Carlo Ancellotti Strengths & Weaknesses

Hello all at this great forum!

I am a Chelsea fan here in peace, in fact, with a lot of respect for you guys and your fantastic team!

I thought I would join, for you guys to give us some insight into Ancellotti as the rumours are strong that he will join Chelsea (I'm guessing will announce it this week)

You may know Guus's last game was with us today winning the FA Cup and Guus was loved by everyone and was a fantastic manager (shame it couldn't last longer) so the next guy will have some serious shoes to fill to carry that on!

So a few questions if you could?

In your opinion is Carlo the right man to start where Guus left? What are his strengths, does he tinker a lot with the team? Rotations? What are his weaknesses as manager? His relationships with players, good or bad?

I am sure you guys know of what has been said this week regarding articles about Mourinho in Carlo's book, putting him down, etc so not sure that is the most correct things to be saying knowing Chelsea fans hold massive respect still for Jose? Already it seems Carlo says things to cause reaction, etc
Does he say things in the press a lot against other teams/players/people?

Cheers guys!

Hi there,

1st: It's not official that Ancelotti is joining Chelsea and leaving Milan. I think the story is well blown out of context, as usual, as with any other news associated with Milan (e.g., Kaka` leaving for Madrid, etc. etc. etc.)

2nd: There is already a thread out there on Carlo:
http://milanmania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26027

You'll see what we think (mostly negatively) about him. But that's not because he is a lousy manager. I don't think it'll be difficult for people to tell you his strengths (barring a few who seems to want Carlo out of the position for every single game after Milan lost). His record I think speaks for his coaching abilities.

I'll be honest with you, I think your coach does a decent job that any top-tier coach should be able to do. In other words, I believe that Chelsea hasn't really hired a world-class coach except Mourinho in the past.

J

ps: I don't know if you watched it last night, but I thought Diversity (dance group) is fantastic in the British got Talent show. Fantastic.

Welcome Calvary, like mentioned by Jeff check out that thread.
I think he can do well with any team but starting with language and playing style he might need some patience with any EPL team. He is loyal and not a tinkerer, good with his players and nowhere like Mourinho for example with the media.

Welcome Calvary. Whilst I do want Carlo out of Milan, it's not because I consider him a poor coach by any means. I think he could do well at Chelsea, as he would in pretty much any place.

I don't know if he's the best man to take over from Guus (who in all honesty is better imo). He has very little experience of England (maybe not a big problem) and he's still learning English, which could hamper him getting his points across. His strengths imo are based on his tactical knowledge, as he's capable of adapting systems to teams and utilising players in various ways.

He doesn't tinker or rotate a great deal, when he finds a winning formula then he'll generally stick to it, I'd argue sometimes he waits too long before changing.

He's very good at developing relationships with players by the looks of it, and more importantly very good at keeping harmony in the dressing room.

Carlo also isn't the type to create problems with other coaches. His comments about Mourinho are more to do with Mourinho being an idiot than Carlo being a problem. Personally, I hold Carlo in higher esteem (both as a coach and a person) than Mourinho.

Honestly, if I was in your shoes, then I'd be pretty happy were Carlo to join Chelsea.

This pretty much sums it up, but I would like to add he doesn't give confidence to young players and therefore he lacks a long run vision. I think he could give chelsea their first CL cup.

It's weird how this topic is very similar to the one about Kaka' ...

Don't think it's true. Carlo's problem is that he gets to attached to certain players once he's figured out that they work. Back in the day Carlo didn't have a problem giving young players a chance, Pirlo, Gattuso were relativly young, and most of all Kaka who was played ahead of Rui Costa, a big star.

Perhaps his good relationship with the players that has been here for a long time is his undoing, cause he gives them all, much more room for error than the new ones.

But this "problem" is also the one of our club ... don't you think that if good/very good and promising players were brought each year (just one per year in a different position each time), he would have used them ?

When you have a good relationship with good players, when these players start to struggle, what would have helped Ancelotti would have been to bring very good players (don't tell Gourcuff), and not the likes of Grimi, Viudez and Cardaccio who are far from our best players.

The kaka`'s doubt piece clearly shows the coach has no say in who he wants to buy. I doubt a coach will allow his club to say. ON Kaka`:

"I'd never seen this guy not even on video tape. But at the press conference, it turned into a 360 degree inquisition on Kaká. That's when I had to improvise, saying things like he has two legs, he wears shoes with studs, his profession is footballer. I was really struggling. This is what press conferences are all about. You spout a lot of hot air and everybody nods along."

Meanwhile, we may have well given him too much credit for the christmas tree: looks like it's Pirlo who comes up the idea on his own, and things just fall into place.

Overall, I think he is a solid coach, not a great one. You will be happy when he is leading the Blues but u will also get piss when he sticks with certain players game in and game out despite that they are not performing.

I'm looking at our squad today, are we ready for the future?
No
Do we have exciting young players that can take over from our older players?
No, just Pato while we have so much old players.
Replacement for Billy?
Replacement for Maldini? Silva? perhaps haven't seen enough of him but will he be ready? He didn't play for a year and hasn't played a single European game. Can he lead us like Maldini from next year onwards? I think I wouldn't be honest to expect that
back up for injury prone Nesta?
Replacement for Sheva? Oliveira/Sheva/?

Track our transferlist over the years half of our bought players were over 32 or were players that weren't used in our squad, Esajas, Grimi, Collocini.
I think in the last 4 years we brought in about 6 goalies Stoari, Kalac, Abbiati (considering his several loanspells) that Greek goalie, etc

Young pirlo/Gatusso etc were not bought by Carlo they were allready here. gatusso allready played 46 official games. I think Pirlo was bought by Terim allthough I'm not sure.

You are right about Kaka but let's be honest about it there isn't a coach in the world that wouldn't give that young player a chance...
I don't mean Carlo is a bad coach and I want to thank him for what he has done.
Getting attached to players is good but that doesn't explain his adoration for old players Emerson, Favali,...
He might aswel get attached to young players imho
