Galliani: "We are not going to buy any defenders”

No case for Milan's defence

Source: Football Italia

Milan have announced that they will not be signing any new defenders in the January transfer window.

While Andriy Shevchenko and Alberto Gilardino have formed an extraordinary goalscoring partnership at the forefront of Milan’s attack this season their defensive problems have been their Achilles heel this season.

The Rossoneri have conceded 21 goals this term, making theirs only the seventh-best defence in Serie A. Last night’s 4-3 win over Parma was a prime example of the sort of lacklustre defending that has undermined their League campaign this term.

Leading 3-1 at the break, Carlo Ancelotti’s men simply switched off when the visitors had the ball in their half and only their abilty to outscore their opponents eventually assured them a nervy three points.

However, Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani insisted today that no rearguard reinforcements would be forthcoming this month.

“We are not going to buy any defenders,” he added. “We are fine as we are. I have no criticism of the Coach or the players. We have got 40 points from 18 matches, we are doing better than this stage last year.

“Unfortunately, there is a side ahead of us that is moving at an incredible pace,” he added. “If Juve carry on like this, there’s not a lot we can do.”

Milan are likely to be moving in the transfer market for a striker, however, should Christian Vieri make his expected move to Monaco this week.

The Rossoneri are reported to be interested in recruiting one of Marcio Amoroso of Sao Paulo or Fiorentina’s Valeri Bojinov as their fourth-string striker.

He still believe and giving time for the defender to prove others were wrong. Just hope that they do improve if Milan really dont buy new defender.

Its what he does not what he says

Wouldn't surprise me though, if not now we for sure need one or two in the summer.

meh who cares.

I doubt a player who comes now could change anything straight away anyway.

Its important for the summer.

Now the whole team depends on Kaká-Sheva-Gila.

Silvio says he has discussed with Galliani the possibility of getting one new defender. My guess is that would be one of Oddo, Barzagli, or Lugano.

i read this too . very disappointing! we need 1 rb or lb now and a cb and the end of the season, our defence line up of simic , nesta, kaladze serginho is not ideal.

i would like simic, lugano, nesta, Kaladze

Stam is healthy one week and injured for the following one. Maldini's situation is still one big question mark - when he will come back and more importantly how long is he gonna stay healthy after that is yet to be seen. Same is true for Cafu, who has hardly played this season. Billy at 39-40 could hardly be relied on for a Wednesday-Sunday game schedule. So, I think we need one RB (Oddo) and one CB (Barzagli/Lugano seem to be available) right now just to "repair" the defensive holes. Then, at the end of the season further reshuffling should be done since Stam, Billy, and Cafu look like sure departures, while Maldini may well face an uphill struggle with staying fit.

Oh my, Berlusconi is crazy... we can't with only 3 strikers, if something happens with one of them we will be in great trouble!

i think we could make it too the end of the season with only 3 strikers. The league is practically over, we can use league games to rest players in preperation for the champions league. We must, however make a move on the defenders now. Ultimately signing someone like Lugano/Barzagli and Oddo could see us progress much further in the CL and the players would pay for themselves.

Otherwise, as I've already said in another thread, we'd be looking at having to bring in as many as 7 players in Summer. Too many, in my opinion, in one go.

Berlusconi says he has talked to Galliani about getting a defender
http://www.channel4.com/sport/footba...ia/jan10c.html

Unfortunately the milan board has announced that the striker we will get is NOT Chevanton. Chevanton is a very good player, very good skills, shots, freekicks, headers, he is sort of like Sheva. IMO this is a type of player we should go for, and not a player like Vieri/Iaquinta/Toni/Amoroso. We need to have a player so we can sub Sheva knowing we are not doomed.

That's what happens when you postponed the necessary reformulation until the unbearable... :-(
