upfront very rarely did u see us lose a match because the defence was so hard to beat... we really played some dazzling football at times come to think of it... we really are the worlds best and im convinced about that |

Using Brazil and Chelsea to make a point is always going to be dubious, it could just as easily be argued that the key to their success is simply having better resources (Brazils, pool of talent, Chelsea's near inexaustable wealth)
Counter attacking is only truly effective if the opposition are prepared to attack you in the first place, Chelsea would know this and the reason they do so well is because they not only have the counter attack option but they also have a defence solid enough to almost guarentee a clean sheet (meaning 1 goal all that is needed to win) as well as excellent set pieces. It gets overlooked a lot but that is really how they make many of their breakthroughs, Lampard with a freekick or Terry/Drogba etc heading in from a corner. As for Brazil, they have Ronaldo, Adriano and Robinho upfront with Kaka and Ronaldinho supplying the right tactics can stop them though, defensive 4-5-1 with an aerially dominant centre forward can frustrate and threaten them (as Mexico did recently)

I don't know. Although tactics play a part, I don't think that's it.
Fact is, Chelsea seems to have unlimited financial resources. Imagine if Milan was told to go ahead and spend as much as they want to sign 10 new top players. (Not that we need to). Maybe we get Lampard, Gerrard, Robinho, Buffon/Casillas, etc... In the case of Brazil, Ronaldo, Baptista, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Kaka, Seginho, etc... and that's just the attackers. Although Brazil is certainly not unbeatable, they have amassed more young super talented players than any other country currently. Brazil has been by nature, an attacking team, which you can see by what position their elite players play. Italy, a more defensive team in general, tends to have much more talented defenders. I've stated for years that Italy needs to develop and utilize more attacking midfielders (not like Totti either) to help drive a counter attack. Instead there are a plethora of talented defenders and defensive midfielders. Sigh. |

i think people mis-understood my original post.
i was merely interested into what brazil and cheslea deemed successful and to understand why they play there style of football. that the moment your opponent loses the ball, they are at there weakest... |

That was a good article.
However, I'm surprised that no mention was made about controlling the tempo of games. Personally, I think this is a key issue for teams that hold possession a lot. Brazil are brilliant at demonstrating this, as they are usually very patient with the ball, but as soon as an opportunity comes, they will strike and naturally up the tempo. In fact, often analysing the Brazilian game, its a key factor to note where the ball is held on the pitch when they play at a slow tempo and where it is when the tempo increases. Milan in the last couple of years have actually, been playing games at a very high tempo constantly without ever slowing down when necessary (an element that often attributes to the "great disasters"). This isn't to say that we are bad in this area, but we aren't as good as we have been better in previous years. Not sure if this all makes sense and I certainly could say much more on the matter, if I had time. |

Milan could certainly make more use of Mourinho's "resting with the ball" idea.

"However, it is clear that a side like Milan should know how to dominate and win a game. We need to learn how to hide the ball." I just realised something the Argentina coach said, which is he described Brazil as a counter attacking side. This is true to a certain extent, but Brazil are also a dominating side. They are willing to use counter attacking methods to achieve results when they feel they are control, but at the same time, normally if the side feels it is being put under pressure, they usually look to hold the ball and dominate possession in the game for a period of time to regain structure, composure and control. So I personally think Brazil are a combination of two contrasting styles of play, which is why they are so devastating. Now, if Milan can actually improve certain aspects of their game (such as holding possession when under pressure), they will be better than Brazil imo, simply because we have better players in certain areas, particularly in the centre of defence. ps - off topic, but why is it I never see Alex in the Brazil lineup alongside Lucio. Imho, he's a better player than Juan and Roque Junior who are normally picked. |

I respect Parreira for his tactical knowledge of the game, though sometimes I do question his decisions (another one is why Juninho P. is not a starter often when he could probably add more than Ze Roberto who starts more alongside Emerson). Overall though, I do think he's a very good coach. |
