If I am not mistaken, over 6000 people have already been killed and this number could rise so easily

I just found this thread. The earthquake hit the West Sumatera province and according to the local officials, caused 1.115 dead casualties (including hundreds people from two villages who were literally buried in a landslide).

As far as I know, other than edysupriadi who lives in Jambi, the neighboring province of West Sumatra, most of Indonesian MM members live in various city in the island of Java. The Java island itself is just as likely to be hit by earthquake as Sumatra island. On May 27, 2006, the earthquake hit Yogyakarta, when I was there, and claimed more than 6000 lives.

The government itself has put some effort into mitigating the effect, like installing the early warning system in many places or advising the people to build stronger houses, and the likes. I wish I could say that tragedies like these won't happen again, but as the geologists observed, our country is situated on "the ring of fire" so earthquake or even tsunami is likely to happen anytime. But people die everyday, don't they? So the best thing to do IMO, is hoping for the best while preparing for the worst.

Anyway, thank you very much for all your caring, guys. God bless us all.
