Collina to be the new referee designator

Ex-Juventus managing director Luciano Moggi has spoken out against former referee Pierluigi Collina by claiming he shouldn’t be the new referee designator.

Having been one of football’s most recognised and respected officials, Collina is currently working as a voluntary consultant for the Italian Football Referees Association.

According to widespread rumours, the Bologna-born financial advisor is almost certain to be handed the task of designating referees to matches next term.

The post of designator grabbed the nation’s attention during the Calciopoli scandal when it emerged that Moggi had been making telephone calls to Paolo Bergamo to request certain referees.

However, Moggi, who is the most recognisable face of Calciopoli, has cast a shadow over the 47-year-old’s credentials.

“I always said Collina was an excellent referee, but I really don’t think he should be the designator for the coming season because there were intercepted telephone calls between him and directors of certain clubs,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

The 70-year-old continued to criticise the state of calcio by insisting that the game had done nothing to purge itself of corruption since last summer’s events.

“Ex-FIGC President Guido Rossi said that without Moggi and Antonio Giraudo football would heal itself, but instead nothing has changed,” he insisted.

“There’s a strange idea of justice given that the same people are running the game as were 20 years ago.”

Moggi is talking about Milan.
Also, Milan and Collina share the same sponsor - Opel

Not anymore, as far as I know we are no longer affiliated with Opel. But I remember it was an issue in the past. Wasn't there some mini-scandal on us and Collina having the same sponsor? I vaguely remember reading something about it...

Anyways, I think Collina was one of the best referees in Italy in the world. No one is more qualified to hold this post IMO. Moggi just needs to disappear.

BTW Tony, what was it that Collina talked to Milan directors about?

No offense Tony, but yourself once said what is MOGGI saying shouldt be taken seriosly...

I was just giving you info lads. Doesn't mean i think Collina will turn the world around to make Milan champs of Ita.
If Collina is the authority he was as a ref then there's noone better to do this job. Moggi is a cry baby after calciopoli.

The thing with Collina was that he had meetings with Meani in some restaurant, late at night, after the working time. There were phone calls between himself and Meani+Galliani but nothing illegal.
Officially Collina was never a suspect in Calciopoli and it's out of mind to claim that he was favouring Juve or Milan.
He was the one who "took away" the Scudetto from Juve in 2000 ( Peruggia-Juve, last round) but he was also the one who didn't give penalty on Cafu in Milan-Juve.
It was a 50-50 call but if he was favouring Milan then he would have given a penalty !
I'm 99.999% sure that he was a fair referee and no Meanis or Moggis could have made him blow the wistle in their team's favour !

Edit : I read on Juventuz.com ( the member isn't reliable at all ) that Opel is still one of Milan's technical sponsors (whatever it means)

Yes, i just checked.
Opel was Milan main sponsor for 12 years and last year they found a new sponsor - Bwin
I don't think Opel is involved with Milan anyhow now. And i don't see why would Collina still have a sponsor.

There were actually two appeals in the Milan-Juve match. I remember when we we're beat you 3-1 some posts from juventuz.com were posted as well and one said "Where's our beloved Collina now?".

But I have to agree with you on the trust to Collina. Top-pro. BTW he was/is a Lazio supperter acoording to his words

It was eather sarcastic or someone had no idea what he was talking about. Collina is still one of the most disliked refs in Juventus. He gave more penalties against Juve than any other ref did and he gave 90% of the 50-50 calls against Juve. I guess he wanted to prove he's not Moggi's puppet or something.
But truth to be said, he never damaged Juve unfairly, except on Peruggia-Juve when he alowed the match to be played in impossible conditions.

There's a same thread like this one on Juventuz.com. There you can see how much Juve fans like Collina
