Time for Galliani to change his strategy or go
In another thread, I argued against Carlo being sacked. This is becoming an issue so I think it deserves a thread. Simply becuase Carlo is suffering from Galliani's stopgap transfer strategy. He has filled in so many holes with older players that the water is starting to leak in if it already hasnt.
As far as sacking Carlo goes, changes should never be made for the sake of a change. Before we change anything, we should ask why. There should be rhyme and reason. The main reason people say is he is out of ideas. Why, because he just doesnt have the players he should have. Real seem to have turned around, why? Not because of Capello who has made some mistakes. But because Perez has gone with his galacticos rubbish. the new man has brought in a defensive coach to fix a tam with defensive problems and bought in one of the best defenders in the world along with the brick wall that is Emerson and Diara. As I said in another thread, sacking coaches didnt solve the problem. Getting rid of Perez did. For Milan to move forward, Galliani needs to realise that his policy of experienced and cheap is only good for the short term. But eventually, he has to bring in more than his one token true investment per season(This would be wonderful normally, but we are at a stage where we need at least three of these signings at once). Galliani hasnt been all bad, hes brought Kaka, Gila, Pirlo and Gourcuff who were all young and genuninely had the potential to become the best in the world at what they do. But, out of these four players three are midfielders. With this positive strategy there is little wonder why we have one of the most talented midfields in the world. To add to the four starters we already have Brocchi is a very good squad player and Gourcuff will eventually take up a spot for himself and in the mean time he provides a good option. The attack speaks for itself as we still havent bothered to sign a replacement for $heva, but if we do then we could be set for years to come upfront aswel as in midfield. The defence is the major issue. Cafu, Maldini, Billy and Serghinio are all getting on now. Whether or not we believe they can still perform at the highest levels, no one can argue that they are all being badly affected by injuries. Even the great Maldini isnt having the same affect on games he was upto a year or more ago. Im not suggesting they should all be dumped, but its a major cause for concern. Players like Billy and even Cafu need to be phased out for the sake of our future. Those who have seen Bonera know he is a centreback and not at all a rightback. Let alone a replacement for Cafu. The only reason we bought him was so we didnt have to buy a rightback. But Milan cant operate like this, not if we are to be succesful. It wont be too long before Nesta is coming to an age we will need to consider a replacement for him. Are we really going to field a central defence the quality of Kaladze and Bonera. And dont even get me started on signings like Favalli. Its time for Galliani to either change this approach and for him to get out of the comfort zone he is in. We have too many players that make somewhat of a contribution, but cant contribute to us winning a scudetto. Players like Ambrosini, Boriello, Billy and Simic. I wont even put Cafu or Maldini in that bracket even though I cant see a Milan team moving forward with both of them in the team. Maybe one, but not both at the same time. One thing I have noticed on this forum is a culture develop that refuses to write any Milan player off. Id probably add Galliani to this as he is a fan favourite on this forum. Now, its a good thing to back people, but we need to be realistic. We have been waiting for a world class rightback for a long time. We still havent signed a striker to replace $heva and I wouldnt be surprised if we got Fat Ronaldo in the summer. I dont see us signing a world class defender the likes of Gallas who many thought would come. I told you then he wouldnt, even though we lost stam. And will we still have Ambrosini, of course we will unless Galliani decides to bring in players that the club and its existing champions deserve ie the likes of Alves, Marcello, Gago etc.The truth is, if anyone is out of ideas its not Carlo its Galliani.

Galliani is not my favorite, not at all. I think he is the main reason that Milan is underperforming. Not Ancelotti.
If he wants to go, I wouldn't make any effort to keep him. ![]()

1) This is a culture that, believe it or not, Milan has adopted, not the forum. However, one may imagine that the forum itself will inherit, to certain extent, the type of mentality that the management endorses. Example? Go to Inter forum when they keep drawing and losing last year. Same mentaliy. 2) Continuing to bash on Milan's transfer policy only shows how ignorant you are about how the whole scandel that hit Milan. Unfortunately, no world class players would like to come to Milan without a chance to play in CL, and back then you know what happened. And, of course, as if not enough, Shevchenko add salt to the wound. And people think he is the best player in the world. Of course he is but you know what? He is gone (and God traitors indeed will reveal themselves some point in their life). |

Jeff my friend. My whole thread isnt about the summer just gone. Iv felt this way from way before. And yes, it would have been difficult to get world class players, but are you telling me Milan couldnt have signed players like Grosso and Barzargli. Even zambrotta admits he wanted to go to Milan. So your argument that Milan couldnt attract world class players doesnt wash.
Yes, we had a traumatic summer, but we said goodbye to players like Stam and Rui Costa who could still have been useful. When these players first moved on, I was content, because I though we would move in the direction of signing real replacements. In Gourcuff's signing Im very happy, in signing Bonera not very happy. On your first point I do agree.

But is Galliani really the one who makes the decisions how much and on whom Milan will spend for a certain transfer campaign?
Galliani may be a VP but he is not the man with the finances ... and if he is given limited finances to work with then how much of the responsibility is really his? Let's not forget that the majority of free-spending clubs all have either a major financial mother-fgire backing them or a host of shareholders to rely on. The one major club that has been sustaining itslef - at least that's what the official story is - was Juve under Moggi ... and we all know how that ended and how their successes were achieved ... also, even then Juve were getting sahdy sponsor deals with Libian Oil Companies worth several hundred millions of dollars - do you think we should follow the same path? All in all, Carlo may be an employee who has to work whit what he's given but is Galliani's situation really that different than Carlo's? In the end of the day, Galliani is just an employee, very much like Carlo, who doesn't have unlimitted resources at his disposal. Many would say why we didn't spend the 40-50 mil we got for Sheva. Well, keep in mind that our transfer season was heavily dependent on the calciopoli verdict and whether we would be playing CL football this year or not and Juve being very reluctant to give us any of the number of quality players that were put on the market ... it's just an odd year due to odd circumstances ... but when you judge Galliani's work, and even better, when you try to think of an alternative to him who would for sure bring Milan more success, I think it would be much more fair to take into account not just this year's transfer campaign but Milan's performance over the 4-5 years - or better yet - the past 20 years. Whichever you choose, you will discover one curious fact - Milan has been the most successfull team over either of these periods not only in Europe but the world as a whole. And before someone quickly comes out waving stats showing that we haven's won anything in 2 years now, well then what was calciopoli all about. Don't you think it was about a scheme that deprived Milan of 2 scudettos in the last 2 years, which would have made it 3 in a row. So, all in all, let's not just quickly pick a blame-figure in this odd year not only for Milan but for Italian football in general - Juve in B, Milan penalized, Inter on top of Serie A - but judge someone's work over a broader period of time ... cause once the fingers have been pointed, the scapegoat found and slaughtered, then comes that moment of actually finding someone to not merely substitute the vacant place but to improve on Galliani's achievements ... and I might be shooting in the dark here, but I think I am pretty sure everyone will be looking at the ceiling if asked who that person will be, who will guarantee Milan more success than Galliani ... I say "guarantee" cause Milan fans, being among the most spoiled out there, don't have much patience.

Good post Zlatanov. Im hoping Galliani "is to blaime" because if Belu is making these decisions then we are done for. I agree on the success, but as I said Gallinis transfers are short term ones. Now we are passing into the long term and we are seeing the fruits of not replacing those signings that were originally short term signings. And if Carlo must work with what he has then it is unfortunate as the fans and players of the quality of Kaka and Pirlo deserve much more. Yes Milan fans are fickle, but why not chase success in the world of football. Every fan no matter which team they support expect the people involved in their club to do their absolute best.
The thing is if we are honest many of us expected much better signings DESPITE the moggipoli. I remember everyone expecting at least one of Zambrotta, Gallas or Raviellere including yourself Zlatanov. So the campaign was dissapointing for other reasons than the moggipoli. As far as the culture that exists in the club and this forum. I love it, I love the fact that eople still believe in Gila and Dida (Who I started the thread for). I like that so many good and opposing opinions came out and there should be a healthy debate. But with a refusal to write off players should also come the eventual exeptance that nothing lasts for ever. Billy for example has been a true legend, but its time for a new player to write his own history with Milan even if he has a little more left to offer. We need to look to the future.

Zambrotta wanted to come but you know why Juve didn't give them to us. It's not like money can solve all the problem, at least not in Italy. Stam and Rui Costa wanted to leave. Was (was..., yes) Milan a team that prevented their players from leaving if they wanted to? (e.g., Shevchenko?) If your heart is gone, is gone. That's why I don't undersatnd why some people want him to be back. If Stam and Rui Costa wanted to go, go. Thank you, we miss you, goodbye. No hard feeling. Mutual understanding. My argument about Milan can't attract player is simply that Milan cannot attract player without a spot in CL. Trust me, it's a huge incentive. Anyway, I don't think it's right to bash the management. *sigh*,.. just think about how much will make a different if Milan didn't concede the 3 goals lead against Liverpool. None of these will make any sense anymore. But, that's the interesting part of football, in a way a reflection of real life: Not the best person gets the best, but the luckiest person gets it all. |

1) His defensive experience is something you can count on during training. Man, don't you want to train alongside Maldini and Costacurta as a defender? I certainly dream so lol 2) The fact is, we all know that Billy is not up for it. We all know it, just like we know that our defensive line is kind of old, but put it down as a write off does not help. |

Yes Zambrotta wasnt allowed to join. $heva went, we cashed in. Our only crime there was not relacing him if we let him go. Fair point on Rui and Stam, but Barzagli would have been a good replacement for Stam not Bonera.

Unless you prescribe something as expired (With all due respect to Billy) you cant replace it and look forward. It will hurt milan if we dont write off the things we need to write off. If you want success, is there room for sentiment? Many of us like Contra, but had we not replaced him, would we have got Cafu. Realism is what is needed.
