Name of an EPL player in mid 90's

I need help from any of you who followed english premier league in the mid /late 90's.

One of the EPL clubs during those years had a player that could play as both defender (center) and forward/striker. Pretty much like Mattias Sammer of Borussia Dortmund. I don't remember the name of the player, or the club that he played for. But I'm pretty sure he's english (but could be Scotish/Irish), and the club could be everton or chelsea.

Please help. I can't get this question out of my head and it's been lingering for days now.

Any thoughts?

Someone in another thread said that Chris Sutton (who played as a striker in Blackburn and Chelsea), often played well as a CD in Glasgow.
