It seems to me that if Gilardino didn't touch the ball after it bounced off the post, maybe Inzaghi and Maldini might have some chance to send the ball into the empty net.

Gilardino should just avoid the ball; after all, Abbiati didn't touch it, so if Gilardino touched the ball again before anybody else (like he did), that was a violation; so even if the ball did go in, it would be annulled.

Gilardino was inexperienced.
