Champions League & UEFA Cup Thread

Unless I didn't look hard enough, I haven't seen a thread here where we can discuss European competition beyond Milan, so I've started one. Mod squad, if one's been started already, feel free to merge it and give me a rap on the knuckles.

Probably not the best way to get one started, but I didn't want to start out with a blank slate.

Totti: Ronaldo Is A Liar
Francesco Totti has rubbished claims from Cristiano Ronaldo that some Roma players begged him for mercy during the meeting between the sides last season.

Manchester United humiliatingly thrashed Roma 7-1 in last year’s Champions League quarter-final. The two teams met again last night with the Red Devils coming out on top with a 1-0 victory.

In the days leading up to yesterday’s match Ronaldo said: "When we were already winning 6-0 one of their players said 'don't do any more dribbles, you're already winning by six', almost begging."

Totti has denied that any such words were exchanged and has hinted that Ronaldo may have to face worst provocation when the teams meet in Rome on December 12.

“Regarding Ronaldo’s comments in the last few days, we didn’t say any of these words to him. I can promise you that the elbow he received from Vucinic yesterday was purely accidental but Ronaldo now has to come to Rome,” Totti said.

Er Pupone was proud of Roma’s performance last night and believes they deserved at least a point from the game.

“We did much better than we did last year. We controlled the game and we should have had a penalty. All in all, we did not deserve to lose,” Totti concluded.

That reminds of the world's most famous tennis match when we literally sent the Merda to the trash can. We were leading 4-0 when one pathetic Inter supporter ran to the field came across Billy and said something like "Bastare! Bastare!" or "Enough! Enough!" We didn't think that was enough of course as we added another 2 goals for an extra icing.

Back to the topic it's interesting to see what will happen to CR7 in Rome as MU (and their fans) didn't receive warm welcome last year

How the hell has Ronaldo proved himself a coward? He wasnt the one begging, h was the one Panucci was pleading to stop tormenting him

Considering some of the fouls that Ronaldo has taken without changing his style he is probably one of the bravest players around, every time someone tries to break his legs he gets up and immediately demands the ball again.

Anyway, when Utd go to the Olympico we should already have qualified, so Roma can have the honour of playing our reserves...

Oh how immense they were against Coventry lol.

For me the following link pretty much sums up Ronaldo:

exactly, if Mifsud can score twice past our reserves then maybe Roma will manage 5 between them.

LOL, so say the experts!

They follow up their expert critique on Ronaldo (based on 1 game ) by saying of the upcoming CL final "i think Liverpool will have too much for them up front!" What footy had they been watching over there? were they still thinking Keegan or Dalgleish were playing for the scousers?

Does anyone remember the part of the Man Utd v Roma match where Man Utd had a corner and afterwards both Perotta & Curci went down hurt? Perotta was rubbing his head and people were booing him and Curci. In the replays, Curci was clearly caught, but my point is the bit about Perotta.

ITV played one angle briefly where you saw Ronaldo do what looked like a punch. Now i'm not saying he did punch Perotta, but as the replay at this particular angle wasn't shown again and as Ronaldo was next to Perotta at the start of the corner, i don't think it's a long stretch to think he COULD have punched him.

I love it when he plays the game, but i hate him as a person. I'll openly admit i wasn't sad to see him with a cut eye!

Dru, Aguerro scored twice in the Uefa cup tonight!

That kid with Messi & Cesc are the only youngsters I would pay silly money for, they can change a game. Aguerro has made A.Madrid forget all about Torres.

Still the goal against Liverpool yesterday was a cracker, its a shame really because I wanted to see Samir Nasri.

Steza - lol, nah but they really dont like Ronaldo, there are a few videos on Youtube where they nail Ronaldo pretty hard. In one video they say that Linekar, Hansen & Shearer arent that good pundits and call Ronaldo a brat. I can see where they're coming from, Ronaldo is a player you either admire or despise and only United supporters admire him.

honestly didnt see that, i remember the corner and seeing 2 of them on the ground but never found out why, was it Vidic running into Curci?

The way i see it, if Ronaldo wasnt any good then rivals wouldnt care enough to despise him

Those old fools didnt really seem to know what they were on about, one was saying he's a great match winner but not a great player ?! what use is a great player who doesnt win you matches! Ronaldo doesnt even have to play well to help Utd, he is such a threat that just having him on the pitch means he drags 2-3 players around with him and leaves room for everyone else.

Yes, i think it was Vidic running into Curci that time. The other time Saha's legs caught Curci right on the knee, which would make anyone go down if they've ever experienced that pain.

Honestly, with the Ronaldo thing, it was such a brief glimpse that if you blinked you'd miss it. Just enough to make you wonder what he was doing with his arm. Being someone who doesn't have alot of love for Ronaldo, i naturally put that and Perotta on the floor together and came up with the idea that he punched him

Well to be honest you have to care if you hear United fans say 'The best player in the world blah blah blah' even after the semi's last year when Kaka took it away. Im not saying he doesnt have potential but I can name some games last year when opposition totally boxed him in and when they do this he cant take it, plus the diving lol.

Can you say to me Ronaldo shined last year when he faced the big clubs? I couldnt see him in any of the Chelsea matched, the Pool matches, the Arsenal matches or the Milan matches. You cant be classed as great and not show up when it matters, great players shine no matter what the circumstances. Did you see him in the FA Cup final? however he did rip teams apart but these were smaller clubs like Fulham, Reading etc.

He played well in a few of those games, and tore Roma to shreds in the quarter finals. The truth is that apart from Arsenal he was double or treble marked by all those sides, Milan had Gattuso plus which ever full back he was opposing on him as soon as he got the ball. Roma are a more attacking side and by not emplying those sort of tactics he could get to them 1 at a time.

Its easy to criticise Ronaldo on that but look at Kaka and he doesnt fair much better when faced with those tactics. in the CL final he barely touched the ball for 80 minutes as he had Mascherano doing to him what Gattuso did to Ronaldo. He got freedom against Utd but thats because Utd like Roma are attacking by nature and didnt have a proper defensive midfielder (Carrick is far more Pirlo than Gattuso) to protect what was largely the reserve defence. Also, Kaka got one goal in 8 games against the fellow top 4 sides Roma, Lazio and Inter last year and that came in a high scoring defeat.

When you hate someone with passion you'll always find a "proof" of how bad he is, or how he's not any good, or not good enough bla bla bla

I am not a ManU fan and i really like CR7 and i admire him as a football player.
So, this :

Exactly Stez, United is my second team and i think, they play just to win, C.Ronaldo has prooved his game a lot, don't forget that he was only 17 when United took him. He passes more, he cooperates better with the other playes and he is just 20 if i don't make a mistake.

Carrick stated in the Greek TV that United wins although they don't play weel so he said when their perfomances would improove they will be even more competitive. My opinion is that if United had taken Berbatov instead of Tevez they wouldn't have a scoring problem and they would be too strong .
